  2. Movie starts at 1pm, and food, drinks and popcorn will be available from Cafe La Villa. (If you like, you can bring cushions for the hard restaurant chairs, or folding/camp chairs for more comfort.) There is no admission charge, but we ask for voluntary donations at the end of the movie to support the program and help pay for the video system. ------------------ Several people said all of the movies in the poll we sent out sounded good, and there was no one clear favorite, so we'll show them all over the next six weeks, starting with: "Amelie" (2001 - French with English Subtitles) is a whimsical fairy tale that has more darkness under its skin than most usually want to admit. After all, Amelie engages in malicious practical jokes and stalking behavior in her attempt to help the other lonely souls of Paris - and herself - so isn't all sweetness and light and big impish eyes. Between Bruno Delbonnel's acid colored cinematography, Tautou's wondrous central performance and Jeunet's twisted magical realism, the end result is so utterly lovable that the whole world fell under Amelie's spell. From Roger Ebert's Review: Jean-Pierre Jeunet's "Amelie" is a delicious pastry of a movie, a lighthearted fantasy in which a winsome heroine overcomes a sad childhood and grows up to bring cheer to the needful and joy to herself. You see it, and later when you think about it, you smile. Audrey Tautou, a fresh-faced waif who looks like she knows a secret and can't keep it, plays the title role, as a little girl who grows up starving for affection. Her father, a doctor, gives her no hugs or kisses and touches her only during checkups--which makes her heart beat so fast he thinks she is sickly. Her mother dies as the result of a successful suicide leap off the towers of Notre Dame, a statement which reveals less of the plot than you think it does. Amelie grows up lonely and alone, a waitress in a corner bistro, until one day the death of Princess Diana changes everything. Yes, the shock of the news causes Amelie to drop a bottle cap, which jars loose a stone in the wall of her flat, which leads her to discover a rusty old box in which a long-ago boy hoarded his treasures. And in tracking down the man who was that boy, and returning his box, Amelie finds her life's work: She will make people happy. But not in any old way. So, she will amuse herself (and us) by devising the most extraordinary stratagems for bringing about their happiness. . Link to trailer

  5. U.S. Embassy Panama City, Panama Message for U.S. Citizens Final Opportunities to Return Voted Ballots 14 October 2016 Don’t wait, return your voted ballot right away! Remember U.S. embassies and consulates are not polling places; same-day in-person voting is not available outside the United States. The majority of states require voted ballots to reach local election officials by the close of polls on Tuesday, November 8. U.S. citizens who want to participate in the 2016 U.S. elections should already have returned their absentee ballots to their local election officials. Never received your ballot? If you registered to vote and requested an absentee ballot prior to your state’s registration deadline, but have not yet received your ballot, complete and return a Federal Write-in Absentee Ballot to ensure your vote reaches election officials by your state’s deadline. If your regular ballot arrives later, complete and return it as well. Your Federal Write-in Absentee Ballot will only be counted if your regular ballot does not reach local election officials by your state’s deadline. Your vote will not be counted twice. RETURNING YOUR BALLOT: The final date to return your paper ballot to your local election officials by election day for free via the U.S. Embassy Panama City is October 26, 2016 . If you wish to drop off your ballot, or have a friend or colleague drop it off for you place it in either a postage-paid envelope or envelope bearing domestic U.S. postage addressed to your local election officials. All voting materials can be dropped off to the American Citizens Services Section Missed the U.S. Embassy Panama City shipment deadline? Consider returning your ballot to the United States via an express courier service such as FedEx, UPS, or DHL or electronically if allowed by your state. Ballots sent to local election officials via express courier service do not receive standard postmarks, so voters using this method should confirm delivery on or before November 8 prior to payment and shipment. Check your state’s voting procedures at www.FVAP.gov for guidance. Returning your Federal Write-in Absentee Ballot by email or fax. If you have previously registered to vote and requested an absentee ballot but it has not yet arrived the following states allow voters to use email or fax to send signed, voted Federal Write-in Absentee Ballots to local election officials: Alaska (fax only), Arizona (contact election official first), Arkansas (fax only), Colorado, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida (fax only), Hawaii (fax only), Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana (fax only), Maine, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska (fax only paper copy must also be mailed), Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma (fax only), Oregon (paper copy must also be mailed), Rhode Island (fax only), South Carolina, Utah, Washington, and West Virginia. Review your state’s voting procedures at www.FVAP.gov carefully for guidance. Returning your ballot by international mail delivery. If using Panama’s postal system, be sure to affix sufficient international postage, and allow sufficient time for international mail delivery. Ballots sent via regular international mail from most countries at this late date are unlikely to reach local election officials by state ballot receipt deadlines. HELP SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT OVERSEAS VOTING. Please help spread the word to your friends, family, and colleagues that now is the time to start thinking about overseas voting. Consider posting to your Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or other social media account that you are an active voter and will be dropping off or mailing your Federal Post Card Application or completed ballot. Use #ProudOverseasVoter to help get the word out about voting. Need help? You can get in-person assistance from our Embassy Voting Assistance Officers directly in the Consular Section daily from 8am to 12pm. Voting Assistance does not require an appointment. Have Questions? Please contact Panama's Voting Assistance Officer at 317-5000, or at PanamaACS@state.gov. You can also contact the Federal Voting Assistance Program directly if you encounter issues with local election officials by emailing Vote@FVAP.gov or toll free by phone from many countries around the world. Confirm your registration and ballot delivery online. Learn more at the Federal Voting Assistance Program's (FVAP) website at www.FVAP.gov.

