  1. Update from ARF: The puppies we have are getting bigger - and fast! They are only about 4 months old now, but they will be big dogs. They are all fixed and have had all the necessary shots. Their siblings have already been adopted, and these precious faces are still seeking their forever home. If you have the room, it will be filled with love by adopting Mango or Yello. ARF is a small non-profit animal organization dedicated to the rescue, care, foster and adoption of the unwanted and neglected animals in Boquete and the surrounding areas. Please visit our website at http://www.arf-boquete.com/ if you are interested in adopting an animal. 4. In 2017 resolve to be a BVB supporter! Is this email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser. BVB Families Receive High-Nutrition Food (And YOU can help!) A few years ago the BVB team met with a dietician to assess the nutritional value of the food we distribute. Our clients are very poor and most do not have electricity, so the food needs to be not only highly nutritious but also non-perishable. We have also learned that the food we provide must be something they will eat; when we introduce new food items we must often make suggestions on ways to make it more familiar and acceptable to family members. Our items include KLIM, a fortified dry milk that was developed for use by soldiers in jungle climates. We provide rice and two varieties of dried beans that provide protein when eaten together. Other protein sources are canned fish, sardines, and canned meat. Also included are food staples like flour, salt, pasta, crema and cooking oil. Recently our clients have been receiving a vitamin enriched and fortified rice and soy product called MannaPack. We are so grateful for this generous and special addition to our provision, courtesy of Philip McGuigan’s charity Amigos de Boquete Foundation. You, too, can help us nourish BVB families! Stop by Romero Super Mercado between 9 am and 1 pm on Saturday July 15th to support the BVB Food Drive as we gather specific non-perishable food items or cash donations. Check out the photo below to see what a family receives each month. BVB volunteers will be in front of the store to greet you and answer any of your questions. Family of the Month Buenos Vecinos de Boquete provides non-perishable food on a monthly basis to over 100 families and individuals. Included in that count are 58 clients who additionally receive the services of the Handicapped Foundation (Fundacion Pro Integracion). Pictured here (in blue) is Elibia during a home visit by FPI volunteer Loesje. Elibia was born with autism, cerebral palsy and a seizure disorder. She is now 16, and lives with her mother, several siblings and an extended family. Her father is deceased. The food provided by Buenos Vecinos de Boquete (BVB) takes some of the financial pressure off Elibia's family, who are obviously burdened with the care of this young woman. This food is also nutritionally valuable to the family, particularly with many children to feed. Fundacion Pro Integracion (FPI) steps in with physical therapy, necessary medical transportation, and assistance with medicine. Together our two organizations address critical needs of some of the community's most needy members. We hope you will decide to support our efforts. If you would like to help families like this and the efforts of Buenos Vecinos de Boquete, your financial support would be most appreciated.DONATE ONLINE: http://www.buenosvecinosdeboquete.com/how-you-can-help We use PayPal for easy and secure transactions. IF YOU PREFER TO DONATE BY CASH, Please contact Louise Orr (panamaleo@gmail.com) for arrangements. When you make that important decision to help feed the less fortunate in our community, you have truly become a “good neighbor”. When you donate $360 a year or $30 a month (about the cost of a daily latte), your name will be added to our “Coconut Foundation” as an acknowledgement of your concern and generosity. Buenos Vecinos de Boquete’s wholesale purchase power enables us to furnish our clients more food than they could purchase on their own in the store with the same amount of money. Like and Share our BVB Face Book Page Learn more and see additional photos at our Face Book page Buenos Vecinos de Boquete. Please Like our page and Share the contents with your friends and families. Thank You! -Mike and Heidi at Mike's Global Grill for sponsoring a BVB Restaurant Program in May. We hoped to "milk" some donations of KLIM and were successful. -Generous donors Steve Kingshott, Bill McGraw and Gladys Moreno -Chris and Justin at Big Daddy's for sponsoring the June BVB Restaurant Program. We went "fishing" for food donations and were not disappointed. -Nancy and Nairn at N&N Catering who, with the help of Chris and Justin at Big Daddy's, created another benefit to support local charities. -Susie Brymer urged her friends to donate to their favorite charities in lieu of birthday gifts for her, and BVB was included. -Germaine and Richard Sturtz organized and conducted a garage sale whose proceeds went to BVB. The Boquete multi-charity benefit event's new date and details will be announced soon and BVB will be an enthusiastic participant! Copyright © 2017 Buenos Vecinos, All rights reserved. 