WELCOME TO THE FINCA FELIZ GARDEN TOUR
In November 2010 I bought a small, neglected coffee farm just under 2800 square meters (approx. ¾ acre). I transformed it into my life-long dream of a place to grow organic food and medicinal herbs.
Gardening in Panama has a “learning curve” I didn’t expect, and I will inform you of what I’ve learned including all the challenges and tricks that came along the way. Gardening can be a hobby or a passion. Either way, being successful is the goal, and sharing what I’ve learned will help you in your gardening journey.
Finca Feliz is well known in Boquete for the blackberries (mora) and 3 varieties of avocados grown and made available. The newest addition of Electro Culture to the farm has proven this ancient technique works. Things grow bigger and better when you connect to the Electromagnetic energy of the earth.
You will learn what plants in the garden will keep away the bugs and pests. The medicinal plants used for healing here in Panama, how to plant your seeds by the moon phases, making compost without turning the soil, and what organic products I use. There is a private nursery with many plants and orchids available, including Panama’s medicinal herbs.
Electro Culture is the star of the tour. You’ll see how easy it is to install in your garden to benefit the soil and grow things bigger and better. Growing a 4 lb. avocado was all the proof I needed. Look for the flyer in town with a picture and information.
Upon confirmation of your reservation, you will receive a list of plants available for sale from the Nursery, exclusive products produced only at Finca Feliz, and directions to the farm. It is located 4 km up Volcancito Rd.
We are booking tours every other Monday at 9am starting Feb. 26th Mar 11th & Mar 25th.Saturday March 2nd 16th and 30th have been added to the schedule for those who work during the week. Accommodations for private groups are available. The price per person is $30. No pre-payment necessary, just pay when you arrive. If you can’t come, please let us know so someone else can attend.

JANUARY CLINIC
On Sunday January 28th, Amigos de Animales spayed or neutered 314 animals, 134 dogs and 180 cats with seven vets working.
72% of the animals were female and 49% came from Boquete. 236 animals were brought in by owners and 78 came with collectors.

Saving the Neighbor's Dog: Charcoal and Pumpkin Puree
Hurston, Christy's little terrier mix, was poisoned by a cane toad while Jeanette (Christy's mom) was caring for their dogs. Despite the lack of available vets (this was on a Sunday), Debe and Rod Emerson, the neighbors sprang into action. Unable to open Hurston's mouth as it was locked shut from the poison, they wiped the inside of his cheeks, rinsed with towels, and repeated the process. It was a race against time to save him.
Hurston weighed 29 lbs. After ingesting poison, Debe and Rod mixed 1/3 of an 8-gram bag of charcoal with water and applied it to his cheeks and gums. They also tried egg whites to neutralize the poison as suggested by a local vet. A friend, Larry Pascal, provided Atropina-V and saline for hydration.
With great effort, they administered activated charcoal to absorb the toxins. Using a turkey baster, they gently delivered the thick liquid down his throat, ensuring he didn't choke or vomit. After several rounds, they switched to 100% pure pumpkin puree—a natural laxative—to help with constipation. Our patient pup eventually regained alertness and flexibility, and they celebrated small victories like him licking his legs. The pumpkin puree worked wonders, and he even stood outside in the breeze, eyes closing as if ready for a nap.

CASINO NIGHT - March 21st
We have set Thursday March 21st as the date for our next Casino Night. It will be a great night of fun, games and prizes! $20 entry includes appetizers by Christopher Young, one free drink and funny money. Tickets can be purchased at Mailboxes Etc, Mike's Global Grill and the BCP Tuesday Market.

