  1. Fortunately, I am a hillbilly from the eastern slopes of the Himalayan mountains, so all drugs work great on me.
  2. Not that much. The flag of the vessel doesn't usually have any reference to who owns or operates the ship. The true owner may face a stiff fine for violating sanctions and also be barred from entering international ports. It's a huge civil and financial penalty, but nobody is going to jail, and the ship won't be sunk.
  3. I think you can still buy a weed whacker with a carburetor, so Big Oil's conspiracy didn't work. You can still get over a thousand weeds per hour. Just sayin'.
  4. Stealing from the government by elected or appointed officials seems to be both blatant and commonplace. And even if convicted, judges don't seem to impose any meaningful penalties. Expats can't do anything about it and Panamanians apparently seem to tolerate or even expect it.
  5. So, it's not as much of a recycling center as it is a one-day dump? I imagine the neighbors are less than thrilled.
  6. It's a pretty safe (but sad) bet that the drunk driving tonight will bring Panama's vehicular death toll to over 400 for the year.
  7. Don't forget about the moon landings in the late 60's and 70's that millions still think were fake. There is something weird about the need of many to suspect conspiracy. Years ago, I used to tell people that I saw the 100 mile per gallon carburetor in a display case in the Exxon lobby in Houston. (the rumor was that they had bought the patent in order to keep this gas-saving device off the market). At least 90% of the time, I was believed.
  8. Doesn't everyone use Mr. Peabody's Wayback Machine?
  9. I'm thinking that if cancer was cured 100% with this machine 80 years ago, we wouldn't have our current cancer mortality rate.
  10. Sounds like someone was conducting an IQ test on social media.
  11. Actually, Penny, you need an HDMI port on your TV to attach a Roku device. I'm now wondering whether you have one.
  12. I don't know if the Panamonte reserve has a higher proof than "normal" Panama Red Rum (which is a knee-wobbling 108 proof). But it is aged 25 years before bottling.
  13. The Panama Red Panamonte is the most exquisite overproofed rum on the planet.
  14. Bonnie's suggestion of the Roku box with remote is probably your least complicated and inexpensive option.
  15. CTCE is poised to replace Odebrecht as the favorite construction company of Panamanian politicians, it seems.
  16. I didn't go in the store as I was just using the then unopened station as a driving turnaround. But I could see furniture through the store windows.
  17. I'm a bit confused. Are tourists in Boquete getting sick on a regular basis? Is the town water that bad?? I've never read reports of that. I've never been sick from the water here, although I admittedly don't drink much water from the municipal supply (perhaps ice cubes?).
  18. The US State Department doesn't monitor water quality or quantity anywhere in the world. Not here or domestically in the USA. Their focus is entirely on diplomacy and foreign politics. And one can question how well they do in regards to that. I'm not sure anyone outside of Boquete monitors anything here.
  19. I can't imagine that the bridge will be complete before the festival begins on Feb 22. The workers have really stepped up their efforts in the past few weeks, but the span crossing the river has not commenced yet. After it is complete, I'm sure we'll have to wait for a ribbon-cutting ceremony that fits President Varela's calendar. I think an April opening of the bridge may be a bit optimistic.
  20. One of the things that drives me nuts about driving in Panama is the number of vehicles without functioning brake lights. It's not a huge percentage, but it's enough that it is dangerous to assume that the vehicle in front of you has them, and you will be alerted to sudden braking. Tailgating, especially without good visibility beyond the vehicle in front, is not a risk worth taking, in my opinion. The annual vehicle inspection required by law is a farce, as we all know.
