  5. ENROLLMENT OPEN SEASON FOR THE ALTO AL CRIMEN/HOSPITAL COOPERATIVO MEDICAL DISCOUNT PLAN. Again on January 9 and January 16, Alto al Crimen will be at the Tuesday Market to make available for renewals and new enrollments the Hospital Cooperativo discount medical. These will be the last two days for this enrollment period. Hospital Cooperativo is the ONLY non-profit hospital in Panama. It offers a wide range of basic medical services and has nineteen affiliated doctors plus a number of psychologists and nutritionists. GOOD NEWS! Beginning in January 2018, a new doctor will be affiliated with the hospital. She is the daughter of Doctor Luis Wong, the hospital administrator. Dra. Wong is a radiologist and will be managing the X-ray and ultrasound imaging facilities. She speaks ENGLISH! Dra. Wong has been practicing medicine in Spain. The medical plan has no age limits, no waiting period and no pre-existing condition restrictions. Discounts apply to doctor consultations, hospital services, hospital room charges, operating room services, prescription drugs at the pharmacy and emergency room services. Discounts range from 25% to 30% for most services and 50% for emergency room services. And the discounts are off already very low prices because the hospital is non-profit. Because the Alto al Crimen emergency bilingual hotline will be closing down, fees for the plan will no longer include donations to AAC. The charge for the plan will be $120 per person. A separate contract and information sheet will be required for each person. Also, a clear, legible copy of each person's ID must be provided. Copies of Cedulas are preferred, but if you have a Pensionado Card or Passport, copies of them are also acceptable. Payment is to be in cash only. All proceeds will go the the hospital. Alto al Crimen will have a table at the BCP Tuesday market on January 9 and January 16 from about 9 AM until Noon. Please do not delay. If too many people wait until the last minute to enroll, there may not be enough time for everyone. The hospital's contract is in Spanish, but we will have English translation copies available for you to read. We'll also have a list of doctors and their specialties and a schedule of the discounts. You can also find information about the plan on Boquete.ning.com in the forum section. It was posted again in the past few days and should be in the first few forum pages. Below is a copy of the information sheet we need to have for each enrollee. If you copy it and print the number of copies you will need, you can complete the forms and bring them with you. That will make your enrollment work faster and better. Be sure to complete the form in clearly legible block letters. Your address does not need to contain detailed information because it is not used for dispatching ambulances or other emergency services. We need this form for both new enrollments and for renewals. 8. 2017 was a rewarding year for us as we found permanent homes for 35 animals. What an amazing success! Each of these animals came to us with a story of homelessness, illness, abuse, or neglect and with the community’s support we have been able to rewrite their tales with happy endings. Our future looks bright and we are excited to bring you new and exciting fundraising events this year. Look for upcoming announcements detailing our 1k Fun Run, Wine Tasting Gala and more. From all the volunteers at ARF, Happy New Year! December Finances December income totaled $3366.21 and expenses were $1648.85. ARF Coupon Book Fundraiser Coupon books are still for sale. Contact ARF or any ARF volunteer and buy yours for $25. There are many food and drink discounts for local restaurants, free hotel nights, discounts on computer repairs, classes and tours and much, much more! Coupons are valid through 2018. Thank you to all the businesses who participated in our inaugural coupon book and to those who have purchased them. We already have vendors asking about participating next year so we look forward to this fundraiser growing in value! Featured Animal Meet Bobby. He is about two years old and a handsome little guy. He is a very sweet and social dog and loves to be close to his human. Bobby was rescued, along with his mom and 5 siblings from the Palo Alto area from a man who was threatening to poison all of them if they were not removed from the area. Bobby gets on well with cats and other dogs. We would like nothing more than to say goodbye to Bobby knowing he’s found a forever home. Come and meet Bobby and his friends at the Tuesday market The Issue of Euthanasia When we sent out our survey a couple of months ago, we received some feedback which we were not expecting. There were some who felt that ARF spends too much money on medical care for animals and others who argued that providing medical care for severely ill or injured animals is cruel. In the US and many other countries, people make the decision to euthanize their pets for health, behavioral and monetary reasons regardless of the viability of the animal. This, combined with the millions of shelter animals who are euthanized each year, has created a social and ethical issue with people on both sides wanting the best for the welfare of the animals but holding vastly different views about how to make that happen. The difference for animals here in Panama is that it is very difficult to have an animal euthanized unless it is suffering from an incurable or extremely painful illness or injury or if the animal has a disease which could cause a public health issue. Veterinarians are hesitant to euthanize animals that have a chance of recovery and who could go on to live a full life. While ARF has had to have animals euthanized, it has been rare. It is a decision that we do not make lightly and is made together with the attending veterinarian. While many of the first pictures of the animals we post are alarming, the majority of these animals are suffering from easily manageable conditions such as malnutrition, parasites, and skin funguses. Some suffer from more serious, but treatable illnesses such as tick fever. We see a few injuries from vehicles and some from abuse, but the vast majority of these issues are treatable and euthanasia would not be an option for these animals in Panama. Most of the animals that pass through our care make unbelievable transformations in just a few weeks with the appropriate food, parasitic medicines and fungal baths. We appreciate the comments we received and are glad to have the opportunity to be able to add some clarity. As always, if you have questions or concerns about the animals in our care, we encourage you to contact us at arf.boquete@gmail.com ARF is the only community based, all-volunteer, non-profit animal rescue organization in the Boquete Panama area. Our Mission is to provide for the well-being of all companion animals, rescued, abused, and injured. Providing medical treatment as needed and finding lifelong loving homes through adoptions and to promote the animal/human bond through community outreach. ARF is dedicated to ensuring animal abuse, neglect and suffering is reduced and or eradicated through raising the public awareness through action, education and advocacy.

