  1. U.S. Embassy Panama City Message to U.S. Citizens The American Citizens Services (ACS) Unit at the U.S. Embassy in Panama would like to inform U.S. citizens that we will be visiting Boquete, Chiriqui, on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 to provide notarial services and some passport services. You will also have an opportunity to meet and speak with our new Consul General, Adrienne Harchik, during a town hall event immediately preceding our passport and notarial services. Unfortunately, the logistics of meeting you outside of the embassy mean that we can only provide limited services. We are not able to provide adult passport renewal services (Form DS-82) at the event. In addition, we cannot provide any Federal Benefits services when we come to Boquete. 6. First and foremost if you are not currently on our weekly mailer please click this link ------>(Join By Clicking Here) <------ and subscribe. It's very simply and our weekly newsletter contains fun stories, great information about Panama, updates on our week, and most importantly a quick overview of our offerings. Right now we are on the cusp of a Boquete innovation that quite possibly might change your life. Unfortunately we are a small operation and can only produce small batch very limited quantities of our products so they tend to move quickly but when this new line becomes available those who are on our subscribed list will hear about it first. This Week we are very excited to bring to you a special treat!! We want to take you on a culinary journey to the "Land of Smiles" in South East Asia. Yep, we are traveling to Thailand (culinarily speaking). We are bringing you a Thai Chicken Penang Curry, Thai Beef Massaman Curry, Thai Roasted Pumpkin and Coconut Soup, and Thai Green Curry with Brazilian Spinach and Chickpeas. These dishes are all radically different in flavors and range from the mild to the spicy. Check out our menu to get more details about each item. We know that this week many of you will be celebrating Thanksgiving and with so many places offering delicious meals we decided to focus on the other days of the week. We will have a few sides and desserts that would go great to accompany your festive entrees so be sure to check out the menu and see what's available. If it's listed on our menu then it means that we still have it. THERE WILL BE NO MARKET THE WEEK OF THE 28th. With that said we are completely stocked up in the event that you might need a few extra entrees to hold you over till December. Our delivery schedule, pick up schedule, and market schedule will all remain the same for this week. We will have Pumpkin Spice Bread, Pumpkin Pies, Real Buttermilk, Mac and Cheese, Spinach and Artichoke Dip, Cajun Potato Salad, Buttermilk Cornbread and more this week as sides. Our Buttermilk Cornbread makes for a sensational ingredient if you are making cornbread dressing. Here's a really yummy idea for a cornbread dressing that will quite possible steal the spotlight. If you need any andouille sausage let me know.. Check it out here. http://emerils.com/128482/andouille-cornbread-dressing On a different note, have you tried our Cream of Mushroom soup? This soup is ridiculous. It's like eating the essence of Nature. Creamy, earthy, umami, rich, and amazing are just a few words that come to mind. Add this soup to your green bean casserole to really elevate it. It has 4 different varieties of fresh mushrooms (harvested the day we cooked the soup). Each package is roughly 1 quart. Finally, if you are still reading this and you are a Mexican hot sauce lover I am pleased to say that we have imported a wonderful Mexican Hot Sauce that should be quite familiar to you. It is called Valentina and comes directly from the state of Jalisco, Mexico. Panama hot sauces are in abundance but none compare to the sauces that are made South of the US border. As a test to the market I wanted to only get a few to see what the response would be like but if there is a bigger interest I will surely do what I can to bring in more and other varieties. This particular one happens to be my favorite. I will be selling them in pint size (16oz) packages for $5 each. Be sure to check out the extras section of our menu to order. I only have a limited amount available. Thank you for reading and I hope that you have a great weekend. Click this link to check out our menu for the week. http://doshombrespanama.com/our-menu/ See you soon, Eric, Cecelia, Chandler, Keira, Aidan

