  3. In 2018 resolve to be a BVB supporter! Is this email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser. Buenos Vecinos de Boquete Newsletter February 2018 The Boquete Has Heart Event is a Great Success Buenos Vecinos and Amigos de Animales were the big winners at the Casino Night fund-raising event sponsored by Boquete Has Heart. BVB raised enough money to support ten of its existing client families for another year, and AADAB raised enough funds to help spay and neuter hundreds more animals in the Boquete area. Thanks go to the attendees who filled the Animales Event Center and to our generous donors who gave us over fifty fabulous silent and live auction items. If you were not there, you missed a chance to win exciting tours and getaways to destinations all over the world including Spain and Bonaire, fun adventure packages including a sports fishing day tour, hotel and restaurant certificates, catered parties, offers for health and beauty services, valuable memberships and original artwork and crafts. Manna Pack Rice Supplement, the “Golden Nugget” in BVB’s Monthly Basket Click on the link to this short video to see why Manna Pack is a “super food”. Donated to BVB by Phillip McGuigan through his Amigos de Boquete Foundation, this nutritional dehydrated rice and vegetable product is supplying much-needed nutrition to children, elderly and handicapped clients. VIDEO HERE Ana's family enjoys the sleeping mats, made from plastic bags, by "The Bag Ladies". Best Wishes to Karen Hill Karen Hill, long-time and valuable member of Buenos Vecinos leaves us this week to begin her next adventure in Bend, Oregon. We will miss her warm smile and her remarkable dedication to helping build the BVB organization and make it run more effectively. Karen has also played a pivotal part in the Boquete Health and Hospice organization where she has helped develop many important programs. She and Craig will leave a void in the Boquete community, as well. Farewell and thank you, Amiga! Family of the Month Update 2013 2017 Here’s an update on Aida’s family who were featured in one of BVB’s first newsletters in 2013. Five years ago, Aida, then 65 years old, was caring for her two grandchildren Danila, then 11, and Davis, then 9 years old, after their mother died. Aida also took on the responsibility for three great grandchildren Yorlanis 4, Cyndil 5, and Santiago who was 3 years old. Aida made a home for them in her cinder block house located in a mountain village above Potrerillos. The outdoor kitchen featured a wood-burning cooking area and, with all those mouths to feed, the kitchen was in continuous operation! When Buenos Vecinos started making food deliveries, Aida was especially grateful, since she was not yet eligible to receive the $100 government stipend for Panamanian residents who are 70 years or older. Aida now receives that stipend and it helps, but five growing children eat a lot of food! Aida’s health is deteriorating and her energy is flagging, but she is determined that all of her charges are attending school and achieving good grades. During the summer, the two oldest boys work at a trapiche (sugar mill) making sugar blocks from sugar cane juice. With only this limited income and her pension, the amenities and the challenges of daily living have not changed very much for Aida’s family. However, Buenos Vecinos has watched this family grow stronger and more energetic year by year. Good nutrition and Aida’s unwavering love and care for this family are the key ingredients that make it all work. How to help? If you would like to help our clients and the efforts of Buenos Vecinos de Boquete, we would appreciate your donation of any size. It is important for you to know that we are a small all-volunteer force with no administrative or overhead costs. Every dollar of your donation goes to the purchase or storage of food for our clients. Buenos Vecinos de Boquete's wholesale purchase power enables us to furnish our clients more food than they could purchase on their own in the store with the same amount of money. When you make that important decision to help feed the less fortunate in our community, you have truly become a “good neighbor”. When you donate $360 a year or $30 a month (about the cost of a daily latte), you will become a Coconut Foundation member as an acknowledgment of your concern and generosity. Donate Online: http://www.buenosvecinosdeboquete.com/how-you-can-help We use PayPal for easy and secure transactions. If you prefer to donate by cash or local check, please contact Louise Orr panamaleo@gmail.com for arrangements. Thank you! 13. "The Clubhouse" in the BCP Hex Room is before and during our movies. Food and drinks - including popcorn - are available for purchase. ------------------------------ We don't charge admission, but we do ask for donations to support BCP and the Film Club program. February 11 - Amargosa (USA - 2000) February 18 - Honeydripper (USA - 2008) February 23 - No Movie (Jazz & Blues Festival at the feria) ---------------------------------- Sunday, February 4 @ 1:00pm - Everything is Illuminated (USA - 2005 - PG13) Ratings: IMDB - 7.5, Roger Ebert - 3.5/4 From Roger Ebert.com: Liev Schreiber's "Everything is Illuminated" begins in goofiness and ends in silence and memory. How it gets from one to the other is the subject of the film, a journey undertaken by three men and a dog into the secrets of the past. The movie is narrated by Alex (Eugene Hutz), a Ukranian whose family specializes in "tours of dead Jews." Alex and his grandfather (also named Alex) drive American Jews in search of their roots to the places where many of their ancestors died. The trip through a bewildering but beautiful Ukrainian countryside involves a Soviet-era car that may not exactly have air bags. The grandfather is the driver, although he claims to be blind and insists on going everywhere with his "seeing eye bitch," whose name is Sammy Davis Junior Junior. Alex's English seems learned from a thesaurus that was one word off. He tortures words to force them into sentences from which they try to escape, and keeps a journal with chapters like Overture to the Commencement of a Very Rigid Search. The movie's hero is Jonathan (Elijah Wood), a solemn, goggle-eyed American known as "The Collector" because he accumulates bits and pieces of his life and stores them in Ziploc bags, carefully labeled. He has come to the Ukraine to find the woman who saved his grandfather's life. To this woman is due much gratitude, because Jonathan's grandmother passed along the belief that the Ukraine treated Jews so badly that if the Nazis invaded, it might be an improvement. 