  1. AMIGOS DE ANIMALES September, 2017 Newsletter September Clinic Report At our September clinic, we sterilized another 190 animals. Again, nearly 2 to 1 were cats. Our wonderful Panamanian collector groups are catching up with all the “pods” of cats in their areas and thankfully bringing them in to be sterilized. Our final clinic of the year will be October 29 at the Amigos de Animales Events Center in Alto Boquete, across from Mercado Ivan’s. We hope to sterilize another 300 dogs and cats and free them from the worries of lack of food, babies to take care of and related illnesses to battle. Please speak with your workers, gardeners, maids, and neighbors and help them get their animals to this final clinic of 2017. Call Magaly for a reservation at 6563-8686 or email boqueteanimales@gmail.com. We only charge $15 per dog and $8 per cat. Help us help you. Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) BY Healthy Pet Magazine Copyright 2014 Dogs and cats alike can be affected by conjunctivitis, an inflammation of the tissues surrounding the inner eyelids and white part of the eyes that sometimes accompanies a respiratory infection or eye injury. It can also be brought on by airborne irritants, dry eye, or a more serious illness such as canine distemper or feline herpes virus. Any dog or cat can develop conjunctivitis. The clinical signs of conjunctivitis vary depending on the severity of the inflammation. Signs include: Discharge from the eyes (can be pus, watery, or thick, like mucus) Swollen eyelids Red, “bloodshot” eyes Squinting Rubbing the eyes with a paw or against other objects, such as furniture or the floor If the conjunctivitis is severe, permanent damage to the cornea (the clear covering on the surface of the eye) can occur. Most cases of conjunctivitis are treated with drops or ointments applied directly to the eyes. If the conjunctivitis is associated with another illness, like an upper respiratory infection, antibiotics or other medication given by mouth may also be recommended. In many cases, the eye starts looking better after only a few treatments. However, all medications should be given as directed for the full course of treatment. .Many causes of conjunctivitis are preventable. For example, minimizing exposure to airborne irritants like cigarette smoke, monitoring pets during play and exercise to reduce the risk of trauma to the eye, and keeping pets current on vaccinations against diseases that can cause conjunctivitis, such as feline herpes virus and canine distemper can reduce the likelihood of developing conjunctivitis associated with these causes. Email Ms Clare at suzeclare@gmail.com CranioSacral Therapy (CST) practitioners release restrictions in the Craniosacral system to assist the body’s natural healing processes and its ability to bolster resistance to disease, pain and dysfunction. A session of CST is performed to clients fully clothed on a massage table. A session is 60- 75 minutes long. Through the month of Oct, Susan is offering Boquete residents a free CST session. After that, though October, sessions will be $30 each Susan Clare, CST Practitioner, was a Florida.state Licensed. Massage Therapist for 30 years, before moving to Central America in 2011. She also has a MA Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. Susan walks her talk and embodies her passions for natural, alternative and preventative healthcare modalities. She works by appointment at the Haven. To schedule an appointment, or for more information, email Ms. Clare at suzeclare@gmail.com CranioSacral Therapy (CST) was pioneered and developed by osteopathic physician John E. Upledger following extensive scientific studies from 1975 to 1983 at Michigan State University, where he served as a clinical researcher and Professor of Biomechanics. CST is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system - comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Using a soft touch generally no greater than 5 grams, or about the weight of a nickel, practitioners release restrictions in the Craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system [CNS]..At the very least, CST is very relaxing, as the CNS releases accumulated tension deeply relaxing the total self. " CST works best with people who either take, or are moving toward taking, better care of themselves through exercise, nutrition, and self-reflection. It leads one within to one's source of strength, to stop seeking answers from the outside, and to assume greater responsibility for what he or she can naturally do to create greater ease and well-being from the inside. CST supports personal growth and responsibility. It can also undo the tension created through past injuries, traumas and surgeries, to bring the recipient more fully into the present- to the place- where he or she, can either begin or continue building, better health." - Susan Clare By complementing the body's natural healing processes, CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and is effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction, including: Migraine Headaches Chronic Neck and Back Pain Motor-Coordination Impairments Colic Autism Central Nervous System Disorders Orthopedic Problems Concussions and Traumatic Brain Injuries Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia Spinal Cord Injuries Scoliosis Infantile Disorders Learning Disabilities Chronic Fatigue Emotional Difficulties Stress and Tension-Related Problems Fibromyalgia and other Connective-Tissue Disorders Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ) Neurovascular or Immune Disorders Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Post-Surgical Dysfunction CranioSacral Therapy. 5. YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'LL FIND AT FINCA FELIZ’S TABLE AT THE BCP MARKET. The past few weeks I’ve had oranges, bananas, thimble berries, and even peaches, all organically grown at Finca Feliz. It will be a few months before the blackberries are back. They’re growing and looking good. The Introduction of SoilTap, the Organic Gardening Products I use was a big success and gardeners all over Boquete are loving the results. HOW CAN YOU STAY HEALTHY? We all know how important the Immune System is in keeping our bodies healthy and functioning properly. It’s the key to good health. My combo tincture of Turkey Tail/Chaga addresses this issue. Turkey Tail Mushroom has been used in Traditional Chinese medicine for 2500 years. These two mushrooms provide a powerful combination to stimulate the immune system and Chaga contains the highest amount of antioxidants of any natural product grown on this planet. Turkey Tail is recommended by medical Doctors for their patients undergoing Chemotherapy to help strengthen the Immune System. SALE – October and November the Turkey Tail/Chaga tincture is on sale for $15/2 oz. and if it’s for a person struggling with immune issues or are on Chemo, it’s $10. BEADS FOR SALE For the next few weeks I will be bringing a large collection of assorted beads (mostly seed beads) from the lifetime collection of my mother, who loved making earrings with them. I also have a treasure trove of instruction books with patterns and directions (in English). ATTENTION GARDENERS: Are you interested in some gardening classes? When I came to Panama, having grown gardens most of my life, I thought it would be no problem to do it here. Boy was I wrong. After many trails, errors and disappointments, I’ve learned a lot and want to share my knowledge with you. Here are a few things I’m considering. If you have any suggestions, let me know. How to use the cycles of the moon for planting, trans-planting and pruning. How to make compost from your kitchen scraps and never turn soil with a shovel. How to make your own soil and what garden cuttings and leaves are good to use. How to identify a problem with a plant and what to do to solve it What products I use, that work, to keep it organic. Companion planting and what grows best where. What plants repel insects? Growing Panamanian herbs and their medicinal uses. How to “graft” a fruit tree. The care and feeding of plants, orchids and much more. This is a plan in progress. Your feedback is needed for scheduling classes on a day most convenient to you. Thursday, Friday or Saturday mornings is best for me. Please email me privately if you are interested in participating and any ideas you have. lvanderkar@gmail.com PLANTS AND SEEDS FOR SALE Pre-order and delivered at the Tuesday Market (or come to the farm) Blackberry 4 for $10 Strawberry 1 for $2 – 3 for $5 Thimble berry 1 for $4 – 3 for $10 Dulce Bananas 2 plants - $10/ea. 9. Contact Marguerite Heffner 6959-4825 or panamagirl52@gmail.com I lost my dog on May 2nd and lost my husband on May 3rd. I am returning to the States and renting a room in my sister's home with her husband and daughter. I can't take this dog with me. I have been asking all of my friends to ask around to see if someone wants a nice, loving dog. This poor dog has had a very pitiful life! He just wants to be loved. Dr. Chely thinks he is three years old mas o menos. I'm having him fixed Sep. 28. His face is quite bitten from when he was a street dog, lots of little scars and big. His ear has been intentionally cut up. His nose has suffered at the hands of a machete. Part of his tongue is missing, either cut off or bitten off, it's an awfully straight cut. He inhales his food like you are going to snatch it from him and he will miss yet another meal. I bought him two toys, he didn't know how to play with toys. I cried. He is very lovable. He lets me know whenever he sees or hears something. He has acute senses. He does not want to ride in the car. He does not want to be abandoned again. He wants to sit by your side and have you pet him and know that he is loved. I gave him a shower and he just stood there while I made him clean. I don't think he liked it, but he did not try to get out of the shower. This poor guy deserves a chance at a better life. I think he would be loyal for life. --
  10. Yoga Boquete is moving! Starting on Monday, October 9th, classes will be held at the J&S Gimnasio (the gym near the Boquete Library). Yoga Boquete will be taking a short break, from Oct 1st - Oct 8th. And then... it's back on schedule at this fabulous new location. Class prices will remain the same ($6.00 for 60 min, $9.00 for 90 min). Please note, you do NOT need to be a member to participate in yoga class. (In fact, gym membership & yoga class are not combinable.) GENTLE HATHA YOGA Monday, Thursday & Saturday 10:00 am – 11:00 am, $6.00 A Hatha Yoga class that is relatively gentle, slow and great for beginners or students who prefer a more relaxed style. As this class develops it is able to be custom-tailored to the group’s needs in the spirit of traditional yoga where asanas (poses) were ‘prescribed’ for various conditions (ie, back pain, tight shoulders, and a multitude of other aliments / afflictions.) … Hence, the more you attend practice — and provide feedback — the more supportive and deep the practice will become! ASHTANGA SHORT FORM Wednesday & Friday 10:00 am – 11:00 am, $6.00 This is an active 60 minute class, structured on the main poses from Primary Series (see description below.) Focus is on the breath. Poses are held for five breaths and are interconnected with flowing movements. The same sequence is repeated each class, building strength, flexibility and focus… so that eventually your practice becomes a powerful moving meditation! This class is open to beginners, but is not a “gentle” type of yoga. ASHTANGA FULL SERIES Tuesday 2:30 – 4:00 pm (90 minute class), $9.00 This is an active 90 minute class, practicing the full Primary Series which is arranged in a time-tested sequence designed to specifically align the body, strengthen the nervous system, and increase spinal flexibility. The Full Series is a challenge, but the results are life-changing! Emphasis is placed on breathing (Ujjayi), energy locks (Bandhas), gaze (Drishti) and transitions (Vinyasa). Poses are held for five breaths and are interconnected with flowing movements. The same sequence is repeated each class, building strength, flexibility and focus… so that eventually your practice becomes a powerful moving meditation.