9. Alto al Crimen will have a table at the Tuesday market on July 11 and will have a table in Los Establos Plaze on Thursday and Friday, 13 and 14 July. Our partnership with Hospital Cooperativo offers you very low cost medical care from a 30 year old hospital which operates on a completely non-profit basis. The plan is more fully described in another post which you should find in the early pages of this forum. Cost is $150 per year for individuals or the first person in a household and $125 per year for additional persons in the same household. Since the current enrollment period is mid-year, charges will be for 18 months, and the respective costs will be $225 and $188 for membership until January 1, 2019. To enroll, come to our table on one of the dates shown above. Bring copies of cedula (preferred) or residency ID card or passport for each person to be covered. There is a separate contract for each person. The cost includes AAC emergency bilingual Hotline service so that, without speaking Spanish, you can call for police, fire or medical emergencies or other emergencies. Payment may be made by cash or check. If the check is on a foreign bank in the US, Canada or elsewhere, there will be a delay of about three weeks in completing your enrollment process. After July 14, all contracts will be delivered to Hospital Cooperativo, and wallet-size ID cards will be prepared. Alto al Crimen will publish an announcement about arrangements to pick up the ID cards. There is no age limit, no precondition exception and no waiting period for this plan. There are other medical discount and insurance plans available at much higher cost, often with large deductibles. For some people it is a very good option to put the money charged for those plans in the bank every year (in your own private "medical savings account") and use this plan for routine medical needs. If an expensive operation or other medical care is needed, there will be money in the savings account to pay for them.
  10. With the increasing numbers of audio podcasts that are published on the Chiriqui.Life (CL) website, some visitors at CL tell us that they have difficulty finding the podcast that they are interested in. There typically are two main reasons behind their difficulty. The most common reason is that in order to see the postings about the audio podcasts you must be a registered member of CL, and logged in. Easily the largest percentage of the inquiries that CL management receives is because the person is not a registered CL member. That issue is easily fixed by registering on CL, which is free. Simply click on the "Sign Up" icon in the upper right corner of the home page, and after completing a few questions, then your registration will be reviewed, and then you will receive an email confirming your registration. Again, there is no cost involved in using CL. The second most common reason is that people sometimes have difficulty locating the content of interest. The software application used for CL is very sophisticated. And there is a LOT of content, literally thousands of topics and many more thousands of replies. CL uses a "community bulletin board" structure (as opposed to a blog structure) to organize its content. The bulletin board approach means simply that content is put into folders (forums) within categories based on the subject matter. [The blog approach basically is a dart board in which everything goes into one bucket and gets "pushed down" onto a stack as new content is posted.] Because of the high interest in the audio podcasts on CL, the management has tried to make the audio podcasts more accessible (more visible). At the very top of the CL homepage are four pinned and highlighted topics. The fourth of those pinned and highlighted topics is an index of all of the audio podcasts that have been published on CL. For your convenience, below is the current index of all audio podcasts that have been published on CL as of this date. But again, remember, the below hotlinks will only work for registered members of CL. Non-members will get an error message to the effect that they do not have permission to view the desired content. If you need more help