The Minister of Health presented his resignation today amid what now appears to be a national health crisis.

Let's hope President Varela has a competent replacement waiting in the wings.

    Varela names new cabinet members

Miguel Mayo and Enrique Carles will be the new ministers of Health and Agricultural Development, respectively, President Juan Carlos Varela announced Wednesday.

They will replace Minister of Health Francisco Javier Terrientes and Minister of Agricultural Development Jorge Arango, who both have resigned.

Terrientes resigned for professional reasons. Today is his last day in office.

Arango's resignation will be effective July 1. Varela said he will seek to appoint him to another position as he is one of the most respected producers in the agricultural industry.

  2. U.S. grants license to Felix B. Maduro

    It is valid until December.

Twelve days after Abdul Waked, owner of Felix B. Maduro, authorized the transfer of all the store's assets to a trust, the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the U.S. Treasury Department approved an extended license for these stores so that they have access to the US financial system.

The license is valid until Dec. 14, 2016 and will allow it to process credit card transactions and engage in business with U.S. suppliers, among other provisions.

Tuesday, President Juan Carlos Varela visited the Felix B. Maduro store on Vía España to give employees the news personally.

"I want to share with you the joy that I have that we have saved Felix B. Maduro," the president said.

Varela first made the announcement during a tour of the Amador Convention Center site. He cited the hard work of Economy Minister Dulcidio De La Guardia, Labor Minister Luis Ernesto Carles and Trade Minister Augusto Arosemena.

"They have worked 30 days on this topic, and have saved the jobs of 1,200 Panamanians," said the president.

The license allows the stores to be sold before December, though if the transaction involves U.S. citizens or companies, it must be authorized by the OFAC.

On May 5, the US Treasury Department included Abdul Waked, his nephew Nidal Waked, seven members of that family, and 68 companies, which included Felix B. Maduro, on the so-called Clinton List due to allegations that the entities were engaged in money laundering.

  3. Possibly boring but it's good to know that we're living in an economically stable country.

The reports by the World Bank which foresee increasing urbanization in the region jive with the growth we see in Panama City, Santiago, and David.

What's discouraging is the continued financial oppression of the lowest classes.

  4. Marie, your points are well taken. The IMF says prospects for continued economic growth look rosy in Panama but people are still hurting at the lower end of the food chain all over Latin America.

    Poverty threatens region

Some 30 million people in the region are considered to be vulnerable.

One of every three people in the region who emerged from poverty more than one decade ago is in danger of returning to th at condition, according to a report from theUnited Nations Program for Development.

The document refers to 30 million people in the region, considered "ultra vulnerable" because they came out of poverty but they did not reach economic levels of the middle class.

This group would not be prepared to resist the effects of a financial crisis or a natural disaster.

U.N. Regional Director Jessica Faitea explained that, to prevent this setback, it is important to begin to protect the gains achieved in recent years.

For this, she suggested promoting comprehensive, and inclusive policies to support populations that suffer discrimination, such as women, people of African descent and homosexuals.

Minister of Social Development Alcibiades Vásquez acknowledged that Panama does not escape from this reality, so the government is seeking to reduce the informal economy and implement better educational programs.

  5. Recent Twitter communications between ex-Presidents Ricardo Martinelli and Ernesto Pérez Balladares regarding control of the National Assembly have concerned some people.

Former President Ernesto Pérez Balladares, known as El Toro or The Bull, has a residence in Boquete.

Perhaps Roger could comment on this topic.

    Former presidents exchange twitter messages

Former presidents Ernesto Pérez Balladares and Ricardo Martinelli exchanged several messages on Twitter yesterday, after PRD deputy Elias Castillo denounced both before the National Assembly.

Martinelli said that the country lacked "justice and due process" while Perez Balladares said "if the capacity for dialogue is lost, bullets talk."

The remarks of Castillo were made about the upcoming legislative election on July 1.

  6. In Panama there are often events which seem stranger than fiction, unless it's a Keystone Cops remake.

After a Bank robbery in a section of Panama City this morning, suspects were pursued and caught.

During the arrest, the stolen loot got scattered on the street and before it could be recovered, the wind picked up and blew it in the direction of eager onlookers.

  7. President Varela announced today in David that the government has ordered 1,500,000 vaccinations against the H1N1 strain of influenza. He would like to see everyone protected.

Currently 541 people have been hospitalized, 57 of whom remain in intensive care. Seven men and five women have died to date from H1N1.

Las nuevas vacunas llegarán dentro de semana y media.

  8. There are a number of reports on Twitter that a gang-related hit in the El Sapo area of David this afternoon went wrong and the 5 year old daughter of the intended victim was killed. Maricelin Martinez RIP

The Ministry has allowed the media to publish the name of the suspected killer who is being sought, a certain "Juan Frito" of the "Kelly Difrock" gang.

Well let me contribute to the news then.  On Sat, June 4, someone (s) walked into my house when I was home and stole my wedding ring, my Kindle Fire, and my husband's passport (all reported, de-activated, and cancelled). A quick, silent snatch and grab.  I had left the gate unlocked (which I never do, but it was for the gardener who was supposed to be on his way).  The gardener was sick, however, and never showed up, but the robber did sometime later.  I am just grateful it was the snatch and grab guys and not the guns and knives guys.  I'm also grateful I had my own passport in my purse, so it wasn't stolen.

" The gardener was sick, however, and never showed up, but the robber did sometime later. "

    An interesting coincidence.

  10. Museo del Café in Boquete

The Panama Tourism Authority (ATP), is in the process of promoting the museography of coffee or the Coffee Museum, the same will be located on the top floor of the Interpretation Center and tourist facilities (Cefati), in Boquete, Chiriqui province, in order to promote various projects of tourist interest in the interior of the country.

According to the ATP, the objective to prepare a Museum of coffee in a space of the Cefati of Boquete, is so that people who visit the place to know about the history of coffee, their varieties and the integration of this product with the culture in this province.

It also stresses that the location of the Cefati is perfect for this draft, since it allows you to highlight the work of the coffee growers, in addition to incorporating the rural tourism as an economic alternative, by means of excursions toward the existing farms in this place.

The entity convenes again businesses to participate of this act of public tender, whose specifications and spreads of charge can be obtained in the portal of Panama purchases, since the first act of tender convened by the ATP to implement this work was declared void.

The undertakings concerned, whether natural or legal, must have proven experience in this type of project and submit a design of the same.

The ATP has fixed until the 10:00 a.m, of 20 June, to receive the proposals, in their main facilities in the building Bicsa, Financial Center, on Avenida Balboa, on the 29th floor, Purchasing Department. Before this date, you can deliver the documentation relating, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m, office hours.

It should be noted that the production of coffee in Chiriqui is an activity that due to the very special varieties that are grown has managed to obtain international recognition to occupy the first places between which it emphasizes the Coffee Geisha Jaramillo and Geisha Jumix, which this year in the Nineteenth tasting of COFFEES were awarded first place.

In the neighboring country of Colombia for example the implementation of museums of coffee has been of great success for strengthening tourism, in addition to enhancing the production and quality of this product.

  11. The cost of fuel is going up this Friday. The National Secretariat of Energy adjusts prices every two weeks based on import costs and reserves.

This table shows how fuel prices have fluctuated in Panama City over the last six months.

They also increase incrementally according to distance from the storage facility beside the Canal so we pay a few pennies more up here near the end of the line.

  12. VP travels to Tolé

She is also expected to discuss the plant with residents of that community.
