  2. Welcome to the newsletter of Boquete Health and Hospice Is this email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser. 2018 Boquete Health and Hospice Officers On February 8, BHHF held the annual election of officers at our volunteer luncheon. The officers for 2018 are David Wulf- President, Laurie Collier- Vice-President, Linda Sanchez-Secretary and Merl Will-Wallace-Treasurer. BHHF accomplished almost all of the 2017 goals that were set last year. In the near future the board will be meeting to develop the 2018 goals. President: David Wulf Vice-President: Laurie Collier Treasurer: Merl Will-Wallace Secretary: Linda Sanchez The History of Boquete Health and Hospice In 2006 John and Babbie Earle decided to form a hospice organization in the Boquete area. Having been volunteers of two hospices in the U.S. for 30 years, they were firm believers in the concept of death with dignity, and palliative care for the infirm and dying. In 2007 John and Babbie financed and formed the Boquete Hospice and Health Foundation, with the help of Jerry Hendrick and Mary Feldbrugge. Services were offered to the ex-pat community, given limited Spanish language skills of the volunteers, and the complication of creating a separate Spanish speaking administration. As founding members they added the concept of health support, realizing that there were many ex-pats in the community that would need help when incapacitated or infirm. They decided that BHHF would provide temporary services such as; driving, shopping, delivering meals and performing basic household chores. BHHF had now developed two missions. The first goal was to create an operating manual. With help from many people and sources from New England hospice organizations, the manual was written. Today it is still used (with yearly updates) for trainings and guidance. Next, trained volunteers were needed. BHHF is very fortunate to have Beverly Stearns as our training officer, a job she has done so well for many years. Many others have contributed to the training, such as; nurses, communication experts, and doctors. As of the last training, there are more than eighty people that have benefitted from this instruction! Another mission was added when BHHF brought in containers of medical equipment to loan out to members of the community; both ex-pats and Panamanians. Oxygen concentrators, wheel chairs, commodes, hospital beds, and more, are all available to the entire community, free, delivered and cared for by more dedicated volunteers. BHHF also recognized the need for a list of current blood donors for times of need, since blood banks aren’t common here. The palliative care program in Boquete, mandated by the government, is an example of where BHHF hopes to work with the government to renew the vision of death with dignity and minimal suffering. Many people have worked hard to get BHHF where it is today; the volunteers provide care and compassion at especially difficult times of life. BHHF volunteers will tell you the rewards they receive from doing this work far exceed the time and effort they put in. Babbie and John express profound thanks to all the trainers, volunteers, administrators and organizer for their many contributions to create this viable and valuable organization. Best Wishes to Karen Hill Karen Hill has been a member of Boquete Health and Hospice for many years. Her contributions to our organization are numerous. She has left the Boquete area to begin a new life in Bend, OR. Karen has contributed in numerous ways to BHHF: past-secretary, past-president, team leader and chair of the mentoring program. But most importantly, Karen is an example to all of us of the kindness it takes when we share our hearts, hands and help. Karen will be greatly missed by all of us. Her warm smile, thoughtful observations and gentle negotiation skills have helped to form BHHF into the organization it is today. We wish her the best as she begins her new adventure. Here is a poem for Karen that expresses the feelings of us all: Karen Hill Dedicated hearts like Karen Hill’s Are not so easy to find. It takes a special person to be So generous and kind. To care so much for others Is a quality all too rare. Yet Karen gave her time and talents, For all in need to share. So thank you for being a BHHF volunteer, We're privileged to work with you. When will it erupt and what are the real dangers? Dr. Paul Myers retired geology professor (University of Wisconsin, 1968-1997), with considerable volcano experience, will review recent studies which accurately describe Baru’s long, unique history, and enumerate its most probable hazards . . . especially for people living in the Caldera River valley. Valleys radiating from the Baru summit are potential pathways for dangerous mudflows called lahars. He will close with suggestions for mitigating the deadliest effects of a Baru eruption. Following the talk, Dr. Myers will distribute hand-outs and solicit participants for a March 3 caravan tour of the Boquete area. Tuesday, March 6 – Stressed? Interpersonal conflicts? Cope better by learning to “Surf it!” Stress is a normal phenomenon of life; without it boredom would set in; but too much of it causes health problems. The latest research indicates that it’s not stress, per se, that causes problems, but one’s attitude towards it. There are many techniques offered to ‘manage’ stress, to avoid or release stress, and a new model of ‘stress surfing’ created by a Russian psychiatrist that offers a way to ride the energy wave of stress and benefit from it. This talk will present research, insights and simple but powerful techniques based on ‘stress surfing’ to help cope better with stress and interpersonal conflicts, which are often sources of stress and challenges. Dr. Theo Cope has presented workshops on ‘stress surfing’ to embassies, international companies, patients, parents and students while living in China and he is part of an international “Stress Surfing” network. Food and drinks - including popcorn - are available for purchase. ------------------------------ We don't charge admission, but we do ask for donations to support BCP and the Film Club program. February 25 - No Movie (Jazz & Blues Festival at the Feria) =========================================================================== I was not able to procure a copy of Honeydripper, so we will be watching "Lost in Translation this coming Sunday. Sunday Movie - February 18 @ 1pm: Lost in Translation (USA - 2003) Rated R Ratings: IMDB - 7.8, Roger Ebert - 4/4. Rotten Tomatoes - 95% From a review by James Berardinelli at