  1. She is in the Los Molinos community and we are not sure if she is currently pregnant, or has had her pups yet.  She needs to be seen by a vet, and we need to find a safe place for her.  If you can help, please contact us.  ARF supplies all food and medical needs for the rescues that are taken in by fosters.  We are fearful that if she does not have a safe place to go soon in the next couple of days that she will need to be removed from the property…..and then it is left to fate what will happen to her.

  3. The two reformed ferals – Lee and Mia

These two cuties were trapped back in July at the Boquete Country Club.  Since they were so young when captured, our foster was determined to try to domesticate them, rather than just having them fixed, and turning out two more cats.  Her efforts have been successful, and although still a bit timid, these two are more comfortable with people as each day passes.

Mia is extremely loving  and purrs like a locomotive.  Lee is a bit more reserved, but loves attention as well.

We would like to try to find a home that could take both of them in as they are very bonded.

  5. Thank you Boquete for joining in ARF’s very first Holiday Gift Bazaar for W.I.N.O.S.

Everything worked in harmony yesterday to give us a delightful afternoon for this fund raising event.  The good weather, fantastic artists, as well as a fabulous raffle gave a wonderful ambiance to the afternoon.  Each and every vendor donated an item to the raffle, for which we are very thankful.

Special thanks to Mike and Heidi Rehm of Mikes Global Grill for hosting our event.  Couldn’t have done it without the two of you and your staff!  And the wine tasting, very nice touch.

And where would a gift bazaar be without some of the best artisans in Boquete, who selflessly donated their time, a percentage of their profits and a raffle item to ARF?  Please know that ARF appreciates everything that you did.

Here is the list of all of the wonderful vendors who participated:

    StyleDots

    Cynthia Fletcher

    Margo Bryant Ahuna

    Mystic Colors

  6. Hello all,

Well, I thought we might get a bit of a break over the upcoming holidays, but this is proving not to be the case.

This is a plea to current, past, and future ARF fosters, as well as ARF donators, contacts, and the Boquete community in general for foster or forever homes for these animals.

In the past two weeks + there have been many animals brought to our attention that we need to find placement for, some needing immediate placement.  The most urgent are noted below.  Pictures are attached.

Cholo:  This handsome guy was brought to our attention by a gentleman in Alto Boquete.  Cholo had been hit by a car and they graciously offered to take care of him during the recovery period.  Once he was feeling better, however, Cholo made his great escape and was wandering the neighborhood (probably because he was not yet fixed).  Another rescue angel found him, and now he is recovering from his neuter surgery on Saturday.  Cholo needs to be moved as soon as possible as he needs to be monitored and his current environment is not ideal.  He has already removed his stiches from the surgery and had to be taken back to the vet to be re-stitched.

Elle Mae:  This young girl has been hanging around someone's house, but sadly they cannot keep her and she must find place to go by December 2nd.  They have fattened her up and gotten her spayed and now she is ready to make a great pet for someone with a fenced yard. She is very friendly, playful with other dogs and is a good watchdog. If you can give Ellie Mae a safe place, you'll be rewarded by the warmest welcomes every time you come home!

Vijeo:  This very sweet old guy was one of the dogs that was the inspiration for the founder of ARF to start the organization.  He was run over by a bus about 5 years ago and his legs are a little wobbly, but he still gets around quite well.  His many scars are testament to the rough life he has endured.  He has an interest in cats, in a friendly way, and pretends to be a "macho man" around other dogs, but in reality, he just ends up whining at them.  Vijeo is a senior dog in his final years, and we would like to find a loving home where he can spend the rest of his days lounging and receiving the love that he deserves.

Suzie:  This little girl is being surrendered by her owner.  She recently had 10 puppies and was discovered and brought to our attention soon after the birth.  On a daily basis, she was waiting by a garbage bin for scraps to be discarded as her "meal" for the day .  She was in terrible condition and still has a ways to go before she is healthy.  We helped the owner with food and supplements during the nursing, so she looks a bit better, but still needs some TLC and proper vet care.  She is a little feisty around new people, but once she gets to know you she is a love bug.  (picture is prior to being properly fed so she has some weight on her now).

When you are a foster for ARF, all food, medication and vet bill costs are covered by ARF.

