Tuesday, August 15 -- Benefits the V.A. Doesn’t Tell Vets About. Shameful as it is, the V.A. does not tell veterans, or the widows of veterans, about benefits which are much needed, especially as we age! The V.A. website even misleads you about whether you can qualify! J.R. gave a wonderful talk in early June for those with service-connected disabilities. Betsy Barbeau will now provide all veterans and widows of veterans who served during any recognized war with information about a V.A. benefit that is awarded for ailments, infirmities, and/or disabilities that are or are not service-connected! If you are 65 or older, you could qualify. If you are under 65 and on Social Security Disability, you could qualify. For widows there is no age restriction. Come hear about what they are not telling you! Tuesday, August 22 Tuesday, August 29 – Hospice presents “Being Prepared”. What do you want people to do with your stuff? Does anyone know how to reach your family back home? How would a friend or family access money to pay for you to be admitted to an emergency room, pay for an ambulance ride or worse yet, pay the morgue? Come to the Being Prepared presentation and start thinking about what you need to get your plans in order. It really does make life easier to have a plan. Tuesday, September 5 – Magda Crespo, local insurance expert will talk to us be about how to use our medical plans in Panama, and the differences of how insurance is handled in Panama. Tuesday, September 12 – Dr. Maria Ruiz will speak on the history of coffee in Boquete in general and the history of the Ruiz family in particular. Cafe Ruiz is one of the largest producers of coffee in Panama. Maria will explain how coffee production started in Boquete, what's the picture for coffee right now and what she projects for the future. Dr. Maria Ruiz has more than 30 years of experience working in the Panamanian coffee industry, including growing, green processing, roasting, tasting, and product development. She has participated in many activities at a national level as a representative of the private sector. She has also represented Panama in international forums such as the Specialty Coffee Association of America, Specialty Coffee Association of Japan, and the Specialty Coffee Association of Europe. During her 10 years of medical practice she quickly realized people would be better off staying home than submitting to medical intervention. Dr Daniels then applied herself to developing home remedies that are safer and more effective than the drugs she had been trained to recommend in medical school. Dr Daniels will share many of these healing potions during this presentation. Tuesday, October 17 – William Oates is a Boquete resident and an amateur sommelier (“a trained and knowledgeable wine enthusiast and connoisseur”). 20. Starting In August, the Fènix Cafe will be closed on Sundays, and the Sunday Movie Matinee will transition to the Monday Movie Matinee - keeping the start time of 1pm (not 3pm as was stated in the last movie announcement.) Here is our August Schedule of films: Monday, August 7 - Still Mine (Canada - 2012) Monday, August 14 - Under the Tuscan Sun (USA / Italy - 2003) Monday, August 21 - Garden of the Finzi-Continis (Italy - 1970) SyFi Friday, August 25 - Blade Runner (USA - 1982) Monday, August 28 - lxcanul (Guatamala - 2016) We premiered our monthly "Science Fiction Friday" Film Series yesterday (Friday) with a screening of Fritz Lang's 1927 German epic silent film "Metropolis" - a true classic and a pioneer in the genre. Like our Sunday films , we will select intelligent and often thought provoking science fiction films. The next SyFi Friday Film (August 25) will be the director's cut of Blade Runner, a 1982 American neo-noir science fiction film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, and Edward James Olmos. ----------------------------------------------- This week's film - our last Sunday screening before moving to Mondays: Mother of George (2013 - USA/NYC Nigerian immigrant community) - Drama - 1 hr, 47 min., Rated R I watched this film a couple of years ago at home, and really enjoyed it, as I have enjoyed many other well made films that give us a look at life in other cultures - this one right in the middle of the most populous city in the U.S. Although integrated into their Brooklyn neighborhood, these Nigerian families retain a lot of their home country's culture, including their extraordinarily colorful clothes. From Wikipedia: Mother of George is a 2013 Nigerian [immigrant community] drama film directed by Andrew Dosunmu and tells the story of a newly married couple in Brooklyn who own and manage a small restaurant while struggling with fertility issues. The film opens with the wedding of a Nigerian couple, Ayodele (Issach de Bankolé) and Adenike (Danai Gurira) Balogen. Adenike is given fertility beads by her mother-in-law, Ma Ayo (Bukky Ajayi) and although the couple make love on their first night of marriage, Adenike struggles to become pregnant. Despite drinking a tea that is supposed to help with fertility, Adenike is still unable to conceive and faces growing pressure from Ma Ayo. A visit to the doctor reveals that Adenike can receive help on the issue, but Ayodele refuses to cooperate. Mother of George premièred in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Cinematographer Bradford Young won Sundance 2013's Cinematography Award. The film received critical acclaim. It currently holds a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 40 reviews, with an average rating of 7.1 out of 10. The site consensus states "Director Andrew Dosunmu's style takes some getting used to, but Mother of George compensates with powerful acting, a thoughtful script, and gorgeous visuals." It has been praised for its excellent camera work, setting, and plot. Link to trailer

  22. Our neighbors have lost their beloved puppy. Her name is Gotita. She was last seen in Bajo Boquete on Wednesday afternoon, near The Haven Hotel. She is about 6 months old and weighs 10-12 pounds. She is black-and-tan with a mostly black body and some tan on her legs and face. The hair on her ears is longer and wavy. She appears to be a miniature daschund/spaniel mix.
