  1. Turning Plastic to Oil, U.K. Startup Sees Money in Saving Oceans Anna Hirtenstein writes for Bloomberg about this great idea — At a garbage dump about 80 miles west of London, Adrian Griffiths is testing an invention he’s confident will save the world’s oceans from choking in plastic waste. And earn him millions. His machine, about the size of a tennis court, churns all sorts of petroleum-based products — cling wrap, polyester clothing, carpets, electronics — back into oil. It takes less than a second and the resulting fuel, called Plaxx, can be used to make plastic again or power ship engines. “We want to change the history of plastic in the world,” said Griffiths, the chief executive officer of Recycling Technologies in Swindon, a town in southwest England where 2.4 tons of plastic waste can get transformed in this way daily as part of a pilot project." I wonder if the oil companies will manage to quash this great idea. Big Business has been able to kill many great ideas over the years, all that would save money and energy, and even lives. 2. Can anyone recommend a GOOD English-speaking electrician? Either in Boquete or David. I will pay for transportation, of course. If so, contact information please. I am unable to find one in Volcan. Thank you.

  5. April 23, 2017 - 42 animals were spayed/neutered by Dr. Andres Tello, our wonderful veterinarian. http://spaypanama-chiriqui.org/104th.html This brings our total of dogs and cats sterilized to 3,885. Although we have sterilized more than 42 animals in one day, this was our longest day ever. We didn't close the doors until 7:30 pm. We had a LOT of BIG female dogs, two abortions (all more time consuming), plus three huge tumors and a knee surgery. One tumor took an hour, and the knee surgery was also quite time consuming. Dr. Tello also performed eye surgery on a dog. One cat had to be euthanized. We are very fortunate to have such a skilled and compassionate veterinarian as Dr. Andres Tello! He is the best veterinarian I have ever known—anywhere. Thinking back to when we first began the clinics. I was always concerned that we wouldn't have enough animals. I walked the streets of Volcan, knocking on doors, giving literature to people and trying to sign up their animals for sterilization. I'd also post 60 notices all around town before each clinic. The initial work paid off, because now with just word of mouth, every clinic is full long before clinic date. As of today, April 30, we already have 26 appointments on the list for May 21st, so call right away for an appointment. We now offer teeth cleaning of dogs at our clinics. I bought a complete set of dental instruments, and Alex Rios does a great job. Alex has already cleaned the teeth of 11 of my dogs. We offer this for dogs that have already been sterilized or will be on clinic day. Cost is $25. The cost will be extra if one or more teeth need to be extracted. Be sure to make an appointment. As always, my heartfelt thanks to Dr. Andres Tello, to our wonderful volunteers, to those who contribute, whether it is funds or otherwise, and to all who bring their animals to be sterilized. TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Big hugs! Dottie
  6. Would you please give me more information. I've found several Samsung mini s3's and I'm only finding 4-inch screens. I'd like to find some reviews. And is it unlocked? One or two SIM slots? Thanks.
  7. If someone has upgraded and has a good unlocked smart phone (with decent camera) at a decent price, I'd be interested. Preferably dual sim. I want to use it mainly for photos; for calls, I prefer to avoid all that "swiping" and use my "non-smart" phone.
  8. Moderator comment: This topic is not directly and specifically related to life in Chiriqui or Panama -- in one way, but then in another way it is related. Panama is becoming more aware of the environmental damage being done by the use of plastics and improper waste management, and is beginning to address recyclables (as posted here on CL in other topics). This topic is being allowed to remain because we are part of the problem and part of the solution. 300 BILLION pieces of plastic are found floating in the once pristine Arctic Ocean Report finds that hundreds of tonnes of plastic are cluttering the Arctic Ocean The waste is dumped in the Atlantic Ocean off Europe and the United States It is then swept north by ocean currents to a 'polar graveyard' The waste releases toxins into the ocean and is swallowed by wildlife The link includes pictures and video. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-4426104/Arctic-seas-called-dead-end-plastic-floating-U-S-Europe.html Sadly, the recycling center in Volcan is no longer accepting plastic of any kind.
  9. Wow, thanks for the post and the link, Bud. Macromedia/Flash do NOT make it easy to find their settings page. It will take some study to learn what settings to use to "better" protect privacy, albeit far from perfect. I use Private Internet Access (PIA). For a long time, I could not log in to my Schwab account while connected with PIA. After PIA denying that they were the problem, they've apparently fixed this issue. Now it's Chase. I found the "fix" for either/both is to disconnect PIA and connect with the free Hotspot Shield. Recently Flash player did an automatic update. After that, when I watched a youtube video, a small duplicate of the video would appear in the lower right of my screen. Very annoying. (That did not occur in Firefox.) When I decided Flash was the issue, I disabled it in my Chrome browser settings. Problem solved. Now, after reading the link you provided, I feel even better after disabling Flash.
  10. I use a VPN (Private Internet Access) and usually use a US location. This morning I sent a question to PIA and then received the following. Does anyone heard about this "recent US legislation?" What a bunch of crap! More intrusion into private lives. "Currently we are experiencing higher than average helpdesk tickets due to recent US legislation changes that let your internet service provider spy on you. Your ticket will be dealt with however you may face a slightly longer than normal response time."lightly longer t normal response time.
  11. Re the water testing: Manuel will give you the containers and specific written instructions for the procedures. Very professional. Before I discovered Dixon Laboratorio, I asked Aquatek about doing a water analysis. They said just to bring some water in an empty soda bottle, etc. What a joke! I'm glad I didn't waste time and money to get some bogus "analysis."
  12. That's it, Jim, Usually I can't tell heads nor tails about google maps, and I don't know street names (if indeed there is a sign). But the reference point of Super 99 makes it clear.
  13. I suggest you go ask Manuel Dixon about this. It's very important to accurately diagnose ehrlichia and treat it, just as a false positive can subject a dog to unnecessary drugs that can also be harmful.
  14. In David, going toward Concepcion, turn left at the signal light that would take you to the old Super 99, Romero, Nissan dealer, etc. Go two blocks (the first block is a long one), then turn left. The lab is then in that first block on the right. Right now the sign just says "laboratorio" and it is not in great condition. As I mentioned, they are enlarging, so don't let the looks of the place from the outside give you the wrong impression. When you're in David, I suggest going by and talking with Manuel. If you like, you can print out the list of dog tests I attached previously and discuss them with him. Best to call and make sure he will be there. Sometimes he needs to go to a particular farm/dairy to do testing. I know you will like Manuel very much and will be pleased with his expertise! You can tell him I sent you if you wish. He has been a friend for quite some time.
