  1. Greetins to all Boquete Residents,

We just started a brand-new rowing club in Boca Chica, Chiriqui at Seagull Cove Resort. And we're inviting new members who'd be interested in joining the Club. Either to row competitively, or just to enjoy it as the healthy, recreational activity, rowing can be for all ages.  Rowing is also a great opportunity to work out, socialize at our Club's Tiki Bar, and enjoy the idyllic beauty of the gulf of Chiriqui.

Our club offers "Learn to Row " programs as well as rowing tours to take in the beauty of the Gulf of Chiriqui. We are eager to develop a competition program as well, both through club competitions and participating in international events. For that, we're already affiliated with rowing clubs & groups in the Netherlands and Canada, who actively support our club ambitions here in Panama. That will build nice opportunities for international club exchanges too.

Find out if this is something for you? The best way is simply to come down for one of our Intro Camps. Two or three days at the Seagull Cove resort where we have our boats right on the beach, and have a look for yourself. Whether as an athletic ambition or a much more relaxed wellness activity: rowing between the islands here is something that we are sure you will love!

We will be hosting intro camps from May 15th to June 15ths at Seagull Cove Resort, we are only a short 1.5 hour drive from Boquete!

  4. Greetings to the Boquete Community from Milky Way Creamery!

Many of you already know us from the Tuesday markets where we have offered our goat dairy products for over 10 years.  For those of you whom we haven’t yet had the pleasure of meeting, Milky Way is a farmstead goat dairy and creamery right here in Boquete. Although the goats are our main focus, we also have other animals, as well as some vegetables and ornamental plants.

Over the years, we’ve had fantastic results with our veggies and flowers by using a fertilizer that we've been producing ever since we started raising goats.  Right now we’re offering it to the rest of the community.

Our organic fertilizer is made using a mixture of fully composted (black soil), partially composted, and raw goat, duck, chicken, and green manure. The result is a mixture that's teeming with beneficial microorganisms that can support the growth of your plants for 6+ months. You can grow directly on it, or you can use it as the perfect soil amendment for your raised bed and potting mixes.
The 50 lb. bag is $12.50.

Piero will be in the Plaza San Francisco Plaza in Alto Boquete on Saturday, April 6th between 9:00-9:30 A.M., ready to load up your vehicle.  He will be parked across the street on the south side of the plaza.  You will see our red Toyota SUV as you turn off the main road.

If you are interested in purchasing a bag or have any questions, please let us know via email, or call Piero at 6481-6397. On other occasions we have sold out, so please do reserve or call us before you head out - we'd hate for you to waste a trip!

Finally, if you are interested in purchasing a carload of bags (12 or more), we offer complimentary delivery within the Boquete area.

    Testimonials are below.

    Best wishes to you all,

    Piero and Adriane

“We have known Piero for several years and are quite impressed with his operation.  Personally we love his goat milk and cheeses. We also utilize his composted manure to help grow our worms for their organic worm casing fertilizer.  We feel he produces an excellent product and would encourage others to try it.”

    Ron Miller

             Finca Santa Marta

I am an avid gardener and have used Piero's goat berries for the last 2 years. I usually spread them in early rainy season. The growth, vibrancy, health and flower production is fantastic. Far superior to anything I have used on the gardens in the 14 years I have lived here.

    Victoria Lee Appenzeller

    The Hacienda Bed and Breakfast

“Piero's goat manure is a great addition to my organic garden. I've never had such great veggies in my life. Very rich in nutrients! I am very pleased and would recommend it to anyone who wants a super healthy garden.”

    Eric Christensen

“Piero’s goat manure really makes a strong difference with my organic veggies, especially the carrots, cucumbers & tomatoes…It’s also extremely convenient & affordable for the results it produces.”

    MARCH 2024 NEWSLETTER

CLINIC MUSINGS FROM OUR PRESIDENT & FEBRUARY CLINIC

Dear volunteers: As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over our bustling clinic, you stood tall—tired but resolute. Today was no ordinary day; it was a marathon of compassion, resilience, and unwavering commitment. Let's take a moment to celebrate the extraordinary accomplishments that unfolded during this long and tiring clinic session.