KEVIN LEO, "LITTLE PAVORATTI", CONCERTS AT LOS MOLINOS
We're excited to announce two concerts that will benefit DogCamp and us! Kevin Leo is a world-renowned performer. He has been dubbed “Little Pavarotti" as he has a really nice tenor voice. He does singing and joke telling. He is a person who can sing opera and also Frank Sinatra, Elvis and other known artists.
The concerts will be held at Los Molinos on Friday April 12th from 6-9:30 PM, and on Sunday April 14th from 1-4 PM.
Tickets are $35 which includes the performance and a buffet meal by Los Molinos. There will be a cash bar. Tickets can be purchased at Mailboxes Etc, Mike's Global Grill, the BCP Tuesday Market, and the TapOut Tuesday Market

REMEMBERING LYNN DUNCANSON

Name: Gabriel and Petra Henriquez
Your position/title with AdA: Gabriel - Surgical Assistant; Petra - Wherever I am needed
How long have you been working with AdA? About one year
Can you tell us a little bit more about what you do with AdA? Gabriel - As a surgical assistant, the first thing I do is to prepare the operating table and put out the instruments that the vet will need to operate. I check all the information on the tag to learn about each animal and fill in the form with all the procedures performed on the animal. Then I prepare the animal for surgery, keeping an eye on the animal’s breathing and pulse and help the vet as needed throughout the process. I have also been working for the Educational Outreach Program, visiting local schools and talking to the kids about Amigos de Animales and the importance of sterilizing their pets. I also talk to them about how to properly take care of a pet.
Petra - I serve as a link between owners and AdA; I perform post-operative care; wake them up and bring them to their owners. Also interesting are the “Outside Clinics,” because you meet other people, see the problems in other villages and help people in areas who have less access to veterinary care.
Why would you encourage others to volunteer here with AdA? Gabriel - It is a great thing to do, when you are part of a dedicated team that works hard together to help solve a social problem. By taking actions to control the pet population, we are taking steps to make this world a better place to live in and of course, helping the animals.
Petra - Because you can be social while doing something that makes sense in your life! Animals need our help and people need more education regarding how to treat animals. Therefore, the work with AdA is so important to better control the reproduction of unwanted dogs and cats and help minimize the spread of disease and the suffering and starvation of these animals.

The U.S. Embassy in Panama is pleased to announce representatives from the Consular Section will visit Nueva Gorgona (March 11), Chitre (March 12), and Boquete (March 13) to offer select consular services. Please review the information below and follow the link provided for specific time/place information, and to request an appointment.
Only the following types of consular services will be offered, and by confirmed appointment only:
üPassport application for minor (less than 16-years-old) with a previous U.S. passport
üFirst-time adult passport issuance (16-years-old and older) with a previous U.S. passport
üReplacement of a lost/stolen U.S. passport
üRenewal of a U.S. passport that cannot be mailed in (e.g. changes of data, such as your last name).
üNotarial - submission of a non-applying parent consent form (DS-3053)
üNotarial - foreign driver's license validation

Please submit your request for one of the above consular services through this LINK. Once all spaces are taken, the form will be closed, and appointment confirmations will be emailed.
Additionally, representatives from the Consular Section will host a U.S. citizen townhall in Boquete on March 13, from 10:30-11:30am, at Boquete Library! This townhall will be for U.S. citizens and focused on absentee voting in the 2024 U.S. elections. No preregistration is needed for this townhall, but space is limited, and attendees are encouraged to arrive early.

"Yoga for the Rest of Us"Celeste is a yoga therapist and meditation instructor whose work focuses on the journey to healthy aging, which involves a better understanding of how stress and anxiety affect us, and how the lack of movement and regular exercise creates a lot of the “issues we have in our tissues.” She has a passion for helping people to feel more at home in their bodies and comfortable with their thoughts.
Celeste will take the group through some basic techniques that will help you relax more, feel better, and sleep more soundly. Please come to the meeting in comfortable clothes. No need for a mat or props, but you should be able to move around without clothing being restricting. Donations to support our work are gratefully accepted.
Yoga is everywhere these days: gyms, studios, parks, even on surfboards and mountaintops. People are striving to find, as Celeste’s daughter would say, “their Zennie zone.” The problem is that in order to do what they think they need to do to be fit, hip, cool, and Zen they work very hard at looking like they are, and lose the ability to be.
As older humans who have been around a while, we may be a bit jaded to this sort of behavior. It could even turn people against the very idea of yoga as a healing modality for them. All the hype that seems to go with the get-fit yoga lifestyle is exhausting, frustrating, and honestly—expensive! $150 yoga pants? Really?!? What about the rest of us? Is yoga for us?
Yes, it is, especially now. Many people don’t realize how beneficial yoga can be to their healthy aging, well-being, sleep, strength and overall fitness. But it should include focused techniques for breathing and movement, starting with good, easy stretches that will leave you feeling more comfortable in your body and with a peaceful mind.
Celeste Mendelsohn is an IAYT Certified yoga therapist and an ERYT500 teacher with Yoga Alliance. She is certified to teach meditation, and is currently training in iRest Yoga Nidra and EMDR. Celeste works with clients with a variety of issues, including heart disease, cancer, mobility challenges, anxiety, depression, trauma, and addiction. Yoga tarana means yoga for healing, which Celeste practices herself, and hopes to teach others to do, every day of her life.

