Alert: March 19 Demonstrations
More than 20 labor unions plan to demonstrate and operate roadblocks commencing Tuesday, March 19 at 7:00 a.m. and concluding Wednesday, March 20 at 7:00 a.m. Since the beginning of March, several regions of Panama have experienced protests and temporary roadblocks, notably in Tumba Muerto, Howard, San Isidro, Centenario Road (near Merca), Penonomé, Coclé (near Aquilino Tejerira Hospital), Cinta Costera, Avenida Balboa, Las Villas, Arraijan, Green City Panama Norte (also known as Corredor de Los Pobres), Corredor Sur (in Llano Bonito), San Antonio (in San Miguelito), Brisas del Golf (San Miguelito), and Via Cincuentenario (in San Francisco). There is a possibility these locations and others may face similar disruptions March 19.
While most demonstrations are non-violent, the Panamanian National Police have used tear gas and/or riot control munitions in response to demonstrations, particularly when roadways are blocked, or in cases of aggression against the police.
Actions to Consider Should Demonstrations Occur:

Boquete: Politics in Paradise
Eight candidates are competing for the Mayor of Boquete; among them is the current mayor, Joswar Alvarado. Boquete, the definition of paradise, is nestled between the imposing Central mountain range and the Caldera River. Despite the countless benefits of this region of the country, the challenges are also evident. Boquete has two seasons: windy season and rainy season. The wind blows, the rainbows never end, and the bajareque sprinkles both the plants and the residents, in an average temperature of 22 degrees Celsius or 72 degrees Fahrenheit, that heat up to 28 or 82 at times, and overnight cool down to 16 or 61. Easy numbers to remember if you want to be Celcius/Fahrenheit educated. All of this is accompanied by the presence of strawberries, flowers, and the intoxicating aroma of coffee, in an environment of invaluable protected ecological areas. Boquete is coffee country and the tourist capital of Panama. This vibrant tourist area is in the district of the province of Chiriquí, where natural beauty intersects with the daily life of some 25 thousand inhabitants.Currently an intense political battle for municipal leadership is taking place. Eight candidates are competing for Mayor of Boquete; among them is the current mayor, Joswar Alvarado. In addition to Alvarado, who was nominated by Realizing Goals, competing are: Emigdio Walker, candidate of the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD); José Montenegro, for the Panameñista Party; Eduardo Rodríguez, from Cambio Democrático (CD); Boris Bloise Navarro, from the Another Path Movement. While, through free nomination, the following are presented: Roberto Sicilia, Luis Rovira from the Vamos Coalition and Tomás Ruiz.
Thus, in the mountains of Boquete, where the valleys are dressed in green and the air is filled with the sweet aroma of coffee and flowers, the political campaign is in full swing. With an electorate of approximately 17 thousand citizens, this paradisiacal corner is preparing to define its destiny in the next five years. Meanwhile, the current mayor maintains that Boquete's economy and tourism have improved during his term and is seeking re-election to keep these projects in the district. “I believe that the five-year work deserves to continue, since there are still challenges to overcome in terms of aqueducts and waste collection,” he said.

Dear friends of Boquete Health & Hospice,
We have now started our journey into 2024. Our two-year planning is underway. We are looking for a new building that we can call home that will allow us to establish a presence in the community in addition to centralizing our equipment loaning process.
We continue to look for new volunteers who can help us increase our hospice presence in homes, but at the same time, not overload our volunteers.
The leadership team has begun to make inroads into the palliative care system in Boquete in hopes of developing a more collaborative relationship to benefit those patients we bring into our care.
Help us make 2024 a great year of growth and service to our community!

On February 29, the first Hospice and Home Care training was held for 20 volunteers who are interested in working with either hospice or home-care patients.
These people are the core of our team as we return to helping patients in their homes. They learned about BHH policies, patient-handling skills (involving beds, wheelchairs, and walkers), what “hospice" and "palliative care” mean in Panama, patient assessment, volunteer safety, and handling diversity and communication issues. Thank you to Bev Tyler, Dr. Rod Gottula, and Liz Baze for their presentations during the training.
Thanks also go out to the Bed Team (Sally Zigmond and Jeff Flynn) and the Equipment Team (Kat McKay) for helping provide the necessary equipment for the training, and to the Ambassadors (Dan Jampole) for helping with set-up.
Kudos to this new team for an outstanding professional program and a job well done.
BHH Awards Student Scholarships
On February 6 the Scholarship Team met with applicants and two students were selected to receive a scholarship award of $250 per student for both semesters in 2024.
The first recipient is a nursing student. She has completed 2.5 years of education and will be starting her sixth semester in March. She is currently studying at UNACHI in David. On completion of the upcoming semester, she will need to complete one more year of classes and one year of internship. She is leaning toward working with children, but is also interested in helping cancer patients. She is so excited about volunteering with BHH that she is hoping to do some of her volunteer hours before she returns to classes on March 18. We feel that she will be an incredible nurse and that our patients will appreciate her caring.
The second beneficiary is a fourth-year medical student, who will be starting his ninth semester this month. He is studying at the University of Panama in Panama City and expects to graduate in 2026. He is leaning towards specializing in pediatrics or gastroenterology, but with rotations to complete, he hasn’t made a final decision. He lives in Boquete when not attending classes. He has volunteered at Amigos de Animales, various nursing homes in Panama City, and various volunteer groups that specialize in helping families with patients in the hospital.
The team is so happy to be able to assist these students in completing their medical training.
Great Turnout for Being Prepared Workshop
We had a great turnout of more than thirty people for last month's two-hour Being Prepared workshop, our first of 2024. A big thank you to our wonderful presenters:- Kelly Honyak, retired intensive care RN, BHH member, and CPR instructor.
- Penny Barrett, long-time resident of Boquete
- Charlotte Lintz, retired intensive care RN and geriatric nurse practitioner.
- Denese Rogers, volunteer liaison to the US Embassy in Panama City.
- Oliver Candanedo, David-based attorney (who answered questions for 20 minutes after the workshop!).
Our thanks as well to our greeters Kay Wade, Cat Vann, and Kat McKay. These workshops impart a wealth of information that can't be found online. If you have never attended a Being Prepared workshop, or it's been a while, follow our page where we announce all our events, and see you at the next one!

