Panama has lost 65 per cent of its original forest cover due to a deforestation rate of around 20,000 hectares a year

Perhaps that number is an average, calculated using the 195 years since the founding of Panama, and isn't necessarily the current rate.

There is a lot of information about this program and other environmental issues at this site. http://www.miambiente.gob.pa/index.php/2013-02-20-08-59-23/noticias/noticias-de-portada/796-ii-gran-dia-nacional-de-reforestacion

The stated goal is to reforest is a million hectares in 20 years.

  2. Most communications from the government seem to come after the fact in the form of photo-ops.

The President was in Chiriqui with a vigorous schedule for two days but looking back at his Twitter feed I don't see any advance notice posted. This press release was issued on Thursday, the day he arrived.

Some of the other projects the President inspected on this visit were the Hospital in Bugaba, the Kenny Serracin stadium in David, a new bridge over the Rio Esti near Gualaca, and the highway to Puerto Armuelles.

He was on the local Radio Chiriqui station Thursday evening.

  3. Today is the 2nd annual Gran Dia de Reforestacion in Panama.

In Chiriqui, teams will be planting along the banks of the Rio Chiriqui near Gualaca and also near Volcan

  4. Panama City is relatively close, imo. I leave the house in Alto at 7:00 a.m. and arrive there in Albrook at 9:00 a.m. or very shortly thereafter for about $60.

The weather in the city looked good this morning so I drove back. From downtown P.C. to Rey in David ...six hours. No cruise control or tickets.

The highway expansion is far from finished.

I was told some time ago that Airbox is the least expensive for heavy inbound shipments, which come by boat. You might want to check with them if you're not in a hurry.

Another alternative for very large or heavy items is to consolidate with Riba Smith and ship out of Florida via DELVI Logistics.

They will clear your goods and forward them to Boquete via Fletes Chavales.

Rates are listed for both Air and Sea options.   http://www.ribasmith.com/rimith/images/pdfs/Form-New-Address.pdf

In spite of the recent problem eShop (and the other shippers apparently too) has had with customs holding up packages, I have always received packages from them in a timely manner.  Also they don't require a monthly fee with an added expense if the package is over the weight limit, as MBE does.

It is not necessary to have a Box or account with monthly fees at MBE in order to use their services. I pay by the piece and have done so since they opened.

  7. Amazing how stories get stretched out of shape. At no time was the President 'detained', as is suggested here.

A number of local reporters who were actually on site stated that some protesters threw stones and the signing was moved to the local school. Four policemen suffered minor injuries and offenders claim they were beaten afterwards.

"President Juan Carlos Varela was detained after he was about to give a public speech praising a recent deal with some Indigenous leaders to resume construction. Opponents of that agreement threw stones at police cars, injuring four officers, reported local media."

  8. PJ, the President of Panama is the leader of a sovereign nation, even if it's a small one. I suppose it depends on how you define power, but in my opinion, the governor of a state in the U.S. isn't even on the same playing field.

It's not unusual to see politicians or Ministers of the government at regional Airports, in the lounge, or on the plane. Sometimes I greet them with a "buenos dias Ministro".

Mireya Moscoso lives in Pedasi but comes here almost every week to manage her farm. I have seen her  at Banco General.

  9. "A compromise is the art of dividing a cake in such a way that everyone believes he has the biggest piece" Ludwig Erhard

As hard as the government has tried, I'm not sure that we will ever see a resolution to this situation that will please everybody.

A compromise is the art of dividing a cake in such a way that everyone believes he has the biggest piece.
