  1. Demonstration Alert (November 1 Update) U.S. Embassy Panama City, Panama Heading into the long holiday weekend, protest organizers maintain their call for demonstrations and roadblocks. This includes locations popular with U.S. citizens on tourism or living in Panama. Due to unforeseen disruptions, the prevalence of unauthorized “tolls” on intercity roadways, and reports of food and fuel shortages in some provinces of Panama, U.S. Embassy personnel have been advised to reconsider intercity travel. U.S. Embassy employees living in affected areas of Panama City have been advised to avoid demonstrations, limit movements, and stay indoors as conditions warrant. The U.S. Embassy continues to restrict mission personnel from traveling to Colón due to protest activity. Previous travel restrictions to parts of the Darien and Mosquito Gulf still apply. The U.S. Embassy continues to receive reports of vandalism, looting, demands for “tolls” at roadblocks, as well as some criminal elements infiltrating peaceful protests to commit robberies. This includes accounts where individuals were taken from their cars and assaulted when unable to pay such “tolls”. U.S. citizens are reminded that Panamanian National Police have used tear gas and other riot control measures to disperse demonstrations, including when demonstrators have blocked roadways or clashed with the police. The U.S. Embassy will send out further updates when there is a change to the current situation. Actions to Take: · Avoid demonstrations. · Exercise caution when traveling. · Monitor local media for updates. · Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests. · Contact local authorities (dial 911) for any immediate health or safety concerns. · Register for STEP (link below) and refer to our website for the latest alerts and messages for U.S. citizens. 5. These expenses prove how much Kirsten Cares For Cats is dedicated to caring for the cats. These costs represent the cats that have received veterinary care and food for the months of August and September. How would you know what we do and what we spend unless documentation was provided? Kirsten Cares For Cats needs more monthly 🗓️ donors to continue the work we are doing. 🤲🏻 I would not be asking unless I truly needed the support. The proof is in the pudding and these expenses illustrate the dedication towards the cats. The end of the year will soon be upon us and if you make a yearly donation to a charity, please consider Kirsten Cares For Cats and 501 c 3 information will be supplied. 8. Demonstration Alert (October 30 Update) U.S. Embassy Panama City, Panama Event(s): Despite the President of Panama’s October 29 evening address announcing a “popular consultation” on December 17, protest organizers maintain their call for demonstrations and roadblocks, which are continuing to occur throughout Panama, including in locations popular with U.S. citizen tourists, as well as in areas with high concentrations of U.S. citizens living in Panama. The U.S. Embassy continues to receive information from U.S. citizens of the limited availability of gasoline and certain food items at various locations in Panama. The U.S. Embassy has also received reports of vandalism, looting, demands for “tolls” at roadblocks, and some criminal elements infiltrating peaceful protests to commit robberies. This includes accounts where individuals were taken from their cars and assaulted when unable to pay such “tolls”. Panamanian National Police have used tear gas and other riot control measures in increasing amounts in response to the current demonstrations, including when they have blocked roadways or resulted in aggression against the police. On October 28, the Migration Service of Panama published a message calling on foreigners in Panama to abstain from acts of vandalism, followed by a reminder that Panamanian law allows for the deportation of or barring of entry to foreigners that threaten public security in Panama. U.S. Embassy personnel living in affected areas of Panama City are advised to avoid demonstrations, limit movements, and stay indoors as conditions warrant. The U.S. Embassy continues to restrict mission personnel from traveling to Colón due to protest activity. Previous travel restrictions to parts of the Darien and Mosquito Gulf still apply. The U.S. Embassy will send out further updates when there is a change to the current situation. Contact Carol Cardinale-Santana at cardinalesantana@gmail.com.   EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH PROGRAM UPDATE Our Educational Outreach program continues to grow! We have raised over $3,000 and have over 30 volunteers going to rural schools one to two times per month. We are working to enhance the students’ educational experience by providing classes on pet care, animal maintenance, and sterilization. We will also expand their access to reading books, read aloud to the students and by setting up school animal sterilization clinics at the schools, near the students’ homes. We have 2 main needs: Volunteers: we'd like to have 1 to 4 volunteers for each school so we can nurture and grow the experience for the children throughout the school year. There are many ways you can help, and Spanish skills are not needed. Financial: we are actively fundraising to be able to buy books and supplies for the Animales presentations, and to create bookcases and reading corners in classrooms. Soon we will be starting a year-end campaign to raise funds to do 5 clinics in rural schools in 2024. There is no better exercise for your heart and soul than reaching out and helping to lift a child. Please click one or both buttons: Click here to volunteer Click here to donate Please contact Katrina at katrinakneebone@gmail.com or Cindy Clayton at cindy_wclayton@yahoo.com for more information.   GET TO KNOW OUR AMIGOS DE ANIMALES FAMILY This month we're featuring a department head who is one of our hardest working volunteers throughout each month: Name: Jane Pahler Your position/title with AdA: Animal Recovery Supervisor and Volunteer, Team member picking up and delivering huge amounts of pet food monthly, and almost anything else that is needed. How long have you been working with AdA? Nearly 4 years Can you tell us a little bit more about what you do with AdA? I primarily work and supervise in the recovery section for both dogs and cats. After an animal has been sterilized, the recovery volunteers are there to make sure there are no post operative problems and assist in waking up these dogs and cats. We then find and return the pet to its respective owner. I also volunteer with the cat and dog feeding program, where we buy and distribute approximately $1,800 of pet food each month to persons who have a large number of animals that they are caring for, but who do not have the means to adequately feed them. Why would you encourage others to volunteer here with AdA? Sterilization prevents unwanted litters and transmissible venereal tumors and helps to improve the animals’ quality of life. Click here for the rest of Jane's story and more pictures on our website.   KIBBLE & BITS: • Food Drive: We are continuing to feed needy dogs and cats in Boquete at a cost of over $1,800 per month. You can donate by clicking here • Membership Drive: Sign up for your annual Amigos de Animales membership and receive a great car magnet. Membership is still only $10. You can sign up at the BCP Tuesday Market or at a clinic. • Gift certificates: We have made gift certificates in the denomination of $10 and $20, the price of an individual sterilization for a cat or a dog. Give your neighbors, gardeners and maids certificates for their dogs and cats. Let’s help each other help each other! These certificates are an easy way to help. They are available at the Animales table at the BCP Tuesday Market, at Mike's Global Grill or at the clinics • Educational Outreach program: We are visiting local schools to educate students about proper care for their pets, and the importance of spaying and neutering animals. Please email Katrina at katrinakneebone@gmail.com if you can help. Click here to donate, or click here to volunteer. • Spay or neuter your animal: we get new requests daily and are doing clinics by appointment only. Contact Rosa, our appointment coordinator, at 6563-8686 to be added to our list. • Rescue/adoption?: The mission of Amigos de Animales is strictly spay and neuter, we are not a rescue, adoption or veterinary service. Please do not ask Rosa about any other service - there are many other rescue groups in and around Boquete. • We have been updating our website - check it out here • Animales is always looking for stories and pictures to share in this newsletter.
