If someone can provide more specific information about hearing aid services (anywhere in Panama), then please either post here or send a PM to @Admin_01 so that this information can be added to this health care resource listing. By "more specific information" I am referring to name of the business, contact information, website (if any), hours of operation, location, etc.

  2. This is the second time that this subject of disabling the reputation reporting system functionality has come up in CL's life. What we write here is NOT meant as a final decision, but rather continuing the discussion to be sure that we all truly understand all of the issues and goals.

One of the underlying goals of CL is to provide a non-confrontational social medium addressing life in the Chiriqui Province. The reputation system is basically a tool to facilitate "self moderation" by the members. Several "tools" exist to assist in achieving this goal, and reputations are just one such tool.

We have seen several instances where reputations have resulted in members "moderating" their words. In some cases, some of those who received negative reputation have left CL and moved on to other venues that allow them unfettered negativity. We wish them well in those other websites that permit them fulfill their need to post caustic words.

One of the side benefits of reputations was beginning to be surfaced in Bonnie's posting that starts out with:

On 5/5/2017 at 8:40 AM, Bonnie said:

I can see some value in the reputation arrows.

    ...

I am curious how many of our users are aware of or actually view what is called the "leaderboard". Please visit http://www.chiriqui.life/leaderboard/. From the current reputation levels, you hopefully can see that Roger B and Bonnie, and etc., are valuable and respected members of CL. The leaderboard is a dynamic display that changes all the time. The leaderboard allows users to "drill down" and form their own opinion as to who provides valuable content. Note that the leaderboard does not allow one to "drill up" from the least favorite direction. There is value in knowing whom others view as providing valuable information.

Are we as the owners/administrators able to shut down the reputation system? Yes. We currently are not strongly motivated to do that because there is value in this self-moderation tool. However, we always do listen to our members and try to provide a resource that is used, supported, and favored. At the same time we definitely do understand that receiving a negative reputation oftentimes is not a pleasant experience. (I have received negatives in my "Bud" persona; management accounts cannot receive reputations.)

Next, addressing an aspect highlighted by JohnF13, referring to the monitoring of use (abuse) of the reputation system. Monitoring is done on an ongoing basis. We cannot and do not assess use of the reputation system based on their "validity". Everyone has their own mindset about what a reputation means to them, and their own value reference scale. Monitoring means that we watch how many reputations are given by any member (only registered members can give reputations; members cannot give themselves reputation) during a time frame. Current thresholds are three or more reputations within a short period of time. Once we see three or more reputations in a short period of time, we then look at the full picture and make an admittedly subjective decision regarding abuse or not. If there is an issue that needs to be pursued further, then we do that in private with the involved member.

What the owners/administrators are asking now is for those with an interest in this topic to look at the leaderboard, and provide their additional feedback with that knowledge and experience of the leaderboard behind them, coupled with a rethinking of the concept of self-moderation tools. We listen to our members, but have a different viewing portal from regular members because we have the advantage of all of the [both supportive and opposing] feedback from all members, coupled with the experience of the results of a fairly good self-moderating tool.

We look forward to hearing additional feedback and comments here in this thread (for all to see).

    Thanks.

The reputations thing is a waste of time.  Anyone that feels triggered by any comment you make can give you a negative reputation.  There is no policing of it and quite frankly it should be done away with.

Your feedback and recommendation are noted. Thank you.

Going a bit further, please note that you are asserting something that is not correct, referring to "There is no policing or it...". All activity on CL is routinely monitored. Sometimes the monitoring is delayed, but eventually completed, typically within 24 hours. We suggest that you revisit Rule #7 at http://www.chiriqui.life/topic/6-terms-rules/.

    Lawyer fingers Martinelli sons

Martinelli sons center of bribery probe

THE FORMER  LAWYER  of the two sons of ex- president  Ricardo Martinelli  is  a key link in their  money laundering investigation and is cooperating with prosecutors.

In different statements, Evelyn Vargas Reynaga who was the trusted lawyer of  Alberto and Luis Enrique Martinelli Linares- has given the Public Ministry details about the role she played in companies created for the Martinelli sons.

