ONLY 6 SPACES AVAILABLE Contact: Judith Tovar – easytravel@cwpanama.net OR Linda Hart – lhart249@hotmail.com Panama The Musical Reviewed by M. Stefan panama articles coronado community Panama The Musical Reviewed by M. Stefan Published: 28 February, 2018 Who in their right mind would write a Broadway-style musical, set it in Panama in the Roaring 20’s, and with an all Panamanian cast and crew? Who would possibly think they could get the Panamanian Ministry of tourism, Copa Airlines, Ron Abuelo rum, and others to become sponsors? And then who could possibly have the sheer audacity to think they could attract the attention and assistance of big-time producers, songwriters, scriptwriters and others from Broadway and Toronto? Were they out of their minds? Spending too much time baking their brains in the Panamanian sun? Well, T. Rob Brown, Yolanda van der Kolk-Brown, and Tara Van Der Kolk did all that and more! Over a period of 5 years, they conceived, wrote, rewrote and re-rewrote an amazing musical love story set in 1920’s Panama. They actually found investors and sponsors, one of the best directors in Panama and an amazingly talented cast of Panamanian actors who sing, dance and deliver their lines in English. With the help of top-level writers and producers from Canada and the USA, they have refined and re-refined their creation to a point where it is filling seats in one of the largest theaters in Panama, Teatro Ateneo in the City of Knowledge (Ciudad del Saber). The story: Set in 1927, a mother and 2 daughters are forced to leave the Canal Zone when the father dies and leaves the family destitute. They move to Casco Viejo. To make ends meet, the Mama de Luna (superbly portrayed by Gaby Gnazzo) sells her catalog of songs to Eddie Machete, a local cabaret owner (played with perfect raised eyebrow evilness by Randy Dominguez). Meanwhile, Melody the eldest daughter, wonderfully played by Alexandra Cordoba, wins a trip to New York as 1st prize in a songwriting contest. Her singing boyfriend Tito (Julio Barsallo) professes his love for her and proposes. But, alas, things don’t work out as we hope. Sr. Machete has other plans. Before the whole family can escape to New York, Sr. Machete forces them to stay and blackmails the mother into a marriage contract on Melody. So, Tito leaves for New York to pursue fame and fortune as the new Latin Lover, all the while secretly pining for Melody. Sound a bit far-fetched? Have you ever actually read the storyline of some of the biggest musical successes? This is the kind of plot of which hits are made. In addition to the above-mentioned actors, I feel compelled to highlight the wonderful performances of two other female cast members. 12-year-old Yael Danon as Harmony de Luna is unbelievably talented and poised. She carries off the role as the younger daughter with a maturity and skill far beyond her years. Watch for her to shine in international stage and film productions in the years to come. Also, a revelation is Emely Myles as Yavida. This woman carries off the secondary but important role as friend and fortune teller. She belts out a couple of blues-inspired songs which make your heart stop. I only wish they gave her more songs. She’s a new Big Moma Thornton in the making. While everyone is in agreement as to the quality of Panama the Musical, in the interest of full disclosure, I need to mention that my wife and I are minor investors in the Panama production. Also, a 10% portion of the net proceeds will be donated to the Rotary Club of Playa Coronado’s youth programs. The play runs through March 4 at Teatro Ateneo in Ciudad del Saber.

