  1. Hello all,

We are urgently seeking fosters for these three pups.  They are approximately 3 months old.  They have had their first shots and are scheduled for the clinic on October 29th.  They will be ready for adoption after that.  ARF provides our fosters with all food and medication needed for the animals.  Please contact us if you can help.

  3. Say hello to Mani. She looks and behaves like, at least part, Weimaraner. Though still a pup, she will grow into an aristocratic young lady with the right owner.

Mani needs an active owner who will exercise with her regularly. Couch potatoes will likely drive her to be bored and destructive. Like most high strung Weimaraners, she likes to go for runs and most any athletic activity to burn off her energy. Long hikes and agility training are probably right up her alley! She is a mischievous girl who likes to steal things like shoes. Mani has a loud bark, but will stop when you tell her to. She does not like being alone or being bored. She is afraid of strange noises like the microwave, but doesn’t seem bothered by thunder. Mani enjoys chewing on plastic bottles and cardboard. She is learning how to behave around other dogs and enjoys playing gently. Mani is smart and will respond well to further training.

If you have plenty of time and energy to spare for this beautiful girl, she will be a loyal partner who will reward you with her companionship.

  4. I lost my dog on May 2nd and lost my husband on May 3rd.
I am returning to the States and renting a room in my sister's home with her husband and daughter.  I can't take this dog with me.  I have been asking all of my friends to ask around to see if someone wants a nice, loving dog.  This poor dog has had a very pitiful life!  He just wants to be loved.  Dr. Chely thinks he is three years old mas o menos.  I'm having him fixed Sep. 28.

His face is quite bitten from when he was a street dog, lots of little scars and big.  His ear has been intentionally cut up.  His nose has suffered at the hands of a machete.  Part of his tongue is missing, either cut off or bitten off, it's an awfully straight cut.  He inhales his food like you are going to snatch it from him and he will miss yet another meal.  I bought him two toys, he didn't know how to play with toys.  I cried.

He is very lovable.  He lets me know whenever he sees or hears something.  He has acute senses.  He does not want to ride in the car.  He does not want to be abandoned again.  He wants to sit by your side and have you pet him and know that he is loved.  I gave him a shower and he just stood there while I made him clean.  I don't think he liked it, but he did not try to get out of the shower.  This poor guy deserves a chance at a better life.  I think he would be loyal for life.

  5. Hi all.  This is another installment in the Cat Lady of Jaramillo story.    The shelter that was built doesn't look like much but it was constructed of donated recycled materials and it serves its purpose.

"Since the last update we have achieved great things. 12 more cats were spayed between July and August giving a total of 28 cats spayed to date.  Eight (8) cats were adopted, four of them at ARF events.

In August Ray built a cozy cat shelter outside my aunt`s house, giving them a place to live other than my aunt’s small kitchen.  This makes my aunt very pleased.  Dario was the first to inspect and approve of the new shelter.  Then the other cats followed and are comfortably sleeping in their new space.  During the day they rest on top of the shelter.

Carlos and I are currently fostering the last 2 kittens. ARF continues donating cat food for my aunt’s cats and helping us with vet visits, medicine, kitten food and litter.

We are getting close to the finish line.  We would like to say a special thanks to ARF for all the  help we have  received from them. Honorable mention is given to Dra. Chely who has been very supportive to our cause and of course a huge thanks to Kirsten and Ray for their commitment to our cats and good vibes."

  6. Meet Phyfer.  She is about 5 years old now.

At one time she belonged to a couple who left Panama, and chose to leave her behind to fend for herself.

She was adopted but then the owner died, and she was taken back by ARF.  She is now in a foster home, but is looking for her forever place.

She is a tall girl and appears to have Sighthound in her, perhaps even Greyhound.  She has short blonde hair and can be a bit shy at first.  She seems to have more confidence when she is with a companion dog as a friend.   She has always been friendly with people and other dogs.  She has some interest in cats as well.  She likes to stare at them and may chase them, but would not hurt them.

If you are interested in providing a loving home for Phyfer, please contact us.

  7. This little boy was spotted near Super Baru and later was running in the road by the library.  He is not street smart and is very polite and well mannered so we believe he may have an owner.  If you know this dog or who he may belong to, please contact us so we can get him back home.

Also, we are looking for a foster or forever home for Mani.  Mani was found wandering the road by some tourists as a pup.  She has now grown into a beautiful dog - we believe she is almost pure Weimaraner.

  8. Yes!  This dog has finally been caught.  Thank you to everyone who helped.  She is being taken to the vet today and will have an evaluation.  We do not yet know if her leg is fractured/broken, or what he blood levels look like.