She told Special Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office investigating the Odebrecht case that her former clients tried to persuade her not to return to Panama after the Public Ministry issued an order for her arrest in Mexico reports La Prensa.

Luis Enrique Martinelli Linares called Mexico,  and said: “Do not go back To Panama (…) if you want, you are welcome in Miami. ” Two days later, the two brothers called again to reiterate the offer.

The statement was made in the first investigation of Vargas Reynaga before the Public Ministry, on February 22.

Vargas Reynaga told the sons that she had received a letter from the Embassy Of the United States telling her they had removed her visa. “Why do I need this?” she complained.

They said: “You are not the only one. Our mother [Marta Linares de Martinelli] also lost hers and we’re not going to be able to see our mom.” and  they confessed that their visas had been  “taken away.”

The lawyer also revealed that on February 16 she received an email from Luis Enrique Martinelli Linares, informing her that they had hired an Interpol affairs specialist law firm and that she was included in the package.

They attached a power of attorney for her to sign and told her to send the documents by courier to an Address in Miami.

“They used me, they did with me what they wanted,” said Vargas Reynaga.

The brothers acquired large assets, concealed suspicious transactions and, according to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, would have been an important vehicle to hide money from bribes By Odebrecht to win millions of dollars of contracts.

Vargas Reynaga started working at Ricamar (the Martinelli business owning the Supper 99 chain,  in June 2009, a month before Ricardo Martinelli took over the presidency.

In the midst of the transition between Martin Torrijos and Martinelli,  she received a call from a school friend  Giselle Brea, who left Ricamar to go to work for the State as executive secretary of The Gaming  Control Board. “She told me that if I was interested in working at Ricamar, it was something different from what I was doing … “.

“Evelyn, these are not issues of court, they are more administrative matters,” she was  told.

She gained the confidence of the Martinelli Linares, to such a point, that Ricardo Alberto sent her to Madrid, to sign the contract for the sale of a luxury apartment that they acquired in that city.

Her friend Giselle Brea is also in the sights of an anti-corruption prosecution, as part of the investigation related to the contract award process for the

Buko Millionaire bingo, a business that would have been linked to Ricardo Martinelli Linares.

Vargas returning to Panama under escort

    Homecoming
On Wednesday, February 22, the lawyer returned to Panama on a commercial flight from Mexico after an Interpol alert.

On that day, Vargas Reynaga gave a long statement to Tania Sterling, who is coordinating the special prosecution

“I am willing to collaborate with you,” she said almost at the end of the diligence and then gave details of his work in Importadora Ricamar.

Vargas Reynaga knows a lot. And  is a key piece in the puzzle of OdebrechtSuiza, an investigation that involves many former high-profile figures right to the top of  the Martinelli  administration.power pyramid

FOLLOWING Panama’s first successful heart transplant last year there are three male patients on a waiting list say health authorities.

Alejandro Vernaza, director of the National Transplant Laboratory of the Social Security Fund, said that since 2015, potential recipients have been undergoing tests to determine their suitability for a transplant.

The aim of the tests is to avoid rejection Vernaza explained that when a heart becomes available, specialists have four and a half hours to determine which of the people on the list are most compatible.

After determining who is the most compatible patient, another test is performed on the recipient to avoid rejection. This last analysis is called crosstesting, he said.

T he first heart transplant in Panama was performed on March 11, 2016, on a 51yearold woman. It was performed at Punta Pacífica Hospital by a team of doctors from that facility and Social Security.

The surgical team was composed of four surgeons, including Miguel Guerra and Manuel

Sinaproc warns avoid beaches until May 7

    waves-2-620x264.jpeg

A WRNING  oof waves of up to 3 meters  and a strong undertow along Panama’s Pacific Coast has been issued  by  the Civil Protection System (SINAPROC).

The  agency  says  the alert will be maintained from April 29 through May 7  and the population,  is warned to pay  special attention to rising tides  and the presence of high and frequent waves at any time and to obey  warning notices.

Sinaproc warns people to stay away from beach areas because of possible sudden tide surges  and to comply with the recommendations of the security departments.

