  1. The rating system is too much like Facebook and many of us dislike Facebook. Somebody posts "I bought new socks today." and 20 people "like" the post. WTF ???? (Which means "why the face?")
  2. Why is Jim always on Keith's case????? It's getting old.
  3. Wow, this is a great deal. I don't know how they can stay in business at this price. Fingers crossed that they're still around next time I need to take that trip.
  4. I rent my spare bedroom(s) thru AirBnB and have had wonderful experiences meeting some great people -- some of whom are now full-time Boquete residents. The basic way you would screen potential hosts is to read the reviews. Every guest is asked to write a review of the host and the accommodations. This weeds out the bad ones fast. Of course, if you are the first guest to book, you don't have much to go on.
  5. The really scary part is how long you sit in jail before you get a trial. The right to a speedy trial that we North Americans take for granted isn't a right at all in Panama. I don't think Ozzie has had a trial yet.
  6. I was told last year that the location had become too expensive for a recycling (i.e. junk) yard. The best use for that property is commercial. The lady owner has been looking for a long time for an affordable location. If you collect your recyclables, a once a month trip to the cemetery isn't. all that bad.
  7. Yes, I moved them around to different outlets in the house. The power light would go on for a second and then off again and wouldn't come up again. I took my one good box and put it into my bedroom where 99% of my television watching happens.
  8. I tried disconnecting the power from all 3 of my cable boxes. Could only get one of the 3 to power up again. Very strange. Maybe there was a power surge that blew out two of them. Will take the two non-responsive boxes in to CableOnda and have them replaced. I got off on the wrong track because my friends in David had told me that CableOnda had told them there were nation-wide TV outages.
  9. I haven't had any Cableonda TV in 24 hours. Friends in David say they haven't had it for 36 or more hours. They called the company and were told that TV was out all through Panama. Is that true? Will they credit our bill for the outage??? Ja, ja.
  10. I always get a kick out of the procedure at Casa de Batterias -- which actually is one of the better run companies in Panama. If you go in and buy a $.99 item, they produce a very large 4-part NCR paper receipt. I'm sure the receipt costs them at least $.50 to produce.
  11. I need a larger set so no longer need this nice table with 4 chairs. The table is about 26" SQUARE with a hole in the center for an umbrella. 4 chairs. Everything is is good share with no rust. $80 takes it. Email pjbarrett@aol.com
  12. On July 4th the speaker on Tuesday at the BCP will be Tom McCormick who gives a very interesting and funny talk on Panamanian culture. At least the backwoods or interior kind of culture. Here's the write-up: Tuesday, July 4 ā€“ Tom McCormack will tell us all about Panamanian legends, wives tales, myths, and superstitions. This is a very entertaining talk and will teach us all something about this place we call home.
  13. All of you folks who are moaning and groaning about Panamanian immigration and the need to get your visa and the changes in the law, etc, etc should attend this talk and get some real answers instead of a lot of bochinche.
  14. The culture is the "Panamanian hang-up call." Tell your workers to call you and hang up. You call them back.
  15. I've gone mid afternoon for the last two days to Fusion (formerly "Bistro Boquete) to make reservations for my gang to sit on the balcony Saturday afternoon to watch the cablegada. Both days they've been locked up tight. They used to open for lunch at 12. Are they closed for good or just no longer opening for lunch. Does anybody know?
  16. Are they now following the law and giving the pensionado discount when requested?
  17. The basic rules for parking at the BCP is you cannot park with your wheel(s) on the sidewalk and you cannot park with your wheel(s) in the driving lane. As Bonnie says, there have been lots of warnings about this.
  18. It's as complete as Hospice can do in 75 minutes (mas o menos). You can write to Betty Landis, one of the presenters at boquetehealth@gmail.com
  19. I ate there on Sunday with Bud and Marcelyn and wanted to share some of my observations. It's obvious the owners have put a lot of money into this place and the rent is most certainly high in this new building (Dona Mirta). I thought the menu for dinner was very limited -- some lasagna dishes and one eggplant parmesano. I ordered the vegatarian lasagna and am almost positive I ended up with the 4cheese lasagna as it was very cheesy and sin vegetales. It was good though, but too rich for my digestive system (read "heartburn"). I also thought the dishes looked very lonely on the large plate. No salad, no pickle, no carrot stick, nothing but the main course in the middle of the plate. The service was good but we were the only 3 diners in the place so good service should have been fairly easy for them. The place is almost a duplicate of Otto's on main street but no wine or beer. I don't think it will be able to compete with Otto's in the long run unless they learn to do some advertising to gringos and expand the menu.
  20. We have scheduled the Hospice presentation "Being Prepared" (for dying) in late August or early September. This program always fills up and, since Panama law is always changing and morphing, everyone should attend even if they've attended in the past.
  21. Tom McCormick is not a doctor but I would bet he's fitted more prosthetic breasts, hands, legs, and feet than any doc in Chiriqui. tlmccormack@hotmail.com
  22. There's a guy named Phillip Hagen who has recently opened a body shop. However, I think he specializes in older cars with a need for flashy paint. classiclandcruiserexports@gmail.com
  23. I believe Leslie has mixed up her two right hands. If you're going to David from Boquete, San Miguel and Ivan are both on the LEFT. San Miguel is directly across the road from Merca Max which is on the RIGHT.