using CL, please send an email to support@chiriqui.life. 11. The Benefits of an Ozone Sauna Way back in 1999, the foremost clinical ozone researcher in the world, Dr. Velio Bocci, published an article that looked at the effects of combining the benefits of a sauna with those of ozone. He measured how much oxygen and carbon dioxide was in the participant’s blood and the blood levels of their TBARS. TBARS stand for thiobarbituric acid reactive substances. TBARS are formed as a byproduct of special molecules called peroxides. By measuring TBARS, you can get an idea of how many peroxides are in the blood. The higher the levels of TBARS in the blood, the higher the levels of peroxides. The carbon dioxide levels were reduced in the ozone/oxygen sessions. All of this is critical because ozone works its miracles by generating increased levels of peroxide. The fact that the TBARS were so high after the ozone sessions indicated that the sauna was having the same sort of powerful systemic affect that we see in intravenous ozone therapy. And that’s particularly great because sauna therapy does not require any needles and veins. An ozone sauna can produce systemic levels of peroxide which gives it the capability of treating every single condition. A long list which includes: cardiovascular disease, chronic viral infections, macular degeneration, acute viral infections, colitis, cancer, diabetes, toxicity, fatigue states, and even aging. 12. The owners/administrators of the Chiriqui.Life (CL) website are very pleased to announce the release of its sixth audio podcast in the series that is called "Chiriqui.Life Podcasts". These podcasts are produced by Marcelyn Jandreau and Bud Huber, and basically are conversations with the "movers and shakers" in the Chiriqui highlands area. (Note: Chiriqui.Life Podcasts is a different series from the "Chiriqui.Life Stories" audio podcasts that are produced by Michael Schwartz and also published on CL.) This audio podcast features Lloyd Cripe. Lloyd, along with his wife of almost 55 years Sandra, is a long term resident in the Palmira area of the Boquete District. He is better known as Boquete's Mr. Weatherman, which is a non-commercial community service that he provides. We learn that Lloyd is a retired Vietnam-era veteran, having served in the US Army as a helicopter pilot. We also learn that he is a doctor in clinical psychology. Lloyd has widely varying interests, including photography, astronomy, meteorology, bird photography, etc., all while operating a coffee finca. Lloyd obviously is not letting the dust collect under his shoes. Podcasts are premium content on CL, which means that you need to be a registered member of CL and logged in. Membership on CL is free, so if you are not already a member, then register and listen to Lloyd tell his story. 13. A new group formed by our Alcalde, Junta de Festivos y Desarrollo Integral de Boquete, is sponsoring a fiesta in honor of Panama's Día de los Niños on Sunday, July 16th for all children in the Boquere area. The event will take place in Central Park from 10AM-3PM with lots of activities for the children--face painting, clowns, games, & refreshments. As you know many of these children are from very poor families. We would like to make it possible through public donations, for each child to receive a small toy of his or her own at the event. We will have a table at the Tuesday Market on July 11th to accept your donations of toys or cash. See you on Tuesday! Thank you, Nan Landsman landsman.nan@gmail.com 6553-1928
  14. 10:30 in the BCP Theater Tuesday, July 11 – Our local mad scientist, Mike Petersen presents “THE WONDERFUL, WILD, WACKY, WEIRD WORLD OF QUANTUM THEORY”. Richard Feynman, one of the world's eminent particle physicists, once said that if someone says they understand quantum theory, then they don't understand quantum theory. Well, Mike respectfully disagrees. If you've ever wondered what all the hoopla was about (the double slit experiment, Schroedinger's Cat, quantum entanglement, etc.), then this talk is for you. Mike will explain how the whole thing works, and do so without math. You'll leave this talk more informed about the strange realm of the quantums. Like science? This one's for you. Tuesday, July 18 -- DEPRESSIVE ILLNESS is a common and serious human malady: what it is, what causes it, and it's medication and cognitive therapy treatment from the perspective of a (retired) psychiatrist. Dr. Dean Hoover, a Boquete resident, received his Medical Doctor degree from the University of Miami and then served as a USN Medical Officer for eight years including three years of Psychiatric Residency training. In 1983, he left the Navy and engaged in the practice private of