  8. Starting In August, the Fènix Cafe will be closed on Sundays, and the Sunday Movie Matinee will transition to the Monday Movie Matinee - keeping the start time of 1pm (not 3pm as was stated in the last movie announcement.) Here is our August Schedule of films: Monday, August 7 - Still Mine (Canada - 2012) Monday, August 14 - Under the Tuscan Sun (USA / Italy - 2003) Monday, August 21 - Garden of the Finzi-Continis (Italy - 1970) SyFi Friday, August 25 - Blade Runner (USA - 1982) Monday, August 28 - lxcanul (Guatamala - 2016) We premiered our monthly "Science Fiction Friday" Film Series yesterday (Friday) with a screening of Fritz Lang's 1927 German epic silent film "Metropolis" - a true classic and a pioneer in the genre. Like our Sunday films , we will select intelligent and often thought provoking science fiction films. The next SyFi Friday Film (August 25) will be the director's cut of Blade Runner, a 1982 American neo-noir science fiction film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, and Edward James Olmos. ----------------------------------------------- This week's film - our last Sunday screening before moving to Mondays: Mother of George (2013 - USA/NYC Nigerian immigrant community) - Drama - 1 hr, 47 min., Rated R I watched this film a couple of years ago at home, and really enjoyed it, as I have enjoyed many other well made films that give us a look at life in other cultures - this one right in the middle of the most populous city in the U.S. Although integrated into their Brooklyn neighborhood, these Nigerian families retain a lot of their home country's culture, including their extraordinarily colorful clothes. From Wikipedia: Mother of George is a 2013 Nigerian [immigrant community] drama film directed by Andrew Dosunmu and tells the story of a newly married couple in Brooklyn who own and manage a small restaurant while struggling with fertility issues. The film opens with the wedding of a Nigerian couple, Ayodele (Issach de Bankolé) and Adenike (Danai Gurira) Balogen. Adenike is given fertility beads by her mother-in-law, Ma Ayo (Bukky Ajayi) and although the couple make love on their first night of marriage, Adenike struggles to become pregnant. Despite drinking a tea that is supposed to help with fertility, Adenike is still unable to conceive and faces growing pressure from Ma Ayo. A visit to the doctor reveals that Adenike can receive help on the issue, but Ayodele refuses to cooperate. Mother of George premièred in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Cinematographer Bradford Young won Sundance 2013's Cinematography Award. The film received critical acclaim. It currently holds a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 40 reviews, with an average rating of 7.1 out of 10. The site consensus states "Director Andrew Dosunmu's style takes some getting used to, but Mother of George compensates with powerful acting, a thoughtful script, and gorgeous visuals." It has been praised for its excellent camera work, setting, and plot. Link to trailer

  13. This Friday at 5pm is the premiere event of the Boquete Film Club's new "Friday Evening Science Fiction Film Series' at the Fènix Cafe in the BCP Center Hex Room." Our venue is the Fènix Cafe - which is a restaurant. So please, don't bring outside food and drinks to the event, but rather, support our film series by patronizing the Cafe. The Cafe will will be serving light entrees, fresh popped popcorn, and desserts. Coffee, espresso drinks, herbal teas, lemonade, beer, wine and mixed drinks - will also be available for purchase. Early birds get the comfy sofas, but if you like, you can bring cushions for the hard restaurant chairs, or folding/camp chairs for more comfort. There is no admission charge, but we do collect donations to support the program and pay for the audio/video equipment and contribute to maintaining this wonderful facility. ----------------------------------------------- This week's film: Metropolis (1927 - Germany) In my opinion, this film is he first great science fiction movie ever made - a restored silent film from what many of us think of as the "Art Deco" period that includes recently discovered "lost" footage. I can't think of a better way to start our new monthly film series, which will focus on "science fiction for thinking people." This excellent classic film is quite long at 2hrs, 28 minutes, and there will be an intermission about half-way through the screening. From Wikipedia (edited): Metropolis is a 1927 German expressionist epic science-fiction drama film directed by Fritz Lang. He and