  5. Movie starts at 1pm, and food, drinks and popcorn will be available from Cafe La Villa. (If you like, you can bring cushions for the hard restaurant chairs, or folding/camp chairs for more comfort.) There is no admission charge, but we ask for voluntary donations at the end of the movie to support the program and help pay for the video system. Later this week, in response to requests for better advance notice of upcoming screenings, I will select films for the rest of December, and send out that schedule. I will also be setting up a Facebook page where we can communicate about movies and related topics. David van Harn, Curator Boquete Film Club ----- Description: I selected this week's film - a comedy starring Sally Field - in part to honor the women here in our expat community. Many of you have a delightful attitude towards life and a wonderful sense of humor - just like the "Doris" character in the film. The critics seem to agree that Sally Field's performance in this film is really what makes it worth watching. I have not watched the movie- only the trailer. But I love the way it portrays the interactions between characters of different generations. One of the reasons I chose to retire in Boquete - rather than move to an affordable senior apartment complex or community back in California - was that very concept of being around and interacting with the liveliness of people of all ages each and every day. From the Roger Ebert Website: "For those of us who really liked—nay, worshiped and adored—Sally Field even before she won a single Oscar, her presence in the modestly conceived but emotionally brimming “Hello, My Name is Doris†is like a beacon of beckoning human warmth just waiting to be cherished. The 69-year-old actress and former TV “Gidget†not only gets to prove that her superb comedic skills have gotten none the rustier since she was last given a worthy arena to display them. But the fact that Field is doing so in her first leading role in 20 years is on the same level of a cinematic event as Lily Tomlin’s hardcore domination of “Grandma†or Blythe Danner's delicate command of “I’ll See You in My Dreams.â€Â

From the age 31-49 I was a die-hard runner. I started running to lose an unwanted extra 65 pounds I put on from age 30-31. Over the years, the consequences and physical damage to my body from running were devastating. But like most of us have done at one time or another, I persisted under the false belief that I should and could "push through the pain". The "no-pain-no-gain" theory we were taught is probably in the top 2 of the worst advice in Western civilization that was ever promoted to maintain our physical health - ESPECIALLY when we pass age 35. If you don't believe me, just look around and ask a few questions of your fellow humans over the age of 50. These stories contribute to about 50% of why doctors are still in business. In the summer of 1999 (at age 48) I began my stretching/yoga practice by learning the Tibetan 5 Rites. After discovering the benefits and the transformation this had on my health, my joints, flexibility, strength, healing old injuries, etc., I attended and completed a 9 week training with Bikram's Yoga College of India. I immediately began teaching full time. Since then I have taught various Stretching & yoga styles as well as branching out to Vinyasa and Ashtanga yoga. Other trainings I have completed include a 200HR RYT with Tiffany Cruikshank of yogamedicine.com. Then following Paul Grilley Yin techniques, I earned a certification in Yin Yoga with Debbi Atkins-Davis 1000HR RYT. June 30 of this year I moved to Boquete from Las Vegas, Nevada. For the last 8 years in Las Vegas I taught public classes at various studios throughout the city, and to private clients. My teachings range from Stretching and Assisted Stretching as taught by Bob Anderson and Aaron Mattes, to gentle yoga and chair yoga, and all the way up to more aggressive styles. I have created a 60 minute yoga fusion class, combining several yoga disciplines. For lack of an official name of this style of teaching, I am simply calling it Yoga Fusion 60. If you are new to Stretching, I believe you will really like my "Stretching for EveryBODY" 3 part clinic. If you are more intermediate or advanced, let me know and I'll fill you in on my other new classes here at The Haven. If you require private sessions due to physical conditions, we can discuss that if you'd like to. Thanks for your interest and let me know if you have questions. See you in a clinic!

  15. We have two older women who have suffered strokes and are being treated by physical therapy at the handicap foundation. One of which is named Yaneth who lives with her husband in a little very modest Panamanian home. The house has no bathroom or running water. She at times cannot come to therapy because her path is dirt and with large rocks in places so her aged husband cannot push her wheelchair. We are working on raising enough money to put in a very basic concrete path so she can come on a regular basis. The other women is Edith. She has a history of falling as she has little use of her right arm and leg. We have worked on braces and strengthening exercises to help prevent falls that could leave her in even worse shape (ie. broken hip). After doing a home inspection it was discovered that one of the contributing factors to her falls is that she cannot fit her wheel chair into the bath room and then it is so small her husband has to try to hold her up while he dumps buckets of cold water on her. She has slipped in the bathroom several times. We are try to raise enough money to enlarge the bath room such that she can get her wheel chair in and then transfer to a shower chair. This will make a huge difference in her day to day life. These two projects combined will cost $700, so that is our goal. Currently we have raised $30. We did a similar project for Alberto, one of our paraplegic's. His dirt path also prevented him for making to therapy regularly. These pictures are: Alberto's path project and the home he and his family live in, Yeneth and her husband, Edith working hard on the stationary bike and Alberto working hard learning to walk again four years after his accident. If you can help us raise money for these worthwhile projects it would be wonderful. Every little bit will help. You can drop your donation off at the Handicap Foundation Building in Alto Boquete next to the newly constructed Social Security Clinic or you can leave it with Penny Barrett in front of the theater at the Tuesday Market. Thanks for your help and concern. Dave and Leiann Scee, voluteers at the foundation.

The respect and admiration they show to one another is extraordinary. Please enjoy the pictures here. For what it's worth, the entire event was shot on an iPhone. Mark Heyer

  19. Is your home or business really protected against Lightning and Utility Surges? Unfortunately, I'm often consulted after damage has occurred and costly replacements have been purchased. If you have panel mount surge protectors that use indicator lights, you don't have the level of protection you've been led to believe. These products use components that degrade over time and should be replaced at least every 5 years. They also allow between 400-600 volts to pass to your 120 volt equipment before they start to work...not good! I install the highest quality panel mount surge protectors in a set of two, one for lightning and the other for utility surges. At $250 installed (locally), this set is a bargain that you don't want to be without. No degrading components, no indicator lights, no excessive voltages passed through to your valuable equipment. If you want true Whole House Protection, your Cable TV, Telephone, Internet Radio wires need dedicated surge protectors separate from the panel mount units. Lightning can travel on ANY wire that enters the building and I know of many people who have sustained considerable lightning damage through the Cable Onda (cable TV) service wire. Don't delay, surges can happen at any time, in any season.