Our Mission StatementOur mission is to inform and promote community health. To support people with health and wellness needs by providing information, equipment, and volunteer services. To provide palliative (hospice) care for the terminally ill in order that they may experience death with dignity and limited pain. To create a culture of respect and appreciation within our organization and a rewarding experience for our volunteers.

Dear Friends of Boquete Health & Hospice,
2023 was a banner year for Boquete Health & Hospice. With the ability to now make home visits to provide care for our hospice patients, we anticipate an even better 2024.
Our Equipment and Respiratory teams have been busy lending beds, wheelchairs, oxygen concentrators, and many other items, which is a great service to the community. We’ve started off the new year with our popular CPR and Being Prepared workshops, and the next New Volunteer Orientation is February 5-6. Our other teams are gearing up for an amazing year.
The new year also brings some organizational changes. We now have two administrative assistant volunteers to help coordinate our services and improve efficiency. Denise Daniels is the lead, with Gordon Morgan as her backup.
We recently held a productive two-year planning meeting to examine our processes and team structure, reevaluate our mission and the services we provide, and look for efficiencies to be gained. These changes couldn’t be possible without the help of our wonderful volunteers who provide our programs and services to the community. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
We’re also excited about a number of new team leads in the organization: Hospice and Family Care, Communications, Translation, Speaker Coordination, and other areas. Celeste Mendelsohn Presents
"Yoga for the Rest of Us"Join us Wednesday, February 14, from 10-11am at the Animales Event Center in Alto Boquete for Celeste Mendelsohn’s presentation at our February general meeting. Celeste is a yoga therapist and meditation instructor whose work focuses on the journey to healthy aging, which involves better understanding of how stress and anxiety affect us, and how the lack of movement and regular exercise creates a lot of the “issues we have in our tissues.” She has passion for helping people to feel more at home in their bodies and comfortable with their thoughts.
Celeste will take the group through some basic techniques that will help you relax more, feel better, and sleep more soundly. Please come to the meeting in comfortable clothes. No need for a mat or props, but you should be able to move around without clothing being restricting. Preregistration is not required and this event is free, though donations to support our work are gratefully accepted.
Yoga is everywhere these days: gyms, studios, parks, even on surfboards and mountaintops. People are striving to find, as Celeste’s daughter would say, “their Zennie zone.” The problem is that in order to do what they think they need to do to be fit, hip, cool, and Zen they work very hard at looking like they are, and lose the ability to be.
As older humans who have been around a while, we may be a bit jaded to this sort of behavior. It could even turn people against the very idea of yoga as a healing modality for them. All the hype that seems to go with the get-fit yoga lifestyle is exhausting, frustrating, and honestly—expensive! $150 yoga pants? Really?!? What about the rest of us? Is yoga for us?

Being Prepared Workshop Offered February 27
You're invited to join BHH for the first Being Prepared for End of Life in Boquete workshop of 2024 on February 27 at 10am at the Animales Event Center in Alto Boquete. Preregistration is required and a workshop guide is necessary.Take the fear out of an unexpected health crisis, and learn how to be prepared for accidents, illness, and end of life. This 90-minute workshop offers guidance to navigate paperwork that will put you in legal compliance with Panama laws, help you think about the difficult questions on your end-of-life care, get your affairs in order, and provide peace of mind and reduce stress for yourself and your loved ones.
Dealing with end-of-life decisions in Boquete is much, much different than doing so in your home country. This workshop is an eye-opening experience that you will not want to miss.
The volunteers presenting this workshop possess years of experience in the healthcare and legal fields and have personal experiences to share:
- Retired ICU nurse Kelly Honyak offers personal insights about the value of preparing and educating oneself for the unknown.
- Moderator Penny Barrett, a long-time resident who has seen many expats come and go, highlights the importance of end-of-life planning.
- Retired nurse Charlotte Lintz, who was instrumental in developing the program, will now lead the team.
- Attorney Oliver Candanedo addresses legal requirements for wills, power of attorney, and related matters and has worked with many expats in Boquete.
- Denese Rogers, US citizen volunteer embassy liaison, offers information on expat safety, rights, and benefits.

