A geology field trip o Volcan is planned for Sunday, May 19. This trip will explore the terrain around the Baru and Tinsigal volcanoes. The trip will leave from san Francisco Plaza at 8 am and will last most of the day. There is no cost for the trip but participants should have their own cars or have access to a car. Sterilization Clinics at Schools** AADAB's mission is to provide low-cost spaying and neutering services for dogs and cats in the Boquete community and surrounding areas. One of our ongoing initiatives involves sterilization clinics at local schools. During a past educational outreach session, a student named Josefa asked, "How can we get our animals to the clinic? We have no transportation." In response, AADAB organized a clinic right at the school, sterilizing almost 100 dogs and cats! Now, five more schools are requesting similar clinics. By purchasing a $10 membership, you directly contribute to these efforts, preventing hundreds of unwanted animal births and reducing suffering for both animals and their owners¹. ## **2. Educational Outreach Program** AADAB aims to enhance students' educational experiences by providing classes on pet care, animal maintenance, and sterilization. They also expand access to reading books and set up school animal sterilization clinics near students' homes. To achieve this, AADAB needs both volunteers and financial support. Volunteers can help nurture children's experiences throughout the school year, and donations will fund educational supplies and clinic operations. We are planning to conduct an "away" clinic in early June to continue our efforts to reduce the population of homeless and unwanted animals. Our commitment to animal welfare continues to create healthier communities for all species, one clinic at a time.   The Inner Life of Cats OCTOBER 1, 2018 If you have ever wondered why your cat behaves the way it does, wonder no more Are cats less domesticated than dogs? Are they becoming more domesticated over time? Cats are far more similar to their wild ancestors than dogs are to wolves, so dogs are in that sense the more domesticated of the two species. As they adapted to living alongside humans, cats became more sociable with one another and much more accepting of people, but there is no evidence that they have changed much more than that over the past few thousand years. Will cats, which require meat, eventually evolve to eat a broader array of foods as dogs do? Cats and dogs belong to a group of mammals known as Carnivora, and the wild ancestors of both species dined primarily on meat. Recent DNA analyses indicate that over the course of their evolution, dogs have acquired more copies of the so-called amylase gene, which makes an enzyme that helps to break down starch. Having more copies of this gene has allowed dogs to eat a more omnivorous diet. In contrast, the cat family, known as Felidae, lost the genes that encode several key enzymes—including those that manufacture vitamin A, prostaglandins and the amino acid taurine—early in its evolution. Whereas dogs (and humans) can synthesize these substances from plant-based precursors, cats have to obtain them from meat. To expand their diet, cats would have to evolve physiological traits that allow them to synthesize these and other key nutrients from plant foods. This capacity has not emerged during the 10 million years of felid evolution, so it seems unlikely to arise spontaneously in our domestic cats. Why do cats purr? Cats purr because they have something to say, which roughly translated is “please keep still and pay attention to me.” Kittens purr to persuade their mothers to keep on nursing them, and pet cats purr when they want to be stroked. The vibrations emanating from the purr certainly have a calming effect on people. Yet sick cats will also purr as a cry for help. So purring doesn’t always mean “I’m happy.” Some researchers have claimed that the vibrations from purring might help heal bone damage in an injured cat. How do they purr? The purr is an unusual vocalization, made by rattling the vocal cords together rather than vibrating them by pushing air past them, which is how cats—and humans—generate all their other vocal sounds. That’s why cats can purr when they’re breathing in and breathing out. Most species of wildcats can purr, including the cheetah. The exceptions are the big cats—lion, tiger, jaguar and leopard—whose voice boxes are modified so that they can roar. Why do house cats have so many vocalizations compared with wildcats? House cats are much noisier than feral cats, although they have fewer vocalizations than some other species. The jungle cat from Asia, for example, has a couple more that are not in the house cat’s repertoire, namely the “ow” and the “gurgle.” The house cat’s characteristic sound, the meow, is hardly ever heard in feral cat colonies, except occasionally when mother cats are communicating with their kittens. Feral cats diligently monitor one another’s comings and goings, so they don’t need to announce their presence vocally. Cats that live with humans, however, learn that meowing is a good way of getting our attention: our pet felines often find that we have our noses buried in a book or a screen, so they meow to get us to acknowledge them. Some pets develop a “private language” of meows that only their owners understand, each signifying something different that the cat needs. Also, certain breeds are notoriously chatty, the Siamese in particular. Do cats think of their owners as parents? Siblings? Friends? By rubbing around our legs when they greet us, cats show that they regard us as friendly but at the same time slightly superior to them. When living in a family group, kittens rub on their mothers, females rub on males and smaller cats rub on bigger cats. The reverse rarely occurs—an indicator of the small imbalance of power in each of these relationships. How can you get a cat to love you? Cats naturally feel affection for those who feed, look after and play with them, although they don’t always make that obvious. Trust can be harder to win because some cats are just nervous. One trick is to always allow the cat to approach you rather than forcing yourself on the cat when you feel like it. When the cat does approach, reward it with a few treats and let it leave as soon as it wants to. You should find that it comes to you a little sooner, and stays for a little longer, each time.   GET TO KNOW OUR AMIGOS DE ANIMALES FAMILY This month we're featuring a very special member of our team: Ruby McKenzie Your Name: Ruby McKenzie Your position/title with AdA: Founder and during the clinic, I am the “person who sees a problem or is told of a problem and helps to rectify it” (in whatever area it occurs). How long have you been working with AdA? Since the beginning…2005. 