  1. TwoSailors did inquire whether CL was having difficulty. We appreciate the manner in which they are trying to resolve a CL response time issue.

If any other CL members are experiencing slow response times, and especially where other visited websites appear to be fast, please let us know. You can either post a reply here or send an email to support@chiriqui.life. We would also need to know who your servicing ISP is.

For any having this kind of problem, we are sorry that you are being impacted, and will do what we can to resolve the issue pronto.

I googled Hospital Cooperativa and not much info. It is not listed on CL medical resources. Does anyone have first hand experience with this place?

The health care resource listing here on CL is maintained by Mary Lynah. She may be contacted by email at MHLynah@gmail.com.  I will accept and post relevant information from others, but would prefer to have Mary's sage advice.

    Panama – Chile trade expanding

Under the current trade agreement in force since 2008, currently 74% of tariff lines enjoy complete relief, which will grow to 97% in 2022.

“… Panama is the 29th largest trading partner of Chile and occupies the 25th position as an export destination. In 2014, Chilean exports to Panama were worth $179 million; and those from Panama to Chile were $80 million. “

Catalina Ocampo, commercial director of representation at Pro Chile, told Martesfinanciero.com that “… in the period 1990-2014, the cumulative investment of Chilean companies in the Panamanian market was worth about $813 million, mainly concentrated in the sector services. This represents 98.2% of the investment, focusing on finance, transportation, commerce, computer services and construction.”

  6. This is the ninth in a series of audio podcasts by Michael Schwartz -- Chiriqui Life Stories. This new podcast is a conversation with Susan Clare. Susan was born and raised in New York. She talks about the challenges of her young years that got her involved with both alcohol and drugs. As a young adult she decided that she wanted more for her life and so she changed her outlook and actions. She has advanced degrees, but changed career paths on several occasions as she was finding what worked best for her. She eventually came to Central America, spent one year in Costa Rica, and then settled in Boquete about five years ago. Susan now teaches Pilates at the Haven Spa.

To listen to Susan's podcast, click below on the white, right-pointing triangle (arrow) on top of an orange circular background. If you see two options below, we recommend using the "Listen in browser" option as opposed to the "Play on SoundCloud" option.

This podcast is 43m28s in duration.

  7. Admin_01 Note: With the prior approval of News Lady, the topic of Otto that had been posted (along with its replies) in the News Boquete forum has been merged into this topic. I also merged another topic that was related to the heavy rains here in Panama.

The rationale is that there was confusion about where to post, given that there were two simultaneous topics on the same subject. This was the first time that a topic in the News Boquete forum has been moved out of that forum. Hopefully everyone can understand these unusual circumstances.

I have also slightly modified the title for this topic to make it a bit more general.

These folks fled to Peru years ago. In fact I think General Bert may be dead. And, as you know, The Bajareque Times has long ceased to exist. And Chiriqui Libre is not a newspaper, it's a yahoo group with almost no moderation started by a Volcan resident named Reggie.

    You've been hoodwinked.

This has been an interesting topic. The subject was brought to our attention verbally by a non-member of CL (and thus no CL posting privileges). That person requested that this information be published. We normally do not post content for the public, but felt this might be more of a community service rather than an individual interest type post, and so we consented. We did no vetting and took the web link at face value.

Now it turns out that out that CL's members have filled in a lot of background information. Thank you for doing that.

Given this additional information, we did do a bit of research this morning. It does appear that Major General Stubblebine is still alive (no evidence of his passing could be found; note that Wikipedia among other websites has an article on him). There also appears to be a bit of conspiracy theory involvement on his part after his retirement, but I won't elaborate further on that.

Insofar as Dr.  Rima E. Laibow is concerned, there are a lot of websites discussing her "achievements", thoughts, and claims. Some of that information involves ebola, nano-silver treatments, cancer treatments, CIA mind "raping" experiments, etc. I choose not to pursue any of that any further.

The bottom line here is that the Chiriquí Times website, although still active, is not a new and probably not a viable media resource. We could find no information cutoff dates for the content that is displayed on that website.

Our recommendation is to let this topic fade into history. We do not see a reason to remove this content, but could "lock" this topic if our members think it appropriate. Your feedback and suggestions are solicited.