There are also many more out there that we have not even had an opportunity to investigate so we are also appealing for bi-lingual people to help with investigations.  Our current volunteer base is overwhelmed with trying to keep up.

If you, or anyone you know can help with either fostering or investigations, please contact us.

  7. Hello all,

It is with a heavy heart that I have to inform you that Pepe/Marley had to be put to sleep this past Saturday.

Marley's health gradually started to deteriorate.  A Distemper test showed borderline results, but inconclusive, however, it was obvious that he was suffering from a neurological disorder as he was having seizures and was also having problems with coordination and balance.

Pepe was also in great pain, from what, the vet could not determine.

The decision was therefore made to send Pepe on his way to cross the Rainbow Bridge.

Thank you to the fosters who went thru an emotional roller coaster trying to help him.  They did everything in their power to save Pepe, from providing home cooked meals to spending nights sleeping with him on the floor to comfort him.

    Rest in Peace sweet boy.
  8. UPDATE NOVEMBER 11, 2016:  Alex escaped from the nice people who were looking after him, and has again been found.  He is not in an ideal situation right now, and we are looking for a safe place for him to stay.  If you can open your heart and home to this handsome guys until he finds a forever home, please contact us.

Alex was hit by a car on September 29th and wandered over to a nearby house.  These people have generously offered to look after him.  ARF took him to the vet to have his leg examined, and thankfully it was not broken, but a very bad sprain that will take some time to heal.  He was given painkillers, a vitamin shot, de-wormer and anti-biotics as he also has a urinary tract infection.  Alex was the most cooperative patient I have ever seen!  Not even a flinch when he was given his shots and even though this guy must have been feeling miserable and in quite a bit of pain, he still had a very loving and gentle disposition.  Alex is about 2 years old.  We believe he has an owner as he did have a collar on, but no one has come forward as of yet.  If the owners are not found, Alex will be put up for adoption.

If you would like to donate towards Alex's medical costs, please visit our website.

  9. Oct 29, 2016 - This little guy, was rescued by someone in David. He was taken to St. Francis animal hospital and was being treated for a very bad case of mange. Pepe's rescuer then took him to a foster home, which turned out not to be ideal.  ARF got involved and found a new foster home for him.

Nov 2, 2016 - Updated picture of Pepe (now being called Marley) in foster care.  The cone is to keep him from scratching under his chin, where he has some pretty bad open sores, and the socks are to lessen the effect of him scratching his body elsewhere.

Nov 9, 2016 - Marley has gained 2 pounds in the last week, but continues to have a very bad and persistent cough which is being monitored.  His vet visit on Monday revealed that he has tick fever, so he is now on antibiotics for that.  The vet bills are rising, and we could use your help again

All of the animals that we rescue come to ARF in various ways.  Rescuing animals is not just simply taking them in, feeding them and placing them in new homes. It is more complicated than that.   ARF is often called to assist with animals that have been abused, are in distress or have been neglected.  This includes a visit to the site or home where the animal is located, and an evaluation of the situation.  If an owner is involved, they are spoken to regarding the condition of their animal and if steps are not taken to correct the situation, their animal can be seized.

In many cases, animals are just found wandering the streets in a poor state.  We try to help as many of these animals as much as we can.  Often, it depends on if there is a foster available to take them in.

They can be in our care for only a few days or as long a year.  We are responsible for the health care and the socialization of each of our animals. This is necessary for a successful adoption.   All of this takes time, money and foster homes.
If you would like to donate your time, money or be a foster home please contact us.

  11. This beautiful girl is only 7 months old and has been living 5 of those months tied up to a chain.  Her owners have agreed to surrender her.  This is not an ARF dog, as she is not currently in our care, but I have been asked to post this.  She is not yet fixed but will be at the David clinic, and is looking for a loving home with a family that will treat her as part of the pack.

  12. At animal shelters and rescue groups across the world, there are an abundance of healthy senior pets looking for a special home to cherish them for the rest of their lives.  Although shaping the life of a youngster sounds appealing, giving a second change to an older companion can be equally rewarding.  They like to share quiet moments, are in most cases trained, and do not chew or scratch everything in sight.  Older pets have plenty to offer to adopters – not the least of which is love.

