  4. Just TWO DAYS AWAY! The next Boquete Health & Hospice blood drive is set for this Saturday, October 21st from 7 am to noon at Amigos de Animales Event Center in Alto Boquete. While preregistration is not required and we welcome walk-ins, preregistering will give you a specific time slot and minimize your wait. We are trying to beat the record we set last June for the most pints ever collected in a blood drive in Panama! Please scroll through our Facebook page to read testimonials from both donors and people who have benefited from blood donations. In most cases the need for blood is an emergency--it's not something you can predict or plan for. You or a loved one could be the next person in need. Why not pay it forward if you can? And if you are not able to donate due to age, health, recent international travel or other reasons, please consider making a financial contribution to our matching fund. We are now able to accept credit card donations! These blood drives cost money to stage and we are grateful for your help. Sign up to give blood or make a matching donation today! Muchas gracias. 12. Boquete Calendar Boquete is a thriving community, and there are many sources of information. Facebook seems to be the most popular, but it has serious limitations...posts disappear in the constant flow of new offerings. There is one place where events are always available...Boquete Calendar...and it's growing. We're now including more Community Events, and more will be added in the future. We're heading into the party season in Panama, November will be packed, and we're working to get information on all of the parades, official closures, etc. Keep checking back, we'll add them as the information becomes available. Which is not an easy task, but we'll persevere, and do our best to have as much info as possible. Holiday Events are coded Green, and we will add all of the Parties, Dinners and FUN that Boquete is known for. Pro Tip #1...Below the month view is a Legend that identifies all of the Event Categories by Color. Pro Tip #2...If you click on one of the Categories in the Legend, you will see a list of events ONLY in that category. Pro Tip #3...Maps...if you click on an event, there is a red dot next to the Venue Name...this will lead to a Map button...not ideal, and tech support is going to allow for a Map button instead of a red dot...hopefully soon! To add an event, please contact kevin@boquete.app To view Boquete Calendar, click here: https://calendar.boquete.app/ Other sources of info about events: https://chiriqui.life/events/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/306210930135812 Thank you, Mark Heyer, for the lovely photo of the Flamingo Dancer. And, thank you, Jeff Dufresne, for being an unwavering friend, and supporter of this insane journey I can't seem to escape.

  16. Please help the children of rural Boquete experience the joy of reading and the magic of books! Hello, We'd like to give you an update on the Amigos de Animales Educational Outreach program. We've had the following amazing results: • Over 30 volunteers are going to schools one to two times per month • Raised over $3,000 • Completed 48 book corners, including all classrooms in seven schools. Each of these include a bookcase, rugs and 30 books • Held small spay/neuter clinics at reduced costs at Volcancito, Alto Quiel and Potrerillos • Partnered with Rotary Boquete which is making 25 more bookcases Who we are: We are a team of volunteers dedicated to improving the circumstances of the children and pets around rural Boquete. Many of us have educational backgrounds, some have technical knowledge, others have catering skills, some provide transport. Our mission: To enhance the students’ educational experience by providing classes on pet care, animal maintenance, and sterilization. We will also expand their access to attractive reading books, by modeling reading and teaching methods for the teachers, and by setting up school animal sterilization clinics at the schools, near the students’ homes. We are inspiring their reading by providing colorful story books from Scholastic, Barnes and Noble, local authors, and other sources. We also motivate the students to learn by singing songs, reading aloud to them, encouraging them to read in their spare time at home and school. The School Directors, Teachers and students in all of the rural Boquete schools are very excited about this program. There are many more schools and classrooms that need to be set up and animal care programs to be presented. Here are some quotes from administrators and volunteers: • "This has been a source of inspiration and motivation for our students. It has sparked interest in reading more, in wanting to take a book home, and in sharing what they read." Yadine Cedeno, Escuela de Alto Quiel, Director in Charge • "If we are reading with one, soon all of the others gather around to participate. They have opened up so much in the last year... The small things we take for granted are so important to these children. The love we leave with every time is overwhelming." Laurel Fang, volunteer • "Having the opportunity to go into the schools has been one of the most rewarding experiences of our lives. We were a little nervous at first, but that went away as soon as we were greeted with smiles and a hugs from the children." Michael & Debra Whited, volunteers • "The reading corners are such an incredible idea and it saddens me that not all of the schools have this yet. This Program is life changing for these kids... and sometimes I may be getting more out of it than the kids do!" Sheila Gunston, volunteer • "The social education system is teaching them how to take care of an animal properly and the program is doing it by teaching, reading, singing, dancing and just having fun. What is more worth than a smile of a kid?" Gabriel & Petra Henriquez, volunteers • "It has been a great success and personally, an amazing experience to see these children, many of whom lack basic resources, light up and get so excited about the information we provide." Cynthia Vitagliano, volunteer • "I was amazed at the children's enthusiasm and appreciation. The interaction with the children in the reading corner was pure joy!" Deborah Hanna, volunteer • At El Frances Arriba, teacher Eric, in the 4th,5th and 6th grade classroom, took one of the books we had donated entitled 'Valores' (which means values - see below). He has taught a complete project around the book and they have made the placards to display around the entrance of the school. He was really excited to show us how he had been inspired by