Psychiatry in Annapolis, MD, until retiring in 2012. He and his wife have lived in the Boquete area for over four years. Tuesday, July 25 – Irma Castillo Smith from Keep It Simple Panama (medical advocacy and assistance) will talk about the things you need to know when faced with emergency or elective hospitalization in David. Irma’s service provides bilingual solutions to all types of requirements in Chiriqui. Fom the most basic domestic needs to advice on acquiring important products such as life and health insurance, migratory visas, accounting. Ect. www.keepitsimplepanama.com Aseguradora La Floresta (new insurance company in town) will introduce us to their products including those products for folks over 64. www.seguroslafloresta.com/ Tuesday, August 1 – ARF and other charities Tuesday, August 8 – Chef Juan Linares speaks on Market Cooking in Chiriqui. Learn to use local produce. What to do with plantains, chayotes, papayas, etc.? What are the beef cuts in Panama and how to cook them? Eat fresher, better, and cheaper. There will be tastings. Tuesday, August 15 -- Benefits the V.A. Doesn’t Tell Vets About. Shameful as it is, the V.A. does not tell veterans, or the widows of veterans, about benefits which are much needed, especially as we age! The V.A. website even misleads you about whether you can qualify! J.R. gave a wonderful talk in early June for those with service-connected disabilities. Betsy Barbeau will now provide all veterans and widows of veterans who served during any recognized war with information about a V.A. benefit that is awarded for ailments, infirmities, and/or disabilities that are or are not service-connected! If you are 65 or older, you could qualify. If you are under 65 and on Social Security Disability, you could qualify. For widows there is no age restriction. Come hear about what they are not telling you! Tuesday, August 22 Tuesday, August 29 – Hospice presents “Being Prepared”. Tuesday, September 5 – Magda Crespo, local insurance expert will talk to us be about how to use our medical plans in Panama, and the differences of how insurance is handled in Panama. She will speak on deductibles, co- payments and so on. And she will address the fact that our doctors do give us the "gringo price" and how to avoid it. Tuesday, September 12 – Dr. Maria Ruiz will speak on the history of coffee in Boquete in general and the history of the Ruiz family in particular. Cafe Ruiz is one of the largest producers of coffee in Panama. Maria will explain how coffee production started in Boquete, what's the picture for coffee right now and what she projects for the future. Dr. Maria Ruiz has more than 30 years of experience working in the Panamanian coffee industry, including growing, green processing, roasting, tasting, and product development. She has participated in many activities at a national level as a representative of the private sector. She has also represented Panama in international forums such as the Specialty Coffee Association of America, Specialty Coffee Association of Japan, and the Specialty Coffee Association of Europe. Currently she is the CEO of special projects with Casa Ruiz, S.A., in Boquete, Panama. Tuesday, Sept 19 – Oct 3 – Vacation for Tuesday Talks Tuesday, October 10 – Dr. Jennifer Daniels will speak on home remedies that work and potions you can mix at home to maintain your independence and why you should want to. Dr Daniels is a long-time resident of Panama and was trained in the US as a Board Certified Family Medicine Physician. During her 10 years of medical practice she quickly realized people would be better off staying home than submitting to medical intervention. Dr Daniels then applied herself to developing home remedies that are safer and more effective than the drugs she had been trained to recommend in medical school. Dr Daniels will share many of these healing potions during this presentation. To suggest a speaker or topic for these meetings please email BCP Tuesday Meeting To become a vendor at the Tuesday market, Facility Manger