If you would like to contribute to the expenses incurred, please visit http://www.arf-boquete.com/donate.html

We will keep you updated on her progress.

  9. A faithful rescuer in Bajo Boquete has been trying to catch this female dog for weeks.  We have found out that she was "dumped" by Los Establos Plaza.  She has now made her way to Alto Boquete.  She is very skittish and has proven very difficult to catch.  She is injured and needs medical attention.  She is also in heat and has several male dogs after her.  If you see this dog, please contact the numbers on the flyer below, or ARF on arf.boquete@mail.com.

This small kitten was saved from certain death last night by three dogs trying to attack it.  Thank you Maureen for saving this little guy.  He is about 7-8 weeks old.  He will be neutered at the clinic this Sunday.  If you are interested in adopting him, please contact us.

  12. Hello everyone!  For July, the amount of monthly donations was $1138.00 and expenses totaled $3058.00.  Thank you to everyone who contributed.   For several months this year our expenses have exceeded our donations.  Donations to date including July are $13,104.00 verses expenses of $16,789.00.  This has resulted in our bank account taking a pretty big hit.  We can only continue the work we do with the kind donations from the community.  Please consider making a donation today – regardless of the amount – the animals thank you and of course so do we!

We had a fantastic month for adoptions with 8 dogs and 2 cats finding their forever homes.

A total of 14 cats were taken to the clinic and sterilized thru our feral cat program in July.  You can make a donation to this invaluable program by going to our website.  Reference “cat trapping” and your donation will go directly for food and medical expenses for the ferals.

    Bingo

August bingo will take place on the 24th.  We are heading back to Big Daddy’s and I think this will be our home for bingo for a while.  The venue and Chris are very accommodating and he’s working on some specials for bingo participants.  Time is from 1:00pm-3:00pm.

Come early, get your preferred seat and order some lunch.  Happy Hour drink prices will also be offered.   Bring all your friends!  The more that attend the bigger the cash prizes!

    ARF shirts

We have recently ordered shirts for all of our volunteers so we can be easily identified at the market and other functions.  Several people have expressed interest in purchasing an ARF t-shirt.  If you would be interested ($15) please contact us by email on arf.boquete@gmail.com.

    Monthly Adoption Event recap:

Thanks to everyone who attended our adoption event.  Two cats were adopted, and we had some interest in a few of the dogs as well.  If you have friends or family thinking about getting a dog or cat, please let them know about our monthly adoption event which will be held at the library on the first Saturday of every month.

Pancake Breakfast:  On August 24th we held another successful pancake breakfast at the Amigos de Animales Building. Not only was it lots of fun with a great crowd and a delight to our taste-buds, but it was also a success in terms of adoptions. We had one confirmed adoption of a kitty and one for a dog. We have also 3 pending adoptions as a result of the breakfast event. Again, a big thank you for everybody that attended and also to all those that helped out. Only thanks to you can we make a difference….every little bit helps!

    Recent rescue – Price:

Two of our volunteers recently rescued “Price” from Price Smart in David.  This poor girl was full of ticks and she is having problems with mobility in her back legs.  She will be given all the necessary care, and we hope she will recover.  She also has a tumor that will need to be removed once she is healthy.  Please consider donating towards the medical bills for Price.

    Featured Dog –  Bila

Bila is the last of her 7 siblings waiting for adoption.  Her mother was killed when the litter was very young.  Bila is everything you would expect from a young pup – playful, joyful, energetic and loving.

    Featured Cat – Mr. Mitts

Mr. Mitts had a family who loved him and gave him a good life. He spent a lot of time outdoors, but had the ability to come inside as well. His family left Panama and unfortunately was not able to return due to medical reason. Mr. Mitts is currently in a foster home, but they are moving at the beginning of September and cannot take him with them. He is gentle and loving. Mr. Mitts tested positive for the Feline HIV virus although he does not have the virus or exhibit symptoms, he would need to be the only cat in the home, or share it with those that also have the virus.

  15. Mr. Mitts tested positive for the Feline HIV virus although he does not have the disease and may not for many years. He would need to be the only cat in the home so the virus can't spread, or would need to share a place with cats that already have the virus.

Tanya is also looking for a new foster home.  She is an adult female cat, approx. 6 years old.  She would make the ideal companion.  Being older, she has a mellow and mature personality and doesn't need to be entertained like a kitten.  She does not get along with other cats and would prefer to be the only house cat.  She is looking for a lap to “cuddle” on.