his wife, Thea von Harbou, wrote the silent film, which starred Gustav Fröhlich, Brigitte Helm, Alfred Abel and Rudolf Klein-Rogge... It is regarded as a pioneering work of the science-fiction genre in movies, being among the first feature-length movies of the genre. Made in Germany during the Weimar Period, Metropolis is set in a futuristic urban dystopia and follows the attempts of Freder, the wealthy son of the city's ruler, and Maria, a poor worker, to overcome the vast gulf separating the classes of their city. Filming took place in 1925. The art direction draws influence from Bauhaus, Cubist and Futurist design. From "Empire Online": The son of the Master Of Metropolis falls for an angelic social worker, while a metal-armed mad scientist creates a gleaming, seductive, female robot to infiltrate the revolutionary movement. Shortly after its German premiere in 1927, Fritz Lang’s sci-fi classic was cut by a quarter; the longer version was thought lost, but miraculously turned up in an Argentine film two years ago. Astonishingly, the scissor-men didn’t just trim dull scenes — this restores actual plot material (the story makes sense, which it hasn’t for decades), fleshes out many of the characters and adds heroic saving-the-orphans-from-the-flood action beats which makes for a more exciting, satisfying finish. The restored footage is in rougher shape than the rest of the film, which looks so pristine it’s a discovery in itself — and it remains one of the cinema’s most visually amazing films: the 2001, the Blade Runner, the Avatar of its day. The newly restored footage enhances sci-fi's first masterpiece, making this essential viewing for any movie lover. Link to trailer

  15. If you recently joined the Hospital Cooperativo medical discount plan sponsored by Alto al Crimen, your wallet ID cards are now available. Come to the Tuesday Market tomorrow, July 25, and look for Bob Gregory walking around looking stupid with a sign hanging around his neck. The sign will say "MED PLAN CARDS." We also have a few cards that people have not yet picked up from the previous enrollment period. You may not have been sick, and thus have not needed them, but don't push your luck. Once you have your card(s) it is a good idea to make an appointment with a doctor of internal medicine at the hospital. Get acquainted with the doctor, have him open a record file for you, maybe have a general physical exam and share your medical history. Then, if you later have an illness or need to go to the hospital in an emergency, you will have a local file with information that could be very helpful. Write the doctor's name on the back of your ID card. Also remember that in the event of a visit to the emergency room and you need assistance with translation, you can call the AAC Hotline (6477-6662 or 6917-0011) and ask Franc Lugo to help you. If you do not make it to the market this week, the cards will also be available there next week (August 1)/ Thereafter, send an email to usn11958@gmail.com to coordinate pickup. Otherwise, I'll nail them to a tree in the Amistad National Forest for you.
  16. "According to Michael Thaut, director of Colorado State University's Center for Biomedical Research in Music, 'Rhythm cues can help retrain the brain after a stroke or other neurological impairment, as with Parkinson's patients ...' The more connections that can be made within the brain, the more integrated our experience becomes. The reason rhythm is such a powerful tool is that it permeates the entire brain. Vision for example is in one part of the brain, speech another, but drumming accesses the whole brain. The sound of drumming generates dynamic neuronal connections in all parts of the brain even where there is significant damage or impairment such as in Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)." The above is from an article by Michael Drake entitled "YOUR BRAIN ON DRUMS". Involving yourself in shared rhythm provides an amazing array of health benefits such as stress reduction, strengethened immune system and much more. These health benefits are most easily realized when you participate in group rhythmic exercises like community drum circles. In addition to the health benefits, it's simply loads of fun! Come join us at the therapeutic drum circles held at 4 PM every Wednesday at the Fènix Cafe in the BCP event center. No experience or "rhythm" required. We'll teach you what you need to know and you have more rhythmic ability than you know. And don't forget the Full Moon Drum Jam Parties at Fènix. Check at the cafe for dates and details. Mike Potts
