  2. Pearl is a six year old, spayed and vaccinated female.  She is an indoor and outdoor dog. She is calm and sweet, gets along with cats (but not other dogs) and likes to be with her humans. She walks well on a leash, comes when you call her and is an excellent watch dog.

We need to find a place for her by May 15th as her current foster will be travelling.

  4. We have received information that there may be someone out there killing cats in the area near Radio Chiriqui (possible poisoning and blunt force trauma) and there are several cats in the area that have not been seen for some time.

Please be vigilant with your animals (especially cats by keeping them inside if possible).

  5. At the end of March, about to give birth, Chomba was voluntarily surrendered by her Nobe family with the understanding that she and her puppies had a better chance at survival if she received proper food and medical care.  She had previously lost one litter and the family was heartbroken about that.  Chomba’s family shared with ARF volunteers that they love their dog, understand that she needs better care, but they simply do not have the means to do so at this time.  So, ARF agreed to step in to lend them a hand.  This led to our current situation, which has turned out to be an emotional roller coaster for the family and the volunteers.

    Sad consequences

The day Chomba was removed from her home the family confided that they were very worried.  Victor, the youngest boy told us Chomba had been vomiting and not eating for at least two days prior, something they had not observed during her previous pregnancy.  She was taken immediately to our local vet who announced that she was already having contractions and was likely to have her puppies that evening.  We quickly installed in her temporary foster home and awaited the arrival of the puppies.

The next day when she still had not delivered her litter, she was rushed to a vet in David where there are emergency facilities.  It was there that we were informed that without immediate surgery, all of them, puppies and mother, would be lost.  An hour later the vet emerged from surgery to inform us that the puppies had likely been dead since the previous evening, but that luckily Chomba had survived the surgery.  When asked why this had happened, the vet explained “the father must have been at least twice her size.”  She and her puppies were the victims of indiscriminate breeding, the consequence of not spaying /neutering.

    A temporary “silver lining”

After that tragic event and informing the family of the fate of the puppies a small silver lining appeared.  Someone called ARF to let them know that six orphan puppies had been rescued after their mother was apparently poisoned.  It seemed like a natural solution, a mother dog without puppies, and puppies without a mother.  With approval from the vet who performed the surgery, the puppies were introduced and Chomba was successfully nursing them.  That lasted until several of Chomba’s surgery sutures came undone.  At that point she was no longer able to nurse.  (A pic here of Chomba and the puppies nursing)

Fortunately for the puppies, she was able to give them enough nourishment that they are now thriving on their own and beginning to eat soft food.  Sadly for Chomba, however, she has continued to struggle to recover from the surgery.  The past two weeks have seen repeated visits to the vet for re-suturing, despite wearing a cone, having her stomach swaddled in bandages and constant supervision.  This is a sad situation; one which we hope ends happily, but it illustrates the efforts that ARF volunteers are willing to go to help an animal in need and the emotionally draining nature of this kind of work.

What is “Soft Fostering” - Outreach and Education through Family Support

The agreement between ARF and Chomba’s family was, and still is, that taking her from their home would be a “temporary rescue.”   When she is well enough her return will be considered a “soft foster.”  What this means is that once back home, Chomba and her family will receive continued support from ARF in the form of food, wellness checks and consultation, and any follow up medical care.  In return for ARF’s support, the family must agree to follow ARF recommendations for feeding and appropriate care, with the understanding that failure to do so would result in Chomba being removed.

There have been questions raised about the effectiveness of “soft foster” situations.     Yet, the fact remains that there are simply more animals that are neglected/abused and in need of good homes than there are fosters or adoptive homes available to fill the need.  Therefore, ARF considers “soft fostering” a viable and preferable alternative in the cases where it is an option.   Such an option exists when a family shows they are willing to give adequate care, but need support in doing so.  It is the organization’s view that giving that kind of support is ultimately better for the animal, and the community at large.  In many cases, it is just a matter of educating the owner on the proper care.