If you can help with fostering either of these cuties, even for a short time, please contact us.  ARF provides all food and any necessary medical treatment.

Since May, when we meet Kirsten from ARF, we can gladly say that we have made great strides with the "Jaramillo Cat Lady" case.  This lady is my grandaunt and me and my family are so grateful for all the help received.

In June Kirsten and I agreed to start spaying the kittens and finding them good homes. Carlos, my boyfriend and I decided to keep the kittens and foster them.

Previously this would not work for us because we have no way to keep the kittens controlled in the laundry room. We brought 5 kittens in one of the big carriers that Kirsten borrowed to us but it was too small for them.  We decided to build a cage where we they would be comfortable. My grandma helped us to look for the materials, and my granduncle, who is very good at construction, helped us to assemble it. Another aunt paid for transport of the cage to our house. This experience brought us closer as a family.

Every month ARF has been donating cat food  for my grandaunt's cats.  Considering that one bag of 25 lbs. lasts 6 days, this is a huge help for her. In the same way ARF helped us to spay all the 12 female cats and 4 kittens. We have found homes for 7 kittens. More will be fixed at the July clinic.

We still have 9 kittens waiting plus 16 males. The labor with kittens include: keeping them healthy (feeding, bathing, cleansing their space everyday), giving them worm medicine, taking them to the vet when necessary, socializing and cuddling them.   Currently we are using sawdust but the vet don't recommend this plus it attracts a lot of flies.

When we contacted ARF my grandaunt had 40 cats. Without the kittens she will have 28. Yesterday she (a very reserved person) told me that she can finally breath knowing that she won't have more kittens coming and sent thanks and greetings to Kirsten.

We are deeply thankful for ARF and for the support they give to us.  We especially thank Kirsten and Ray; such a loving and compassionate individuals.

Pictures are of Gabriella's grandaunt, Gabriella and her boyfriend Carlos and some of the cats.

If you would like to donate funds for the maintenance of these cats, please go to:  http://www.arf-boquete.com/donate.html and indicate your donation is for the Jaramillo cats.

  18. The puppies we have are getting bigger - and fast!  They are only about 4 months old now, but they will be big dogs.  They are all fixed and have had all the necessary shots.

Their four siblings have already been adopted, and they are still seeking their forever home.  We have Mango, Yello, and Billa that are looking for a good home.

  19. Abuela is back!

This is Abuela.  She is approximately 7 years old and has been spayed.  We do not know her story, as she simply “showed up” on someone’s doorstep one day.

It is very obvious that for most of her life she was probably on a short chain.  Her “elbows” and rear show signs that she was made to sit on a hard surface for long periods of time.

She has a very sweet disposition and just wants to be loved.  Abuela is a large dog, approximately 80 pounds.

She was previously adopted, but the owner is not caring for her properly.  We want to find a good loving home for her.

  21. There will be some establishments that will be shooting off fireworks tomorrow night, and I'm sure a few private individuals/parties.  Please ensure to keep your pets inside or secured.  A few tips to help them the booms and bangs (taken from positively.com):

    1. Make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise earlier in the day.
    2. Keep your dogs inside during fireworks, preferably with human companionship. If it’s hot, air conditioning will help. Bringing your dog to a fireworks display is never a good idea.
    3. Provide a safe place inside for your dogs to retreat. When scared of sounds they can’t orient, dogs often prefer small enclosed areas.  If your dog is comfortable in a crate, that is a good option.
    4. If possible, keep the windows and curtains closed. Covering the crate or lowering the blinds can also be helpful. Removing visual stimulation can also help calm dogs.
    5. Make sure all your dogs are wearing ID tags with a properly fitting collar. Dogs have been known to become Houdini around the 4th of July.
    6. Leave your dog something fun to do – like a frozen Kong filled with his favorite treats.
    7. Calming Sound Therapy: It is most effective when you first play the music well before the fireworks start, at a time the dog is already feeling peaceful and relaxed. He will begin to associate the music with being calm and content. Then play the music a couple of hours before the fireworks start and continue to play through bedtime. The music doesn’t need to be loud to be effective.
    8. Tactile: There are two canine wraps on the market that reportedly help sound phobic dogs. The original Anxiety Wrap was invented by professional dog trainer Susan Sharpe, CPDT-KA. The patented design uses acupressure and maintained pressure to reduce stress. The thundershirt is also a wrap for your dog that provides gentle, constant pressure. Their website reports that over 85% of Thundershirt users see significant improvement in noise anxiety symptoms. Most dogs respond with the very first usage; some need 2-3 usages before showing significant improvement.
