This VERY sweet and gentle boy has been hanging around Big Daddy’s Grill for the past several days.  He is not neutered, and is in need of medical attention (ARF will take care of this).  It looks like he might have gotten bullied by some other dogs.  Nothing serious, but needs a vet check.

 They politely asked him to leave, however, he seems intent on making the outdoor area his place of residence. 

 ARF will supply food and medical attention for him, but if we can’t find his owner, he will be up for adoption.  He appears to be young (under 2 years) and a shepherd mix - probably weighs about 50 lbs.  I cannot emphasize how sweet and gentle this boy is.  He already seems to know after just a few short days that the kitchen is “off limits” for him.  The staff are being very kind and tolerant of him.  He would make an excellent companion with a few training lessons.....he seems to be very smart.

Hello everyone!  For May, the amount of monthly donations was $1169.00 and expenses totaled $2090.00  Thank you to everyone who contributed! 

In May 1 dog and 1 cat found their forever home. 

A total of 22 feral cats were taken to the clinic and sterilized thru our cat trapping program.  Please consider donating to this important program thru our website.  It takes approximately $300 per month to maintain.  Reference “cat trapping” and your donation will go directly for food and medical expenses for the ferals.

For June we are heading back to Mike’s Global Grill.  We will have more tables in place for this event so there should be plenty of room for everyone.  Thursday June 15^th is the date from 1:00pm-3:00pm.  Please give us your feedback.  We are working on various other venues and would like to hear your thoughts or suggestions. 

Come early, get your preferred seat and order some lunch.  Happy Hour drink prices will be offered.   Bring all your friends!  The more that attend the bigger the cash prizes!

Pancake Breakfast – We are doing it again with a bit of a twist.  This will be a combination adoption event and car wash.  Come for breakfast and while you eat and socialized your car will be cleaned!  Of course, we are accepting donations for this service.  Currently scheduled for August 12 – more details coming.  If you have tickets from the previous scheduled breakfast they will be honored at the door.

Monthly Adoption Event:  We are in the process of organizing a monthly adoption event to be held at the library, and possibly other venues in the future.    These will be held the first Saturday of each month.  Our first one is scheduled for July 1^st from 10:00am to 12:00N.  Come by and meet your new best friend!

On Saturday, May 20^th, two representatives from ARF spoke about what we do and the need for the community’s support.  We hope this will trigger an upsurge in people willing to volunteer, and also donations.  Our goal is to get more Panamanians involved with our mission, and slowly but surely, we are getting there.

We are always looking for new volunteers!

Come join us!  Volunteering can be a rewarding experience where you can meet people with similar interests.  We have a wide variety of options available where you can utilize your skills.  Here is a run-down of the current volunteer positions we are looking to fill.  If you are interested, please email us, or visit our site and complete the volunteer form.

Fosters!  Fosters!  Fosters!  We are ALWAYS looking for people to foster the animals we rescue.  Currently we have no fosters available so we are in a situation right now that if someone contacts us to help an animal we cannot assist.  When you foster for ARF, all we ask is that you can provide a safe and loving environment.  We provide food and any medical care needed.

We are looking for reliable bi-lingual people to help with rescues.  Sometimes it is just a matter of educating the owners on the proper care of their animals and the situation improves.  Other times it is an obvious case of neglect or abuse that we must pursue.

Fundraising committee:  This is a fun committee where ideas are brainstormed about possible upcoming fundraisers and planning our usual events.

Represent ARF each week at the Tuesday market:  Help with set up and tear down of the ARF tent and the handling of the animals we bring to show for adoption.  Also, answer questions from the public regarding ARF and our work.

Do you know what you’re feeding your animal?  I watched an interesting movie on Netflix the other day.  It’s an investigative expose on the inner workings of the commercial pet food industry and how it has largely gone unchecked.  The name of the movie is “Pet Fooled”.  Check it out.

Regulators have developed a special terminology for labeling packages.  For example, any product containing the word “dinner”, “nugget” or “formula” only have to contain 25% actual meat.  Any product labeled “with” only has to contain 3%, and anything labeled “flavor” such as “chicken flavor” may contain little to no meat.

Featured Dog – Wendy is about two and a half years old and gets along well with other dogs and cats and loves to play.  She is a bit on the quiet side – doesn’t bark much.  She is on the smaller-medium size, and weighs about 18 kg or 40 lbs.