our books." Katrina Kneebone, volunteer Come join us to help make a difference in these students' lives This program is having such an impact in our area, and we need your help. We have 2 main needs: Volunteers: we'd like to have 2 to 4 volunteers for each school so we can nurture and grow the experience for the children throughout the school year. We also will be helping with Christmas crafts and parties. There are many ways you can help, and Spanish skills are not needed. Financial: we are fundraising to be able to buy books and supplies for the Animales presentations, create bookcases and reading corners for 40 more classrooms, increase the number of books to 50 in each classroom, and to help fund the discounted Amigos de Animales school sterilization clinics. Our goal is to raise $10,000. There is no better exercise for your heart and soul than reaching out and helping to lift a child. Please click one or both buttons: Click here to volunteer Click here to donate It is so rewarding and fun to be with these students!! Please contact Katrina Kneebone at katrinakneebone@gmail.com or Cindy Clayton at cindy_wclayton@yahoo.com for more information.   $10 per month will help buy 2 books Amigos De Animales, Inc. 2733 Oak Ridge Ct Ste 104 Fort Myers, FL 33901 Email not displaying correctly? 18. In This Issue: Thank You For Your Response How Else Can You Help? Family of the Month Thank You For Your Response In last month’s newsletter, we reported that, for the first time in our history, we had to turn away families needing our help and create a waiting list of people we are unable to serve, except with an initial emergency food delivery. This was due to increasing food prices and increasing need over the past two years causing our monthly expenses to rise from $3,600 to $4,600. Thank you so much for your response! Several people stepped up to help, either by sponsoring a family for a year via a quick and easy monthly gift through PayPal, or through a generous one-time donation. We are pleased to announce that five families from our waiting list will now be receiving a vital monthly delivery of food staples to bridge the gap between what they can earn and what they need to feed their families. Please help us feed more families in need. A gift of $40 per month will sponsor a family of four for a year. There are still another six families on our waiting list. Your donation could make a big difference in their lives. It is easy to do through PayPal, even if you don’t have (or don’t want) an account with PayPal. Just visit our website at www.buenosvecinosdeboquete.com and click on “HELP NOW” to reach our donation page, then click on the “Donate” button. This will take you to our PayPal account, where you can choose the amount you wish to give and check the box to make your donation a recurring gift. The amount you choose will be deducted automatically each month from your designated credit or debit card. How Else Can You Help? We continue to ask for donations of KLIM, an enriched powdered milk product that is essential to our families without electricity or refrigeration to provide important nutrients for their children and elderly family members. We need the 360g size of KLIM which comes in a bright yellow can. A can costs less than $5.00 and can be found at Super Baru, Romeros, and other grocery stores. Please consider adding a can or two to your grocery list and drop them off at our Tuesday Market table. We also continue to have a huge need for large water and bleach bottles with handles for our successful Food Start Program. The empty bottles get filled with soil and vegetable plant seedlings (peppers, cucumbers, lettuce, cherry tomatoes, etc.) which we deliver to our clients for planting in their home gardens. We’ve had a good response with people bringing bottles to our BCP Market table in the Arco Iris building across from TapOut, and we’ve started receiving bottles back from our clients after they transplant the plants, so our monthly supply is improving, but please continue to help outwith your empty bottles. Family of the Month In our newsletter and through other media, including word of mouth, we have expressed that there is a growing wait list of families who are in dire need of our assistance. Our pleas for help caught the eye of a benefactor. Thanks to the kindness of this generous sponsor, one of the families on our waiting list is able to receive food assistance from Buenos Vecinos de Boquete. Delima lives in the mountains above Boquete with her four children and her mother.Their home is a hodge-podge construction of pieces of tin propped up with chunks of wood that also are used to fill in the gaps between the tin. When it rains, the shelter is filled with water. She cooks the small amount of food that they have on a wood fire inside the house. Delima was abandoned by her husband and receives no financial support from him. She does the best she can to provide for her family but has been unable to find work. Her oldest child at 19 is no longer in school but cannot provide for the family. It is difficult for many young adults to find work in the rainy season, especially if one is considered an “unskilled laborer.” Two of Delima’s children attend school and her youngest is only two years old. Delima’s mother is not allowed to work, having reached the mandatory retirement age for women. The rainy season is especially challenging for this family, which makes it difficult to stay healthy. There is little work available and what there is does not pay well. There is the hardship of trying to stay dry in what amounts to a lean-to. Buenos Vecinos is grateful for the support of the community which enables us to provide non-perishable food to Delima and her family. Delima and her family are incredibly grateful to the donor as well. Having a bit of food security will go a long way to improving their lives. Buenos Vecinos exists to help people who are unable to meet their basic food needs. We have provided emergency food support on many occasions and have been successful in helping families through hard times. We will help them with food support until the working age adults in the family can find enough income to become self-sustaining. If you prefer to donate by cash or local check, please visit our table in the Arco Iris building at the Tuesday Market, or contact Trish at BuenosVecinos79@gmail.com Be sure to check out our website and Facebook page: Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/BuenosVecinosDeBoquete/ Website: http://www.buenosvecinosdeboquete.com/ Copyright (C) 2023 Buenos Vecinos de Boquete.