In this instance, as one of our volunteers pointed out, Chomba knows this family and they love her.   If we were to take their dog from them, with no promise of returning her, they would likely simply go out, get another puppy.  Without ARF’s support and training, that new puppy would likely suffer the same or worse fate than Chomba.   Instead, the desired outcome is that with adequate support, this family will have the opportunity to experience what it means to be responsible pet owners and avoid a bad situation for yet another dog.   Through ARF’s efforts to keep pets in their homes, families learn about responsible pet ownership through:

    ·         One on one conversations with volunteers about proper treatment, preventative care, and the Panamanian laws regarding animal welfare and owner responsibility

    ·         Access to resources in the community that help provide free or low cost veterinary care, in particular spay and neuter services.

    ·         Appropriate pet food support (too often pets exist on table scraps becoming malnourished in the process).  An added benefit to families of scarce means is that less human food being given to pets means more food in the bellies of kids.

We hope you will consider supporting Chomba, her family, and others like them in becoming responsible pet owners and setting an example for other families in their community.  You can do so by making a donation today, or better yet, by sponsoring a pet and its family on a regular basis.   Gracias!

  6. Hello everyone!  For March, the amount of monthly donations was $3,143.00 and expenses totaled $2,704.00.  Thank you to everyone who contributed!

A special thank you goes out to Joan J. and Margaret for donating bags of food and also Willeke and Nancy for donating bedding for some of our dogs in need of a soft place to lay their heads.

We came to be in a desperate situation financially this month, as our expenses have a habit of exceeding our donations.  We put out a plea, and we want to say we are extremely grateful for all the wonderful support.  Boquete is a very special community and we are also thankful that the support reaches beyond those who live here.  A special thank you also goes out to Jackie L. and Sandi P.

In March 1 dog and 1 cat found their forever home.  We currently have 23 dogs and 8 cats in our care.

10 feral cats were taken to the clinic and sterilized in March thru our cat trapping program.

On Sunday, March 19th we were contacted by someone who found a very sickly, skinny dog wandering the streets in Los Naranjos.  We called him Pluto and he was taken to a foster and a vet visit scheduled for the next morning.  He was drinking Pedialyte during the night and we were very optimistic.

Pluto tested positive for Distemper and unfortunately, had to be put to sleep.  Pluto was only about two months old.  From the condition of this pup, it was apparent that he had not eaten for quite some time.  This poor dog had a very rough and short life.  (see pictures of Pluto attached)

Much of what we do can be emotionally draining and frustrating but we press on because we do feel we are making a difference in some small way.  Everything we do can be financially draining.  Please help us financially by contributing to our cause.

    Bingo every month!

Yes, many of you asked for it and that’s what we are going to do.  April’s bingo will be on Thursday the 13th.  We will again hold it at Mike’s from 1:00pm-3:00pm with Heidi and Mike offering happy hour prices and remember………the more who attend, the bigger the cash prizes!  May’s bingo is scheduled for Boquete Brewing Company.

     Recap:  Pancake Breakfast/Adoption Event

Unfortunately  due to minimal ticket sales, we had to postpone this event.  We know people really enjoyed our event last October and were hoping for a sell out, however, due to another event in the community, we did not have sufficient sales.  We are working on a new date for this event and will let you know once it is firmed up.

Don’t miss it!  Our Hoedown will take place on Saturday, April 29th from 3-7pm at the Santa Lucia Club off Volcancito Road.  Menu includes pulled pork, baked beans, coleslaw, Greek salad, cornbread, haystacks and banana pudding.  Wine, beer, soda and water will be on sale.   There will be great country and western music by Stone, and line dancing led by Cowboy Dave and Judy.  Tickets are on sale now for $20 per person.  Get them at the Tuesday market at the BCP or Mailboxes Etc.

We are in desperate need of foster parents at the moment.  Many people who are fostering right now will be travelling at the end of April and we currently need to find temporary homes for 3 cats and 3 dogs.  Please consider fostering an animal if you are able to do so.

When you foster an animal with ARF, we take care of all food and medical expenses – we just need you to provide a loving and protective environment.

The crunch time animals:  We need to find another foster or home soon!

Rayito:   You can truthfully say Rayito is strikingly cute, VERY playful and a bundle of energy.  He would be an exceptional soccer player and also gets very excited about bugs, crumpled tinfoil and pull toys-basically anything that moves or that he can move.  He is fully litter trained.  Rayito is about 5 months old. (3/17)  His current foster parent will be travelling for several months, and will need another place to say by the end of April.