Quilt Raffle is Closing Soon!
We're selling raffle tickets for this full-sized and cozy quilt, artfully made and generously donated to BHH by master quilter Sarah Zink of Zinky's Quilts.
The drawing will be held at the February 14 general meeting. You need not be present to win. Raffle tickets can be purchased for $5 each or 3 for $10. You can buy raffle tickets at our Tuesday Market tables at Tap Out or the Feria in the Arco Iris room, or at our February general meeting.

The largest BHH New Volunteer Orientation Class ever was held on February 5, with even more students that in our September class. The streamlined training afforded new volunteers the opportunity to learn more about our organization and the services it provides so they can choose a team that will offer a rewarding volunteer experience.
Kudos to Kat McKay, Nina Haldeman, and Natalie Kelly for their work to further streamline and deliver the program; to additional presenters Dr. Rod Gottula, Bev Tyler, Laurie Collier, and Art Blevins (via video); to Max Wolfe for setting the team up for success with all her previous work; to Ambassador Team Lead Denise Danielsfor set-up, sign-in, and supplies; and Dr. Rod and Dan Jampole for audio/visual assistance.
Participants met team leads and Council members and got to know their fellow new volunteers. A heartfelt THANK YOU to our newest volunteers for their dedication to helping others. Boquete Health & Hospice continues to grow and provide more services to the Boquete community, and as we do, more volunteers are needed.
BHH is comprised of a diverse group of people of many ages and backgrounds who want to serve the community, use their skills, and meet new and interesting people. Hospice Services are Back, and We Need Volunteers!
Great News! In the past few months BHH has resumed hospice care and visiting patients in their homes, and we're ready to expand. We will resume providing rides to medical appointments, providing relief to caregivers for short periods of time, running errands that don't involve going into the home, and providing meals for those who really need them.
We would love to have new volunteers join us in our efforts to serve our community. A background in a medical field is not necessary, just the willingness to help. For more details, give us a call at 6781-9250 or email boquetehospice@gmail.com.

Book Now for February CPR Training
Learn to save a life and help a family member, friend, or neighbor in an emergency by attending BHH CPR training. There are still some spots available for the February 14 CPR workshop, so sign up today.
The training will be held at the Animales Event Center in Alto Boquete and starts at 11:30am following our general meeting. The classes last about an hour. During the training, our amazing instructors teach participants hands-on CPR chest compressions (no mouth-to-mouth) and the Heimlich maneuver for airway obstruction.
This is a non-certified course. Preregistration is required and class size is limited to 16 for each class, so please register by completing the form at this link or emailing CPR@boquetehealth.org.
Although this event is free, donations to support our work are gratefully accepted.

The Ricardo Guerros
Ricardo lives with his wife, Deimy, and three children ages 8-11. They live in a tiny one room house with the kitchen and bathroom facilities behind the house.
Ricardo was previously employed as a bus driver for Avicola, the chicken company, until he had a stroke which left his right side partially paralyzed. After extensive physical therapy he can walk with a cane but has limited use of his right hand. He receives a small pension for his disability but because it wasn't a work related injury he doesn't receive any other assistance.
The children are healthy and happy and the parents chose to live in their current location because it is closer to school. A good education for their children is a top priority for Ricardo and his wife.
They are grateful to be part of Buenos Vecinos's food support program. It has been a challenge for them to have enough food for the family at times with their limited income.
Thank You for Bottle Donations
Thanks for the tremendous response to our request for plastic bottles with handles for our Food Start program. Due to your donations, we now have a several month supply of bottles and we are not in need of bottle donations at this time.
Boquete Volunteer-Palooza
Tuesday, 30 January, marked the first Boquete Volunteer-Palooza of what we hope is a yearly event.
To draw attention to the event, there was a mariachi band playing for the first hour. Attendees enjoyed listening to the spirited songs and speaking with the musicians.

