  1. Apparently there is almost always controversy in the onion market.

In order to stop the importation of lower cost, poor quality onions, laws were enacted a few years back which established minimum standards. Some will remember a few months ago when local producers here were gathered down at the Caldera turnoff in order to prevent the movement of imports.

Since onions are a staple and part of the Canasta Basica, consumer prices are controlled. Producers complain they can't grow national onions profitably at the controlled levels and importers say they can't purchase and supply imports at the prices set for them either.

Price controls were just renewed on the 6th and I think nationally grown onions remained at 60 cents a pound. I guess the catch is that there aren't any.

Arrangements have been made for 20,000 quintales to be imported from the U.S., half of which have arrived. A quintal is equal to 100 kilograms or about 220 pounds.

  2. The Ancient Tomb of Cacique Malchia in Volcan Baru

This video was released the other day which tells the story of the discovery of the tomb located at Sitio Barriles. Although it is narrated in Spanish, there are some subtitles and Dr. Weinstein can be heard speaking at points.

Watching the video led me to this site where Dr.Weinstein and other archaeologists have documented their studies in Panama.

Inspection ordered of Importadora Ricamar offices

Prosecutor Abel Zamorano has ordered the inspection of the offices of Importadora Ricamar, property of the family of the former President Ricardo Martinelli (2009-2014), as part of the research into the Cobranzas del Istmo case.

Today, police officers stood on guard outside the offices, located in Monte Oscuro. The firm is the parent company of the Super 99 supermarket chain.

The inspection was confirmed by former First Lady Marta Martinelli, who was also a candidate for vice president in 2014.

"If they are conducting an inspection, why are they preventing employees from entering the building? It's as if they are looking for a drug trafficker," she said.

In May 2015, prosecutors filed charges against Cobranzas del Istmo officials for irregularities related to a contract it received from the state to collect delinquent taxes.

Martinelli is linked to the case because the majority shareholder of Crobranzas del Istmo, Cristóbal Salerno, said he delivered bags of cash to the Ricamar offices in exchange for the contract.

The case against Martinelli was admitted by the plenum of the Supreme Court in September 2015. In February, the court rejected a petition by defense lawyers to dismiss the charges.

Meanwhile former President Martinelli continues to burn up Twitter with accounts of his 'persecution'.

    Bonnie,

Would you care to name the lawyer that is charging so little for your E Cedula  please?  I have heard that the process for pensionado is over $1,000 per person.

These are two different things, Marie.

Residency status (such as a Pensionado visa) is a pre-cursor to obtaining an E-Cedula.

I have made clear my..... special feelings... about lawyers but thoses lawyers fees for a E Cedula!!!   Ok.  They need to make money and have a living salary but....

I am not sure if you may need a lawyer for obtaining your E-Cedula if you have all your papers right and correct.

Another, rather unpopular, phantom abogado was clipping people $500 for the service when the program started.

    The Great Rubber Ducky Race

About 22 thousand rubber ducks competed in the 'great Rubber Ducky' race, a charitable activity held yesterday on the shores of the Cinta Costera 2, with the purpose of supporting the work in favor of children and young people of SOS Children's Villages. This initiative is carried out annually in various countries and has returned to Panama after a decade of absence, according to information from SOS Villages Panama and GAME Latin America Duck Racing Team. The event, whose parallel objective was to promote family entertainment, counted with artistic  and humorous presentations.

Roger, I just noticed that  I was not clear in my original post. And I understand that credit card fraud is rampant all over the world.

I offered her my pensionado card along with my credit card, as I usually do for purposes of identification. She returned my pensionado and asked for my passport. I have never had this happen before with a credit card transaction as the pensionado visa always has served as adequate identification. The question is why she wouldn't take my pensionado but, when she spotted my driver's license, said that it would serve her purpose instead, in the absence of a passport. In what sense is a driver's license better identification than a permanent resident pensionado visa?

Do you think she was confused? Or perhaps she didn't recognize a pensionado carnet?

    " she didn't recognize a pensionado carnet "

  9. Varela Addresses National Assembly

President Juan Carlos Varela, during his state of the nation speech before the National Assembly, asked the judges of the Supreme Court of Justice and officials of the court not to tarnish the image of the justice system by giving favorable treatment to criminals who threaten the country's image and even "threaten our own lives."

Varela appeared Friday before the plenary of the National Assembly to present his report to the nation on the occasion of the two year anniversary of entering office.

At the meeting, Deputy León Rubén PRD was re-elected as president of the Assembly.

    REQUESTS

At another point in the speech, the president asked his ministers to communicate the achievements of his administration.

In addition, he emphasized that efforts will be made to finish promised works.

"We need to continue to strengthen the institutions of the country, but we must speed up projects for the Panamanian people," he said.

At another point in his speech, Varela told the deputies that he remains willing to work with all of the to complete "a vision of the state."

Varela also stressed that politicians should avoid contact with people who seek to lead the country in a wrong direction.

"I have to share with you my concern, because during the last few months we have seen members of the political class and people close to them in very delicate situations," he said.

On the other hand, the president expressed to local authorities, district representatives and mayors that he will make funds available to them to improve their communities, but they must be spent in a transparent manner.

He also highlighted achievements in housing, education and health care.

Varela speech marks two-year anniversary of his administration

He warned politicians to be careful of their associates

El presidente Juan Carlos Varela rindió su informe a la Nación ante la Asamblea Nacional.

Speaking Friday to the nation after serving two years in office, President Juan Carlos Varela warned the country's politicians to be careful of who they listened to when making decisions about the future of the country.

"Politicians need to avoid contact with people who can lead the country in the wrong direction," he said.

"We have seen members of the political class and people close to them in very delicate situations," said the president.

While he did not provide details, he may have been referring to a 2015 incident in which people closely linked to PRD Deputy Alfredo Pérez and CD Deputy Juan Poveda were arrested for drug trafficking.

Varela gave his speech shortly after the National Assembly voted to re-elect Deputy Ruben de Leon as president of the legislature. De Leon heads a coalition of deputies from the Panameñista, PRD, Molirena and CD parties that supports the president.

In his speech, Varela lashed out at the judiciary for making decisions that he felt were contrary to the proper administration of justice.

He said that judges had released "dangerous criminals who threaten the country's image and the lives of its citizens."

He urged the judges to use the power given to them by the constitution "so that justice is done."

  10. VivaColombia to begin Cali flights

Panama has added another flight to Colombia.

On Sept. 5, VivaColombia, a low-cost airline, will begin flights between Panama and Cali, its third route between the two countries. It already offers flights to Medellin and Bogota.

The company began operations in Panama in August 2014 and expects to have three weekly flights to the new destination. It flies out of the former Howard Air Force Base.

Juan Emilio Posada, president of VivaColombia, said that while an increase in the department tax from $15 to $34 has impacted fares, the airline still expects to grow in Panama.
