  1. doshombrespanama.com Hello Everyone, We hope that you are doing great this day. We are very excited to welcome the change of seasons, the paving of the destroyed streets, and the celebration of Panama's independence with civilization's oldest musical instrument group, the percussions. I always find it incredible how transformative this town becomes during the month of November. Costumes, reenactments, parades, music, and festivities fill the streets and the sound of independence can be heard for miles away one drum beat at a time. If you've lived here long enough then you already know that business as usual does not exist during this month (or the next). If you are new in Panama be patient, things will get back to normal sometime in January. For me, October tends to remind me of Autumn in Houston. A time in which the days got shorter and the nights got cooler. I can remember the smell of the furnace throughout the house as we turned on the heater for the first time since last winter. A change in wardrobe brought out that pea coat that's been stored away with the flannels and the turtlenecks. It seemed that the local playgrounds got a little bit quieter and as the merry-go-rounds would ominously spin (being pushed by the gentle Fall winds), the rusty metal would sing a Winters song. The season brought a strange foreboding that could only be described as an Autumn afternoon in Derry, Maine in 1986. Then again perhaps I read too many King novels as a kid. Be that as it may some of the fondest memories I had as a child stemmed from the Autumn season, particularly the food. Pumpkin, butternut squash, apples, sweet potatoes, sweet corn, sage, yeast rolls, deep fried turkey, and the list goes on and on. I reminisce this morning to share with you our upcoming Fall goodies. This year we are planning a fall festival of food that will transport you back to your childhood dinner table. Remember Rhubarb and Strawberry Cobblers and Sweet Potato Pies, remember yeasty dinner rolls and potatoes au gratin? As you might already know we are not locked in to any specific menu and have a blast week to week cooking food favorites from all over the world. In 6 years of doing this our menu literally changes every week and to date we still offer the widest variety of international food anywhere in Panama. Here is what your neighbors are saying: "We just ate your salmon cakes for dinner. They were wonderful. I think I will just buy 7 dinners each week and forget about cooking anymore! We are amazed at how you can create such a variety of food and all of it is delicious!" (Bonnie) "Wow. We had your latest batch of sauerkraut tonight, with Frank's bratwurst. I have to tell you, that was the best sauerkraut I've ever had! And that includes what I've eaten in Germany!" (Jane) "Just had my first serving of the Ziti....OMG! It's off the hook good!! You have no idea how glad I am to support your business....the food is always awesome!" (Michael) "My husband and I tried your food for the first time last week (gumbo and tikka masala) - so delicious! You've convinced us we can't be trusted to cook dinner on our own." (Leigha) If you'd like to get on our weekly mailer please click this link below. We send a menu out every week and would be honored to have you a part of family. Who do we appeal to? This is a great question as we don't appeal to everyone. Our business model appeals to those who are looking to take a break from the kitchen and not break the bank. We also appeal to single men and women who get hungry from time to time and don't feel like cooking. If you are on a budget and would like to do meal planning we are perfectly suited for you. We also appeal to husbands whose wives have left them here all alone in Panama. We appeal to anyone who is frustrated with sourcing ingredients and we appeal to those of you who miss the food from back home. We tend to also be popular with those who really want to get the most out of their retirement. Remember," We cook, so you don't have to". All of our meals are prepackaged and portioned for 2 adults. If you happen to have a teenagers appetite then you might enjoy an entire meal by yourself, but either way the convenience of heating and eating with no mess is hard to beat. Click below to join the 2 Guys & A Cooler Experience. Join By Clicking Here If you would like to take a peek at our menu we invite you to click this link. Our website is almost a year old and we have made some wonderful improvements to it. Take a look and see what all the fuss is about!! If you have any questions or comments I would love to hear them. Have a wonderful Day and remember that life's too short to sweat the small stuff! http://doshombrespanama.com/our-menu/