Reelviews.net: Simply put, Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation is an amazing motion picture. There may be some controversy over whether she truly wrote the screenplay on her own (there are sequences that argue that she at least had help from someone with a little more experience in life and marriage), but that doesn't impact the final analysis. This study into the unfathomable depths of human relationships has more honesty than 95% of the movies I have seen this year. Beautifully photographed with some amazing shots of nighttime Tokyo (and I thought Times Square was garish!), and a gorgeously composed scene of two characters reflected in a plate glass window as they hold a conversation, this movie has a look to match its acting and content. The film details the "accidental" relationship that develops between Bob (Bill Murray) and Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson). Bob, an internationally recognized actor on the downside of his career, is in Tokyo filming a series of ads for a whiskey company. Charlotte, a recent Yale graduate, is accompanying her photographer husband (Giovanni Ribisi) on a business trip. However, she spends most of the time alone. Bob and Charlotte's first few encounters are casual - on an elevator, in a bar. Gradually, however, they begin to seek out one another and a bond develops. The two eventually spend nearly every waking hour together, holding deep conversations and finding ways to avoid the eventual parting that both know must occur. Lost in Translation is smart and perceptive about how people interact on a personal level. It portrays the disorientation of the two main characters flawlessly. They are two normal individuals who might not offer each other more than a smile under ordinary circumstances, but, put together in a place where they don't understand the language or customs and have no one else to turn to, their attachment is potent. 13. El Matador’s NEW MOLD AND ODOR KILLER SERVICE The name, El Matador means “the killer.” Every El Matador product is designed to kill something. It may be germs, mold, arthritis, osteoporosis, candida infections, rust or other things. If you would like a list of El Matador products and some information, send an email to usn11958@gmail.com with the subject El Matador This announcement is about a service to kill something and not about a product. Probably all of us have had the experience of noticing musty, moldy odors in the bathrooms, bedrooms, closets, store rooms, cabinets or other areas of our homes. Some homes and cars also have cigarette smoke odors, and others have dog or cat odors or strong kitchen odors. For any of these, and more, the answer is using El Matador Mold and Odor Killer Service. For preventing or killing mold on specific articles of clothing, shoes, furniture, area rugs, draperies, etc., it’s hard to beat El Matador Mold Killer in spray bottles. But for killing mold and its odors in whole rooms or whole houses, you need ozone that can permeate all the nooks and crannies of the house. There are some very nice (and rather expensive) ozone air freshening machines that can be kept in your home, running 24 hours per day. Back in the US I had one. But here we tend to leave windows and doors open most of the time, which allows the ozone to drift out of the house and not do its job. Also you generally need a higher concentration of ozone to kill off mold infections. El Matador is offering for rent a commercial-grade ozone generator. It produces a lot of ozone to produce a “shock treatment” in your room, home or car. This is not the type of machine that you can just leave running in your home all the time. You need to place it in a central part of the area you wish to treat, open all closets, cabinets and cubby holes, close all the windows and outside doors, turn on ceiling fans or circulating fans and go away while the ozone is permeating your home. The time for mold treatment depends on the total area. It can also depend on the degree of mold growth you need to deal with. A rule of thumb is about an hour for every 100 square feet or 10 square meters. The time for clearing cigarette smoke odors and other odors can usually be shorter, while heavier mold problems make take longer. Smaller cars need around one hour of treatment, while station wagons and SUV’s need around two hours. The machine has a one hour timer and a continuous “ON” switch. If you plan to go away while your home is treated for a number of hours, I can loan a timer for longer operation. After treatment, you need to allow thirty to forty minutes to air out the room(s) or house. The Ozone is not dangerous, but breathing it at concentrated levels may irritate your nose or throat. The rental rate for the machine is $15.00 for 24 hours or fraction thereof. There is no extra charge if you need to borrow a timer. Both use normal 120 volt household electricity. There is a $50.00 refundable deposit, so payment at pickup is $65.00. If you find that you need to keep the machine for more than 24 hours, you can call me to say you need the extra time, and I can deduct the fee for the extra day from the deposit. The deposit or remaining balance is refunded at the time the machine is returned. You may reserve the machine by calling me at 6745-2828 or sending an email to usn11958@gmail.com. It can be picked up at my house in Alto Boquete by arrangement or on Tuesday mornings at the Tuesday Market with return to my house. Kill your odor problems with El Matador Bob Gregory, the El Matador dude

  15. Need Your Knees Fixed? Or your hips, back, shoulder, . . . ! Many of you have asked about the availability of prolotherapy treatment for arthritis, especially of the knees and hips. This year we have obtained a centrifuge for the Alfa Clinic so that they can prepare PRP for prolotherapy treatments. This will cut the number of necessary treatments by half, so you’ll get better quicker. Last week we treated our first three patients here in Boquete with PRP prolotherapy, so our clinical system here is now tested and proven. Prolotherapy is the only known way to cure osteoarthritis. It’s also very good for chronic sprains and strains. It takes two treatments, on average, about a month apart and the success rate is greater than 80%. If you’re interested in getting into the details please visit our website pages for: Arthritis: http://rejuvacare.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=188&Itemid=469 Back pain: http://rejuvacare.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=187&Itemid=470 In Boquete we work with Dra.