Featured Cat - Tanya

Tanya is an adult female cat, approx. 6 years old.  She would make the ideal companion.  Being older, she has a mellow and mature personality and doesn't need to be entertained like a kitten.  She does not get along with other cats and would prefer to be the only house cat.  She is looking for a lap to “cuddle” on.

The Cat Lady of Jaramillo

I first met Ilsia and Gabriela at the April Los Animales spay and neuter clinic when it was brought to my attention Ilsia had 39 cats. Yes, 39.

These were not all Ilsia’s cats to begin with. She is very compassionate and people knowing this would drop unwanted or found cats at her property.  

Gabriela is a young adult who persuaded her elderly aunt that she needed to have these cats sterilized because before long she would have even more.  At the April clinic she brought two females.  That was all she could afford to sterilize and transport. 

I visited her home and saw that the cats were well cared for, but realized she needed assistance. 

ARF provided cat food and prepared a plan for sterilizing the cats. With the help of Gabriela and her boyfriend Carlos, 8 cats were brought to the May clinic.  We will continue to bring additional cats to each clinic as finances allow.   Gabriela and Carlos are socializing the kittens and finding them homes.  The older cats are ferals. 

ARF is seeking donations to construct a simple structure to shelter the cats, provide food and sterilization fees.

·         Food Distribution Coordinator: Keep track of those that need assistance with food and arrange for food delivery.  It would be preferable if you are able to store the food at your residence.

·         Email Administrator: We are looking for someone to take over the ARF emails.  This requires someone who can become familiar with the ARF protocols, and communicate this to volunteers and the general public.

·         Social Media:  We are also looking for someone to post on social media.  This would include our event flyers, animals for adoption and special pleas.

We were contacted by a gentleman who has come across this dog.  If you recognize this dog, please contact ARF.

My wife found a stray dog this afternoon that came to our house. She is a black labrador maybe 3 or months old I think. All black apart from some brown on her feet. She seems very well fed, house trained and responds to sit in English. No collar

Consider inviting one of these great animals into your life.  Here are some of the animals ARF currently has up for adoption.

Sasha is approximately 1 year old (5/17).  She is a calm, quiet and mild mannered dog.  She enjoys playing, but for her age is not an overly active dog.  She tends to be on the quiet side is content to go off and be on her own with a toy.  Not that she isn’t social, she is, but she does not need to be entertained.   She is also very affectionate.  She weighs 10kg or 22 pounds.

Wendy

We happened to follow up on a call to visit a finca near Isla Verde one hour after this pretty girl had given birth to her pups.   Wendy is about two and a half years old and gets along well with other dogs and cats and loves to play.  She is a bit on the quiet side – doesn’t bark much.  She is on the smaller-medium size, and weighs about 18 kg or 40 lbs.

Shadow is approximately 2 years old.  She was rescued with a bad case of mange, but as you can see, she is a beautiful girl now. 

She is learning basic commands and loves to play with other dogs.  She loves people and is a big “kisser”.  She does not like to be alone, but is fine in a crate.  She loves all types of food, including fruit and liver treats.  She is becoming a very good watch dog.

ZsaZsa is a 2 year old female that is spayed and vaccinated. She can be a bit shy with people at first, but not in an aggressive manner.  She gets along with other cats as well as dogs.

Hello all!

This dog has been spotted in the Casa De Montana neighborhood.  The dog seems to be well fed, but it was hit by a truck recently and seems to have a gimpy back leg.

It is wandering the streets, and we are wondering if there is anyone who knows who this dogs belongs to - or if it is just a "neighborhood" dog going house to house for food.

We would like to take this dog to a vet, but no one can seem to contain him so that we can pick him up.

In April 3 dogs and 1 cat found their forever home.  We currently have a dog that needs immediate placement if anyone is willing to open up your heart and home.  He was recently hit by a car and needs a place to recover.  We really have no alternatives right now – fosters are few and far between.  When you foster for ARF all food and medical expenses are provided by us.

We have recently come to find out that there is someone who has been making donations online to ARF (or so they thought) on a monthly basis for the past 2+ years.    They assumed we were receiving the funds and the sad truth is we were not.  We can only come to the conclusion that this person made an honest mistake and selected payments to go to an organization with a similar name to ours, or they are victim to a scam. 

