Keith Woolford
José Abelardo is a well known citizen of Boquete. He posted these photos and video of the ongoing amplification of the road up to the summit of Volcan Baru on his FB page. He's calling on interested parties to gather in Parque Central at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, to travel up there at 9:00 a.m., to inspect, and understand the environmental impact of this work. This tailgate party doesn't look like sustainable tourism to me, anyway. Edited February 28, 2018 by Keith Woolford
Uncle Doug
I don't know why anyone would be opposed to improving this road. Access to the summit is necessary, and the road is difficult and dangerous.
TwoSailors
Interesting. There is a lot of new road and road improvements projects. The Wednesday hike this morning was up to the end of Palmira road at the rancho and 3 way split. For a mile or two, the road is under going grading work. Lots of big heavy trucks. The picture is at the top looking across the canyon down by Potrerillos where the roads will eventually link up. The truck in the photo is on the new road. Above it is a lot of drainage work. Keith Woolford
We can see that scar from our Mirador here. The road shown is the missing link of the Ruta Sur which will connect Potrerillos Arriba to Palmira Abajo.
Brundageba
Let's hope something green shows up before the heavy rains start. May is a big rain month and I see a lot of dirt there.
Moderators Moderator_02 Posted March 7, 2018 Moderators Share Posted March 7, 2018 Curious if anyone who attended this citizen action group event would be willing to report the results of this effort? Or maybe second-hand reporting?
TwoSailors
Heard some folks drove up the road in their 4 x 4. They said it was graded all the way to the summit and actually driveable! 1
Keith Woolford
This report is from the Mayor's FB page. Mayor of BOQUETE CHECKS IN THE FIELD THE COMPLAINT OF CHIRICANOS ENVIRONMENTALISTS Opposing views have been generated in the last few days by work being carried out on the road going up toward the top of the Baru Volcano by the Ministry of Public Works. The Mayor, with the desire to issue a criterion as the situation in the field, visited the area to learn first hand about the allegations of environmentalists from our province. It is expected, according to the Mayor Emigdio Walker Vasquez, in the next few days will be bringing together all parties involved, in order to learn technically the situation that the environmentalists have denounced. During the tour, staff and volunteers of MiAmbiente carried out a day of cleaning in the Baru Volcano National Park. TwoSailors
This is a great step in the right direction!
TwoSailors
Another plus, this road improvement will make it safer for climbers and make it easier to remove all the trash. Susan did this hike last year on an overnight and was amazed at all the trash at the summit. Well over 30 folks were camping out with no bathroom facilities! Come morning all the 4 x 4's showed up with a lot more people. They need to increase the fee to hike to the summit to pay for improvements and facilities and have a limit on how many people can go up.

The new road will make rescues so much easier than the old days when the road was nothing but boulders. Some of them were the size of a Volkswagen . Great step forward. No doubt there will be continued improvements....who knows maybe even a first aide station.
Keith Woolford
Environmentalists are not letting go of this issue and are initiating legal actions.
Uncle Doug
I don't understand the controversy. There already was a road to the summit. It was dangerous, but it was there and being used. It is a good thing that more people have access to a spectacular site. Presumably, these folks would oppose a road to Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, or Lake Louise.