    1. **Sterilization Triumph**: You sterilized a staggering 328 animals. Among them were **153 dogs** and **175 cats**—each procedure a step toward curbing overpopulation and ensuring healthier lives for our furry companions.

    2. **Tumor Warriors**: In a quiet corner, under the focused gaze of our skilled veterinarians, **three brave dogs** emerged victorious. Their tumors, once ominous, were skillfully excised. These pups can now wag their tails without pain, their futures brighter than ever.

    3. **A Leg Restored**: Imagine the gratitude in the eyes of that one dog—the one whose leg was amputated today. The leg that had caused relentless pain and hindered mobility. You made the tough call, and now that dog can run, play, and embrace life anew.

    4. **Sparkling Smiles**: Amid the flurry of surgeries, you didn't forget the basics. With gentle hands, you cleaned the teeth of **three lucky dogs**, ensuring not only fresh

breath but also healthier gums. Their wagging tails were your silent applause.

    5. **Empathy and Information**: Our clinic isn't just about procedures; it's about families. You sat down with **two families**, their hearts heavy with concern. You updated them on their pets' cancer progression, allowing them time to weigh their options. Your empathy mattered.

    6. **Antibiotics and Healing**:  You handed out little vials of hope—antibiotics to pets battling infections. These tiny doses would mend wounds, soothe fevers, and restore vitality. You sent them home with love and care.

    7. **Puppy Spotlight**: And then there were the puppies—the wide-eyed, hopeful souls. You gave them exposure, a chance to be seen. Maybe it was the way they tilted their heads or the softness in their eyes, but you knew they deserved more. You increased their chances of adoption, one cuddle at a time.

**Volunteers, you are the heartbeat of our clinic. Your hands, your compassion, and your unwavering spirit create ripples of change. You've touched lives, healed hearts, and made a difference.**

You have my immense gratitude, Leslie Sherling, President

Celebrating Compassion: Potrerillos Clinic's Remarkable Day

147 animals underwent sterilization thanks to the efforts of our Potrerillos family.

Raquel, Sara, Sol and talented students orchestrated this compassionate effort. Raquel herself brought in 9 animals and Sara arranged for care for a box of abandoned kittens!

A tiny abandoned pup was provided with loving care for the day and a valued volunteer took it home to continue care.

The incredible crew from Boquete showed up at  6 am to set up and stayed to the very end to make sure all animals were safe. Amazing!

Our deepest gratitude to all who made this day remarkable.

**Botflies: Uninvited Guests in the World of Mammals**

These remarkable insects have a fascinating life cycle, and their impact on mammals—is significant. Let's delve into the world of botflies:

    1. **What Are Botflies?**

       - A **botfly** is any fly within the family **Oestridae**. Their life cycles vary across species, but one common thread unites them: **internal parasitism**. These flies are masters of adaptation, each species finding its unique niche within their hosts.

    2. **Life Cycle and Infestation**:
       - **Egg Deposition**: Botflies lay their eggs directly on a host or use intermediaries like mosquitoes, stable flies, or ticks to transport the eggs. The warmth of the host's body triggers hatching.
       - **Larval Invasion**: Once hatched, tiny botfly larvae penetrate the host's skin. Some species grow within the flesh, while others inhabit the alimentary tracts.
       - **The "Bot" Connection**: The term "bot" refers to the maggot stage of these flies.

    3. **Protecting Dogs from Botflies**:
       - **Preventive Measures**:
         - **Inspect**: Regularly check your dog's skin for any unusual lumps or bumps.
         - **Avoid High-Risk Areas**: Keep your dog away from areas where botflies thrive.
         - **Insect Repellents**: Use dog-safe insect repellents to deter botflies.
       - **Treatment**:
         - **Prompt Removal**: If you notice a lump or suspect botfly infestation, consult a veterinarian. Early removal is crucial.
         - **Surgical Extraction**: In severe cases, surgical removal may be necessary.
         - **Pain Management**: Post-removal, manage pain and promote healing.
         - **Antibiotics**: If the wound becomes infected, antibiotics are essential.