  14. View this email in your browser Amigos de Animales November Newsletter October Clinic Report On Sunday October 29, Amigos de Animales spayed or neutered 257 animals, 111 dogs and 146 cats. It was a long day, but we had 7 wonderful vets and many great volunteers working and we wrapped up around 5 pm. Back in our old location, we could not have done that many animals in one day - our record there was about 157 and we would have been working well into the night. On many nights we did not close up until after 8 pm. 257 is still not our record - in January of 2014 it was 258 at the school at Los Naranjos. That was a day! But this year was still one for the records, having sterilized 1918 animals in 2017 and bringing our total to 13,196 since 2005. It is hard to believe that we have reached the end of another clinic year, the close of the third in our new facility. We could not have done it without the generous donations by our old friends Jerry and Carole Loveless and Rob and Betty Eyehorn, who enabled us to make the bold move into property ownership and construction of the building that is the Ruby McKenzie Clinic. There are so many people to thank and recognize, starting of course with our volunteers, without whom none of this would be possible. We thank you, we love you, and we hope to see you all again next year. Thank you for showing up, setting up, staying late, bringing food, and being there to help us with our mission. Thank you also to the vets, the best ever, starting with Dra. Chely, profiled her. Wwe could not do it without her. Dr. Tello told us last year he was retiring, but he still managed to work at many of our clinics this year. We were happy to see Dr. Cesar back with us - he had missed several clinics due to illness. And to all the vets who work tirelessly every month to ensure the health and livability of our community: Dr. Virgilio, Dr. Manuel, Dr. Ricardo, Dra. Amanda, Dr. Aaron – thank you for your hard work and dedication. We are so pleased to welcome Dr. Linda Faris to Amigos de Animales. She has been a calm and steady presence in the Recovery area all year, and we are so grateful to her. She has taught us so much about animal care and how to safely help the animals entrusted to us. Many thanks to Heidi and Mike at Mike’s Global Grill. Every month they have donated pizzas for the vets and it is so appreciated. Thanks as well to Rodrigo Marciaq who brings us fresh lettuce from his greenhouses for a healthy addition to our lunches. Thanks to Magaly Bustamante, our appointment secretary, who set up our reservations and deals calmly with all the chaos on Sunday mornings. Thank you to our collectors, who have made such a difference in the lives of animals of our community and the surrounding areas. Thank you all for a very good year! Chely By Ruby McKenzie, Founder We want to recognize and applaud the efforts of our local veterinarian, Dra. Tomasa Itzel Castillo M., or Dra. Chely as we all call her. She received her veterinary degree “Medico Veterinario" in Brazil from the Universidad Federal de Santa Maria in the late 1990’s and her post graduate degree in 2001. Panama had not fully developed a program for vets, so those interested had to go to other countries for their degrees. Her post graduate (Master’s) degree is in “epidemiologic” which is the advanced study of diseases, such as rabies in cows or a fungal outbreak in a defined population, affecting large groups of animals. After all, she lived in Chiriqui where there were a lot of cows! She opened her “office” for business in 2001. Actually it was just inside her living room in a sectioned off area with an exam table. Finally in 2004, she was able to build the office beside her house which we now visit. Dra. Chely began working with Amigos de los Animales before we were officially formed. She was at the first sterilization clinic in 2005, when 21 animals were sterilized, and since then has only missed one clinic through 2017. She is basically a very shy and humble person. She does not like to operate at the clinics (no public display for her!) but she surely knows how to mix our anesthesia cocktail and to inject animals with it at our clinics. She has been a mainstay for all of us. She did not start out as a “small” animal vet, but she certainly became one! She responded to our needs beyond all expectations! Through all of this, she is a single mother of one. Jonny, her son, was just chosen to do his post graduate work in Spain on a full-ride scholarship - only one of two in all of Chiriqui Province to be selected (and only 15 in all of Panama). Dra. Chely, is a compassionate, talented vet, a very good and tireless friend of Animales and a very proud, supportive Mom. Thank you, Dra. Chely Castillo for all that you do for all of us! Don’t delay, make your reservations for the January clinic! As you can see from our monthly financial report, we care for many animals each month, but the cost of medications, anesthesia, supplies, etc. far outweigh the income we generate from payment for our services. We never turn away an animal, regardless of the owner's ability to pay. We also have several great Collectors who gather animals from Boquete, Dolega, David and beyond and bring them to our clinic for neutering or spaying. Please help us continue to care for the health and well-being of Chiriqui's animals by making a donation of any size! DONATE NOW F O L L O W on F A C E B O O K