14. It's no surprise that when Joseph Pilates moved to the US in the late 1920's and opened his studio in NYC, his method was immediately embraced by the Professional Dance Community... The Pilates Exercise System provides a great work-out simultaneously working on many levels. Through awareness and concentration practitioners move slowly, steadily and smoothly, emphasizing precision of form and total control. Years ahead of its time, the Pilates system not only strengthens the body/mind connection, but enhances & stimulates the coordination of the central nervous system. Joseph Pilates designed his exercise method to strengthen his students' intelligence, turning- on a greater number of cells/receptors of the brain and central nervous system- not only during, but following the execution of his exercises. Basic Pilates highlights the fundamental movements of Classical Pilates; specifically strengthening the lower back and abdominal muscles, instructing correct posture through body-awareness & correct alignment, and strengthening and adding flexibility to the skeletal.muscles and the joints. It also highlights the necessity of developing and maintaining optimal balance. As we age, doesn't it make sense to do whatever we can to enjoy our lives and live most optimally? Isn't our health and bodily- ease our highest priority? Come to the Haven - Do Pilates! Get back to basics and take greater responsibility for your Health and Well-being. You'll be Grateful You Did! Ongoing Group Classic Pilates Classes are on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays & Fridays, from 8:30- 9:45 a,m, All props provided including small balls, stretchy bands, belts, light hand weights, blocks, magic circles and mats. Do bring your own yoga mat if you have one- to be guaranteed two for when we go down to the floor. All student levels work together; each person listening to and honoring his or her body to determine their optimal range of motion. Quality of movement, not quantity or number of repetitions, is the focus. Classes can be paid for individually at $9 each for residents, $10 each for tourists, or one of two packages may be purchased- $30 for 4 classes to be taken in a month, or unlimited classes in a month for $72. Interested in checking out Pilates before entering a group class, or just not a group class person? Private sessions are also available by appointment. For more information and to schedule an appointment at a suitable time for your schedule, email Susan Clare, Certified Plates instructor, at the address below. *To experience the benefits of Pilates and to feel as though one is progressing, it is recommended each student attends class on a regular basis, at least 2-X weekly. 19. Boquete February 1, 2018. To the Boquete Community: Boquete Recycle, Reduce, Reuse (Boquete RRR), is a committee created by citizens devoted to Boquete´s eco conservancy. We are convinced that a family who recycles makes the difference, and the only way to achieve this goal is by educating and creating awareness among students, business people and the whole community. Our group wishes to have your support to tackle this chore together. Please help us attain our programme of a clean and healthy environmentally friendly district for all “Boqueteños” and for those lucky ones who also happen to live on this paradise. This includes visitors who should be aware of their responsibility as well. We would like to begin by reducing all non-biodegradable materials such as: aluminum, iron, plastic, paper (white and colored) cardboard, and others; at home, schools, shops and businesses. At the same time, we want to teach everyone the reason why it is important to recycle these materials. We are working to accomplish this educational process at all levels. Also, we are organizing cleaning and collecting days for recyclable materials. This activity could be part of the social hours students have to comply at their own schools. Boquete RRR, wants the town of Boquete to be a role model in terms of cleanliness and beauty to the point that it will make us all proud. To all business people, we would like to include you in our data base of businesses committed with the environment. Thus, we are currently working to enroll everyone as part of our programme. We invite you all to become active collaborators of Boquete RRR and participate of the events the Committee members duly organize. Please support Boquete RRR pursue a better environment for a better quality of life. Don´t forget to like our page on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/123111781674817/about/ We thank you in advance for your collaboration and wish you a Happy 2018. Yours truly, Francisco Serracin President Comité Boquete Recicla, Reduce, Reutiliza
  20. As a part of ARF's restructure of our foster program, we have come to an agreement with Javier and Magaly Dog Camp to relinquish control of five dogs who have been cared for at Dog Camp for a long time. These are dogs that Javier and Magaly rescued and to whom they are extremely bonded. This agreement will not only be beneficial to those five dogs, but will free up ARF's foster and financial resources to allow us to assist more animals in the area. We want to give a HUGE shout out to Javier and Magaly for all the love and attention, rescue and adoption assistance they have given to our ARF dogs. We are truly thankful Judi Rinker