The general meeting presentation for February was "Yoga for the Rest of Us” by Celeste Mendelsohn. Yoga is everywhere these days: gyms, studios, parks, even on surfboards and mountaintops. All the hype that seems to go with the get-fit yoga lifestyle is exhausting, frustrating, and honestly—expensive! What about the rest of us? Is yoga for us?
Celeste Mendelsohn is a yoga therapist and meditation instructor whose work focuses on the journey to healthy aging, which involves a better understanding of how stress and anxiety affect us, and how the lack of movement and regular exercise creates a lot of the “issues we have in our tissues.” She has a passion for helping people to feel more at home in their bodies and comfortable with their thoughts. She shared how she was drawn to yoga and ultimately became an instructor and therapist.
The group had a lot of fun as Celeste led them through a series of basic techniques and exercises that help people relax, feel better, and sleep more soundly. The techniques she taught were easy to do and did not require any special equipment, mats, or clothing. She proved that yoga is indeed for everyone! She led the class with humor, wisdom, and compassion. She is a fantastic teacher. Celeste let us experience that Yoga is for all of us!
Celeste will be teaching several programs in March at the Club Santa Lucia that are free to the public. Keep an eye out for the posting of the schedule of events.
Thank you, Celeste for a wonderful presentation. Everyone left with a better understanding of yoga and how important it is to KEEP MOVING!
Hospice Services are Back and We Need Volunteers!
In the past few months, BHH has resumed hospice care and home visits, and we're ready to expand. We will resume providing rides to medical appointments, providing relief to caregivers for short periods of time, running errands that don't involve going into the home, and providing meals for those who really need them.

Coffee in Panama
In 2004, a Central American farm left an indelible print on the coffee market. That year, beans revealing a distinct jasmine aroma won the Best of Panama competition. The Peterson family, owners of La Hacienda Esmeralda in the Chiriquí Province, submitted a lot from an unusual variety they’d found growing on their farm. Identified as the Geisha/Gesha cultivar originating in Ethiopia, the delicate, bright cup with its singular translation of high-altitude volcanic terroir would go on to break records for the highest scores and highest prices ever earned for beans at auction. The Lamastus Family would eventually carry the torch, inviting enthusiastic consumers — like wine lovers flocking to Bourgogne — to peek inside the insular world of coffee cupping.
“As a professional and well-trained taster, I cannot say Panama’s coffee is the best, but it’s special,” says Wilford Lamastus, Jr., a multi-generational owner of Lamastus Family Estates. “However, I can say that the international judges believe it’s the best, and the auction market has agreed,” he adds. To taste all the fuss, here are two ways to explore Panama’s coffee culture.
Panama City
Start the journey at Sisu Coffee Studio, the most sophisticated café in Panama City’s Casco Viejo, or old quarter. Opened by the Lamastus family, Wilford Jr. has spearheaded the estate’s mission to educate and embrace consumers. He modeled the minimalist vibe of the studio after cafes in Scandinavia. (Sisu is Finnish for perseverance). Visitors can order pour overs of Geisha (spelled with an “i” in the U.S., but with an “e” in Panama), savor tender pastries from chef Ariel Zebede, and book a cupping class, the coffee equivalent of a wine tasting.
Down the street, Zebede runs the diminutive A to Z restaurant which offers a seasonal multi-course tasting menu of Panamanian products, including coffee. This hidden, speakeasy-style restaurant accommodates 14 guests at the chef’s table on select nights. Zebede serves eight-day fermented Elida Estate Geisha with a dessert course and as a digestif.
Don’t overlook Casco Viejo’s elegant hotels for great coffee, too. The new Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo has a strong program, offering Panamanian French press in its guest rooms and Café Vera. Tiempos Cafe at the stylish American Trade Hotel serves pour over Geisha, while La Panaderia, the bakery and coffee shop at historic hot spot Hotel La Compania, sources from Finca Lérida in Boquete. If you want some really nice coffee, stop into the Haven Spa in Boquete pictured below. Coffee is always being brewed fresh.

This free workshop series is a great introduction to theater and all the skills and understanding needed to run a good production as part of a theater team. We will be talking through and getting some experience in all the different jobs that need to get done in order to make good theater, AND we are going to have many chances to get to know each other and have fun doing it!

Two Geology Field Trips are available!Monday, March 25: Volcan. This field trip investigates the structure and history of Volcan Baru with special emphasis on its caldera northeast of the city of Volcan. This trip requires vehicles that can safely negotiate poor roads. .--Monday, April 1: Gualaca and Caldera.The older terrain east of Volcan Baru is the focus of this trip.