    Sunshine

She is a bit shy, docile but very talkative.  She loves to be stroked and scratched and has a good motor.  She is litter trained, likes to go outside but is mainly an indoor cat.   Her foster is leaving the end of April.

Meet Mister. He is so lovable and snuggly. He really loves his head scratches or simply just lying next to you on the couch.  He is an older cat and likes to sleep but call him and he will be happy to come out to say hi. He has been fixed and has his vaccinations. He will warm your heart with his affection! He wants a home with other cats but he would be fine just by himself.  Mister needs a new home or foster by the end of the month also.

Pearl is a six year old, spayed and vaccinated female.  She is an indoor and outdoor dog. She is calm and sweet, gets along with cats and likes to be with her humans. She walks well on a leash, comes when you call her and is an excellent watch dog.  Pearl needs to find a permanent home or another foster by the end of April as her current foster will also be travelling for some time.

Susie is a sweet and very smart little Panamanian Bird Dog, very rare we are certain.  She is looking for an outgoing active partner; someone who is not a couch potato, but likes long walks and lots of play time. She needs another dog to play with. Susie is non-stop full tilt play.  She has lots of energy.  She is about 3 years old and is spayed.  Susie was rescued after giving birth to 10 pups.    Her foster is also leaving the end of April.

Phyfer is a beautiful dog.  She is about 5 now.
Tall and slender, with a sway in her walk and a beautiful face and voice Phyfer is now ready for her permanent home.
Phyfer’s foster mom is also leaving the end of April.

    Until next month…….

  9. Meet Sunshine.  She is a bit shy, docile but very talkative.  She loves to be stroked and scratched and has a good motor.  She is still young, quite playful and comes when called.  She is litter trained, likes to go outside but is mainly an indoor cat.  She is currently being treated for a skin condition that will need cream applied for about another week.  The current foster is leaving on March 28th and we need to find her a new foster, or a forever home…….we are running out of time.  Add a little sunshine to your life!

January and February were very costly months for us and has resulted in draining much of our financial resources (expenses exceeded donations by more than $1,700.00) and March is not looking any better.  We can only carry on our work if we have the funds to do so.  Please consider making a donation so that we can continue to help the animals in the Boquete and surrounding areas.   Please visit http://www.arf-boquete.com/donate.html and thank you for your support.

  12. There will be some kittens and two of the cats that were rescued from Volcan at the market tomorrow.  If you remember, there were 30+ cats tied up to trees, branches, poles, etc.  that have been removed from the residence.

There were 23 rescued adult cats, and 7 kittens.   Unfortunately, one managed to escape in the midst of the round up.  A group in David has generously offered to house these cats until homes can be found.

We are still in need of financial donations for this case.  Your contributions so far have greatly contributed to getting these cats on the road to adoption, but more is needed.  10 will be attending this month’s clinic to be sterilized.  9 have been fixed so far, along with their snap shots done and vaccinations given……not to mention the cost for feeding so many animals.

Unfortunately, due to the lack of ticket sales, we have had to postpone this event.

If you purchased a ticket and would like a refund, please present your ticket us at the Tuesday market.  Otherwise, your ticket will still be honored when the event is re-scheduled (we are currently looking at some time in May).

We apologize for this, but we could not justify holding this event with minimal ticket sales.

  15. Hi everyone,

We have a volunteer who is working with Celestino – if you recall he is the handicapped gentleman who we requested donations for food for his dog and cats.  He is a woodworker and we would like to supply him with an income for production of a craft project that we will be selling.  Proceeds will go to Celestino as well as ARF.  We are looking for donations of the following items:

Wood, of all sizes, but no presswood.

Wood glue – Multiusos XL Pegaucho

1 ½ inch brass or stainless steel phillips screws

    Fine mesh

1 to 2 inch round dowels

If you can help with this project, please drop your donations at the Tuesday market at the ARF tent, or contact us on arf.boquete@gmail.com to make arrangements for pick up/delivery.

Thanks so much for your support!

  16. With the help of a visiting volunteer, ARF is coordinating a few "touch training" sessions with a few people that would be willing to continue the practice with some of the ARF dogs that are currently being fostered.   These animals are quite timid and shy, and need help coming out of their shells.