  12. 10:30 in the BCP Theater Tuesday, February 27 -- Volcan Baru, a sleeping volcano, looms ominously on our western horizon. When will it erupt and what are the real dangers? Dr. Paul Myers retired geology professor (University of Wisconsin, 1968-1997), with considerable volcano experience, will review recent studies which accurately describe Baru’s long, unique history, and enumerate its most probable hazards . . . especially for people living in the Caldera River valley. Valleys radiating from the Baru summit are potential pathways for dangerous mudflows called lahars. He will close with suggestions for mitigating the deadliest effects of a Baru eruption. Following the talk, Dr. Myers will distribute hand-outs and solicit participants for a March 3 caravan tour of the Boquete area. Tuesday, March 6 – Stressed? Interpersonal conflicts? Cope better by learning to “Surf it!” Stress is a normal phenomenon of life; without it boredom would set in; but too much of it causes health problems. The latest research indicates that it’s not stress, per se, that causes problems, but one’s attitude towards it. There are many techniques offered to ‘manage’ stress, to avoid or release stress, and a new model of ‘stress surfing’ created by a Russian psychiatrist that offers a way to ride the energy wave of stress and benefit from it. This talk will present research, insights and simple but powerful techniques based on ‘stress surfing’ to help cope better with stress and interpersonal conflicts, which are often sources of stress and challenges. Dr. Theo Cope has presented workshops on ‘stress surfing’ to embassies, international companies, patients, parents and students while living in China and he is part of an international “Stress Surfing” network. 14. DAYCARE - BOARDING!! Volunteers (like you) are CRITICAL to the success of DogCamp! There are about 40 DogCamp rescued dogs longing to be adopted ! Caring for all these dogs is expensive and A LOT of work! A regular volunteer team assisting with the chores - feeding, walking, playing, petting, cleaning up, bathing, & laundry will provide DogCamp founders Javier and Magaly more time for the equally important work of training these rescued dogs, training DogCamp volunteers, promoting adoptions, raising money for expenses, educating families about responsible pet ownership, and rescuing more abandoned, abused, and neglected dogs. Just as it takes a village to raise a child – it takes a community of generous people to provide a successful animal rescue organization ! The more these rescued dogs interact with caring people from within our community, the more socialized & well mannered they will become, resulting in more dogs being adopted into loving families desiring to properly care for them. We’ve made it easy for you to sign up and join our team! 20. Welcome to the newsletter of Boquete Health and Hospice Is this email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser. 2018 Boquete Health and Hospice Officers On February 8, BHHF held the annual election of officers at our volunteer luncheon. The officers for 2018 are David Wulf- President, Laurie Collier- Vice-President, Linda Sanchez-Secretary and Merl Will-Wallace-Treasurer. BHHF accomplished almost all of the 2017 goals that were set last year. In the near future the board will be meeting to develop the 2018 goals. President: David Wulf Vice-President: Laurie Collier Treasurer: Merl Will-Wallace Secretary: Linda Sanchez The History of Boquete Health and Hospice In 2006 John and Babbie Earle decided to form a hospice organization in the Boquete area. Having been volunteers of two hospices in the U.S. for 30 years, they were firm believers in the concept of death with dignity, and palliative care for the infirm and dying. In 2007 John and Babbie financed and formed the Boquete Hospice and Health Foundation, with the help of Jerry Hendrick and Mary Feldbrugge. Services were offered to the ex-pat community, given limited Spanish language skills of the volunteers, and the complication of creating a separate Spanish speaking administration. As founding members they added the concept of health support, realizing that there were many ex-pats in the community that would need help when incapacitated or infirm. They decided that BHHF would provide temporary services such as; driving, shopping, delivering meals and performing basic household chores. BHHF had now developed two missions. The first goal was to create an operating manual. With help from many people and sources from New England hospice organizations, the manual was written. Today it is still used (with yearly updates) for trainings and guidance. Next, trained volunteers were needed. BHHF is very fortunate to have Beverly Stearns as our training officer, a job she has done so well for many years. Many others have contributed to the training, such as; nurses, communication experts, and doctors. As of the last training, there are more than eighty people that have benefitted from this instruction! Another mission was added when BHHF brought in containers of medical equipment to loan out to members of the community; both ex-pats and Panamanians. Oxygen concentrators, wheel chairs, commodes, hospital beds, and more, are all available to the entire community, free, delivered and cared for by more dedicated volunteers. BHHF also recognized the need for a list of current blood donors for times of need, since blood banks aren’t common here. The palliative care program in Boquete, mandated by the government, is an example of where BHHF hopes to work with the government to renew the vision of death with dignity and minimal suffering. Many people have worked hard to get BHHF where it is today; the volunteers provide care and compassion at especially difficult times of life. BHHF volunteers will tell you the rewards they receive from doing this work far exceed the time and effort they put in. Babbie and John express profound thanks to all the trainers, volunteers, administrators and organizer for their many contributions to create this viable and valuable organization. Best Wishes to Karen Hill Karen Hill has been a member of Boquete Health and Hospice for many years. Her contributions to our organization are numerous. She has left the Boquete area to begin a new life in Bend, OR. Karen has contributed in numerous ways to BHHF: past-secretary, past-president, team leader and chair of the mentoring program. But most importantly, Karen is an example to all of us of the kindness it takes when we share our hearts, hands and help. Karen will be greatly missed by all of us. Her warm smile, thoughtful observations and gentle negotiation skills have helped to form BHHF into the organization it is today. We wish her the best as she begins her new adventure. Here is a poem for Karen that expresses the feelings of us all: Karen Hill Dedicated hearts like Karen Hill’s Are not so easy to find. It takes a special person to be So generous and kind. To care so much for others Is a quality all too rare. Yet Karen gave her time and talents, For all in need to share. So thank you for being a BHHF volunteer, We're privileged to work with you. We want you to know how appreciated you are, Not just today, but your whole life through. We're GROOVING at the Boquete Blues and Jazz Festival!
