  1. This is the seventh in a series of audio podcasts by Chiriqui.Life. The subject of this podcast is Dan Porter of Twin Wolf Technology Group. He describes himself as a country boy who found his passions to be (a) computers, and (b) casino gaming and poker. Dan first came to Panama City in 2009 under a contract to bring American-style casino gaming (especially poker) to Panama. He arrived with his wife of 35 years for the multi-year contract. Upon completion of that contract, he found that he liked Panama so much that he decided to stay, but in the Chiriqui highlands. However, his wife did not share the same enthusiasm for Panama, leading to what is described as the world's most amicable divorce on record. Dan continues his two passions, and supports computer clients in various countries using remote technology. He then met and married his second wife, Clara, who is Colombiana. That marriage began a long series of issues with immigration status in Panama, with the result that Dan and Clara are relocating to Colombia. Dan goes into some detail about his experiences with immigration in both Panama and Colombia, as well as Panamanian culture.

You may contact Dan about his computer support services at dan@twinwolf.net.

Interesting, Bud. How does this differ from simply cutting out a news article and pasting it into CL? That seemed to have worked with the article I posted about the U.S./Panama soccer game (unless you formatted it later).

Both approaches will work. It is our experience (based on feedback) that users like to know what content is by the person doing the posting, and what content is being referred to or quoted. Kind of a different spin on full transparency.

I did not go in after the fact to edit your posting about the soccer game. I did add the word 'soccer' in the title for more clarity.

Thanks, Bud and Jim. I hadn't made myself clear. What I was trying to do was post the actual text of the news story. I just cut and pasted. I felt sure that there would be something special you had to do here, but I was wrong.

    Bonnie,

Now I think we are moving forward. It appears you are really wanting to know how to format a section of text as a "quotation", not make it into a hotlink.

At the top of the text entry box is a line of "tools" to help format text. That line of tools is called the "toolbar". By "format", I refer to making text "bold", or "center justified" [left justified is the default], or to change font or font size, insert ordered and bullet lists, etc., etc.

One of those tools is the "hotlink" tool that I thought from your original inquiry was what you were interested in. The hotlink tool is the icon that looks like a link in a chain and is normally the fourth tool from the left. To the immediate right of the hotlink tool is the "quoted text" tool. The icon for the quoted text is, surprisingly, a large quote character.

When you want to use the quoted text formatting, there are two ways you can go at it. One is to type in (or paste in?) the text (which can contain images or documents, etc.), then select that content with your mouse, and then finally clicking on the quote tool. The other approach is to put the cursor where you want to type in some quoted text, click on the quote tool, and then type in the content inside of the quoted text box.

I use the quote tool all the time when inputting news articles. I find that things work better if I type in (or paste in) the content first, then select it, then apply the quoted text tool.

Note: I find it difficult (at times impossible) to apply some of the tool bar formatting tools when using a tablet or mobile device. The touch screen characteristics are sometimes working at odds with each other. Never had a problem with any of the toolbar tools when using a regular computer with a mouse.

A little hint here: if you do not know what an icon in the toolbar does, simply hover your mouse over it. A tool tip will display telling you the purpose of that tool.

  4. This is the sixth in a series of audio podcasts by Chiriqui.Life. The subject of this podcast is Lloyd Cripe. He, along with his wife of almost 55 years Sandra, is a long term resident in the Palmira area of the Boquete District. Lloyd is better known as Boquete's Mr. Weatherman, which is a non-commercial community service that he provides. We learn that Lloyd is a retired Vietnam-era veteran, having served in the US Army as a helicopter pilot. We also learn that he is a doctor in clinical psychology. Lloyd has widely varying interests, including photography, astronomy, meteorology, bird photography, etc., all while operating a coffee finca. Lloyd obviously is not letting the dust collect under his shoes.