The National Emergency Operations Center (COE),  will monitor vulnerable areas  like  Puerto Caimito (West Panama), Playa Leona (West Panama), El Salado de Aguadulce (Coclé), Puerto Armuelles (Chiriquí), Boca La Caja (Panama City), Gonzalo Vásquez Island (Panama).

  10. Teaser here. We are working on a podcast that discusses farm raised fish, among other subjects. The podcast should go public within a couple of days.

My take is that farm raised fish will only continue to grow in importance, given that demand continues to go up (increasing population) and supply declines (oceans being fished out and the regulatory environment becoming more aggressive).

Stay tuned here on CL as it was a good interview that Mike did.

    Great thread here.

Just for fun...how about if CL posted a new espanol sentence every morning?

apenas para la diversion y la educacion una nueva frase en espanol por las mananas.

A good idea. Now to figure out how to implement using our software. Give us a bit of time to research some options.

  12. I refer you to Rule #17 (see http://www.chiriqui.life/topic/6-terms-rules/):

    Quote

Once a member has posted something on Chiriqui Life, they have a fifteen (15) minute grace period in which to review and then take one of two actions: (a) to do nothing, or (b) to edit the content; erasing the entire posting is not permitted. Once that fifteen minute grace period has expired, then the posting is locked. Administrators and moderators can edit any content on the website at any time. A request by a member to edit one of their locked postings would have to be justified. A request by a user to edit a posting by someone else will be disregarded.

These kinds of matters are routinely handled by the CL Staff. Simply send a PM (private message) to @Admin_01 (that is a hotlink, click on it and then click on the message icon), and identify which posting and what is to be changed.

  13. Hotel Finca Lérida Coffee Plantation and Finca Lérida

Note: Google Maps has two entries for what is commonly referred to as "Fiinca Lérida". One is for the restaurant and one for the lodging. Either one of these will normally be sufficient for location data, however, the vast majority of people think of Finca Lérida as meaning the "Hotel Finca Lérida Coffee Plantation" because that is where the restaurant is located.

If in doubt, we recommend that you use the Hotel Finca Lérida Coffee Plantation entry.

Did something get deleted from this thread?  I don't see anything here from TwoSailors except, "Good one!!! Uncle Doug!"  Are the Russians hacking CL?

    Judy,

Not sure what the problem is here. Did you not see that this topic, as it currently exists, consists of two pages of replies? It appears you are only looking at the second of two pages. Trying to figure out how serious you were about this posting; or were you just joking?

No, things do not get deleted from CL except in extraordinary circumstances, which is not the case here.

Further, are you not aware that if there is a section of quoted text in a posting, that you can go to that quoted text by clicking on the curved, right-pointing arrow that is to the far right of the citation for that quoted extract? Try it; it works great.

To date there have been 31 attempts to hack into CL, all of which have been unsuccessful. Most of the attempts have come from Russia, but recently several from China, and a few from Europe and Africa. Monitoring of and preventing such activity is a routine management requirement for any responsible website administrator.

thanks for getting the interactive feature working, Bud.

    <snip...>

    De nada.

It is a cool "map". I would have used the word "chart" to describe what was being displayed, but that website specifically labels it a "map". Oh well, so much for my naval training.

It turns out that the only way to post the interactive version (given my current level of knowledge) is to use HTML code. That is something that only admins are permitted to do here on CL because it is very easy to destroy a website by using those powerful tools. Damage to a website can be either unintentional (e.g., simply making a typo), or intentional (the so-called bad dudes/dudettes). Most people do not think about those issues, but website owners have to protect their websites. So far in CL's life we have had about 30 attempts to hack CL, mostly from Russia, but one in particular from an African country. That is more than once a month. Such is life nowadays.

  16. Thank you Siempre. You saved me some time.

If you look at the map on their website, it is not a static display as shown here. Interesting. I just wonder where they get the underlying information to make such a chart.

My interpretation is that the Middle East, Europe and SE Asia are more active with migration as compared to the Americas. Others may see things differently, however.
