  1. Yes, she can survive. I have one that I found in the street over a year ago that was in this bad of a condition, or maybe even worse. She weighed 25 lbs. at the time, and was full grown. Not a puppy, but young. She had never been in heat.. She quickly responded to good food, good nutrition, and good care. She is part yellow lab, or maybe not even part. Today she weighs 65 lbs. and she is possibly the most intelligent dog in my entire pack of 18. (I sent a few bucks to help care for this poor David dog.)
  2. I can't find any way to reply to this advertisement. Searching on Amazon for "Samsun 5X camera doesn't give me usable information. Can the seller give me more details...model number, etc. Thanks.
  3. It seems that a long time ago I read (somewhere) about an art supply and frame shop in David. Does anyone know the name and where it is located? (If so, no google maps please--I can't tell head nor tails about those things.) Thank you!
  4. I hope you have better luck with ACODECO than I did. In my case they were worthless--and cost me a LOT of time with phone calls and personal visits.
  5. A recommendation for Rodny Direct: I live in Volcan. Recently was one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard of. Even in my bedroom, doors and windows closed, LOUD (but pleasant) white noise from my air purification machine, I could hear all sorts of racket which appeared to be coming from several blocks away. (One could hardly call it "music.") Around 11:00 I called Rodny, who called the police for me. He called me back, saying there was a "car contest" to find whose car had the loudest speakers...and the "contest" had been given a permit by the mayor until 2:00 am. The mayor lives in Bugaga, of course, not Volcan. (Until our new Tierras Altas district goes into effect in 2018, we are still in the Bugaba district.) Rodny reported that the police said they had received a LOT of calls about the racket, and shortly after 11:00, it did stop. (Maybe the mayor got a lot of calls, too!) To explain about Rodny: He has a service, $80 per year, and he accepts calls 24 hours a day. Fully bi-lingual, of course. I can speak Spanish about dogs and clinics all day long without any problem, but I'm sure I'd not be very successful in calling the police, the fire department, for an ambulance, etc. in an emergency, so Rodny takes care of that for his clients. It's well worth the money in my opinion. A couple of months ago I called Rodny about very LOUD partying just about a block from my house. Even at a distance of more than a block away, my windows were vibrating from the bass so much that I was concerned my windows would shatter! Rodny and I kept in touch and he had to call the police more than once. The police came and shut down the noise just after 10:00. I didn't know those particular neighbors or I would have politely asked them myself. A few times neighbors that I do know were blasting some loud "music" and they very kindly turned it down when I politely asked them to. Question for another subject: I often wonder what is the Panamanians' love of LOUD racket...the LOUDER the better, it seems. Anyway, in my opinion a subscription to Rodny's service is well worth the money.
  6. Every animal counts, but this was the fewest number of animals we sterilized at a single clinic in a LONG time. It was a disappointing day in that regard. See http://spaypanama-chiriqui.org/98th.html We have now sterilized 3,628 dogs and cats. We had six last-minute cancelations and 15 no-shows. Sometimes there are valid reasons for last-minute cancelations, but when people who have confirmed their appointments do not show up without bothering to notify us, it is rude and demonstrates disrespect for the doctor and our volunteers. Those inconsiderate people can bring their animals to subsequent clinics--but they will not be given appointments. They will be given a letter - A, B, C, etc., instead of a number and they will have to wait until we have time available for them. We do keep a list of people who fail to honor their confirmed appointments. ---------------- I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to each of our dedicated volunteers. Without them and our wonderful Dr. Andres Tello, these clinics would not be possible. When I remember the scores of starving, mange-ridden and dying dogs roaming the streets in Volcan before we began the clinics in March of 2006, the exponential increase that would have happened is too depressing to consider. Our next clinic will be on October 23, 2016. Please call for an appointment right away because the clinics fill up rapidly. And remember, our November clinic on the 20th will be the final one for 2016. For people who just want to see pictures taken during the clinic without reading the web page, here is the link: https://www.flickr.com/photos/panama_expat/sets/72157672887694950
  7. All dogs are special, but some are EXTRA special. Maggie is among them. My Petey was another EXTRA-special dog. I still miss my Petey. He died on March 21, 2015, causes unknown. He and Maggie are probably special friends now, on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge. John and Susan, I certainly identify with your grief! For those of us who are truly lovers of dogs, having our special friend die is a death of a family member.
