Breakfast, lunch, popcorn and desserts - as well as coffee, espresso drinks, herbal teas, beer, wine and mixed drinks - will be available for purchase. Upcoming films (we will send out details for each movie the week before the screening): July 2: Waking Ned Devine (Irish Comedy - (1998) ----------------------------------------------- Akira Kurosawa's Dreams (Japan - 1990) Rated PG (Because the language of the film is Japanese, the subtitles will be in English.) Regarded as one of the most important and influential filmmakers in the history of cinema, he directed 30 films in a career spanning 57 years. DREAMS s a 1990 Japanese-American magical realism film of eight vignettes written and directed by Akira Kurosawa. It was inspired by actual dreams that Kurosawa claimed to have had repeatedly. It was his first film in 45 years on which he was the sole author of the screenplay. It was made five years after Ran, with assistance from George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola, and Steven Spielberg, and funded by Warner Bros. David Van Harn Boquete Film Club Curator More From Wikipedia: "Dreams" is a collection of tales based upon the actual dreams of director Akira Kurosawa, Dreams is essentially eight separate short films. There are some overlaps in terms of characters and thematic material - chiefly that of man's relationship with his environment. 'Sunshine Through The Rain': a young boy is told not to go out on the day when both weather conditions occur, because that's when the foxes hold their wedding procession, which could have fatal consequences for those who witness it. 'The Peach Orchard': the same young boy encounters the spirits of the peach trees that have been cut down by heartless humans. 'The Blizzard': a team of mountaineers are saved from a blizzard by spiritual intervention. 'The Tunnel': a man encounters the ghosts of an army platoon, whose deaths he was responsible for. 6. His chain got caught in a barbed wire fence and Juan Rodriguez (also known by expats as JR because he speaks English) found him after he'd been there for a time. He's very docile and obviously misses his people. He is being kept inside and fed and watered at the Sta. Lucia neighborhood (just off Volcancito Road). If he's your "dear one," please call Juan at 6616-1664 (English and Spanish).
  7. Dear Boquete Neighbors, It is with great sadness that we share with you that Gabrielle and Patrick Reynolds, Artistic Directors for BCP, have made the difficult decision to return to the U.S for an indefinite period. Gabrielle is in need of two knee replacement surgeries, with lengthy physical therapy required after each – their hope is to return to Boquete sometime in 2018. Their loss will be felt throughout our community, and we wish them the best as they prepare to depart Boquete. Their loss, as difficult as it is for us, creates an opportunity for one or more talented individuals to step in and work with us to create more great theatrical productions. If you have directorial experience, we could use your talents for the production currently in rehearsal and scheduled for August presentations. Please let us know if you can help by Monday, June 26 by contacting Sheila Strunk at the email or phone number shown below. Other talent is always needed in many areas of the theater – whether on stage or behind the scenes. If you’d like to lend a hand, meet some new friends and gain a huge sense of satisfaction, please contact Sheila Strunk at shestrunk@gmail.com or (507) 6880-3059 Thank you from Boquete Community Playhouse (BCP)

  10. Welcome to the newsletter of Boquete Health and Hospice Is this email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser. A Message from Boquete Health and Hospice Administrator Bev Tyler As Administrator I am the contact person with the community for your immediate health needs. I carry the Boquete Health and Hospice phone and deal with any issues that come up. They include needs for equipment or help organizing care for people who are sick or dying. Often this involves a home visit to determine exactly what type of help is most needed. As a registered nurse (foreign) I oversee the care that our teams of volunteers give to make sure that the clients’ needs are being met. That includes both the person who is sick or dying and also their family and the people close to them. We have learned over the years what resources are available in the community and help link people with those resources. It is a big job but I love it. I meet interesting people who are so very grateful for what we do. I get to receive their gratitude when the reality is that we are a group of many volunteers all working hard to make sure that you and your loved ones have as good a quality of life as possible. How We Help IN A SPLIT SECOND, MY LIFE CHANGED Beginning a new life in Panama was filled with thoughts of tropical gardens to plant, glorious hikes and many new and exciting places to explore. In a split second, my fun-filled life changed last June when a ladder fell out from under me as I painted my kitchen. The doctors would diagnose me with a broken pelvis in both the front