  1. Please don't forget, Bud Huber here on CL has come excellent resource links on how to manage staying healthy from this COVID. . He has an excellent resource collection from reputable sources. Do read those links as well !
  2. Alcohol is a disinfectant. A sanitizer...a hand sanitizer. Works for virus as well. I think the use of "Antibacterial' is just a commercial presentation of a sanitizing product..
  3. Shopping and Reducing Virus Exposure: We are reducing the things we really need down to basics so as to limit our time inside any grocery store. If we have to go to Boquete we consolidate everything we do , with a list and a plan so we never linger long anywhere. Clorox wipes for handles on doors and alcohol solution frequently. We make trips to Cero Punta vegetables ( $5.00 bags of mixed veggies. ) Less human exposure and surface contact. Its not really that inconvenient.
  4. Here's a link for information on the viral disease I got because I am an RN....good information. The more I learn the less freaked out I am.... https://info.lww.com/index.php/email/emailWebview
  5. As a retired nurse and educator of nursing, it is basic that you wash your hands when confronted with diseases. In a pinch a rub of alcohol or sanitizer works (only with a good quantity, well rubbed up to the wrist...not just a cursory spritz). BUT THE BEST is the use of running water using friction. Here in the region of Boquete there are homes without RUNNING water. ie: this note written to the Mayor here on his Facebook site buenas trdes es innegable su buen trabajo. pero el problema del agua continua en Villa Boquete ahy viven mis padres y ellos ya son ancianos. no tienen agua hace semanas y ellos viven solos .....Admiran su trabajo votaron por usted Consider that. We must be very careful here . We are in the target zone and this is no longer Kansas. We live within a population that may not have modalities for hygiene that we expats consider standard......running water. Bill and I have placed in an envelope $ for each Ngobe family we normally help. Hundred $ each. I have no doubt they will be getting sick. They are young and most likely will recover. When they come to our door we hand them the envelope with our love...then close the door. That may seem over the top...but ....first, my concern is self protection. We went to Cero Punta for bags of veggies.....I have shared that with neighbors. I will NOT go to a store...period Not now. Dust must settle here. Right now we are coming into the ascending curve of the peak in Panama and this country is leaving an open door to Europe as far as I can discern. Alison Brundage, RN, Nurse educator retired One more thing. Positive cases. These are those that are now pretty ill. We must remember that the reported cases are not the TOTAL # of cases. Young Euro travelers may transit this town and not be showing any symptoms but be contagious....they are walking our streets. Paranoid?...absolutely, I'm 75 yr old. Are we insured? NO. Apparently in this country, once a world Pandemic notice is issued, insurers are off the hook on paying for care for that disease. That law is now under review I guess.
  6. Cero Punta. $5.00 a large bag of fresh packed veggies. We bought several there yesterday and packed bags up for neighbors. We will not go into a store right now...not for awhile. Caution, there is one lane traffic about where Arte Cruz has his wood carving shop. They are bulldozing a mountain off beside the road there. To avoid that you have to take the old narrow winding road to Volcan not the one that goes through Cuesta de Piedra.
  7. Conspiracy theories? It is a known disease that is highly contagious with deaths among the most vulnerable...the elderly ( fairly large population of them here) . Important we just do what we are told to do. Wash hands, stay home if sick and avoid crowds at public places if you are a high risk individual. Keith, My person sense here is it's not the best time to pit Americans, retired here, against their own government. That's just my own opinion. What's the point? Maybe I'm missing something.
  8. Well....my hunch is many if not most, will be exposed to this. The virus sails in the wind with a cough, on hands, on money on door knobs. The risk gets higher if you go where there is people traffic. (ie: think about shopping for tomatoes at a fruit stand...how many get touched over and over ) On remedy measures: I read this on a list of measures from an Internal Medicine doc: James Robb, MD FCAP "Stock up now with zinc lozenges. These lozenges have been proven to be effective in blocking coronavirus (and most other viruses) from multiplying in your throat and nasopharynx. Use as directed several times each day when you begin to feel ANY "cold-like" symptoms beginning. It is best to lie down and let the lozenge dissolve in the back of your throat and nasopharynx. Cold-Eeze lozenges is one brand available, but there are other brands available. *There are also studies which show that “hyper loading” on vitamin-c can be very effective for common flu and they are testing this for COVID-19. For adults this generally means 500mg every hour until flu symptoms are gone. Past medical studies have been done where patients receive up to 1000mg per hour for 24 hours. Excessive vitamin-c overload will cause diarrhea. So if that happens, slightly reduce the dosage per hour. Do not repeat this cycle for an additional 24 hours. Reduce to normal dosage for at least 24-48 hours before performing a hyper-loading cycle again. Stay hydrated! I, as many others do, hope that this pandemic will be reasonably contained, BUT I personally do not think it will be. Humans have never seen this snake-associated virus before and have no internal defense against it. Tremendous worldwide efforts are being made to understand the molecular and clinical virology of this virus. Unbelievable molecular knowledge about the genomics, structure, and virulence of this virus has already been achieved. BUT, there will be NO drugs or vaccines available this year to protect us or limit the infection within us. Only symptomatic support is available for now which is why it is crucial to properly prepare. I hope these personal thoughts will be helpful during this potentially catastrophic pandemic. You are welcome to share this email." James Robb, MD FCAP"
  9. We are at risk here. At this point everyone is on their own. Those that believe in certain protective and curative modalities , and care about friends and neighbors here are sharing information. One thing is clear.: there is NO CURE for this virus right now . Either the immune system kicks it, or it succumbs and the patient fails. Antibiootics kill bacteria...not viruses. Vit C in mega doses.....may help . For me, I'd rather NOT get it so I've become a bit OCD on cleaning. With this wind?....if someone sneezes across the street it's in my face in 2 seconds. ( yeiks) ( at this point we should be acting "as if" it's right here in Boquete ) Alison, retired nurse
  10. Every time we pass the huge excavation between the two main roads to and from David from Boquete, not far from the bridge over Rio David, we ponder what they are doing there. Who's doing it? What for? Lots of dirt removed, lots of rocks placed in rows. Mighty puzzling. Nobody seems to know. Anybody know?????
