  1. "The Clubhouse" in the BCP Hex Room is before and during our movies. Food and drinks - including popcorn - are available for purchase. ------------------------------ We don't charge admission, but we do ask for donations to support BCP and the Film Club program. February 4 - Everything is Illuminated (USA - 2005) February 11 - Amargosa (USA - 2000) February 18 - Honeydripper (USA - 2008) February 23 - No Movie (Jazz & Blues Festival at the feria) ---------------------------------- This Sunday, January 28 @ 1:00pm - Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World (USA - 2017) 1 hour, 43 minutes Ratings: 7.9 - IMDB, 89% - Rotten Tomatoes, 3/4 - Roger Ebert This documentary film was named after "Rumble" a simple but powerful 1958 rock & roll instrumental by Link Wray, an East Coast rock & roll musician who was a Shawnee Indian. It was one of the first records to use "power chords" which later became a staple of many of the hard rock styles. At the time the record was released, I was nearing the end of my sophomore year in high school in Chicago, and liked Rumble the first time I heard it. I never knew until I read about this documentary that Wray was a Native American. The record was released in April, 1958, and climbed to #16 that summer. According to Wikipedia, it had a major influence on many later rock and roll stars. If you never liked rock and roll, you probably won't enjoy this documentary. In my case, even though I was an usher for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra when the 45RPM single "Rumble" was released, I have enjoyed a very wide range of music most of my life, from classical to pop to rock & roll and even. From The Los Angeles Times: Link Wray's 1958 single "Rumble," a guitar-driven instrumental, was banned from key U.S. radio markets for fear that its loping, wordless swagger would encourage juvenile delinquency. [Plus the fact the "rumble" was slang for gang fights.] The grab-you-by-the-solar-plexus track has galvanized generations of rock and punk musicians. It's also a potent entry point for Catherine Bainbridge's new documentary, a vibrant survey of a criminally overlooked aspect of American popular music: the crucial contributions of Native Americans. Wray was a North Carolina Shawnee with childhood memories of Ku Klux Klan terror. A conflicted combination of artistic expression and the need to hide is at the core of Bainbridge's film. While celebrating the music and ethnic heritage of Wray and nine other performers, she and co-director Alfonso Maiorana show that many American Indians chose to identify as African or Mexican. Not every chapter in the loosely organized film delivers the punch of its eye-opening early sequences, which explore the infusion of indigenous rhythms into the blues of former slaves. But there are compelling mini-portraits of stars — Jimi Hendrix, Robbie Robertson — as well as figures who aren't household names but whose influence runs deep, among them Delta bluesman Charley Patton and jazz singer Mildred Bailey. With its rich range of genres, personalities (including the late great activist-musician John Trudell) and political history, "Rumble" could easily fill an extended series. Inevitably cursory, it's nonetheless a fascinating introduction to the ways that core components of Americana wouldn't be eradicated. Or silenced. 2. Two days ago a cute, friendly kitten wandered into my yard. She has clearly been someone’s cherished pet. She is about 4 months old, used to being inside and outside. She was very hungry so I fed her and kept her in my guest bathroom for the past 2 evenings. She slept quietly there until morning and after eating, she was happy to go outside for the day. Today she played in my yard while I was gardening. She is snuggled in my lap as I write this. Please contact me to claim your precious gatito. Kat McKay 6604-7201

  10. To all my amazing supporters in Boquete. It is a shame, but unfortunately, despite every good intention, and efforts towards it, I will not be returning to head the Green Room for the Festival again this year. I have been given the most delicious blessing in my beautiful new Granddaughter Alyssa, who at present is in my charge full time. To uproot her day to day routines, and head out for a month or so, simply has not been sitting well with me, and so I am handing the reigns to someone else now to carry on the work I began in 2012. I have no doubt the Green Room will continue to be the fantastic success is has been in the past, and I wish my successor(s) every good wish, and remain available to pass on any information and assistance they may require. I have been blessed with the time I spent in Boquete. What began as a 3 month volunteer stint, evolved into 6 years, and I will forever be appreciative for the opportunities and more importantly the friendships I have made. The Boquete community is one of a kind, and its amazing to have been a part of that. From the bottom of my heart I would like to thank each and every one of you who have supported me in building the Green Room to what it has become today. All the volunteers and foodies who became involved and worked so hard, without you all, it simply would not have happened. Whilst, taking care of the artists and visitors is a lot of fun , it is hard work, and long hours, and each and every one of you have done an amazing job, whether it be working alongside me in the Green Room, or supplying amazing dishes to the buffets. Thank you so much for your invaluable support. For those of you who are new to Boquete, I recommend you become involved, in whatever capacity. You will have an amazing time, and make new friends. I wish the festival 2018 every success. I am sad to not be seeing my friends this time round, but I have no doubt I will descend upon your shores sometime in the future, and I will look forward to it. Thank you for all the love and memories with hugs from Kiwi Vicki “Down Under’ - Vicki Whittle vickiwhittle@me.com (+64) (0)21 954 998 skype : vixeniwi1

  12. I have picked up the Medical Discount Plan cards for all the people who renewed or initially signed up in late December and early January. If yours is a renewal, you will receive a new payment record card to keep at home, but your original wallet card will still be valid. I'll be walking around at the Tuesday Market with a sign around my neck that says MED PLAN CARDS." I'll attend the meeting at 10:30 and make an announcement there about the cards. After the meeting I'l try to hang out near the stairway to the parking lot Please try to see me and pick up your cards. You need them, and I don't! Bob Gregory P.S. If yours is a new enrollment and not a renewal, it will be a good idea to make an initial appointment with a doctor of internal medicine to get acquainted, provide your medical history and establish a file. This way if you need urgent or emergency care later, there will already be some information on file.

  14. We've got one Fiddler, one Banjo player, and sometimes a Guitar and Bass player, feeling mighty lonely at the moment. If you play (or know anyone who does play) violin, banjo, mandolin, guitar we would love to kick it up a notch with some more acoustic instruments. I've got chord charts so if you know a few chords and can keep a beat there is no need to know the songs to play along. Give me a call or email if you want to give it a try.... Pat Thomas 6563-1344