19 years Can you tell us a little bit more about what you do with AdA? Having been here from the beginning, there is not much that I don’t know how to do, but mainly I watch for trouble spots and quickly go to see what needs to be done to fix it. Why would you encourage others to volunteer here with AdA? I think it is very fulfilling to be able to assist and change the lives of animals. We allow animals to have happy and healthy lives because the females are not constantly in heat, having puppies and kittens, and looking for food for their offspring. Additionally, spaying diminishes the chances of mammary tumors later in life for the females. For males, neutering dramatically lessens the chances of prostate cancer and greatly lessens the desire to fight with other male dogs and exhibit overly aggressive behavior. So that we can get to know you better can you tell us anything about your background you would like to share and also answer questions below? My husband and I owned a small import business in the electronic industry. The skills needed to keep that business afloat certainly have helped with the organization and the running of Amigos de Animales over the years. Greetings to the Boquete Community from Milky Way Creamery! Many of you already know us from the Tuesday markets where we have offered our goat dairy products for over 10 years. For those of you whom we haven’t yet had the pleasure of meeting, Milky Way is a farmstead goat dairy and creamery right here in Boquete. Although the goats are our main focus, we also have other animals, as well as some vegetables and ornamental plants. Over the years, we’ve had fantastic results with our veggies and flowers by using a fertilizer that we've been producing ever since we started raising goats. Right now we’re offering it to the rest of the community. Our organic fertilizer is made using a mixture of fully composted (black soil), partially composted, and raw goat, duck, chicken, and green manure. The result is a mixture that's teeming with beneficial microorganisms that can support the growth of your plants for 6+ months. You can grow directly on it, or you can use it as the perfect soil amendment for your raised bed and potting mixes. The 50 lb. bag is $12.50. Women and adolescent girls are disproportionately affected. The effects of malnutrition are passed down from mother to child with children suffering unalterable impacts on their brains and futures. Malnourishment has developmental, economic, social, and medical bearings on every country. Communities, families, and individuals are all affected to varying degrees. Women and children, especially those living in poverty, are most vulnerable to undernourishment. In many countries, to reduce burdens on their families, girls marry at very young ages before they are fully developed; these girls then have babies early. Babies born to malnourished mothers are malnourished themselves. For more information see: https://www.worldhungerday.org/ This is why the work of Buenos Vecinos de Boquete is so important. There are NO Panamanian food banks. BVB currently feeds approximately 120 families in the Boquete area. Many of these families have several children and nutrient rich foods are vital. Because he has been unable to work for quite some time due to an accident, he has no income and no retirement funds. He does not walk well as a result of the accident and his blood pressure is high. In addition, he has passed the age of mandatory retirement so even if he could work, he would not be hired. He has relatives who give him a little money on an irregular basis, but the money does not cover his needs. His house is small with no windows and is spartanly furnished. Leave a Legacy Planned or Legacy Giving Have you considered what you wish your legacy will be? Thought about how to make a big impact on many people? The BVB mission is to provide basic nutritional needs for people who are elderly, handicapped, have large families, or a combination of those things. In other words, people who are unable to feed their family or themselves adequately without assistance. BVB is currently feeding 120 families which range in size from 1–20 people almost half of whom have a disabled person in the family. As of May 2024, the cost of feeding a family is $540 a year. As prices rise our costs to feed a family rise. Planned/Legacy Giving is done in consultation with your attorney when doing your estate plan. Once bequests to family members have been determined, people generally look to make donations to the charities they support. If you’ve already settled distribution of your assets in your home country, why not consider leaving your Panamanian assets in Panama. This happened recently, when a woman donated her house in Boquete to be sold, with the proceeds going to her favorite charity. It’s a great way to simplify distribution of your Panamanian assets and can have a lasting impact on the mission of the charity for years to come. What a wonderful opportunity to leave a memory of your life. BVB was recently the recipient of a planned gift. This donation allowed us to add more families to our growing list and provide them with vital support until they’re back on their feet or, in the case of isolated, impoverished seniors, as long as they need us. The Food Whisperer BVB has a Food Start program where our clients receive a monthly live plant that they can transplant and eat when it is ready to harvest. As the saying goes, the seeds don’t grow themselves, so we have a plant whisperer, Tito Bernacony, who does the tough part of the job for us. Tito lives with his wife and son. He is an engaging man, full of energy and enthusiasm. His greatest joy comes from donating time to the larger community. He says “I was treasurer of the Catholic Church for 30 years, as well as president and a member for 18 years of the rural aqueduct water community.” He still contributes as much as possible, participating in local boards and collaborating with Operation Smile since having surgery for his cleft lips and palate. Tito has been working with plants since he was 16, when he went through a Ministerio de Desarrollo Agropecuario (Ministry of Agricultural Development) program. He began with a greenhouse project and worked up to being a farm manager. He has 25 years invested in greenhouse management which involves “first, the land, with a soil analysis, to verify that it can be planted. Then evaluate height (of the greenhouse), wind density, daylight to qualify the height and measurements in which it will be built. This then moves on to construction costs and other costs.” Once all of that is determined, the type of seeds and/or plants are chosen to plant or transplant. When doing the “seed whispering” for BVB, Tito chooses seeds for their “resistance to diseases and pests, and also that they are organic and highly productive so that they maintain their quality and flavor.” Seeds germinate and become viable plants to give to BVB families between 22-35 days, depending on the seed variety. During those days, he gives them good care, which includes watering them as needed, applying organic insecticides, checking for weeds and fungi, checking leaves and roots to make sure they are healthy, and, finally, check for pendulous stems or buds. When asked what else he would like our newsletter readers to know about him, he responded “my dedication has always been the service to the population, which is where my happiness and my desire to get up every day come from.
