  1. From another front, I learned of these alleged abuses through my work with Casa Esperanza.  Those Panamanians who work closely with these children are well aware of this man's actions and the allegations made against him in Panama.  The Panamanian police have done nothing and the abuse continued because of their inaction!  As in most child abuse cases, fear is the controlling factor the abuser uses to keep the victim from talking.  Loss of employment by the families was a major player in this persons play book as I understand it.  While there are those that say this kind of abuse is a societal issue among the indigenous, no child should ever be subjected to this kind of torture and any person committing crimes against children should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law in my opinion.

  2. No matter who is elected, the problems are the same and solutions are limited.  I believe that the UN should be in charge of foreign policy and that the coallition approach to the matter of world peace is the only smart move.  Why should America be "the gilded war machine", incur the costs both monetary and and in human lives?  While the UN is not a perfect machine, global peace is every nations business, not just the US.  Trying to be the biggest world power does not fly anymore.  Politicians need to acknowledge this fact and work together to minimize the affects of military conflict.

  3. Well they have to, its the law.  This is one of the perks that draws expats and their money to Panama.  As stated above, Jubilados will not eat there and without the expats, they will not be in business very long.  I have not nor will I go to RetroGusto because they don't offer the Jubilado discount at all!  Even though Calibri isn't following the law either at least they are offering it on some of their menu items and I am sure these nice people will get it together.

    Why is everything posting twice?????????

  4. Hi Penny - love your accounting skills!  LOL  It is not quite that easy but you are correct I believe, the net effect is you pay taxes on $8.00.

I had lunch at Calibri and found their quinoa salad and tomato soup was to "die for".  The portions were large and worth every penny (no pun intended).  You do not have to spend a lot as they have specials every day and the ala carte items are numerous.  The atmosphere was great and Chef Chris came out to greet the diners.  A very nice touch!  He has 3 other chefs in the kitchen with him and all are involved with creating different and interesting menu items.

As they get the Jubilado thing under control, I am sure they will be offering it on all their food.  I'll bet they can do a Chicas lunch for $9 and it would be the best meal you will eat this year!

  5. I agree whole heartedly with the comments on this site and, like our blogger, I too had a horrible experience with a controlling person when volunteering.  Waaaaay too much drama and need for control.  This person fired volunteers (is that even possible?)  just because she didn't like them.  While I agree that there is nothing more gratifying than volunteering and that most of us do not need a "pat on the back", volunteers should always be approached with an element of gratitude, kindness, graciousness and tolerance because even the most inept of us is giving the greatest gift of all, our time.
