The driver fled the scene but was stopped by members of the Naval Air Service (SENAN) at a nearby roundabout. The injured cyclists, one Italian and one Uruguayan had to be transferred to a local hospital. Their condition is unknown. According to preliminary reports, the couple allegedly fell asleep inside the red Kia sedan with the engine running and prolonged inhalation of carbon monoxide led to their deaths. The driver of the taxi was killed. According to Major Ángel Delgado, from the Panama Fire Department, 25 people were injured, 24 of with minor injuries. The bus driver was seriously injured. The event that left the most fatalities was on the road to Las Mendoza, in front of the Loma Linda neighborhood, where four people died. The death of three people was confirmed during a reported traffic accident on the Inter-American Highway, in the Costa Verde sector. There was another fatal victim Sunday on the Inter-American Highway, in the Valle Hermoso sector, Arraiján district, where the vehicle involved ended up in a ditch. Data provided by the National Police, show that a total of 989 infractions were placed in the last 24 hours at the national level. One person died and five were rescued, reported the National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc). The 46-year-old driver of one of the vehicles was trapped, while the rest were able to get out e and climb onto a nearby island. Officials from Sinaproc and the Fire Department participated in the search and rescue operation. Sinaproc reiterated that it issued a national prevention notice, which will last until August 24, due to the entry into the country of tropical wave No. 29. The call was made to the population to be aware of the levels of the rivers and streams.