  8. The small Sunday afternoon gatherings at Cafe La Villa to share screenings of movies has been a nice diversion for some of us who live in or visit Boquete. Rather than American blockbuster pop-culture movies, we look for highly regarded independent, world, and art house films. This week, we decided to choose six films and let the community vote for three should be our next three screenings. Then again - we could schedule all of them - this is indeed a wonderful collection of excellent and varied films. Below is a list of the six with basic descriptions, and links to trailers. (Feel free to reply with additional films you would like us to consider for screening in the future.) Reply to: BoqueteFilmClub@gmail.com --------------------- Amelie (LINK) 2000 - France Amelie is a whimsical fairy tale that has more darkness under its skin than most usually want to admit. --------------------- Chicken People (LINK) 2016 - Documentary - Chicken People is a funny and uplifting look at the world of show chickens and the people who love them. Starting at the largest national poultry competition, likened to the Westminster Dog Show for chickens, Chicken People follows three top competitors over the course of a year as they grapple with life's challenges while vying to win the next year's crown. Both humorous and heartfelt, Chicken People is an unforgettable celebration of the human spirit. --------------------- Inception (LINK) 2010 Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a thief with the rare ability to enter people's dreams and steal their secrets from their subconscious. His skill has made him a hot commodity in the world of corporate espionage but has also cost him everything he loves. Cobb gets a chance at redemption when he is offered a seemingly impossible task: Plant an idea in someone's mind. If he succeeds, it will be the perfect crime, but a dangerous enemy anticipates Cobb's every move. --------------------- The Jazz Loft According to W. Eugene Smith (LINK) 2016 - Documentary - Between 1957 and 1965 in New York, dozens of jazz musicians jam night after night in a dilapidated Sixth Avenue loft, not realizing that much of what they play and say to each other is being captured on audio tape and in still pictures by the gentle and unstable genius, former LIFE Magazine photographer W. Eugene Smith, who lives in the loft space next door. Meanwhile, Thelonious Monk stops by for three weeks of rehearsals; drummer Ronnie Free gets hooked on hard drugs, having been turned on by a drummer who was his boyhood idol years before; loft-resident Hall Overton, Juilliard instructor and classical composer, becomes a jazz guru; the 50s give way to the 60s; Smith begins to record his own phone calls and visits from the local police; the world changes—and Smith gets evicted. --------------------- Mulholland Drive (LINK) 2001 A woman is left amnesiac after a car crash. She wanders the streets of Los Angeles in a daze before taking refuge in an apartment. There she is discovered by Betty, a wholesome Midwestern blonde who has come to the City of Angels seeking fame as an actress. Together, the two attempt to solve the mystery of Rita's true identity. The story is set in a dream-like Los Angeles, spoilt neither by traffic jams nor smog. Directed by David Lynch --------------------- Postmen in the Mountains (LINK) China - 2004 Set amidst the stunning mountain terrain of China's remote Hunan province, this poignant drama concerns an aging postman who is unable to maintain his grueling route. He decides to hand the job off to his son, but with this passing of the torch comes deep emotions. The film consists of the journey, the conversations, the scenery, the little human stories. No big drama. No emergencies. Just carrying the mail, which over the years has supplied the threads to bind together all of these lives. Your hosts, David van Harn, Curator Elizabeth (Lucy) Rios, Proprietress, Cafe La Villa Carol Delonis, BCP Foundation
  9. ARF is proud to present its first annual Holiday Bazaar for W.I.N.O.S. (Women In Need Of Shopping) Location: Mike’s Global Grill Date: Wednesday, November 30, 2016 12:00 – 4:00 We are currently seeking artsy-crafty and creative persons to display their wares for this fun-filled holiday gift fair to benefit ARF. Are you willing to contribute 25% of your profit to ARF, AND contribute one item to be raffled off? If so, keep reading! If you don’t make any sales that day, then quite obviously you will not have a profit on which to make a contribution. But let’s be positive, everyone will have sales! No vendor fees required. This is a great way to benefit a very worthy cause, make contacts, and have a fun time! You will need to bring your own setup (e.g. table, display, decorations.) We have limited space inside, but there’s plenty of room outside where you can set up. Additionally, we will have the Abuelo Rum tent at the front of the restaurant. It’s “first come, first served” for placement, so contact us as soon as possible. Contact us at any time from the receipt of this email to reserve your vendor area. If we have tickled your fancy, contact us at: debbyb@theopenfile.com arf.boquete@gmail.com
