I also am in the middle of configuring a new laptop as I work to get this notice out in a timely manner. I will review recommendations from members, as well as doing my usual research to select films, and send the January schedule out next week to those on our email list. (If you want to be added to - or removed from - our email list, reply to BoqueteFilmClub@gmail.com.) ---------------------------------- Sunday, December 24 @ 1:00pm - Joyeux Noël (USA - 1999) 1 hour, 54 minutes - Rated "PG" Ratings: 7.8 - IMDB, 74% - Rotten Tomatoes, 3/4 - Roger Ebert Wikipedia: Joyeux Noël ('Merry Christmas') is a 2005 epic war drama film based on the Christmas truce of December 1914, depicted through the eyes of French, British, and German soldiers. It was written and directed by Christian Carion. It was screened out of competition at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival. The film, which included one of the last appearances of Ian Richardson before his death, was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 78th Academy Awards. It is a fictionalized account of an actual event that took place in December 1914 when Wilhelm, German Crown Prince, sent the lead singer of the Berlin Imperial Opera company on a solo visit to the front line. Singing by the tenor, Walter Kirchhoff, to the 120th and 124th Württemberg regiments led French soldiers in their trenches to stand up and applaud. Google: With the advent of World War I, Europe is thrown into a brutal and vicious chaos as men are forced to kill or be killed. While blood soaks the battlefield as Christmas approaches, the men in the trenches of the Western Front face a transformation, however fleeting, toward peace and goodwill. Against all odds, four unlikely individuals from opposing sides (Diane Kruger, Benno Fürmann, Guillaume Canet, Gary Lewis) bond during this bloodless respite to experience the hope and goodness in humanity. 11. Welcome to the newsletter of Boquete Health and Hospice Is this email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser. Looking Back on 2017 Early in 2017 the BHHF board met to define our vision and mission statement and goals for the year. Our vision and mission statement is: To inform and promote community health: and, to support people with needs by providing information, equipment and services. The goals were developed this year to reflect the expansion of our services to the Boquete and surrounding area. Our goal of providing health information to the community was addressed with a new and informative website, Being Prepared and Preventing Falls presentations, an informational video and the first Health Fair. This educational outreach increased the public awareness of our organization as well as provided vital health information. Our equipment loan program has grown. We now have an additional storage room for our equipment and now have room to store our 17 oxygen concentrators. At this time about 25% of our equipment is loaned out to Panamanians. We hope to expand our loan program even more to the Panamanian and expat community. Our home health care and hospice services continue to be an important part of our organization. We have expanded our respiratory support program. Numerous meals were delivered, home visitations made, rides given and home support care provided this past year. We continue to recruit volunteers to maintain our services and twenty-three individuals have signed up so far for the next training to take place in early 2018. BHHF was successful in expanding our programs and reaching out even more to the community. In return, we have received many generous donations which will enable us to continue growing and improving. Looking forward to 2018 the board will meet and create new goals for the coming year. Many thanks to our volunteers and to the community for supporting us. “A Gift for You!” Look for Boquete Health in 2018 at the BCP Tuesday Market. We have a gift for you! 16. See us at the BCP Tuesday Morning Market. Richar's art will be at my table on the back terrace under the "Xulonn" sign. I am continuing to collaborate with and promote Boquete's Peruvian born and incredibly talented artist, Richar Huiza. I recently gave him a professional-grade entry-level pyrography system so he could try artistic "woodburning." I also showed him pictures and YouTube videos of basic and advanced techniques, and some examples of works by the best pyrographers out there. I told him that those examples were for inspiration, and not to copy. I was literally astounded at how he took to this new medium, and within days he was creating professional quality pyrographic art to complement his exquisite acrylic bird paintings. Richar's most recent fine art piece is a 9" cedar plate with an acrylic painting on the front and a personalized message in pyrography on the back. I turn the cedro rojo (local red cedar) plates on my lathe, and Richar does the painting and pyrography. The one below was a commission for a Violet Saberwing hummingbird in acrylic on the front, and a custom message in pyrography on the back. Richar can create realistic images from your photo or image, and it only takes a couple of days if there is no backlog. . (Excuse the first two poor pictures - my camera pics disappeared and I had to use cellphone photos.) The below photo of a quetzal plate shows the color and beauty of Richar's acrylic paintings much better. Please visit my table on the back terrace (under the the "Xulonn" sign) at the Tuesday BCP Market to view and purchase Richar's art - or to place orders for custom work. (You can talk Richar on Tuesdays, because he will be at the market selling his other arts, crafts and jewelry.) ------------------------------------- Here is a 4" square pyrography piece that is also available for sale. Note the subtle use of color. ------------------------------------- And here is a custom 4" pyrograph of Charlie, made for his owners, very good friends who live here in Boquete. You can have one just like it of your pet for only $30. David van Harn My Artisan Woodturnings & Fine Art by Richar Huiza Boquete, Chiriqui, Panama Cell Phone: 6706-7236 e-mail: dvanharn@gmail.com

  18. ENROLLMENT OPEN SEASON FOR THE ALTO AL CRIMEN/HOSPITAL COOPERATIVO MEDICAL DISCOUNT PLAN. Beginning December 19 at the Tuesday Market we will once again have the Hospital Cooperativo discount medical plan open for renewals and for new enrollments. Hospital Cooperativo is the ONLY non-profit hospital in Panama. It offers a wide range of basic medical services and has nineteen affiliated doctors plus a number of psychologists and nutritionists. GOOD NEWS! Beginning in January 2018, a new doctor will be affiliated with the hospital. She is the daughter of Doctor Luis Wong, the hospital administrator. Dra. Wong is a radiologist and will be managing the X-ray and ultrasound imaging facilities. She speaks ENGLISH! Dra. Wong has been practicing medicine in Spain. The medical plan has no age limits, no waiting period and no pre-existing condition restrictions. Discounts apply to doctor consultations, hospital services, hospital room charges, operating room services, prescription drugs at the pharmacy and emergency room services. Discounts range from 25% to 30% for most services and 50% for emergency room services. And the discounts are off already very low prices because the hospital is non-profit. Because the Alto al Crimen emergency bilingual hotline will be closing down, fees for the plan will no longer include donations to AAC. The charge for the plan will be $120 per person. A separate contract and information sheet will be required for each person. Also, a clear, legible copy of each person's ID must be provided. Copies of Cedulas are preferred, but if you have a Pensionado Card or Passport, copies of them are also acceptable. We are in a transitional stage of offering this service and will need payment in cash only. All proceeds will go the the hospital. Alto al Crimen will have a table at the BCP Tuesday market on December 19 from about 9 AM until Noon. We plan to offer other enrollment or renewal opportunities until January 16. But please do not delay. If too many people wait until the last minute to enroll, there will not be enough time for everyone. The hospital's contract is in Spanish, but we will have English translation copies available for you to read. We'll also have a list of doctors and their specialties and a schedule of the discounts. Below is a copy of the information sheet we need to have for each enrollee. If you copy it and print the number of copies you will need, you can complete the forms and bring them with you. That will make your enrollment work faster and better. Be sure to complete the form in clearly legible block letters. Your address does not need to contain detailed information because it is not used for dispatching ambulances or other emergency services. We need this form for both new enrollments and for renewals.
