  1. This year there were a lot more fireworks very close to our house.  With all the windows and curtains and bedrooms doors closed the dog still suffered.  Rapid heart beat and trembling and nothing we did could calm her.  Eventually she went under the bed which is very close to the floor.  She stayed there until 2:30 am.  We are all glad it's over.  Fireworks aren't fun for us anymore !

  2. This is the reason my husband and I are members of Rodny Direct.

One important element is response along with watchfulness.   Our homes need to be secured with intruder alarms with sensors well away from the home entry itself.  On the issue of watchfulness, we need to be watching neighbors homes as well....especially ones where the residents have been gone for long periods.  One home in our community was ransacked after intruders disconnected electric wires on the street, cut into the house from the backside, and took their time inside the house tearing apart every inch .   The victims were Rodny Direct clients, however were not even in the country at the time.  Possibly watchful neighbors might have made a difference however the robbery could have occurred at 3 a.m.!!

I like the idea of a motion sensor at your home perimeter and the beeper alarm inside your neighbor's house.  If you are not home for long periods...the neighbor might have heard your alarm, and have had opportunity to call Rodny......and catch the guys red handed. I have a wireless unit where the sensors work on batteries ( AAs) and the alarm beeper is plugged into the battery pack inside my house.   It picks up intruders as far away as in my neighbors yard and communicates through the cement walls of my house .  $50 at amazon.com.....that, and Rodny Direct are well worth it.

Hope to see you next Tuesday at the BCP Market when Rodny announces his insurance plan offer and signs up and renews RD members.

  3. Look this up on Amazon.com

Mars Double Wide Stainless Steel Coat King Pet Stripper with Wooden Handle

I bought one and brush my dog at least once a week with it.   Much less dog hair in the house and the dog is much more comfortable with less undercoat.. This variety is top of the line, made in Germany.  .  It is not irritating to the dog and does an amazingly good job. The one I bought has 18 blades.

  4. Our rescue dog was (and is sometimes a hole digger).   For the most part she no longer digs up the yard.  That said I found her in a 2 1/2 foot deep hole she dug across the street in the vacant yard just last week.  She hunts lizards.....which might lead her to a snake she did not anticipate.   This is probably our biggest issue.  When we first got her, she did not play.  Toss a bal?....nothing.  Tug of war?...nada   A good friend taught us how to teach her to play by getting her all excited then introducing the toy....wow, she plays!     Now we have walks twice a day and play time.   She's getting us in shape I'll have to say....which is a good thing I guess.

  5. There was a program on Ceasar Milan the dog whisperer where the dog was chewing everything.   His take was the dog needed more activity.  He got the folks walking the dog twice a day for about 45 min.  The dog seems to settle right down.  Then he took the dog to the front yard and surrounded her with all the things she loved to chew....viola, no chewing.  He fully anticipated that he might have to correct her attention off the objects she chews.   This was a young dog....and he said the younger dogs and certain breeds are more apt to be chewers.

  7. Yes....I always enjoy my Rodny days.  Lots of new folks in town and lots of old timers as well signing up.  I always get to see somebody I've been missing for years!  I love as well pumping Rodny's expert tech support person for information on numerous topics...he's a bright bulb and very talented indeed.  Might be a good spot for CL to doc and introduce the web site.  The more folks learn of this wonderful healthy web site the better the site (as well as the community) will be.  PLUS we can give each other hugs again !

Love to you both.  Folks like you make Boquete a very special place indeed.  Love at first sight all the way around eh?

  8. I always enjoy my day with Rodny when he signs up the new folks. (I'm a helper.)  I don't do much but direct flow, help with odd jobs etc,but it's always a nice day for me.   I met some nice folks again today and enjoyed my time.  Best of all I finally got to meet Bud and Marcelyn, ChiriquiLife founders ...super duper great folks!.   Rodny's service seems to always be improving. There's always new ideas shared with enthusiasm as they interact with the clients as well each other ( Rodny and his tech guy).  I enjoy that.  Thanks Rodny for what you do!

The new cards got misprinted and are being re-done.  They will be done shortly and you will receive notice where the card pickup spots will be.  Sorry for the delay.

  9. FYI:  My husband and I are surfers ( OK old surfers).  Last year there was an international surf contest for individuals with handicaps.  It was broadcast LIVE and I was daily sending Rodny emails about what I saw.  Paraplegic surfers...with the assistance of  helper-pushers  and watchers were a particular division.  To watch that happen ( and for me a nurse having done much of my nursing caring for paralyzed patients) ..was a JOY to see...and as well to share with Rodny.   I sent him their official tee shirt.  On the front is a surfer with one leg surfing.  So anyway...that's the story on the tee shirt I sent to Rodny.  Anything is possible if you dream !

  10. #21 And when you have guests visiting that want to hike up to Baru and ask you to come along you smile and say...."Have fun, be careful...here's some pepper spray a boat horn and some water...we'll pick you up when you're back....and charge your cell phone"

Today we head to pick up our friends that left at midnight last night from the Boquete side and will hike all the way to Cerro Punta.  (sigh).......ahhhhh to be young again.   We won't be settled til we see them again.

  11. And violent crimes is a bit different here ( than in the USA ) to a degree.   We (elderly foreign settlers) are more the target I feel.  Keith Woolford recommended seeing the DVD  City of God.  It's about youth gangs in the ghettos around Rio in Brazil.  It's an eye opener.  We saw it last week.  These youths are groomed when they are very young.  Many of them (if not all) come from poor families and have not had a basic education.  The gang gives them a sense of power, control and a sense of being successful at something....belonging.  They have an enormous amount of loyalty to their gang, coupled with lethal and dangerous bravado.   Life of victims has little meaning to them .  This is a very serious problem that needs a multi pronged approach to "solution".  Ending this juvenile gang mentality is a struggle there in Brazil but they are meeting with some success. Now is the time for Panama to take a serious hard look at what is happening to this country. Youth gangs with guns is a serious problem.  The solution is not easy.  I'm talking about solution not merely custody and detainment. The focus has to be on a solution to growing gang mentality.  Our sense of it is the country is asleep at the wheel.  It can only get worse.   Then we leave...I guess.  We'll be too old to deal with it and will be all the more the target.
