  4. GEOLOGY FIELD TRIPS ARE BACK!

The 2024 geology field season resumes on January 30.  A list of field trips and classes is shown below. All trips and classes are free.  Field trips are led by Dr. Paul Myers, Emeritus professor of Geology at the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire.

There have been many changes in the content of these activities since last year.  Please  read their descriptions carefully. If you have been on previous trips you may want to repeat one or more of them this year. Note: Volunteer drivers are required on all field trips. All trips will be caravan style.

    Field Trips

     1. Local Boquete Field Trip (5 Hours)

A tour of the main geologic features of the Caldera River and the east side of Volcan Baru. The main purpose of this field trip is to acquaint you with the local geography and geology and help you to learn how to “read” the history of the landscape.

    2. The Volcan Baru Caldera at Volcan (6 hours)

This field trip investigates the structure and history of Volcan Baru with special emphasis on its caldera northeast of the city of Volcan. This trip requires vehicles that can safely negotiate poor roads.

    3. Jaramillo-Gualaca (5 hours)

The older terrain east of Volcan Baru is the focus of this trip. In this terrain igneous activity is related to the intrusion of magma along old faults.

    4. The Evolution of the Caldera River

A study of the ongoing processes river evolution. We will explore erosional and depositional features of the river valley, including landslides and other features that indicate recent surficial movement.

    Clases

    1. Volcanic Geology 101 (4 hours)

This class covers the basics of geology in a volcanic terrain with a 3-hour illustrated lecture and a 1-hour lab. The class includes the study of rock and mineral specimens with a hand lens.

  9. Greetings to the Boquete Community from Milky Way Creamery!

Many of you already know us from the Tuesday markets where we have offered our goat dairy products for over 10 years.  For those of you whom we haven’t yet had the pleasure of meeting, Milky Way is a farmstead goat dairy and creamery right here in Boquete. Although the goats are our main focus, we also have other animals, as well as some vegetables and ornamental plants.

Over the years, we’ve had fantastic results with our veggies and flowers by using a fertilizer that we've been producing ever since we started raising goats.  Right now we’re offering it to the rest of the community.

Our organic fertilizer is made using a mixture of fully composted (black soil), partially composted, and raw goat, duck, chicken, and green manure. The result is a mixture that's teeming with beneficial microorganisms that can support the growth of your plants for 6+ months. You can grow directly on it, or you can use it as the perfect soil amendment for your raised bed and potting mixes.

The 50 lb. bag is $12.50.

Piero will be in the Plaza San Francisco Plaza in Alto Boquete on Saturday, January 13th between 9:30-10:00 A.M., ready to load up your vehicle.  He will be parked across the street on the south side of the plaza.  You will see our red Toyota SUV as you turn off the main road.

If you are interested in purchasing a bag or have any questions, please let us know via email, or call Piero at 6481-6397. In other occasions we have sold out, so please do reserve or call us before you head out - we'd hate for you to waste a trip!

Finally, if you are interested in purchasing a carload of bags (12 or more), we offer complimentary delivery within the Boquete area.

    Testimonials are below.

    Best wishes to you all,

    Piero and Adriane

“We have known Piero for several years and are quite impressed with his operation.  Personally we love his goat milk and cheeses. We also utilize his composted manure to help grow our worms for their organic worm casing fertilizer.  We feel he produces an excellent product and would encourage others to try it.”

    Ron Miller

             Finca Santa Marta

I am an avid gardener and have used Piero's goat berries for the last 2 years. I usually spread them in early rainy season. The growth, vibrancy, health and flower production is fantastic. Far superior to anything I have used on the gardens in the 14 years I have lived here.

“Piero's goat manure is a great addition to my organic garden. I've never had such great veggies in my life. Very rich in nutrients! I am very pleased and would recommend it to anyone who wants a super healthy garden.”

    Annual Meeting

This will be different from our usual meetings! The Council will vote to confirm the new slate of officers, and Dr. Rod Gottula and Dave Nichols will be soliciting suggestions from the public as to where we should focus our energies.

Are you passionate about delivering hospice and palliative care in Panama? Do you have ideas for how BHH can improve our services and reach more people in need? This will be a great opportunity to share your thoughts.

We'll be putting our current services under the microscope and discussing how we can make them more organized and efficient. Our Community Outreach group has been making a big push to get the word out to the Panamanian community about our services—how can we better those efforts? There also appears to be a new emphasis in Chiriquí to improve the province's palliative care system. How can we collaborate with others to maximize the services available to the local community?

We'll also take a broader look to the future as we develop our three-year plan. What services do we want to keep providing? Are there any we wish to discontinue? Do we want to develop any NEW programs?

Your input is invaluable to us, so please come and share your ideas. If you cannot attend in person or via Zoom, feel free to send your thoughts directly to our president at rodgottula@gmail.com. If received in time, they will be included in the meeting discussion.

Together, we can chart a future for BHH that benefits everyone in our community. Thanks to all of you for your dedication to BHH, and we hope to see you at the January meeting!

Final preparations for Boquete Flower and Coffee Fair

    Card image

Details are being finalized for what will be the new version of the Boquete Flower and Coffee Fair, which will open on Thursday, January 11.

The directors of the fair board said that there will be many attractions of a cultural, folkloric, artistic and artisanal nature.

The president of the board said that they are conservative in the number of people they expect to receive, but they estimate that it will be around those who came last year, about 180 thousand people.

He added that on January 10 there will be an inspection by firefighters of the premises that use gas for cooking.

Guests from El Salvador, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Chile will participate in the fair.

This event opens the calendar of fairs nationwide and will run until January 21 in the tourism sector of Boquete in Chiriquí.

The La Chorrera International Fair will also take place in January.