Tuesday, December 12 – Boquete Medical Associates Tuesday, December 19 – Folk Dance Group. Tuesday, December 26 Tuesday, January 2 -- Jason Boss on cryptocurrency. In a world that is changing ever so much, today’s buzz word is cryptocurrency. When it comes to alternative forms of currency, unless you have a very experienced advisor, you will be burned. All of this information will be provided by someone who has been in the crypto game since its start in 2008. This is the expert advice you want in this new school digital age. 4. Today, Phil Bennett and I configured and tested the BCP Theater video projection and sound system - and everything is working. So this coming Sunday (not Monday) at 1:00pm, we will resume our weekly film screenings of mostly independent, foreign, and art house films. The new business which is taking over the Hex Room WILL NOT BE OPEN until some time in November, and therefore snacks and drinks will not be available for purchase until that time. Until the new business opens, the only option is to bring your own food and drink. Food and drinks will be allowed in the theater, and will be expected to clean up after ourselves. ---------------------------------- Upcoming Films: 11/5 - Rivers & Tides (2001 Documentary - Artist Andy Goldsworthy) 11/12 - Donnie Darko (2001) 11/19 - Sideways (2004) 11/26 - Queen of Katwe (2016) We don't charge admission, but do ask for donations to pay for audio/video equipment, and to support the Film Club program. ---------------------------------- Sunday, October 29 @ 1:00pm - Muriel's Wedding (Australia - 1995) 1hr, 46 minutes Ratings: 7.2 - IMDB, 78% (Rotten Tomatoes), 3.5/4 Roger Ebert - (R rating for sex-related dialogue and some sexuality) From Roger Ebert: When Muriel catches the bouquet at a friend's wedding, her friends are furious: "Throw it again - you'll never get married..." [Muriel's Wedding] is merciless in its portrait of provincial society, and yet has a huge affection for its misfit survivors. When Muriel is wounded, she retreats to her bedroom, drowning out reality with Abba songs. She is a large, big-boned young woman with unruly hair and a clueless look, and her friends from high school - swimsuit issue wannabes with promiscuous but grim sex lives - don't want her around anymore. They're planning a holiday on a tropical island and she will not enhance their appeal. Muriel's home life is cheerless, with an undertone of tragedy in Betty, her mother (Jeanie Drynan), a thoroughly cowed woman who is treated by her children like a domestic slave and by her husband Bill (Bill Hunter) as a household appliance who cooks and cleans. Bill is a failed politician who takes obscure Japanese investors to dinner in Chinese restaurants where he is owed free meals because of shady favors. His children are couch potatoes who sit, stunned, staring at the television. At least Muriel has had enough ambition to flunk out of secretarial school. Then life changes, suddenly, when Muriel comes into some money (a blank check from her mother) and a high-spirited new friend named Rhonda (Rachel Griffiths), who has an infectious grin and faith in Muriel's potential. 5. Meet Patches (AKA Joanne) This sweet girl was purchased by a concerned member of the community for $10 from a local family. She has been under ARF's care since... October 11. She had open sores, mange and is obviously malnourished. Here is the update on her from our awesome fosters: “Patches is doing great, finally getting frisky, eating well, wanting to play and is obviously getting stronger. All her open sores have closed so tomorrow she will get her first mange bath. I'm anxious to get those going. She is going to be beautiful.” If you would like to contribute to the care and recovery of Patches, please visit our site and donate. 6. Boquete Community, I am writing this after seeing Irma’s Announcement on News Boquete. She did not speak to me about this . I did not know she was to be the Speaker Tuesday at BCP. Come and listen and see if Irma and her group can help you. They will be speaking at the Tuesday Meeting at BCP on Oct 31 at 10:30. Come Early . There will be many people. After living here 12 years managing health problems … 2017… hit us with major blows and I really do not know what I would have done to help my husband… without Irma, her English/Spanish help, her knowledge of the Panamanian Health System and most importantly, her caring attitude. 9. Well, brace yourselves. When you came to enjoy soup last Friday. When you slip currency into my hand at the Tuesday Market. When you tuck a ball or two of yarn or a few yards of pretty quilt fabric into your suitcase on your way back from the States. THIS is what you've done. And it's high time you owned up to it. I have just sorted and packed up the latest batch of baby things for delivery to the clinics. 51 Blankets 34 Sweaters 64 Knit Caps And that's just this batch. When you add these figures to what we've already distributed this year, it adds up to around 250+ Blankets 350+ Sweaters 500+ Knit Caps 200+ Quilts Countless Pairs of Booties Do you know what this means??? It means newborn babies who come in to the clinics carefully and tenderly wrapped in newspaper (because that is all the mothers have) go home wrapped in a soft, warm, beautiful blanket. It means toddlers who are shivering in the reception area waiting to be seen come out from the exam room wearing a sweet little sweater -- and a sweeter smile. It means the nurses and doctors see greater compliance with follow-up visits because they can tell the moms that there are sweaters in all sizes so when the baby grows there WILL be something to fit. It means pediatric cancer patients get the softest of the caps when they lose their hair during chemotherapy. It is you who make it possible for us -- The Boquete Knitters and Quilters -- to do our part. We get to take your love and compassion and caring and make it tangible. Just thought you should know.