  10. The Husky with Blue Eyes seen at Mikes Global Grill on Oct 9, is still lost. He has a collar and now looks like he has lost weight and seems to be in need of food and water. If you see him please give him some food and water. Not sure if his owners are looking for him? We will go back tomorrow and see if he is still around. Please continue to spread the word, if we see him we will go to police station and see if anyone went by there looking for him, we can also post a sign in espanol at Romeros. Thankis, Nisco Tribe

  16. At about 0830 am on Monday, October 10, the property manager of a home in a neighborhood of Boquete near the Cable and Wireless office discovered that the home had been burglarized. The Alto al Crimen Hotline received a call moments after the discovery. Twenty-four hour operator Francisco Lugo was called into action, and he immediately contacted Boquete police. The police arrived on the scene minutes later and made a full report. Although a complete inventory is still underway, it was noted that two televisions were missing along with some other items. A louvered window had been broken, and a gate to the yard was used for entry. Police are investigating. It should be noted that jalousy windows are easily removed and used as access. AAC volunteers will visit the scene to determine other weak security areas at the property, make recommendations for improvement and provide security recommendations for the community, as applicable. Boquete residents and visitors who are not fluent in Spanish and may not even know how to call for help in police, fire or medical emergencies need to know about, use and contribute to the support of Alto al Crimen. Our 24 hour AAC Hotline exists to serve the community, but we need financial support of the community to keep it operating and provide other AAC services. Visit the Alto al Crimen website at altoalcrimen.info to read more and sign up. Or call 6745-2828 for information. Please leave donations at Mailboxes, Etc. in envelopes marked "Alto al Crimen."

  19. Keep Boquete Clean Project On Saturday the 8th of October, 2016 I organized the first “Keep Boquete Clean” trash pick-up day. We had 14 residents from the Emerald Drive neighborhood and 4 from Los Molinos community to help pick-up trash along the main Boquete highway. These volunteers spent about 2 hours each picking up plastic and glass bottles, beer cans, disposable diapers, Styrofoam and lots of other debris. This resulted in a total of 38 bags of trash. Most of the trash was carried away by Gary Lewis (Emerald Drive community) pulling his trailer and taking it to the dump – THANK YOU!! The other bags were left for regular pick-up. A great big thank you goes to David George, who is a Panamanian. Not only was he out on Saturday morning, but he continues to go out several times a week by himself to pick-up trash along the highway. He loves this country and hates to see the mess on the side of the roads. His continued help is a blessing to me and the community. Another big thank you goes to Judy Tovar for organizing (and taking pictures) the Emerald Drive neighbors to participate in this clean-up day. Thank you to all the adults and kids who helped, including: Yadira Anguizola, Sr. Beitia, Zaida Frising, Maria, Family: Pedro, Benjamin, Gabriela and Jose Gonzales, Family: Jeff, Millie and Gray Hamilton & brothers and sister: Cody, Tyler and Dakota Langer. If there is anyone else who participated in the community clean-up that I missed – I apologize. Please let me know who you are. Finally, I would like to say that I was encouraged by the turnout and while I was picking up trash on Saturday, I was visited by the assistant of the Mayor of Boquete. He stated he saw the News Boquete flyer and came to take pictures of those involved. I was encouraged to hear him say that he will have a meeting with the Mayor on Monday (October 10th) to discuss the trash issues. A few people making a small effort end in big results! Sincerely, Tina Hoenig