  11. The video: Just a gal who loves travel, involves her girls, and apparently makes a buck doing videoblogs. Its her take on this place Boquete she had heard word of. I enjoyed the video. The 8 year veteran who recommended armed guards at a gated community in order to live here? ......WAY over the top. Window bars are common. Majority of local residents all have them. Armed guards?...maybe Guatemala.
  12. I agree. That's a nasty area there. Even the rivers flowing to it wreak of waste water. There's a river right next to the Punta Pacifica hospital complex that runs milky grey and stinks to high heaven. ( I am recalling the stories I learned about the hospitals in the Crimea Florence Nightengale attended...Ditches surrounded the hospital...hospital waste was tossed into them. High infection rate ! ) Foul fetid water belches into that bay Panama City sits on !. Maybe the $ $ should be converted to a fund to counter increasing gang violence.
  13. until

    OH my......
  14. This plan to promote flow of tourists with money on stop-over-tourism might not work so well if this deadly flu keeps traveling. More flow of flu ??? just askin. It's unsettling to me to think we are in fact living in vicinity of one of the worlds most trafficked crossroads. I can't help it...I'm a nurse and this entire situation is worrisome .
  15. Sad......very sad. Our hearts break for Oso. All I can say is Javier and Magaly are very special people. They have very little (...money a/o time for themselves...) personally. They dedicate their lives to dogs who need help. They are amazingly empathetic people. We all need to support them one way or another. God bless you J & M!
  16. I guess the same way the fire arms got in and all hell broke loose inside there with gang warfare. Glad to see the President promptly fired some officials ( right after the official had fired some men under him. ) Somehow some money got into the pocket that opened the jail door. $50 grand is a lot of money for a reward. They want that escapee pretty bad I'd say.
  17. I wonder what the " animal welfare department" in each municipality financed by this new bill will actually do and how? I must say It certainly is encouraging......a start
  18. Well we have had the water on then off (with most days off) and water coming in at night. Those here without tanks are waterless most of the time during the day. Today the water is on and the pressure is very high (off the Richter) . That said, we love life here in Boquete and do not regret for a nano-second our 12 years here in Brisas. We just deal with the situation as best we can . Subdivisions like ours have no home owners association dues for common maintenance. We all contribute voluntarily to the upkeep. That said, our ability to pave roads or install fancy water regulation systems is beyond the budget of most resident here. We all need to do our own research on where we decide to live . Water issues here have not changed much in the years we have been here. BTW, I seriously doubt Realtors have an inside scoop on Municipal projects that are not even on the horizon . Brisas Boquetenas.
  19. Well worth every dime ! We have one. Pressure here sometimes is as high as Keith describes ...actually higher . I have always wondered about the possibility of water pressure regulation inline in a subdivision such as ours (Brisas) where both the lower houses and as well the ones on higher ground could receive equal pressure without bursting lines at the seams. The pressure here can be so high as to create leaks to the surface from below the storm drains in the street...when it's that high I know to run our hose in the yard to reduce pressure so we don't have a gusher inside the house. When we leave for vacation we turn the water to the house off at the street. When we moved here 12 years ago, we knew that there was a large community reserve tank that supposedly supplied Brisas . That tank we were told by the government could not be used for some regulatory reason. It's now sitting empty...rusting. It would be nice to define these water issue problems that have been repeating for over a decade, , solve them, and if necessary allow the Brisas community to assist in moving to a solution. To date the problems repeat "as if" undefined as to their cause. ( high , low pressure and outage..unannounced) Question: I notice a huge subdivision built on the road to Caldera just before Boquete Canyon Village. Looks like a hundred homes or more. How will we ( in Brisas ) receive adequate water service once all those homes come on-line if issues unresolved remain.....unresolved for over a decade?
  20. Brisas Boquetenas: Water has been in sporadic shut-down mode for approximately a month. Rarely is there water flowing during the day. Usually we get water to fill the reserve tank at night. Our home is a lower altitude than those at the entry of the Brisas subdivision. I was told that those homes at the entry had been totally out for 9 days. Those homes as well had longer outages than we did in the same subdivision for the last month. For several months now we have had periods of water pressure so high the water lines ruptured in the usual areas that always break. So yes in Brisas there are problems that have yet to be resolved. Some broken lines here have been broken and leaking for months now. If the water is running down the road we know the water is on. We still use a children's plastic pool for extra water on hand.