"The Clubhouse" in the BCP Hex Room is now open, and food and drinks - including popcorn - are available for purchase. ------------------------------ We don't charge admission, but we do ask for donations to support BCP and the Film Club program. January 7 - A Ghost Story (USA - 2017) January 14 - Rumble: The [American] Indians Who Rocked the World (USA - 2017) January 21 - Everything is Illuminated (USA - 2005) January 28 - Amargosa (2000) ---------------------------------- Sunday, January 7 @ 1:00pm - A Ghost Story (USA - 2017) 1 hour, 32 minutes - Rated "R" Starring Academy Award winner Casey Afleck, Rooney Mara Ratings: 6.9 - IMDB, 90% - Rotten Tomatoes, 4/4 - Roger Ebert We begin 2018 with "A Ghost story," which was one of 2017's top-rated independent films. It is yet another insightful and though-provoking movie like many others we have screened for the Sunday Matinee Movies at BCP. David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter also gave the film a positive review, writing: "A poetic meditation on time, memory and spiritual connection that is utterly true to its title. From RogerEbert com: I rarely see a movie so original that I want to tell people to just see it without reading any reviews beforehand, including my own. David Lowery’s “A Ghost Story” is one of those movies. So I’m urging you in the first paragraph of this review to just see it and save this review for later. If you want more information, read on. There are no spoiler warnings after this because as far as I’m concerned, everything I could say about this film would constitute a spoiler. This tale of a man who dies young and lingers around the property where he and his wife once lived is bound to be one of the most divisive films of the year. I didn’t know anything about it going in, except that its main character was a person who dies and spends the rest of the movie walking around mute, wearing a white sheet with eyeholes cut out of it. The film is a ghost story, in the sense that there’s a ghost in it, but it’s also many other things: a love story, a science fiction-inflected story about time travel and time loops, and a story about loneliness and denial, and the ephemeral nature of the flesh, and the anxiousness that comes from contemplating the end of consciousness (provided there’s no life after death—and what if there isn’t?). Yours in Health, Michael Cooper Private Sessions Available mic1951co@gmail.com FULL TESTIMONIALS Merl Will-Wallace, October 2017 Ten weeks ago I took the Five Tibetan Rites at The Haven from Michael Cooper. I have done yoga and tai chi before and was wondering how this could be so much better. The beginning was anything but auspicious. For years I have had paroxysmal vertigo, which makes me sick to my stomach any time that I lay down or spin around. Rite one and two had me on the ropes. With Michael's direction I just pushed on. Within a week the vertigo was gone. I started thinking I could not do five reps. I did, but thought I could never increase two reps in a week. I did, and I did two more each week until I hit 21. I have not missed a day in ten weeks and don't plan on missing one ever. Almost immediately I found I had a lot more energy that was sustainable throughout the day. I have also lost 10 pounds with no change in diet, except I don't tolerate coffee as well as I used to (way to much energy now). Most importantly my stubborn high blood pressure is now normal. Overall I feel stronger, more flexible and, well, yes younger. Thank you Michael for introducing me to this miracle in my life. Laura, November 2017 Something my husband and I can do and encourage each other while doing. Increased strength in weird ways, like holding the hairdryer/curling iron. Notice increased stamina/strength when doing occasional reps of my other exercises. My clothes are and continue to get looser, not only pants but sleeves on short-sleeved blouses...must go shopping! When on the mat for #4, I look at my calves and wonder 'Whose are these anyway?' They look so different. Took monthly photos, as suggested...haven't looked at them yet. Like the convenience of doing it at home with comfy clothes, bare feet and a yoga mat. Much more likely for me to keep it up if it's at home, doesn't take much time and I get noticeable results relatively quickly. I'm a lot stronger, more flexible and coordinated than I thought!! Thank you Michael for all you do, Laura Brad Drake, October 2017 It has been a year since we began the 5 Rites exercise routine as taught by Michael at The Haven. Beginning slowly and working up to 21 repetitions seemed like a lot at the time. I am happy to say I still do the routine daily. I guess you can say it has become a part of my lifestyle. The body that stretches and moves everyday is a happy body. Doing the 5 Rites has been a big reason I don't need adjustments anymore. As a personal trainer myself I would recommend this short but powerful exercise routine for anyone and just about everyone. Em, October 2017 Just wanted to say 2 days down...rest of life to go...but can already feel a big difference in myself afterwards. It seems to make me more energetic but also things are brighter and clearer. I am benefiting hugely from more blood flow and oxygen. Seriously for 10 mins effort this is a winner. Thank you so much.