and back. To avoid surgery, I was required to lie on my back for 10 weeks, without putting any weight on my legs, and sitting for no more than 20 minutes at a time, only to eat. I have always been a very independent person, and felt so hopeless, having to suddenly depend on the help of others. Family in the States wanted to help, but could not leave their homes and jobs to take care of me, and I could not travel on an airplane to be near them. That is when a friend told me about Boquete Health and Hospice. I had not even thought of Hospice, because I was of the assumption it was for patients who were terminally ill. Boquete Health and Hospice is for many different levels of care. We came up with a plan based on my needs. The volunteers helped with housecleaning, laundry, animal care, meals, etc. They were like angels that came to my house and helped me through those miserable 10 weeks. Without their help, and the help of a couple dear friends, I don´t know how I would have endured that long period of time. I am currently in the states with damage to my spine from the same fall, and having spinal fusion surgery in two days. I will have a 12 week recuperation period much the same as before. I have often wished there was a group of volunteers I could contact as I did in Boquete. Had I been able to remain in Panama, I would have also become a Hospice Volunteer. I can think of no better way to make a difference in the Boquete community, and of helping people in need. By all means, if you are in need, please do not hesitate to call them for assistance. You will be relieved you did so. Holley Hayes The Vision and Mission Statements for Boquete Health and Hospice The vision statement for BHHF is: Supporting a Healthy Community Our mission is to inform and promote community health and to support people with needs by providing information, equipment, and services. As part of the mission to support a healthy community BHHF provides community information programs. On June 13, members of BHHF presented a program on falls prevention at the Tuesday Market. Merl Will-Wallace, Betty Landis and Laurie Collier were the speakers for the presentation. The following is a summary of the presentation: To reduce the risk of falling at home: Remove clutter and walk carefully when there are potential hazards like throw rugs and pets. Use a sturdy stool with hand rails to get something you cannot reach. Do not use towel bars, sink edge, etc. for support because they could come away from the wall. Use a night light in the bedroom and bathroom. Immediately wipe up spills on the floor and use rubber backed bathmats to prevent slipping. Wear sensible shoes (no flip flops, heels, etc.) Stay active to maintain overall strength, endurance, and balance. Know your limitations. If there is a task you cannot easily complete, do not risk a fall by trying it. Information provided by AOTA. Blood Pressure Monitoring Boquete Health and Hospice offers free Blood Pressure monitoring every Tuesday at the BCP Tuesday Market from 8:30 to 11:30 am. Stop by and let our retired professional nurses monitor your BP on a regular basis and try to answer your health questions. Save the Date! 14. Family of the month - June 2017 Meet Elibia and Her Family Buenos Vecinos de Boquete provides non-perishable food on a monthly basis to over 100 families and individuals. Included in that count are 58 clients who additionally receive the services of the Handicapped Foundation (Fundacion Pro Integracion). Pictured here (in blue) is Elibia during a home visit by FPI volunteer Loesje. Elibia was born with autism, cerebral palsy and a seizure disorder. She is now 16, and lives with her mother, several siblings and an extended family. Her father is deceased. The food provided by Buenos Vecinos de Boquete (BVB) takes some of the financial pressure off Elibia's family, who are obviously burdened with the care of this young woman. This food is also nutritionally valuable to the family, particularly with many children to feed. Fundacion Pro Integracion (FPI) steps in with physical therapy, necessary medical transportation, and assistance with medicine. Together our two organizations address critical needs of some of the community's most needy members. We hope you will decide to support our efforts. If you would like to help families like this and the efforts of Buenos Vecinos de Boquete, your financial support would be most appreciated. DONATE ONLINE: http://www.buenosvecinosdeboquete.com/how-you-can-help We use PayPal for easy and secure transactions. IF YOU PREFER TO DONATE BY CASH, Please contact Louise Orr (panamaleo@gmail.com) for arrangements. When you make that important decision to help feed the less fortunate in our community, you have truly become a “good neighbor”. When you donate $360 a year or $30 a month (about the cost of a daily latte), your name will be added to our “Coconut Foundation” as an acknowledgement of your concern and generosity. Buenos Vecinos de Boquete’s wholesale purchase power enables us to furnish our clients more food than they could purchase on their own in the store with the same amount of money. Thank you!