  10. Yella & Tom Rocking it out for Halloween! Come join the best party with great prizes and fabulous music! Sunday, October 29th, 5-8 pm at Big Daddy's
  11. I am back from Thailand and, unless someone else volunteers, will be facilitating this week's Wednesday afternoon drum circle. Place is the back terrace at Big Daddy's. Time is every Wednesday from 4:00 to 5:00 PM. The circle is open to all skill levels and is a great way to share community spirit. Bring a drum or some sort of rhythm noise maker. P. S. It's also fine just to come and listen. You get many of the health benefits simply by letting the rhythm infuse your mind and body. Hope to see you there. Mike Potts
  12. He is Rhino! He was rescued two months ago in a place called Las Tinajas, he was living in a house in terrible conditions, he and his two puppies were eating plastic, trash, dirt. They need all your support!. www.gofundmecom/helpanimalsboquete PLEASE DONATE www.gofundmecom/helpanimalsboquete You can see all the pictures and videos in our facebook: Facebook: Javier Madge Y Magaly Bustamante
  13. On behalf of the Boquete Knitters and Quilters, I want to thank the community for once again joining us to sample and enjoy the 21 soups at the Great Boquete Soup Fest. Thank you to all of "my" knitters and crocheters and quilters who baked cookies, served soups, accepted your cash and gave you soup bowls, and generally tried to keep me calm all afternoon. My thanks could not possibly be complete without mentioning Ruby McKenzie, Jakki Champ, and everyone at Amigos de Animales de Boquete! Your venue is almost (but not quite) as big as your hospitality and your heart. Lastly, to the community of Boquete, thank you. Thank you for caring, thank you for coming, thank you for contributing to our cause: providing soft, warm beauty to our neighbors' babies and children. I'm so tempted to say "you're keeping us in stitches", but I think I'll just tell you that you are, by your generosity, knitted together with us in love. 16. Just received this warning from our neighborhood vigilantes. If at night someone throws an egg against the windshield, we recommend for you to do the following. Keep calm and accelerate. Do not use the windscreen wiper. Never put water on the windshield when someone has thrown and egg on it. Accelerate quickly do not stop. This is a ploy of thieves and they are close by waiting for you to stop . Explanation. The egg and water, when they join, form a viscous substance like milk that will prevent you from seeing where you are going, blocking your vision as much as 90%, You will be forced to stop where you are and there you will be a victim of the thieves. This is the future intention invented by thieves. Please share it with your family and friends.
  17. The Boquete Health Fair is this Sunday at the Fairgrounds, and they will be using the BCP parking lot, so we will wait until the following week to restart our film series. Last week's Boquete Film Club screening was cancelled because of a sound problem. For the time being, we will rely on the theater's proven and reliable existing two-channel sound system rather than attempting to introduce a high-tech multi-channel system that is not yet ready for prime-time. Muriel's Wedding will be shown on Sunday, October 29, and will send out our regular, detailed notice for that film next week. November Schedule: 11/5 - Rivers & Tides (2001 Documentary about artist Andy Goldsworthy) 11/12 - Donnie Darko (2001) 11/19 - Sideways (2004) 11/26 - Queen of Katwe (2016) David van Harn, Curator Boquete Film Club