  19. Welcome to the newsletter of Boquete Health and Hospice Is this email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser. A Message from the Blood Donation Program Coordinator Charlotte Lintz There is no blood bank for any of the hospitals in Chiriqui. Thus, for everyone, obtaining blood in any emergency situation is difficult. For almost all situations, the ONLY way to receive blood at any hospital is to ask donors to come and donate for you at the hospital. You cannot purchase blood from the hospitals, but you can pay someone to donate for you at the hospital. This is not always the safest way, since some people can feel compelled by money to withhold information about their medical histories. In emergency situations, the staff at the hospital or the firemen will donate blood, but there is often an expense involved. For these reasons, Boquete Health and Hospice Foundation maintains a blood donor list for all residents of the Boquete area and provides guidelines for prospective donors. This list is not published or shared in any way. You can volunteer to donate blood by putting your name on the list of people to be called if someone needs blood of your type at Chiriqui Hospital, Mae Lewis Hospital or the Regional Hospital. Your blood type is on your Panamanian driver’s license. It may be on your U.S. or other license. You can get your blood typed by paying a small fee at any lab. The cost is usually around $5-$10. The confidential list is maintained by two volunteers. We will find donors for you whether you have volunteered to give blood or not. Giving Blood is not a requirement for receiving blood. Our Spanish is not good so there must be an English speaking contact person. When you volunteer to donate, some hospitals can take several hours to run the tests. They will take your phone number & call you back to donate. We are looking for donors, no matter what your age! For more information and the criteria for donating blood, go to our website: http://www.boquetehealth.org Once you are on the website go to More and then click on Criteria for Donating Blood How We Help In late July, an elderly Panamanian woman named Magarita fell and broke her hip. She had hip replacement surgery a few days later. A family friend who is a member of Boquete Health and Hospice helped the family contact BHHF to find out what services would be available to the family. Betty Landis and her bilingual neighbor Yari made a home visit. They assessed the medical equipment needs and determined that Magarita didn’t need a hospital bed but would benefit from having attachable sides fit to the bed to prevent her from falling out of the bed. A walker was also provided to use once she gained her mobility. Several days later another member from BHHF visited the family. Magarita’s son and daughter both report that this visit was very helpful to all of the family members. Magarita had been sent home from the hospital after her surgery with no instructions to the family how to care for her. The family is grateful for the training they were given to learn how to move their mother, the best method to have her get up and start moving again and how to care for her while she is bedridden. They expressed warm feelings of appreciation for the services and compassionate treatment they received from the BHHF volunteers BHHF Health Fair Just a few weeks ago, Boquete was buzzing with care and concern for its residents. The Boquete Health Fair on October 22, 2017 was an energetic event promoting health and wellness to all locally. Panamanians were lining up an hour early to get their blood glucose tested. There was rarely an empty seat at any of our eleven vendors’ tables. Many were lucky enough to win certificates for free lab work, doctor visits, dental exams or cleaning, 24-hour blood pressure monitoring, and more. Dra. Sue King and Dra. Digna Diaz, Dentist Dra. Luz Barria, Chiriqui Hospital, MINSA, the Policlinica, Revilla pharmacy and Laboratoria Analytek answered questions and educated, provided medical testing, and promoted health and wellness to residents of Boquete. The folks at RodnyDirect and AAC were constantly busy answering medical and security questions. Keep It Simple Panama helped so many trying to navigate the Panamanian medical system. And, our dear friends at Foundation Pro-Integration showed how they help and how you too can help those less fortunate. Yes, we promote health and wellness but Boquete Health and Hospice Foundation was also proud to show how we serve the sick and dying in Boquete. Our hearts, hands, and help are here for you. The first BHHF Health fair was a success! Thank you to all who helped put on this event; and, thank you to those who came to promote health and wellness in Boquete.