  15. Alto al Crimen will have a table at the Tuesday Maarket on June 20 for sign-ups for the Hospital Cooperative Discount Medical Plan. Hospital Cooperativo is the only cooperative medicine, non-profit hospital in Panama. It has served David and Chiriqui for over thirty years with good medical care at the lowest prices. Through membership in the discount plan, you can save 25% to 50% off the already low prices for hospital services, doctors' fees and prescription medications at the pharmacy You can find more detailed information about the plan and read an English translation of the simple contract in the Forum section of Boquete.ning.com. The words "Alto al Crimen" appear in the subject lines of the forum posts. They should all be on the first two or three pages of the Forum posts. Cost for the discount plan for one year are $150 for individuals or the first person in a household and $125 for other persons in the same household. For the mid-year enrollments between now and July 11, 2017, the fees will be $225 and $$188 respectively because they will include payments for membership until January 1, 2019. This will save both you and Alto al Crimen the hassle of re-enrollment in December 2017-January 2018 To enroll you will need to bring a clear, legible copy of the cedula, permanent residency card or passport (in that order of preference) for each individual to be enrolled. And you will need to complete a short, simple data form with name, address and contact information. Payment may be made in cash (Bring exact change if possible) or by check payable to FUNDACION ALTO AL CRIMEN. Checks on US banks will take about three weeks to clear and there will be a commensurate delay in issuance off wallet ID cards for the plan. If you are currently paying high medical insurance premiums and have a high deductible, you can stretch your deductible considerably through this plan. You could even decide to put the high premium into your own bank account every year as a savings account for high medical expenses and use the Hospital Cooperativo medical discount plan for routine and minor medical expenses. This could save you a lot of money. Watch for the Alto al Crimen table at the market this Tuesday. We'll process your enrollment and answer any questions you may have. Alto al Crimen is your non-profit public service foundation which provides a bi-lingual Hotline for police, fire, and medical emergencies. Our operator, Franc Lugo, will help you with such emergencies and can also assist with traffic stop translation, roadside emergencies, etc. Your membership in the discount medical plan also includes our hotline service at no additional charge. If you're not already registered with Alto al Crimen, you can register on our web site at altoalcrimen.info If you are not a member of the medical discount plan, you can make an annual donation for the Hotline service. AAC Hotline phone numbers are: 6477-6662 and 6917-0011 Alto al Crimen needs your donations and your volunteer support. You can help us to help you and the entire Boquete expat community.

Richard Feynman, one of the world's emminent particle physicists, once said that if someone says they understand quantum theory, then they don't understand quantum theory. Well, Mike respectfully disagrees. If you've ever wondered what all the hoopla was about (the double slit experiment, Schroedinger's Cat, quantum entanglement, etc.), then this talk is for you. Mike will explain how the whole thing works, and do so without math. You'll leave this talk more informed about the strange realm of the quantums. Like science? This one's for you. Tuesday, July 18 -- DEPRESSIVE ILLNESS is a common and serious human malady: what it is, what causes it, and it's medication and cognitive therapy treatment from the perspective of a (retired) psychiatrist. Dr. Dean Hoover, a Boquete resident, received his Medical Doctor degree from the University of Miami and then served as a USN Medical Officer for eight years including three years of Psychiatric Residency training. In 1983, he left the Navy and engaged in the practice private of Psychiatry in Annapolis, MD, until retiring in 2012. He and his wife have lived in the Boquete area for over four years. Tuesday, July 25 – Irma Castillo Smith from Keep It Simple Panama (medical advocacy and assistance) will talk about the things you need to know when faced with emergency or elective hospitalization in David. Aseguradora La Floresta (new insurance company in town) will introduce us to their products including those products for folks over 64. http://www.seguroslafloresta.com/ Tuesday, August 1 – ARF and other charities Tuesday, August 8 – Chef Juan Linares speaks on Market Cooking in Chiriqui. Learn to use local produce. What to do with plantains, chayotes, papayas, etc.? What are the beef cuts in Panama and how to cook them? Eat fresher, better, and cheaper. There will be tastings. Tuesday, August 15 -- Benefits the V.A. Doesn’t Tell Vets About. Shameful as it is, the V.A. does not tell veterans, or the widows of veterans, about benefits which are much needed, especially as we age! The V.A. website even misleads you about whether you can qualify! J.R. gave a wonderful talk in early June for those with service-connected disabilities. Betsy Barbeau will now provide all veterans and widows of veterans who served during any recognized war with information about a V.A. benefit that is awarded for ailments, infirmities, and/or disabilities that are or are not service-connected! If you are 65 or older, you could qualify. If you are under 65 and on Social Security Disability, you could qualify. For widows there is no age restriction. Come hear about what they are not telling you! To suggest a speaker or topic for these meetings please email BCP Tuesday Meeting To become a vendor at the Tuesday market, Facility Manger
