  1. Susie is looking for an outgoing active partner. Someone who is not a couch potato, but likes long walks and lots of play time. She would love another dog to play with. Susie is non-stop full tilt play. She has lots of energy. She is about 3 and is spayed.

Susie was rescued after having 10 puppies.  She was travelling down the road each day to wait for people to dump garbage in the dumpster for her meals.  Thankfully we were made aware of the situation shortly after she had her pups and were able to provide all of them with proper nutritional meals.

  2. ARF is trying to assist financially with this case as we do not have anywhere to put these animals.  There are now several people involved in trying to find a remedy for this horrible case.  The person who is asking for help is the Corregidora of Volcan, Mariana Escudero.  It is believed that the woman who is “hoarding” these animals may be mentally ill.

30 cats (yes, 30) and one adult dog and one puppy have been found at a residence in Volcan.    All of the animals are tied up as you can see in the pictures.

There was also a closed cardboard box found with 10 kittens and no food or water.  They have now been removed.

We are trying to raise funds to get the cats tested for Feline Leukemia, as they cannot be placed with healthy cats if they are infected.  Also, funds are needed to spay/neuter and feed all of these animals until homes can be found.

If you are interested in helping out with this community effort, please go to our website http://www.arf-boquete.com/donate.html and indicate your donation is for the Volcan cats.

  4. Hi all,

We are urgently requesting dog food donations for one of our fosters.  They have 8 of our dogs and will run out of food tomorrow.

We have limited volunteers right now, and even fewer with transport.  Unfortunately we were not advised earlier, otherwise we could have made arrangements.

If anyone would be willing to drop off a bag of dry dog food (they currently eat Pedigree), please contact Javier on 6965-9423.

    Thank you!

  6. Hello animal lovers!

ARF is a Boquete community based non-profit organization dedicated to the care and welfare of domestic animals.  You can visit our site here to learn more about us:  http://www.arf-boquete.com/

We have grown tremendously in the last year, and we are actively seeking volunteers to help us achieve our goals.  See our mission statement here:  http://www.arf-boquete.com/about.html

We are currently seeking dedicated and motivated volunteers in the following areas:

Fosters, fosters, fosters!  We need all the help we can get in this area.  We do not have a shelter so we depend on those who can offer a loving and safe environment for our rescues.

People to transport animals to vet appointments – relocation to foster or forever homes.

Bi-lingual individuals to help translate promotional items to Spanish

Rescuers – those who are willing to investigate and speak with local people to determine their intention with their animals….do they need education on how to care for an animal(s) and assistance with food?  Or do they not really care about their animal(s)….and determine how to proceed from there.

Fundraising – we have a strong fundraising committee now, but always welcome more help and new ideas.

Administration – seeking someone who would be willing to take on the acquisition/foster placement and new home administration for all ARF animals.   This basically involves establishing and maintaining a relationship with the ARF fosters, interviewing potential adopters to determine if their home is a good fit for the animal and follow up visits.  This would also involve maintaining Excel spreadsheet related to this function.

A bonus for the animals:  If there are any dog trainers out there who would like to volunteer their time to help our rescues become more “socialized” that would be a PLUS!!!  Many of our rescues are often traumatized from the situations they are removed from and do not have basic commands mastered such as “sit” and “stay”.  They need to learn to trust and love again.

There will be a general meeting on February 16th (tentative as of now) and we invite anyone interested in volunteering their time to attend this meeting.  Please email us at arf.boquete@gmail.com for directions to the meeting and confirmation of the date.

There are so many animals that need our help!

  7. Meet Celestino.

Celestino was in a motorcycle accident about 12 years ago, and now is partially paralyzed.

He lives alone and does a bit of woodworking for a small income.

Celestino has two cats and one dog that he just adores and that mean the world to him but he struggles with providing food for them, and it is always a constant worry to him that his animals will go hungry.  He also has another cat that is hanging around looking for food, but he has been “shooing” the cat away as he didn’t have enough food to feed his own pets.

ARF was made aware of Celestino and his situation thru one of our volunteers.  We paid him a visit and provided food for his animals.  It was a very nice meeting; Celestino is a sweet and humble man who cherishes the companionship he has with his animals.

ARF will be trapping and having the stray cat fixed at the January clinic.

We are looking for sponsors for Celestino and his animals.  The cost of food per month works out to $54.00 for the cats and his dog.  We would like to find a sponsor for each month of the year.  Is there anyone out there willing to donate to cover February?

Part of ARF’s mission is to assist those who genuinely care for their animals but may not have the means to do so.  It is only thru your kind donations that this can be achieved.

Celestino is also assisted by the Handicapped Foundation (FPI) and Buenos Vecinos.

As ARF now joins in helping Celestino with his beloved animals, this represents a true community effort that has improved his life for the better.

  9. Tiempo was found roaming in the Alto Boquete area.  He is young, sweet, gentle, and comes to people easily.  When found, the tip of his tail was damaged and it had to be removed.  He also had a tumor on his private part and a testicle that did not descend that were also removed.  (Poor guy doesn’t have much luck in this area).

Tiempo’s tumor has now grown back and it has been determined that he needs to undergo 3 chemo treatments…..however, he currently has tick fever, so he needs to recover from this first.  The chemo treatments are $60 each and we are looking for donations to cover these and his other medical expenses.

If you would like to help Tiempo on his road to recovery, please visit our site and reference “Tiempo” on your Pay Pal donation.  You can also contribute at the Tuesday market.

