My cat almost died a couple of times from asthma and bronchitis when we lived in Seattle.  It was a great relief when that went away when we moved to Boquete.  I'm sorry Boquete didn't have the same effect on your cat.  Another option, daily doses, or every other day doses, of prednisone (or prednisilone) to keep the asthma at bay.  It isn't as hard on cats as it is on people.  Experiment with the lowest dose that is effective.  That is available here, and it's cheap.  That worked for my cat.

Thanks again Judy. We do keep pred on hand for when he's particularly bad. I've never known anyone else who had an asthmatic cat!

Why don't you try another asthma medication?  Many brands are not available here, and you have to substitute.  My cat was asthmatic, and I got Ventolin and Beclate here, which worked.  Fortunately, he only had a couple of attacks after we moved to Boquete.  The climate here (and lack of dust mites - no carpeting) must agree with him.  He hasn't had an attack in 12 years.

Thanks Judy! I do use Ventolin as a rescue inhaler but he needs the Flovent daily or he goes right back into having severe attacks. I have not tried Beclate however, so I'll research it. Thanks for recommending! He's come close to dying a few times over the years, poor buddy. I'd really miss the weirdo :(

Danka refused to fill my prescription for heart medication 2.5 years ago and I ended up using Avilla instead.  My medication is a common one, atenalol, and can be found at most pharmacies.  They were not even nice about refusing me.

Is Avilla a pharmacy? I've tried to get Flovent at Any, Revilla, and Danka. No go. I have to go to Rey in David to get them.

I should think that black water would attract mosquitoes, no?

It depends. Mosquitoes are attracted to water in order to lay their eggs. They breed in standing water, black grey, clear, whatever, but not water that is being disturbed, such as on streets where cars are driving through. They lay their eggs at the edge of standing water. Moving water will scour away the larvae, so not a great breeding ground. I'm not an entomologist but I have been involved in Dengue research with some anecdotal exposure to Zika and Chikungunya via my colleagues and have some knowledge of the mosquitoes that carry the diseases.

ZIKA and other health problems (malaria, hepatitis, etc.) could be caused by black water which is sewage and human waste from toilets.

Bet the medical staff in David is going to be busy taking care of patients.:(

No, zika, malaria and dengue are mosquito borne viruses. They cannot be transmitted via sewage. The only caviat, is there are a couple of instances where it seems that zika may have been transmitted through sexual contact and so I will not rule out other modes of transmission until further research is done.

  6. My cat, yes my cat, has severe feline asthma and requires a daily dose of Flovent, or Flixotide. I was able to get it at Any in the past, then they stopped carrying it. Revilla had it for the last year but they haven't had it the last three times I've checked. Romeros, no. Today I stopped at the pharmacy at the park and they don't have it either. Certainly there must be someone in Boquete who has asthma and uses Flovent. I've asked both Revilla and Any to order it for me. They say they will, I go back and they haven't. I can get the Albuterol with no problem, but he has to have the Flovent too. Am I missing a pharmacia in town that might carry it? My kitty will die without it so I go to David but man, I'd rather get it here.

  7. When I came across this puppy, he was curled in a ball, unable to even lift his head. The owner said he was sick and he could not pay a vet, so he put him out at the street. Not only is he sick but he was starving as well. I brought him to my house and offered him a little cat food, as that's all I had. While he could not stand up, he literally gobbled down the food I gave him. After less than a day of nutritious food and care at casa de Los animals, the video attached shows how he was finally able to get up on his wobbly legs. It's clear that this puppy, while sick, is able to eat but was not fed. If in fact he does have distemper, at least he was not left to die starving at the side of the road in the rain.

  8. Patty is an excellent pet and house sitter. We have used her many times. She takes wonderful care of our house and cat who has feline asthma and requires and inhaler treatment. Patty is dependable, honest and trustworthy. She is also fully bilingual. I highly recommend her. Message me if you'd like more information.

We have scheduled the Hospice presentation "Being Prepared" (for dying) in late August or early September.

Penny, do you know if the next one will be the full presentation? I've attended two but they have both been the abbreviated version. Excellent information at both, but would like to get the whole enchilada.

  10. I just stopped by Milan Italia the new cafe next to Movistar.   The owner is Mauricio and his son Jordon is barista. I got a delicious coffee ($2) and some macaron made by Mauricio's wife ( .60 each.) They also had tiramisu, croissant, focaccia, and lots more in addition to the menu items. I attached a copy of the menu. Today was their first day open. I will definitely return. I believe they are open 7 (or 7:30) to 5:30. I forgot to check the days they are closed, I was so excited!

I understand it is also common knowledge that you are supposed to tip your bagger and anyone who pushes your groceries outside and helps load them into your car.  I wonder if this allows the owner to reduce what he pays these young boys (?).  Also, it looks as though one has to back their car out of the lot across the street.

I do always tip the baggers and, depending on the store, they carry them out or use a different type of cart to take them to my car.

....because they want huge big carts so you can buy more stuff ??   I'll have to say that's strange...but then here's this, you won't be pushing off down the street with your cart if you can't get through the gauntlet.

Maybe put a couple of posts before the exit doors that are narrower than the carts? Or pay another guy (in addition to the entry door guy and the parking lot guy) to police the carts? Though I notice the small carts go through no problem. Interesting that we saw a Baru employee rescuing a cart back to the store from Central Park.

They have kids available to carry out your stuff if necessary.

Yeah, real helpful at the UNLOADING side. My favorite thing to do is try to get rid of my cart with 3 people with similar carts behind me, while I have my groceries on the belt and run off to put my cart away and then try to squeeze back in to line.  The alternative is to leave your cart there and let them pile up. The"kids" are not helpful in this situation.

News.Boquete and Boquete News are not the same thing and are run by two very different people. Boquete News is a facebook site and the newslady is quite sure it was the owner of that site who lambasted you. The newslady usually remembers those she lambastes.

I misspoke, and it wasn't the newslady herself who gave me a verbal thrashing for opining about news.boquete, but rather her fans. And to avoid rehashing that moment, let me say that I enjoy the majority of the content ?

I resent News Boquete posting this. It is not news. Can we now expect that News Boquete will receive and disseminate information from every huckster promoting Panama? If so, the realtors can't be far behind.

Oh dear Bonnie. I walked this road last year and was lambasted for daring to criticize some of the content of Boquete News.