    4. **Remember**: Botflies are fascinating creatures, but their presence can be uncomfortable for our furry friends. Stay vigilant, seek professional help when needed, and let's protect our beloved dogs from these uninvited guests.

GET TO KNOW OUR AMIGOS DE ANIMALES FAMILY

This month we're featuring another husband and wife team:

    Names: Ken and Maxi Andrews

Your position/title with AdA:  Ken - Animal taxi and data input at the clinics; Maxi - I am a surgical assistant, usually for Dr. Virgilio Gonzalez Quiel during the Boquete clinics and away clinics and am a surgical coordinator for the away clinics.

    Ken%20and%20Maxi%20Andrews%20pic%201sq.jpg

How long have you been working with AdA?  Ken – A little over a year since January 2023; Maxi – 6.5 years

Can you tell us a little bit more about what you do with AdA? Ken – At the home clinics in Boquete, I usually taxi dogs and cats from station to station in the morning and do data input for animal intake where the animals are weighed and given their anesthetic.  At the away clinics, I usually taxi the animals all day. I help with the set up for home clinics and with the van loading, unloading, and set up for the away clinics.
Maxi – I help the surgeon during surgery.  I also coordinate surgery for the away clinics and help load and unload the van for the away clinics.

Why would you encourage others to volunteer here with AdA?  Ken - There is always something that needs to be done to facilitate the AdA goal of spay and neutering dogs and cats in Chiriqui. No matter what your life experience and expertise are, everyone has some useful to contribute to the many tasks that need to be done to coordinate a smoothly run clinic.  I really enjoy the camaraderie of the whole group and it’s focus on serving the community.

Maxi – Without the clinics, the unwanted animal population in our area would continue to increase.  There are so many ways to volunteer.  Everybody can find an opportunity to suit their talents and interests.

Click here for the rest of Ken's & Maxi's stories and more pictures on our website.

    What others are saying....

    * To say Dr. Sunny Roe has helped me is an understatement. Sure I came to her a little skeptical, I’ve been through many a therapist over the past year and a half of my grief process after having lost my husband of 24 years to cancer. I’ve been devastated and just able to keep my head above water without drowning in my grief. And she is the only one who has been able to bridge the connections between past and present emotions through her mind body balance sessions. She works with the physical body to release tension which enables the mind to open up and heal. It has made a huge impact in my healing process and the difference is extraordinary. I walk away elevated after every session.

    ~ Melissa Brettingham-Moore, Boquete, Panama

    * I recommend working with Dr Sunny Roe for anyone experiencing body pain and tension or if they feel "stuck" in life. If it worked with me who had life long health issues and tried many treatments, I believe she can help anyone on life's journey.
                                                                                                                                 ~ Jeff Dufresne, Boquete, Panama

    * After just one session with Dr. Sunny Roe, I can confidently say the work she offers is profoundly healing. Kinesiology was used to go deep into the body’s knowing. She was able to skillfully “drill down” to specific dates / times in my life, tracing the stress (blocked energy) back to when it first settled into the organs/tissues.  Then, with my body’s permission, she was able to facilitate its release.  Try it for yourself.  Your body, mind, and spirit will thank you."

    ~ Joy Alexander, Boquete, Panama

THEATER WORKSHOP SERIES - Auditions will be held as part of our theater workshop series.  This session will begin at 10:30 by discussing the audition preparation needed from the production team including the Director and Stage Manager and their role in an audition.  Then we will talk about the actor’s role with some tips and ideas to navigate a successful audition.
Then we will actually go through the audition process to find actors and Directors for multiple  short scenes that will come together in the show Almost Maine.  Hope you can join us to learn about the process even if you do not intend to audition.
