  1. Since the other post about an earthquake appears to be proprietary and closed to discussion, here's a bit more info.

The 5.0 movement at 6:38 a.m. appears to have been about mid-point between Paso Canoas and Rio Serreno.

The University of Panama has seismological equipment in various locations country wide to monitor earth movement.

I believe the Canadian government has long had the power to take away a passport if the holder owes money to the government (i.e., taxes, child support, etc).

Canadian passports can be refused, revoked, cancelled or suspended for a number of things but not for unpaid taxes.

In Canada deadbeat dads who are delinquent in child support can lose their privilege to travel. Same deal in Costa Rica.

"A person who fails to pay child support or alimony can be subject to the Family Orders and Agreements Enforcement Assistant Act". Under this Act, the Minister of CIC must refuse passport services to individuals subject to that Act and suspend any current passports."

Also, this information is not spam. I have read the news articles about this new power of the I.R.S.

Also, many people have taxes that are beyond the power of Turbo Tax. For those people they pay for professional help.

So, Judy and Keith, did you both get up on the wrong side of bed this morning?

Maybe it's because I feel an ad for a tax accountant in Florida isn't really community news.

  5. A third eastbound lane will be added to the Pan American Highway between the elevated overpass at the Universidad Autonoma and the Dos Bombas entrance to David. (by the two gas stations) This is a section of highway which is often backed up.

Can somebody tell me how Whatsapp works?  I went to the website and there wasn't really any information to tell me exactly what it does.  Is it for text messaging without getting charged?  Does it work with an unlocked iPhone 3 (there was something about it not working on a jailbroken phone???).  If a friend in the U.S. has Whatsapp, can we text each other without being charged for international calls like we would be for regular texting?  Do you get a Whatsapp number, like a phone number?

Big infraestructure projects are offered in Panama to foreign contractors because of the size, complexity, technical requirements and financial capability.   This project was awarded to a group formed by a contractor from Spain, a contractor from Italy and a contractor from Europe.  It was supposed that those people have better experience and expertise in this type of jobs than our panamanians contractors can do.

Regarding this cracks and according to some comments from civil engineers and my own experience resembles what it is called"  "cold joints".   It is a separation between different concrete pours because the new concrete does not adhere well to the old concrete.  As you can see the crack is in the same horizontal plane that makes us to think it is the pouring line of each batch of concrete.  If that is the real cause it could be repaired but it will depend on the method and products to do the repair.

We are still waiting for the diagnosis of the cause of the cracks in order to see if the solution of the problem will be the most effective and will have the durabilty desired and will perform as required.

We see cold joints all the time here in residential and commercial construction in columns and lintels because of limitations imposed by the length of the boards used for forming.

Slabs often end up with cold joints due to: a/ out of materials, or b/ quitting time.

Marcelyn, I believe this is in Panama City. There is no National Hospital or Hospital Nacional in David. The "public" hospital there is Hospital Regional. The photo with the story suggests, too, that it's in Panama City. The piece certainly could be clearer.

Hospital Nacional is a small private hospital in the heart of Panama City.

  9. oops, I'm a bad guy again.

    In my Inbox this morning..

"Needed to address my dismay personally and directly to you.."

"Why would a new person and business in the Community, who is trying to offer a small lovely event, be subjected to unnecessary “digs” about their announcement?  Cacao Café should be welcomed to Boquete, not receive unwelcoming comments.

Now they are being admonished that some will not even read it because it is in red. Ridiculous. Shall Panama Red and Al’s Cajóns, be criticized too?"

"This saddens me all over again about how difficult it is for well-meaning folks to use these forums."

    Yikes!