  10. Update:   Ginger is in a temporary "holding area" (our last resort) where she is on her own and has little socialization.  We are urgently seeking a temporary home for her where she can interact with people on a regular basis and get the attention she deserves.  She is great with people, but is still fearful around other dogs and can be aggressive, so we are looking for a foster that does not have any other pets at this time.

    Can anyone help????

  11. The cat feeding, trapping and release program was originally set up by Joan James who was a long time resident of Boquete.  Upon her departure, Kirsten and Ray Quimby agreed to take over this valuable and necessary program for the community.

Essentially the goal is to identify feral cats, provide them with food, trap them and have them sterilized and released back into the wild to prevent further breeding.  Currently there are eight feeding stations in the Boquete area which feed more than 100 cats per month.

In the past six months (as of November 2016) 36 cats have been trapped and sterilized.

We need your help with donations to keep this program alive.  Donations go towards food, and the sterilization costs ($8 per cat).  Our current need is approximately $300.00 a month for food and we are woefully short of that goal each month.

We would like to see this program become a thriving and successful arm of the ARF umbrella, and we are hoping you will help us achieve this.

If you would like to make a donation towards this essential program, please note “cat trapping program” when making your donation.

  12. Hello everyone!  For December, the amount of monthly donations was $2437.00 and expenses totaled $2475.00.  Thank you to everyone who contributed!

4 dogs found their forever home this month, and 2 cats were adopted.  If you have any friends or relatives looking for a pet, please direct them to our site or have them contact us, as we have many ready for adoption.

Our year end totals are 52 dogs and 24 cats that found their forever homes.  To start off 2017, we have 28 dogs and 8 cats in our care.

Please consider fostering an animal if you are able to do so.  We are in desperate need of temporary homes for the many animals that the community is alerting us to and are having a very difficult time keeping up.  It is never our goal to turn away an animal in need, but we only have so many places to put these animals, and we need your help.

When you foster an animal with ARF, we take care of all food and medical expenses – we just need you to provide a loving and protective environment.

  13. ZEMBLA
Zembla was rescued in David at the end of October. She was starving, had tick fever, liver problems and a bad hind leg. With good care, she made a quick recovery - medicines, good nutrition and lots of TLC and love. She now walks on four legs again, she has a clean bill of health, has been spayed, dewormed and vaccinated and is ready for her new home. She is alert and will make a good watchdog. She goes along fine with other dogs; not sure about cats.

  14. Here are a few of our friends hoping to find a loving home for the new year:

Charlie is a male Cocker, around 3 years old and weighs 35 lbs. He likes to chase cats, but does not harm them.  He is friendly with other dogs, chickens and children.  His favorite pass time is cuddling.  Very sweet little guy.

Winnie is ready for adoption!  It has been since February that this girl has been given TLC to get back her health and her weight…..she looks like a real Boxer now!  She was being starved by her owner, and it was touch and go for a while there.  Winnie is a very smart girl.  She is good with other dogs but not with cats.  She loves cuddles and car rides. She is very much a family dog that is very loyal and protective.

Susie is a sweet and very smart little Panamanian Bird Dog, very rare we are certain.  Her foster is teaching her basic commands and how to walk on a leash.  She will be ready for adoption in January 2017 and is looking forward to finding her permanent home.  Susie was rescued after giving birth to 10 pups.

Caramel the kitty is approximately 6 months old (as of January 2017) He is very playful, cheerful, and loves other cats.  He is also a good hunter.  Caramel loves to be cuddled and held.  He prefers to be inside, but also enjoys the outdoors.

This sweet little hound, Elle Mae, was a stray helped by some very kind people who have now moved.
Dr. Tello tells us that she is quite young, has never had pups, and is in good condition.  She is very sweet and playful and gets along with other dogs.  She looks as though she may be at least part German Short Haired Pointer.

  15. Keith, it is very common in the States and Canada.   There are several different companies who "monopolize" this industry.  I cannot truthfully say that I know that all microchips are "cross referenced" from one company to another - which in my opinion it should be.....that is really the only way to make this idea effective.

I live part time in the Cayman Islands, and the microchip my dogs have are based in Canada.  Like all technology today, it doesn't really matter where you are, as long as you have an effective system.

Panama, as far as I am aware, and anyone with more knowledge please correct me, does not have a viable microchip system in place.

  16. Also please remember to have a collar and tag on your pet with your contact number engraved on it so people can contact you immediately if the pet is found....rather than wading thru various websites/blogs/plastered posters, etc.

You can get an engraved tag from Mr. Dog in David, and sometimes from Melo in Boquete and David...(when the engraving machines are operational).....also you can order from Amazon and have shipped to Boquete thru Mailboxes or E Shop.

Take the small steps necessary to ensure your pet is safe at all times, and prepare for the worst......microchipping is not yet fully here in Panama yet....but at least have an identification tag with your phone number on his/her collar in case your pet gets lost.

They depend on US to protect and take care of them.......let's not disappoint them

  17. Beginning on Saturday, December 31, probably sometime in the afternoon the fireworks will start and will continue on well into the night.

Please protect your pets by bringing them inside or keeping them contained in a secure location.

As we have seen from just this past week over Christmas, many dogs made their great escape from fear of the loud noises.  As far as we are aware none have been found yet.

Please learn from others; this is a frightening time for most of these animals and they depend on you to keep them safe.