  9. Dottie,

I would have come to your aid earlier, but have to use [unreliable, slow and expensive] satellite Internet access at this time.

The issue was that you had two typos in the URL link (left the terminating 'a' off of the word 'spaypanama' and duplicated the 'http' prefix'). Computers can be very unforgiving (and unapologetic).

I have corrected ALL of your posts here.

    Have a great day.

  11. This is the eighth in a series of audio podcasts by Michael Schwartz -- Chiriqui Life Stories. The subject of this podcast is David van Harn. David became interested in Boquete because of recommendations on the Internet, plus discovering the Boquete Jazz and Blues Festival, an annual event held in Boquete early each year. He decided to give the Chiriqui highlands a try, and immediately fell in love with Boquete. David has had an interesting career, and some setbacks, but his attitude and outlook is very positive and upbeat.

I can't find any way to reply to this advertisement. Searching on Amazon for "Samsun 5X camera doesn't give me usable information. Can the seller give me more details...model number, etc. Thanks.

Dottie, per member request (actually 'insistence') immediately after CL went online, all classified ads are restricted from allowing replies. Admins and moderators on CL have special permission to post without restriction.

  13. Based on the identical subject matter, two separate topics were merged together just now. The topic that was merged with this one had been posted in the Water Cooler forum.

Not wanting to confuse any of our readers, but experience tells me that merging is the right thing to do. And with apologies for not catching the dual topics earlier.

  14. How This Pet Care Resource Listing Came Into Existence

There is a bit of sad history behind this pet/vet resource listing. Early in 2016 there was a tragic loss of a beloved pet dog by TwoSailors, who are CL members. That loss was the result of a snake bite. Marcelyn and I were so moved by the owner's struggle to save their dog, and the impact of that loss, that we decided to compile a listing of emergency pet care resources. The Boquete community quickly made it clear that such a resource listing would be used and appreciated, but even more important and valuable if it were to be generalized into a listing of all resources related to pets rather than just emergency care. And so that is what was done. Roughly two months worth of work, about 200 man-hours expended; it was a labor of love by many.

For John and Susan (TwoSailors), your tragic loss of Maggie has resulted in a lasting tribute to her in the form of the pet care resource listing here on CL. In honor of Maggie, we have nicknamed this pet care resource listing as "Maggie's List".

We want to encourage everyone to use their cell phone, iPad, DSLR or point-and-shoot camera to shoot and edit a tiny movie of their own and submit it to the festival. There are 6 exciting categories:

    • Drama

    • Documentary
    • Adventure/Travel
    • Commercial/Promotional

For an entry fee of 10 dollars, not only will everyone get a chance to create one of the top 20 videos that will be screened at the Gala Screening and Awards Ceremony (Saturday, January 28th 2017) and win fabulous prizes, they will also get a three hour workshop taught by Patrick Allen Reynolds and other local industry professionals. We will teach you everything you need to know about how to make a video from pre-production to post-production with tools anyone can use. Everyone has a little Hitchcock, Fellini, Attenborough in them. This is the chance to let them out!  Register at our table at the Tuesday Market or at Casa de Montaña during business hours.

Only BVF management can start a new topic in this dedicated forum, but all members will be able to reply to any posted topic.

To contact the BVF organizers, send a PM (private message) here on Chiriqui.Life to @Patrick Allen Reynolds .

If you clicked on a hotlink in an email distributed via News Boquete, and expected to be taken to the podcast of the interview with Gabrielle and Patrick Reynolds, be advised that there was a technical flaw in that email hotlink. 17. This is the seventh in a series of audio podcasts by Michael Schwartz -- Chiriqui Life Stories. The subject of this podcast is Gabrielle and Patrick Reynolds. They are recent "transplants" to Boquete, having worked in the theater, film, and entertainment industries in Hollywood. This podcast focuses on their early years and how that prepared them to create their own fun and happiness. Gabrielle and Patrick created a very successful improv group in Boquete shortly after their arrival in Boquete. They also are the creators of the "Boquete Video Festival 2017" that includes workshops, judged entries, and culminating with a formal gala screening event in January 2017.