Here are the benefits of adopting an adult/older animal:

Calm Demeanor:  An adult animal’s relatively calm demeanor and less intense exercise needs make them the perfect match for a full-time working household or an older person seeking a friendship and love.  Older pets often make excellent, or at the very least, agreeable companions for other household pets as well.

Physical Demands are Low:  Fortunately, many senior animals are not as demanding as a younger animal.  Like any animal, they need quality time in the form of attention and exercise, but the length and intensity of exercise may not be as great.  Older dogs, for example, may prefer quiet walks to running or active play and will usually not pull you around on the leash or jump up on you.

Already Trained:  Adult animals often already know how to live harmoniously with humans.  In general, adult pets require far less supervision and less constant care which can make them ideal companions for people with already busy lives.  They may already be litter box or housetrained.

Size at Maturity is Known:  Senior animals, e.g. dogs, cats, small mammals, have already reached their maximum size and weight and therefore will not require additional purchases anticipating future growth needs.  For instance, a senior dog, unlike a growing puppy needs only one size collar, harness, lead, dog bed or travel crate.

What You See is What you Get:   With adopted older pets you will usually know about any behavior challenges or health considerations before you adopt.  In other words, there are no surprises.

Attached are some of our "seniors" who are looking for a permanent home.

Chomba - 7 years old.  Bingo - 6 years old.  Benji 6 years old.

  13. Romeo the Spaniel and Cholo

These two boys are each about 3 years old. They will get their vaccinations this week and be neutered in David on November 26. They are both good with cats, dogs, chicken and children, although Cholo has had limited experience with children.

They were found by Super Ivan's.  It was discovered that a family in the area was feeding them for about two months, but they can no longer take on anymore dogs.

They will be ready for adoption after they are fixed on the 26th.

  14. Hello everyone!  For October, the amount of monthly donations was $2443.00 and expenses totaled $2032.00.  Thank you to everyone who contributed!

We received another large contribution this month and we cannot thank the donators enough!  Thank you to the anonymous donor for the $1500.00.  This will go a long way in helping us catch up on some of our bills.

3 dogs found their forever home this month, but no cats were adopted.  If you have any friends or relatives looking for a pet, please direct them to our site or have them contact us, as we have many ready for adoption.

Please consider fostering an animal if you are able to do so.  When you foster an animal with ARF, we take care of all food and medical expenses – we just need you to provide a loving and protective environment.

If you are not in the position to foster an animal, please consider making a donation.  Any amount is greatly appreciated.

Bingo – Unfortunately bingo was cancelled for November 3rd.  We realized a bit too late that the date fell too close to all the holidays here in Panama.  This will take place again either in January or February.

Thanksgiving Lunch/Dinner! – Get your tickets soon….we already have a large group that will be attending.  On Thanksgiving Day (November 24th) we will be having a Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings.  Rather than slave in the kitchen all day, bring your friends and family and let us do all the work and help the animals at the same time!

As Thanksgiving is associated with a bountiful feast, we would also like to ask those attending to give back and bring a bag of food (Purina/Pedigree/Kirkland) or cat/dog toys to contribute for the many animals we currently have in our care.

The tickets will be $20.00 for adults and $10.00 for children.  The event will run from 3:00pm-5:00pm at the Animales Building and we will be raffling off two gift baskets with autumn themed goodies.  There will also be wine, beer, soda and water available for purchase.   Tea and coffee are included with the ticket price.

Holiday Bazaar for WINOS (Women in Need of Shopping)  – This is an afternoon event planned for November 30th at Mike’s Global Grill.  Some of the venders, to mention a few, will be JUJU Beads, Los Angeles Arts, Mr. Dog and StyleDots.  Thanks very much to Yolanda The Jewelry Lady for donating two items to be raffled at this event.  Time:  12:00N-4:00pm.

    Our new charges:

We came across two very sad cases this month.  Zembla (the white dog) was rescued near the airport in David.  Just skin and bones, she also has tick fever.  It will be a long road for this girl before she is healthy again.

We also took on Pepe.  He is also needing to gain some weight and has a horrible case of mange.  He also currently has a very bad infection and is being treated with anti-biotics.  As you can see from the photo, he has very little hair.   Once healthy again, he’s going to be a very handsome boy.

