  7. Buenos Vecinos de Boquete October Family of the Month By Boquete Community Players, Friday at 10:18 AM in Tuesday Morning Meeting (TMM) Rate this topic Boquete Community Players Advanced Member Members 6 224 posts Report post Posted Friday at 10:18 AM Family of the month - October 2017 Meet Julia's Family Julia knows how to live with adversity. As a child she suffered burns that are visible even today. It prepared her for what was to come when she became a mom to Misael. Little four-year old Misael was born with cerebral palsy and other health issues that have stunted his growth. But Julia and his stepdad Luterio meet the challenges that come with with round-the-clock care for a CP child. They also provide love and support for their other two children, two-year old Nina and six-month old Carlos. The family lives in a rented room for a dollar a day and their sole income is from the work that Luterio can find at nearby farms. The work opportunities are, unfortunately, inconsistent so the family is grateful for the food assistance they receive from Buenos Vecinos each month. And they look to the Handicap Foundation (FPI) for help with some of their medical expenses, with physical therapy and social/emotional support. Together BVB and FPI address the critical needs of those who most require our help. Buenos Vecinos de Boquete depends on your support to feed and nourish families like Julia’s. If you would like to help families like this and the efforts of Buenos Vecinos de Boquete, your financial support would be most appreciated. DONATE ONLINE: http://www.buenosvecinosdeboquete.com/how-you-can-help We use PayPal for easy and secure transactions. IF YOU PREFER TO DONATE BY CASH, Please contact Louise Orr (panamaleo@gmail.com) for arrangements. When you make that important decision to help feed the less fortunate in our community, you have truly become a “good neighbor”. When you donate $360 a year or $30 a month (about the cost of a daily latte), your name will be added to our “Coconut Foundation” as an acknowledgement of your concern and generosity. Buenos Vecinos de Boquete’s wholesale purchase power enables us to furnish our clients more food than they could purchase on their own in the store with the same amount of money. Thank you!

  19. ATTENTION GARDENERS: Are you interested in some organic gardening classes? When I came to Panama, having grown gardens most of my life, I thought it would be no problem to do it here. Boy was I wrong. After many trails, errors and disappointments, I’ve learned a lot and want to share my knowledge with you. Here are a few things you will be learning: How to use the cycles of the moon for planting, trans-planting and pruning. How to make compost from your kitchen scraps and never turn soil with a shovel. How to make your own soil and what garden cuttings and leaves are good to use. How to identify a problem with a plant and what to do to solve it What products I use, that work, to keep it organic. Companion planting and what grows best where. What plants repel insects? Growing Panamanian herbs and their medicinal uses. How to “graft” a fruit tree. The care and feeding of plants, orchids and much more. Please email me privately if you are interested in participating and any questions you have. lvanderkar@gmail.com The first class will be Friday morning 9-11am on November 10th (which is a holiday) . This will be a "show and tell" complete tour of Finca Feliz for 2 hrs. You'll see what you're learning "in action". This class is jam packed with lots of information, so bring something to take notes and comfortable shoes (not sandals). From then we can set up a schedule of days and topics according to your needs. I will be at the Market Tuesday (as usual) to answer any questions or sign up anyone interested. A donation of $25 per person is appreciated. This will include free cuttings and plants to go home with. To respond, click the "reply" button or email me privately Lvanderkar@gmail.com
  20. doshombrespanama.com Hello Everyone, We hope that you are doing great this day. We are very excited to welcome the change of seasons, the paving of the destroyed streets, and the celebration of Panama's independence with civilization's oldest musical instrument group, the percussions. I always find it incredible how transformative this town becomes during the month of November. Costumes, reenactments, parades, music, and festivities fill the streets and the sound of independence can be heard for miles away one drum beat at a time. If you've lived here long enough then you already know that business as usual does not exist during this month (or the next). If you are new in Panama be patient, things will get back to normal sometime in January. For me, October tends to remind me of Autumn in Houston. A time in which the days got shorter and the nights got cooler. I can remember the smell of the furnace throughout the house as we turned on the heater for the first time since last winter. A change in wardrobe brought out that pea coat that's been stored away with the flannels and the turtlenecks. It seemed that the local playgrounds got a little bit quieter and as the merry-go-rounds would ominously spin (being pushed by the gentle Fall winds), the rusty metal would sing a Winters song. The season brought a strange foreboding that could only be described as an Autumn afternoon in Derry, Maine in 1986. Then again perhaps I read too many King novels as a kid. Be that as it may some of the fondest memories I had as a child stemmed from the Autumn season, particularly the food. Pumpkin, butternut squash, apples, sweet potatoes, sweet corn, sage, yeast rolls, deep fried turkey, and the list goes on and on. I reminisce this morning to share with you our upcoming Fall goodies. This year we are planning a fall festival of food that will transport you back to your childhood dinner table. Remember Rhubarb and Strawberry Cobblers and Sweet Potato Pies, remember yeasty dinner rolls and potatoes au gratin? As you might already know we are not locked in to any specific menu and have a blast week to week cooking food favorites from all over the world. In 6 years of doing this our menu literally changes every week and to date we still offer the widest variety of international food anywhere in Panama. Here is what your neighbors are saying: "We just ate your salmon cakes for dinner. They were wonderful. I think I will just buy 7 dinners each week and forget about cooking anymore! We are amazed at how you can create such a variety of food and all of it is delicious!" (Bonnie) "Wow. We had your latest batch of sauerkraut tonight, with Frank's bratwurst. I have to tell you, that was the best sauerkraut I've ever had! And that includes what I've eaten in Germany!" (Jane) "Just had my first serving of the Ziti....OMG! It's off the hook good!! You have no idea how glad I am to support your business....the food is always awesome!" (Michael) "My husband and I tried your food for the first time last week (gumbo and tikka masala) - so delicious! You've convinced us we can't be trusted to cook dinner on our own." (Leigha) If you'd like to get on our weekly mailer please click this link below. We send a menu out every week and would be honored to have you a part of family. Who do we appeal to? This is a great question as we don't appeal to everyone. Our business model appeals to those who are looking to take a break from the kitchen and not break the bank. We also appeal to single men and women who get hungry from time to time and don't feel like cooking. If you are on a budget and would like to do meal planning we are perfectly suited for you. We also appeal to husbands whose wives have left them here all alone in Panama. We appeal to anyone who is frustrated with sourcing ingredients and we appeal to those of you who miss the food from back home. We tend to also be popular with those who really want to get the most out of their retirement. Remember," We cook, so you don't have to". All of our meals are prepackaged and portioned for 2 adults. If you happen to have a teenagers appetite then you might enjoy an entire meal by yourself, but either way the convenience of heating and eating with no mess is hard to beat. Click below to join the 2 Guys & A Cooler Experience. Join By Clicking Here If you would like to take a peek at our menu we invite you to click this link. Our website is almost a year old and we have made some wonderful improvements to it. Take a look and see what all the fuss is about!! If you have any questions or comments I would love to hear them. Have a wonderful Day and remember that life's too short to sweat the small stuff! http://doshombrespanama.com/our-menu/