  8. Thanks for the great report, Bud. I signed up with The Box Shop in David on Thursday. Dario was very professional. The office is conveniently located with ample parking available. I look forward to good service AND to saving a lot of money. I've had no problems with eShop, but I hardly ever have occasion to got to Boquete and by the time I pay the eShop rates PLUS paying Fletes to deliver my package(s) to Volcan, it costs a pretty penny. (Fletes has really increased their costs.), I do have occasion to go to David every week or two, so picking up my packages won't be a problem. I order quite a few things from Amazon but seldom am I in any big hurry to receive a package. Therefore, stopping by The Box Shop will work out just fine for me.
  9. Thank you, Bud! Very clear explanation. I will check them out. $2.50/lb is outstanding--even if the charge is for "size-adjusted" weight. As you said, all forwarders charge this, and when their per-pound rate is a lot more than $2.50, it can add up even more. Unfortunately, when we order something from the US, we have no control over the size of the box it will come in.
  10. Has anyone seen the Arm & Hammer brand of baking soda recently? I'd like to stock up. The other brand sold her is crap. Thanks for any info!
  11. August 28, 2016 - Cats, cats, cats! Dr. Tello sterilized 22 dogs and 23 cats for a total of 45 animals. http://spaypanama-chiriqui.org/97th.html He also performed other procedures, including removing an eye from a dog and removing a venereal tumor. We have now sterilized 3,605 dogs and cats. Be sure to see the Flickr photo album within the web page. In the Volcan area, we desperately need more people to get involved with: --fostering animals in need --helping to find homes for animals in need --filing denuncias against people who abuse animals Please contact us and help if you can. ---------------------------------------- Sterilizations and clinics are not the only things we do. People frequently call us about a sick or injured animal. We can't deal with broken bones or internal injuries, but we help dogs and cats in other ways whenever we can. You may recall that not long ago, I reported about a cat that fell from a high place onto a piece of rebar which went through her entire body. Fortunately, it did not damage any internal organs. Rosemary Rios, a volunteer, happened to be at my house when the people called; she and Jose, my employee, used my car to take anesthesia and the necessary medications and supplies, stitched up the wound, and saved the cat's life. Now, just a few days ago, someone else called. Their dog had somehow torn a big wound on her tummy near her back leg. Jose and I took a shaver, anesthesia, antibiotics, pain medication and other necessary supplies and stitched the wound. Too bad we don't have a picture of after we shaved around the wound (before stitching) because it better shows how huge the wound was. It required 17 stitches. The dog will be fine. Our next clinic will be on September 18th. Please call for an appointment right away. The clinics fill up fast. My deep gratitude to Dr. Andres Tello and to everyone who volunteers, donates food and/or funds, and brings their animals to be sterilized. Here is a wonderful video, Dog Rescuers' Creed The only thing they fail to mention is the JOY these rescued dogs bring to the hearts of US. -- Dottie
  12. I agree with the posts of Chris and MarieElaine. "They are selling a product and what profits are made and what they do with those profits is their business."
  13. Geeze -- a couple of months ago Saca Saca charged me $140. I thought that cost was outrageous. I'll try someone else next time.
  14. The actions of the US government are absolutely inexcusable. There are "accusations" but no proof offered, but hundreds of Panamanians are now without jobs. Why doesn't the US government take similar action against the anonymous corporations in Nevada?...all potential money launderers? One of these days the US will lose its ability to bully other countries!
  15. Haven't looked in a long time, but Super Baru in David has/had wheat berries.
  16. I did that, Bud, but nothing happened. Must have been a temporary glitch because I've successfully quoted before.
  17. For some reason I'm unable to quote from OldMikeNY's post. He said, " One thing about The Box Shop: It is located at the end of a long parking lot. You cannot see it from the street. The parking lot is across from a bakery in David. The operator said to use Google maps, because I used Waze and it got me to the right place, but I didn't know it was inside this parking lot. " Would you please give complete directions? I can tell head or tails with Google maps and I don't use Waze. $2.50 per lb is great!
  18. I still think the wordy "explanation" of the anonymous person is suspect. Marion forwarded it to me and said: Dottie, I forward you this . It puzzles me. I drove behind this truck. The truck stopped - opened the door - the dog got thrown out.,the man drove away. That's it! It also puzzles me if they brought "12 rescued cats from the street in Panama City" when there are plenty of cats right here that need homes. Secondly, cats on the street are feral. How did they catch them? There are too many unanswered questions about this issue.
  19. My post wasn't directed toward you, Roger. The term is used quite often.
  20. Sounds strange all right. Why could Marion "catch" the dog and the guy couldn't? Why did he curse Marion and act abusive toward her? She said she SAW the guy kicking the dog out of his car. Something doesn't jell here.
