The meal that was given to each of the officials : As the Ngobe delivered each meal of rice and canned tuna they explained "This is what we had to eat during COVID. This is our "SOLIDARITY GIFT " from the govt. They passed out each lunch and most officials left, AND left that lunch on the table. The Ngobe then took a photo of each lunch and named the dignitary who could not choke it down. All the dignitaries left.........and did not return for 3 hours !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The message was clear. This only fueled the conflict between the "haves and the haves-nots" . Each picky dignitary that left the food then LEFT>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>played right into their hand. (mind you the priest stood up and told them all to be considerate and eat the lunch that was given ......that apparently did not fly ) The priest ate it....
At this rate we most likely won't be seeing resolution very fast. Daily it gets worse.

Strike is said to continue til the end of July according to the word on the street. The gas price reduction did not meet demands and further adjustments are asked for : medicine not only expensive but not available, food prices etc.

OPINION: Knowing risks of side effects and possibility of getting infected in spite of vaccination should be as well considered. The ominously named Omicron is not causing the deaths that the Alpha and Delta did. Minsa needs to provide stats on breakthrough infection ( infection among vaccinated ) as well as observed ill effects seen here of the vaccination itself. Alison. R.N.

On Friday December 24th we had a hiking emergency and I want to let the community know the tremendous response and support available in Boquete.
We hiked the La India road in Jaramillo Arriba, a difficult hike over a very rough gravel road with many hills. It’s 6.8 miles (11 Km) total (in/out) and ends at a river. One of our hikers crossed the river and continued hiking – the rest of us turned around and waited for him. After 2 hours and no sign of him we retraced the hike several times – no sign of him. At that point it was over 3 hours after the hike, so I called the police.
Police responded within 20 minutes to our remote location and drove myself and the hiker’s spouse the entire trail, including crossing the river and 3 miles (5 Km) on the other side. When the vehicle could go no further due to the terrain one of the policemen hiked on foot another 3 miles (5 Km) in extremely difficult terrain – to no avail.
In the meantime several vehicles and officers from the DIJ (investigative division) responded as well as SINAPROC (search and rescue), Bomberos (fire department) and an ambulance with all the equipment necessary for a rescue. This was within 2 hours of calling the police.
Fortunately the hiker was found alive and well and it all turned out OK. However hikers are advised to observe the following
· Hike in a group, never alone or just a couple. If injured or suffer a debilitating problem (heart attack, broken bone, etc) only properly equipped and trained rescuers can help you.
· All communication with the police and rescuers will be in Spanish only.
· Carry the originals of your identification (passport or cedula), not copies or pictures.
· Many hikes, as occurred here, have no cell phone signal – you are absolutely incommunicado with the outside world.
Take-A-Hike is the only hiking group in Boquete with a leader able to communicate in Spanish and experienced in first aid, rescue and emergency situations. Contact rimerman1@gmail.com for further information.
Walkie Talkies might work well. Buy a set of them and each person should be asked to check in if not seen by the rest. We use them in the Brisas community for emergency communication among residents here. Not expensive and work well most of the time. Alison

Her newer books for the year include Enrico, the singing rooster, and a school bus adventure based on one of her real-life ventures. And, don't forget to browse my new book counting to ten, bilingual Spanish/Ngabe, CHALINA LA CERDITA CUENTA HASTA DIEZ EN NGABERE. This book has delightful illustrations to join the counting process. I also included some tidbit info regarding Ngabes in the book's back matter and some Ngabe photos. A book makes a great Christmas present for a little one to enjoy, and having a book in two languages stimulates their brains to learn a language at an early age.janeruthwriter.com 6735-8465
This is a great gift to give to Ngobe children for Christmas. My friend Jane did a fantastic job . She took on the language challenge of Nabere and Spanish and did one fantastic job of creating this children's book. Hat's off to Jane !

What was missing in this long defensive dialogue was: 1. A detailed and serious investigation (legal and not merely policy adjustments) needs be made with immediate suspension of employees under investigation. Apparently these abuses had gone on for some period of time ( years ) without serious consequences 2. Assurance that there will be termination and punishment ( prosecution) of perpetrators if found guilty. It appears that the respected Smithsonian wishes to correct wrongs by policies rather that formal legal process with the Dept of Justice of the United States . 3. Protection for those reporting abuses.

