  5. OK...for the first time we took our dog Flossy to the beach. We fully planned a fun filled frolicking time in the surf there at Las Lajas. Soon we figured we'd have our dog riding a surfboard...like us ! OK, we come to discover the dog is absolutely terrified of the ocean......like this: ( hrumpf !)
  6. Bonnie...thanks for the DONATE link. If we are grateful for what you all do...we should be able to donate.
  7. Regarding dog rescue...... Let me say that this dog and my husband have fallen in love. Bill and I will be celebrating our 45th wedding anniversary in a sweet little beach house rental that will allow us to take Flossy...(try figure) Our lives now seem to revolves around the dog.(..and it's a GOOD thing......something different, unexpected and very special). This dog is now an essential part of our life. Thanks again Judy, Dottie, Javier and Magaly ,Ruby and the entire team. You are making lives for dogs better................ but as well....ours !!!! Alison
  8. I sure do hope that sweet little dog finds a home. All I can say is we are so grateful for all the dog rescue support folks. We found a wandering dog and fully intended to have it adopted. While waiting, we fell in love with her. We have not regretted one day of dog ownership. (And this is from two folks who never in their wildest dreams thought they would own a doggie. ) This was taken when she was still banished from inside the house in the early days. She is now a very spoiled inside the house dog with her own furniture ! Alison
  9. Probably a good idea. Talk to a lot of different folks who've been here awhile. There is such a wonderful diversity of settlers here I have no doubt you will find your niche as well a location that suits you.
  10. Marcela... Move on. Don't let some minor bump in the road stop you from volunteering here. The dog folks are some great people. Alison
  11. We did the "see it - buy it" insta-move to Boquete as well. That was 9 years ago and we have not regretted the decision. That said we had excellent advice from folks here in Boquete. We learned about micro climates, water shortages here and there etc. It was the "Cliff's Notes" introduction to Boquete and it served us well. Now there are more resources like the Boquete Handbook and sites such as CL where a question turns into a cool project that benefits the group, like the vet/pet help list that's going to be made. Doug is correct...get good advice from several people. Best from those folks who have been here for some time.
  12. Wonder if Howard Hill would video it.....That would be a great one to put on DVD's for new pet owner settlers here. Sell it as a donation to Amigos de Animales...nuther idea. Hey I'm full of it !...(no comment) Alison
  13. Well yes Pantah I agree. However we've been traveling for decades and 90 days has been the most common. Here in Panama 180 is the practice but not the law...unless something changed that I don't know of. Resident- tourists surely understand the risks of electing that mode of residing here. If not...they should.
  14. If Kris Berg ( Howling Success) states that there is nothing for dogs with regard to snake bite treatment in this country I'd tend to believe her. I guess it's just a matter of being proactive as we have discussed in another thread "Pests". We pretty much keep our dog out of the bushes and field across the street. (She loves to hunt lizards.) Unfortunately it's a set up for a snake bite. I think no matter what we do snake bite is always a possible. That said, we do our best to keep her safe, active and happy without entering the danger zone. Six feet from where I'm sitting right there on the porch we killed a 6 inch Fer de Lance....this year
  15. I seriously doubt that would happen. It could return to every three months. That has always been the standard time period world wide. That said the best bet is always to do what you can to insure a permanent residency status. It relieves you of the worry to a degree.
  16. We use a fumigation service by a guy named Roy. He does a lot of homes here in Brisas and his scheduled day for Brisas is the last Saturday of each month. (He drives a red pick up) He sprays an odorless product inside the house along all baseboards. He then sprays all the yard with a different product. He usually shows up at our house at around 10 am. He will as well attend to any special insect issue you have...like those pesky teeny kitchen ants...or even a mouse in the house. The phone # I have for Roy is 6453-3858 . I believe this # may have changed, and i can't find his card or any of his old receipts. Roy charges $25.00 I will try to remember to let you know and bring him by your house if you'd like. Remind me...he won't be here for a couple weeks ... Alison
  17. Bonnie...keep trying. Amazon.com I believe is another source on the Benadryl. Phyllis...Yes the Fer de lance is not only potentially deadly but mean/ aggressive. It hides well and it is well known that the young teeny ones can be worse than a larger one as they eject more venom due to immaturity. There may be no warning as with a rattle snake that you can hear. The Fer de lance can hide extremely well aside a log, dead wood or in a pile of leaves. Our gardener will not weed a bed without my spraying kangaroo the day before and as well having mothballs tossed about. He uses gloves and as well a stick to poke before proceeding bit by bit. You can garden yourself...but hire up a yard guy and work with him and learn how he does it. If I were to do it again i would not have planted thick low lying garden plants: Our house "before" And now: We have gravel as opposed to grass which I would not change. What I would do differently would be to use plants ( shrubs) such as crotons that can be pruned to where you can see the ground all around them. Walls made of rocks without mortar create a condominium for scorpions and as well neat little hidey-holes for snakes....I'd change that as well. Meanwhile we know where to be careful and as well we keep our yard fumigated . We learn a lot from our experienced gardener as well . In high grass I use boots, a stick in one hand , machete in the other and eyes peeled to the area around me......and as well Kevlar rattlesnake chaps. We gave up on clearing that field and now keep it low and slow growing with ( unfortunately) herbicide ...............................................................................................Alison
  18. He's up and about. Yes it was a Fer de Lance. He got to a regional hospital quickly thanks to a neighbor who drove him. The man said " It happened very quickly". OK...so you can have a bite happen before you even spot the snake. Be very careful.
  19. Diphenhydramine . Comes in 25 and 50 mg. Write it down on a paper and go to Any. They should sell it there.
  20. Professional fumigation inside and outside once a month has served us well. It does not however prevent you from a snake bite if you stick your hands in a flower bed weeding. A good Panamanian neighbor who is a long time resident of our little community and an avid gardener got a Fer de Lance bite on the hand just this week. We toss moths balls is all our thick beds and don't stick our hands in them if we can help it. It's an ongoing problem. Since the first of the year we've had three Fer de lance ...garage, back porch and road in front of the house. Much worse than a scorpion ! i