What is “touch training?”  The “touch” cue teaches dogs that an approaching hand is not a threat and therefore does not require a negative response.  Many advanced behavioral issues can often be traced back to seemingly innocuous beginnings like a puppy reacting nervously to an outstretched hand or general human touch.

The key to avoiding the escalation of such issues is to desensitize the dog to things that might be considered scary (such as human hands) as early as possible.  Teaching the “Touch” cue is a great way of building that foundation and is a useful cue to teach both puppies and adult dogs.

“Touch” is also a great confidence-building exercise and can be used to help all dogs accept the approach of a human hand.

You would work with the dogs for 1 hour so.   Our volunteer would like to find a small group of people that can do the training 3 more times before March 25.

This is an excellent opportunity for people that have dogs at home they would also like to train. These will be simple sessions.  None of the dogs you work with will are aggressive.

She would like to try for
2pm this Saturday March 11.   The location of the foster is on Volcancito Road.

  17. Hello everyone!  For February, the amount of monthly donations was $2909.00 and expenses totaled $3817.00.  Thank you to everyone who contributed!

A special thank you goes out to our friend Steve who made a substantial donation, and Marian who held a fundraiser at La Villa to raise money for food purchases.

In February 7 dogs and 1 cat found their forever home.  We currently have 25 dogs and 8 cats in our care.

If you have any friends or relatives looking for a pet, please direct them to our site or have them contact us, as we have many ready for adoption.

Please consider fostering an animal if you are able to do so.  We are in desperate need of temporary homes for the many animals that the community is alerting us to and are having a very difficult time keeping up.  It is never our goal to turn away an animal in need, but we only have so many places to put these animals, and we need your help.

When you foster an animal with ARF, we take care of all food and medical expenses – we just need you to provide a loving and protective environment.

    Bingo recap:

After the unfortunate robbery at La Villa, we had to scramble to find an alternate location for our bingo.  Thanks to Mike and Heidi at Mike’s Global Grill for offering their place at the last minute!  Many participants commented that they liked the switch and also that they would like to see bingo held once a month.  We will keep you updated on these developments.

ARF Pancake Breakfast/Adoption Event-Sunday March 19th at the Animales Building 9:00am-11:00am.

Here we go again!  Our last event in October was very successful, so we are doing it again!  $10 buys you a stack of pancakes, bacon, fruit, juice, coffee or tea and a chance to meet some of the fine animals we have loooking for a home.  We will also be raffling off 2 spa inspired packages.  Tickets can be purchased at the Tuesday market, Mailboxes Etc. and at the door if we don’t sell out.

We also have our Hoedown coming up in April – keep your eyes and ears open for more details.

    Looking for a home

Susie is a sweet and very smart little Panamanian Bird Dog, very rare we are certain.   She is looking forward to finding her permanent home.  Susie was rescued after giving birth to 10 pups.

    Wendy

We happened to follow up on a call to visit a finca near Isla Verde one hour after this pretty girl had given birth to her pups.   Wendy is about two and a half years old (1/17) and gets along well with other dogs and cats and loves to play.  She is a bit on the quiet side – doesn’t bark much.  She is on the smaller-medium size, and weighs about 18 kg or 40 lbs.

Animal Law:  We are providing information on the Animal Law 70 here in Panama in each monthly report until we feel we have covered the relevant information pertaining to domestic animals and  Article 9 will be the last installment on this go-around.  Article 9 addresses the sale of animals.

    Article 9.

Trade of domestic animals is permitted provided that the exhibition and sale are conducted in rooms with adequate facilities for each species and that health regulations are met. Every natural or legal person may sell dogs and cats as long as these are at least two months old. The sale of domestic animals will not be allowed on public roads or highways.

    Until next month…….

  19. ASHA has escaped tonight.  Please call Karen on 6525-3160 if you see her.  One blue eye, one brown.

She has had two operations to be spayed, but for some reason it won’t stick.  She is at the end of her heat cycle now.  She cannot get pregnant, but she is obviously “looking for some love”.  These people have a fenced in yard and they still can’t figure out how she got out.  The live about half way up the loop on Volcancito road.

Please keep an eye out for her.  She is a very loving and gentle dog.