To listen to Lloyd's podcast, click below on the white, right-pointing triangle (arrow) on top of an orange circular background. If you see two options below, we recommend using the "Listen in browser" option as opposed to the "Play on SoundCloud" option.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but this doesn't work for me. I click on the chain icon and then copy a URL into one or both categories, but nothing produces an active link. Help! I'm trying to post the following: https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/soccer/2017/07/08/us-held-to-1-1-tie-by-panama-in-gold-cup-opener/103530938/

There are two fields needed to make a referenced link into a "hotlink". BOTH are needed.

The dialog that opens when you click on the chain link looking icon has those two fields. The first (topmost) is the HTML code that actually gets executed. That means, as stated in Twin Wolf's posting here needs to have the fully qualified URL information. What that means is to include the "http://....." preface (or it might be "https://.....", etc.).

The second field is the text that is to be displayed to the viewer. More often than not, people just put in the same fully qualified URL information that is in the first field. However, sometimes it is more productive or less confusing to put something that is more descriptive. For example, you may want to put "Click Here" for the text to be displayed, rather than lengthy and obtuse or confusing URLs.

    For example:

http://www.chiriqui.life <===<< in the first field

Chiriqui.Life <===<< in the second field

....would insert a hotlink that says "Chiriqui.Life" to the user, but would execute the URL "http://www.chiriqui.life".

The same approach is used to put in email addresses as hotlinks. The exception is that the preface in the first field needs to be exactly "mailto:" (including the colon character), which is then followed by the email address.

    For example:

mailto:support@chiriqui.life <====<< in the first field

support@chiriqui.life <====<< in the second field

...will open up the users email client and start an email to <support@chiriqui.life>.

  6. The Chiriqui.Life website currently has two (2) different categories of audio podcasts.

One of those categories is called Chiriqui.Life Podcasts, which focus on SMEs (subject matter experts) or the "movers and shakers" of the Chiriqui highlands area. Chiriqui.Life Podcasts are produced by the owners/administrators of Chiriqui.Life, namely Marcelyn Jandreau and Bud Huber. Chiriqui.Life Podcasts typically will provide information about one of two different themes:

    • One theme will feature subject matter experts (SMEs) and "movers and shakers" in various fields of endeavor, or owners/operators of entities that may be of interest to the members of this website.
    • The other theme will be community service type subject matter, such as an audio recording of a presentation at the Tuesday Talks series that are hosted by the BCP, etc.

The other category of audio podcasts is called Chiriqui.Life Stories, which focus on locals and expatriates who are living an extraordinary life and contributing to our special community. The audio podcasts in the Chiriqui.Life Stories are produced by Michael Schwartz.

This topic provides an index of both categories of audio podcasts that have been published here on CL.

A spay-neuter Clinic is being held today, for some reason not posted on the calendar

We are a bit puzzled also, Keith.

CL management is of the opinion that the Animales organization would be more successful if they were to post their activities (not just the sterilization clinics) on the CL calendar, with over 1,300 sets of eyeballs seeing the events. There is a secondary benefit for the entire community in that other organizations planning activities can schedule their events so as not to conflict with the Animales activities.

With more prompting, maybe they will come on-board and post their activities here on CL for all to be better informed.

  9. Dottie, I think I now see why you are having a problem. You were not referring to content being deleted from CL, but rather ion the BPWTR website. Sorry about my confusion.

Go to the link that Bonnie referenced. Then scroll to the bottom left where you will see two digits indicating pages 1 and 2 of that topic. The posting you seek is on page 2, and is the 8th of 8 postings, and written by Mark Hurt on August 10, 2014.

  10. 9 minutes ago, Dottie Atwater said:

Granted I didn't spend a lot of time but I couldn't find the message you copied. I wouldn't be surprised it it was deleted.

Dottie, it is not clear to me what you are not finding. Things only rarely are deleted from CL, and I mean only extremely rarely. As I look at Bonnie's posts (plural) I have no difficulty finding everything that she refers to.

Can you be more specific as to what you are not finding?