Update:  Now attached is a picture of Pepe  (now being called Marley) in foster care.  The cone is to keep him from scratching under his chin, where he has some pretty bad open sores, and the socks are to lessen the effect of him scratching his body elsewhere.

As you can imagine, these are not short-term recoveries.  We want to thank the fosters for taking them in……fostering saves lives.

You can make a donation thru our website or at the Tuesday market.  Mike’s Global Grill has also set up a donation box, so stop by and have a beer and help out Zembla and Pepe.

Donations will be counted for them towards our November numbers, as October’s numbers were closed off a few days early as our accountant is currently away.

Animal Law:  We have decided to provide a few tidbits from the Animal Law 70 here in Panama in each Monthly report until we feel we have covered the relevant information pertaining to domestic animals.  Let’s start from the beginning with the purpose of this law and some definitions:

The purpose of this law is to prevent, eradicate and punish mistreatment, neglect and acts of cruelty against domestic animals.

For purposes of this decree, the following terms shall be understood as follows:

    1. Domestic animal (Pet).  That species that lives or is likely to coexist with humans, posing a sentimental value, and whose life cycle takes place entirely in reliance on this.  Whether as pets, for work, for show, for sport, for farm production purposes or any activity related to humans.

    2. Acts of cruelty. Inhumane actions that create pain and suffering to another living being.

    3. Breeding Centers (hatcheries). Site intended for animal breeding.

    4. Euthanasia. Quiet death, without suffering and induced or performed by a qualified and licensed veterinarian.

    5. Exploitation. Commercial use of an animal species.

    5. Overcrowding. Stacking and agglomerating animals in conditions that threaten their physical integrity and health.

    6. Owner. One who has power, rights and duties of a pet.

    7. Dignified Treatment. Action taken to prevent pain and suffering of the animals during breeding, transport, capture, holding, quarantine, marketing, development, training and sacrifice, among others.

  16. Another update:

Good news for Zembla, her liver is not as bad as it looked. This means that I can start with the 3 weeks of doxicicline to treat the tick fever. She still needs the special Hepatic food and Hepatocan liver protection pills, combined with Hemavet to boost her blood values. She is also being dewormed. I'll keep you posted!

  17. Wendy

We happened to follow up on a call to visit a finca near Isla Verde one hour after this pretty girl had given birth to her pups.   She is now ready for adoption as all her pups are on their healthy way.  Wendy is about two years old and gets along well with other dogs and loves to play.  She is a bit on the quiet side – doesn’t bark much.  She is on the smaller-medium size, and weighs about 40 lbs.

Meet Bobby.   He is about 6 months old and a handsome little guy.  He is a very sweet and social dog.  Bobby was rescued, along with his mom and 5 siblings from the Palo Alto area from a man who was threatening to poison all of them if they were not removed from the area.

Judging from his mom’s size, Bobby will probably be on the smaller medium side once full grown.

  18. Scooby is looking for a loving home . He is getting fixed on October 30th.  He can only stay in his foster until the 1st of November and after that he has no place to go.  He is a very friendly boy and on the quiet side, although he does like to play with other dogs.  If you can offer him a place to lay his head for a while, please contact us on arf.boquete@gmail.com

  19. Indy (male Shepard) has a wonderful personality.   He loves to play and has a lot of energy. He loves going on long walks and always returns to your side when you call his name. He enjoys playing with other dogs and had no issues with any free dogs that are roaming. Indy likes attention and affection. He likes to lean against you and put one paw on your foot to make sure you stay close by.

Sasha is also a wonderful dog. She is quite calm.  She is very affectionate and loves being close to you and have you pet her. Sasha is also playful and she and Indy have a special bond since they have grown up together and have never been apart.

These two are best buddies and we would like to see them adopted together.  They are approximately 4-5 years old and have been fixed.  Ideally they are looking for a loving family with a large fenced in yard.

The previous owners have both passed away, and they are being looked after by a very nice family who would like to find a very good home for them.

  20. A kind gentleman picked up a dog laying on the side of the road today and took him to the vet.  He was obviously hit by a car.

It is a male Shepard mix found on Volcancito Road.  He said it is very calm and gentle and a very beautiful dog.  We suspect it has an owner, as it is in very good shape otherwise.

I do not have a picture, but will post it as soon as I receive it.

Please contact us if you know where this dog might belong.  arf.boquete@gmail.com