Why create in the minds of the population a "crisis" when there is not one? The country boasts 80% vaccination rate vs COVID but is also has an extremely high rate of natural immunity due to the manner in which the initial outbreak was handled treating early cases in homes. The Omicron has low lethality and severity as recorded worldwide so far. If this mutation takes over it strikes me as good thing...a literal downsizing of this entire Pandemic.
Now is the time for a concerted move toward the direction of normalcy as our mayor here demonstrated by holding the country's 200th birthday celebration with a parade. Thank you Mr Mayor ! We all enjoyed fresh air, sunshine and the joy of celebration . Every body respected the mask mandate. Under all those masks there were smiles I know ! Alison. a nurse

Clarification: I understand gangs are different than mere thieves, but Halloween can afford a thief an opportunity if you are not cautious.

Please use caution as you open your doors tonight for Halloween . Know who is there BEFORE you open that door !

My husband and I seek an instructor in computer skills for Ngobe children of a family we care for. Is there any location where children such as these can learn computer skills and computer safety? Virtual classes make learning with a computer mandatory now.

The question that is obvious is...who was guarding this facility? What form of security systems are installed to protect the property ? This rather large quantity of supplies did not walk out by themselves...it took time and vehicles. Nothing was seen???????????????

Our hearts break for your loss. What a sweet soul. We send our condolences. Alison and Bill Brundage

I am stunned and majorly disappointed that Newsboquete would distribute such an announcement. Yes, I do care about the children. This announcement is basically inviting all of the Newsboquete readers to participate in a public protest. When I got my residency I was warned not to get involved in Panamanian politics because it can lead to losing residency status and being deported.
Protest if you wish, but just know that you are placing at risk your status here in your guest country.
Fact.

Thanks for your experiences you shared. Not a bad idea apparently to go home and look up what you plan to purchase before you do, to see if it is a discontinued model. Sometimes I have found when I meet resistance with issues that are covered by ACODECO I just tell the merchant I will file with ACODECO, and begin to walk. Usually I get better cooperation and resolution before I leave the store. I appreciate your story ...thanks !

Warranties. I got a response from my counterpart, the VP of Buying in Non-Foods. Here is what she shared about warranties for appliances:
We give full refund within 30 days if the member has the receipt, packaging and the product. After 30 days we cover whatever is stated in the instructions or on the box. For example, if the instructions say 1 year parts and labor, we will honor that statement and fix it without charging the member within that time period. If the member brings it in after the stated warranty, we can fix it but we will have to charge the member for the parts and labor.

There must be an answer ...a way to save the theater somehow.

Andrea was a such a good friend and neighbor. She and Don have been a joy to us in our lives here. We miss her and our hearts are broken. Andrea would not want us to be sad but encourage us to love one another and make the most out of our lives. Here in Boquete ( and esp in our little Brisas community) we are such close family. It's been almost 14 years of friendship....a long time !. That closeness is so special . Now that she is gone, we value it all the much more. Goodbye sweet sister. Rest in Peace. we are coming your way soon.

When I filled out my form neither my husband nor I could find Boquete in the drop-down. Unfortunately we just picked what was close...and of course, wrong. I just went in and now come to find you can not edit. All I can say is....we never found Boquete when filled out the form. JazzMan found it by using Spanish mode rather than the English translation. Eh, I don't really think it matters if you have filled out the form or not. I believe it will be a bit of time before we can receive it here in Boquete; plenty of time to figure out what's really up.

Note: In very small print this is written at the bottom of the form:
"This form is intended to manage the registration of those people who are interested in being vaccinated against COVID-19. The registry of those interested seeks to facilitate the procedure and logistics in the distribution and application of said vaccines, take the necessary provisions according to the condition of the person, as well as managing the quantities to be distributed by sector and population density. Lack of registration does not imply exclusion in the vaccination process. The information handled by this registry also consists of validating the data of the interested party as a measure of When filling out the form, it will be taken as a sworn statement about the information provided, which must be truthful, and its sending will be understood as consent for the use of this for the aforementioned purposes and for automatic registration in the single portal www.panamadigital.gob.pa, which will allow you to access the vaccination monitoring process, and other state services in as required, and for the handling and personal use of the interested party for the procedures requested. I just heard the some Ngobe are charge $10 to get through the blockade. Others have huge caldrons of food that they are selling to those stuck...profit ! The Ngobe seem to have their feet on the necks of the govt. officials. United Nations asks the govt to treat the protestors kindly and with respect. (?? hold off) So gasoline price lowered. Some 30 or so products listed for price control ( which never works) and the conflict sees so sign of slowing down. Eye opener fer sure !!!!!!!!!!!!