Held at the Arco Iris building, it was a part of the regular Tuesday Market. The event offered anyone there the opportunity to see volunteer organizations in Chiriquí which are currently active. Buenos Vecinos, Boquete Knitters, and the Fundacion Pro-Integracion (Handicap Foundation) were all well represented.
Are you looking for a way to volunteer with Buenos Vecinos?
If you’re interested in volunteering with Buenos Vecinos de Boquete, there are a number of opportunities. We need drivers to deliver our food bags to client families. We also need substitute drivers, as our regular drivers may not be able to deliver food every month. We have Spanish speaking volunteers who can assist on your deliveries.
Some of the other volunteering opportunities we have include: train to be an ambassador and represent BVB at the Tuesday Market, join other volunteers at the Handicap Foundation on Saturday morning to play games and do crafts with some of our clients who have special challenges or serve on a committee like fundraising, special events or social media. Volunteer of the Month
Stan Kempf is a well-rounded man. He takes piano lessons, sails, and more. He is friendly and enjoys talking to people. Originally from Dallas, TX, Stan chose to move to Panama in 2016 after talking with a Panamanian co-worker which piqued his interest. “After some research, the summer of 2013, I came on a relocation tour, visiting Panama City, Volcan, Coronado, and Boquete. The following year, 2014, I returned for another visit. I chose Boquete because of the climate. I wanted to retire and live in a different country, learn and experience another culture and, as a challenge, learn another language.”
He began volunteering almost immediately; the second week he was here he began offering his time at the Handicap Foundation of Panama (Fundación Pro Integración de Panamá). The more he volunteered, the more he heard about BVB. He had volunteered with Louise Orr and Paul Arandale at other events and he wanted to give back more, so about five years ago he asked to be included in the monthly volunteer email.
When asked why he chose to donate his time to BVB, Stan responded “I wanted to be involved in the community and contribute as much time as I could as a way of giving back. It’s just the right thing to do, helping the less fortunate who really need it. It just seemed natural. I credit my mother, Betty. Since I was 12 years old, my mother would take me to all her volunteer activities which she went to after a full day at work. She was usually in charge of these activities, so she’d put me to work.”
Stan began his volunteer work at BVB as one of the “heavy lifters.” He started working with Paul and the other men outside organizing the clients’ filled food bags, which is the heavy work. Currently, he is packing, so he is on the food line.
Saturdays, as he does his cross-volunteer work with the Handicap Foundation, he passes out food and does more heavy lifting such as exchanging gas tanks or moving items. Additionally, Stan helps clients complete the activity of the day, and he goes to pick up donated items.
When asked about his most powerful experiences as a volunteer, he said packing the food on the last Thursday of the month, and two days later seeing the clients’ faces as they pick up their food bags is humbling and personally rewarding. “These people are just a very small percentage of those who really need our help. Without BVB these families would be struggling finding food.” He also finds it moving to assist clients, when asked, to carry the heavy bags of food across the street to the bus stop. Stan continues with “I know they are grateful for what we do because when we see each other in Boquete or in David they always say ‘hola’ or wave to me.”
Buenos Vecinos exists to help people who are unable to meet their basic food needs. We have provided emergency food support on many occasions and have been successful in helping families through hard times. We will help them with food support until the working age adults in the family can find enough income to become self-sustaining.

The Boquete post office has a long list of people who have neglected to pick up their mail. Much of the mail is from the US or Canada taxing authorities and much of it is from the US Social Security Administration. If you fail to respond to a proof of life form mailed to you from Social Security, your checks will stop coming.
Stop at the Boquete Post Office at the East side of the downtown park between 7 Am and 2:30 weekdays and between 7 AM and 12 on Saturdays. The nice ladies are waiting for you to pick up your mail.