  16. Our weekly matinee films start at 1pm at The Fènix Cafe - which is a restaurant, so please, don't bring outside food and drinks to the event. Rather, support our film series by patronizing the Cafe, and be sure to say hello to Joy Alexander, the owner of the Fénix Cafe, and Ana, her helper. Breakfast, lunch, popcorn and desserts - as well as coffee, espresso drinks, herbal teas, lemonade, beer, wine and mixed drinks - will be available for purchase. Early birds get the comfy sofas, but if you like, you can bring cushions for the hard restaurant chairs, or folding/camp chairs for more comfort. There is no admission charge, but we ask for voluntary donations to support the program and pay for the big-screen LED-TV, and then to update the sound system. ----------------------------------------------- This week's film: Departures (2008 - Japan) Drama, Music - 130 minutes, Rated PG. Won the 2009 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Best Film in Japan, and many other awards around the world. Ratings: IMDB 8/10, Roger Ebert 4/4, Rotten Tomatoes 81% From IMDB: Daigo Kobayashi is a devoted cellist in an orchestra that has just been dissolved and now finds himself without a job. Daigo decides to move back to his old hometown with his wife to look for work and start over. He answers a classified ad entitled "Departures" thinking it is an advertisement for a travel agency only to discover that the job is actually for a "Nokanshi" or "encoffineer," a funeral professional who prepares deceased bodies for burial and entry into the next life. While his wife and others despise the job, Daigo takes a certain pride in his work and begins to perfect the art of "Nokanshi," acting as a gentle gatekeeper between life and death, between the departed and the family of the departed. The film follows his profound and sometimes comical journey with death as he uncovers the wonder, joy and meaning of life and living. Link to trailer

This is a different but similar formula as the one I use in making "GRUBERS JUNGLE OIL." This oil though effective was heavy and costly to transport. This tincture reconstituted instantly from cotton pads, in water or alcohol, works even faster and is vary economic to ship. 2,000 dollars of it occupies vary little space weighing only several ounces. At this time these pads are made at an Arts & Crafts production level and intended to give work primarily to Back Packers having difficulty paying lodging and travel expenses. Back Packers are among the most attacked by Vicious Bugs and when they recommend this product is because IT WORKS! This is not so much about making large amounts of money but rather serving the most needy. I am classified by the Panamanian Government in the field of Arts & Crafts of Consumption since 1997. I follow in the footsteps of my mother Diana Chiari de Gruber who founded the Arts and Crafts School that now bears her name in La Arena de Chitre, Republic of Panama. She earned Panama´s Presidential Award for Prospering the Humble Classes, Medallum Belisario Porras. She was fond of saying: “ there is no such thing as a sad arts and crafts person. While they make their product they forget their problems and when they sell the products they SOLVE THEIR PROBLEMS!” My goal in Panama and later the World is to establish Arts and Crafts Schools in most rural communities and help them market their creations internationally. While you are in the Tropics appreciate you purchasing from me or my World Distributors samples of Gruber´s Topical Antidote. I am sure you will LOVE IT! To become a WORLD DISTRIBUTOR please write Master Herbalist Franklin Gruber Chiari at botanicofranklingruber@hotmail.com or naturistachiari@gmail.com or botanicogruber@hotmail.com Thank You for your interest in this incredibly fascinating product! 23. Julian This pup is about 4-5 months old and was dumped by his owner on the side of the road near Wilson Bridge and left to die. One of our volunteers was driving by and saw this all pan out and stopped to speak with the man to find out what was going on. He did not care. The dog was sick and he had no interest in helping it. Julian was immediately taken to a vet and given an examination, vitamin shots and placed with La Casa de los Animales for recovery. He had a test done for Distemper and the results were negative but Julian is, however, exhibiting slight symptoms of Distemper, so he will be re-tested in one week. Distemper is a viral disease, which affects the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and central nervous systems in dogs. The canine distemper virus (CDV) causes the disease. It is highly contagious to other dogs, and is often fatal. Dogs between the ages of 3 and 6 months are most susceptible. The only way to prevent this disease is to have your animal protected by vaccination. The good news is that he has a very healthy appetite. One of the initial symptoms of Distemper is lack of appetite and also a fever – which he also does not have, so we are crossing our fingers for this little one. We are in the process of gathering information on the “owner” of this dog and will determine the next necessary steps. If you would like to help with the expenses for Julian or any of the other animals we have to provide for (currently 28 dogs and 8 cats), please visit our website at http://www.arf-boquete.com/donate.html. No amount is too small. Thank you.