Please always go thru the ARF website to make your online donation or to a person you know here in Boquete as being associated with ARF.

We recently applied for and were told we were approved for a grant with SPCA International.

   The funds will come later in the year as they have a long list of applicants to process.  From what we can determine, we are hoping it will cover at least one month of our usual expenses.

Hoedown recap:  As last year, this year’s event was also a success!  Thanks to everyone who attended.  The food was delish (thanks Sherry, Anita and Debby), the music great (thanks Stone) and thank you Cowboy Dave and Judy for getting things going on the dance floor.  Thanks also to all the other volunteers who helped pull this all together.

Do you like dogs, but can’t have, or don’t want one full time?  A few of our animals are very timid and need help with socialization.  What would that entail?  Taking them for walks, bringing them into town where they can experience being around different people and smells.  If you are interested in helping out, even if for a short stint, please contact us.

If you are looking for a house-trained female couch potato, Benji is the one for you.  She has been our longest term foster at three years so she really needs to find that forever home.  Benji is low to medium energy level.She is a bit hard of hearing and has an old leg injury, but gets around just fine.   She will need a fenced in yard.  Benji is about 7 years old, 45 pounds, and has been spayed and is up to date on shots.  She loves to chase laser lights and walks well on a leash.  Benji can have some issues with other dogs, so it would be best if she could find a human companion(s) that she will be completely dedicated to.

Missy was abandoned at some point and came to her fosters hungry, thin and very sick.  She has responded to them with loyalty and love.

Missy is extremely affectionate and very social. She is a quiet family dog and very well behaved with children of all ages.  Missy does not like to be alone for long periods of time and prefers to be around others.  She is gentle and responds well to kindness.  She enjoys walks and treats, especially little pieces of hot dog for which she will perform commands and take the meat carefully from your hand.  She responds to “sit”, “stay”, “down”, “shake paw” and “no”.  She will walk nicely with you and whimpers when she needs to go to do her business. Missy is afraid of the water hose and sprinkler and she will do anything to escape it.  She does not like the blanket in her kennel to even be slightly damp. She likes to play with some of the smaller dogs in the neighborhood and will hide from the more aggressive ones.  Missy enjoys sleeping in her kennel at night where she feels safe. Missy is approximately 2 years old and weighs 38 pounds.  She is now healthy, has a lovely personality and will make a wonderful addition to you family.

Thanks to everyone who attended and to all of our great volunteers!  Here are some pictures from the event.

Hello all,

We are urgently seeking foster or forever homes for some of our animals.  The current fosters are leaving for extended periods of time and we need to find a new place where they can lay their heads.  If you can help, please contact us.  ARF provides all food and medical care (if needed) for our animals.

Phyfer:  Phyfer is a beautiful dog.  She is about 5 now.   
Tall and slender, with a sway in her walk and a beautiful face and voice Phyfer is now ready for her permanent home.

Pearl:  Pearl is a six year old, spayed and vaccinated female.  She is an indoor and outdoor dog. She is calm and sweet, gets along with cats (but not other dogs) and likes to be with her humans. She walks well on a leash, comes when you call her and is an excellent watch dog.

Rayito:  You can truthfully say Rayito is strikingly cute, VERY playful and a bundle of energy.  He would be an exceptional soccer player and also gets very excited about bugs, crumpled tinfoil and pull toys-basically anything that moves or that he can move.  He is fully litter trained.  Rayito is about 5 months old. Sunshine

She is a bit shy, docile but very talkative.  She loves to be stroked and scratched and has a good motor.  She is litter trained, likes to go outside but is mainly an indoor cat.

Meet Mister. He is so lovable and snuggly. He really loves his head scratches or simply just lying next to you on the couch.  He is an older cat and likes to sleep but call him and he will be happy to come out to say hi. He has been fixed and has his vaccinations. He will warm your heart with his affection! He wants a home with other cats but he would be fine just by himself.

Miss Molly is a five year old affectionate indoor/outdoor cat who is litter box trained.  She needs to be the only cat in the household because she is territorial.  She is independent and low maintenance, not requiring a lot other than a home to call her own and a family to love her.
