A Message from Boquete Health and Hospice Administrator Bev Tyler As Administrator I am the contact person with the community for your immediate health needs. I carry the Boquete Health and Hospice phone and deal with any issues that come up. They include needs for equipment or help organizing care for people who are sick or dying. Often this involves a home visit to determine exactly what type of help is most needed. As a registered nurse (foreign) I oversee the care that our teams of volunteers give to make sure that the clients’ needs are being met. That includes both the person who is sick or dying and also their family and the people close to them. We have learned over the years what resources are available in the community and help link people with those resources. It is a big job but I love it. I meet interesting people who are so very grateful for what we do. I get to receive their gratitude when the reality is that we are a group of many volunteers all working hard to make sure that you and your loved ones have as good a quality of life as possible. How We Help IN A SPLIT SECOND, MY LIFE CHANGED Beginning a new life in Panama was filled with thoughts of tropical gardens to plant, glorious hikes and many new and exciting places to explore. In a split second, my fun-filled life changed last June when a ladder fell out from under me as I painted my kitchen. The doctors would diagnose me with a broken pelvis in both the front and back. To avoid surgery, I was required to lie on my back for 10 weeks, without putting any weight on my legs, and sitting for no more than 20 minutes at a time, only to eat. I have always been a very independent person, and felt so hopeless, having to suddenly depend on the help of others. Family in the States wanted to help, but could not leave their homes and jobs to take care of me, and I could not travel on an airplane to be near them. That is when a friend told me about Boquete Health and Hospice. I had not even thought of Hospice, because I was of the assumption it was for patients who were terminally ill. Boquete Health and Hospice is for many different levels of care. We came up with a plan based on my needs. The volunteers helped with housecleaning, laundry, animal care, meals, etc. They were like angels that came to my house and helped me through those miserable 10 weeks. Without their help, and the help of a couple dear friends, I don´t know how I would have endured that long period of time. I am currently in the states with damage to my spine from the same fall, and having spinal fusion surgery in two days. I will have a 12 week recuperation period much the same as before. I have often wished there was a group of volunteers I could contact as I did in Boquete. Had I been able to remain in Panama, I would have also become a Hospice Volunteer. I can think of no better way to make a difference in the Boquete community, and of helping people in need. By all means, if you are in need, please do not hesitate to call them for assistance. You will be relieved you did so. As part of the mission to support a healthy community BHHF provides community information programs. On June 13, members of BHHF presented a program on falls prevention at the Tuesday Market. Merl Will-Wallace, Betty Landis and Laurie Collier were the speakers for the presentation. The following is a summary of the presentation: To reduce the risk of falling at home: Remove clutter and walk carefully when there are potential hazards like throw rugs and pets. Use a sturdy stool with hand rails to get something you cannot reach. Do not use towel bars, sink edge, etc. for support because they could come away from the wall. Use a night light in the bedroom and bathroom. Immediately wipe up spills on the floor and use rubber backed bathmats to prevent slipping. Wear sensible shoes (no flip flops, heels, etc.) Stay active to maintain overall strength, endurance, and balance. Know your limitations. If there is a task you cannot easily complete, do not risk a fall by trying it. Information provided by AOTA. Family of the month - June 2017 Meet Elibia and Her Family Buenos Vecinos de Boquete provides non-perishable food on a monthly basis to over 100 families and individuals. Included in that count are 58 clients who additionally receive the services of the Handicapped Foundation (Fundacion Pro Integracion). Pictured here (in blue) is Elibia during a home visit by FPI volunteer Loesje. Elibia was born with autism, cerebral palsy and a seizure disorder. She is now 16, and lives with her mother, several siblings and an extended family. Her father is deceased. The food provided by Buenos Vecinos de Boquete (BVB) takes some of the financial pressure off Elibia's family, who are obviously burdened with the care of this young woman. This food is also nutritionally valuable to the family, particularly with many children to feed. Fundacion Pro Integracion (FPI) steps in with physical therapy, necessary medical transportation, and assistance with medicine. Together our two organizations address critical needs of some of the community's most needy members. We hope you will decide to support our efforts. Alto al Crimen will have a table at the Tuesday Maarket on June 20 for sign-ups for the Hospital Cooperative Discount Medical Plan. Hospital Cooperativo is the only cooperative medicine, non-profit hospital in Panama. It has served David and Chiriqui for over thirty years with good medical care at the lowest prices. Through membership in the discount plan, you can save 25% to 50% off the already low prices for hospital services, doctors' fees and prescription medications at the pharmacy You can find more detailed information about the plan and read an English translation of the simple contract in the Forum section of Boquete.ning.com. The words "Alto al Crimen" appear in the subject lines of the forum posts. They should all be on the first two or three pages of the Forum posts. Cost for the discount plan for one year are $150 for individuals or the first person in a household and $125 for other persons in the same household. For the mid-year enrollments between now and July 11, 2017, the fees will be $225 and $$188 respectively because they will include payments for membership until January 1, 2019. This will save both you and Alto al Crimen the hassle of re-enrollment in December 2017-January 2018 To enroll you will need to bring a clear, legible copy of the cedula, permanent residency card or passport (in that order of preference) for each individual to be enrolled. And you will need to complete a short, simple data form with name, address and contact information. Payment may be made in cash (Bring exact change if possible) or by check payable to FUNDACION ALTO AL CRIMEN. Checks on US banks will take about three weeks to clear and there will be a commensurate delay in issuance off wallet ID cards for the plan. If you are currently paying high medical insurance premiums and have a high deductible, you can stretch your deductible considerably through this plan. You could even decide to put the high premium into your own bank account every year as a savings account for high medical expenses and use the Hospital Cooperativo medical discount plan for routine and minor medical expenses. Tuesday, June 27 – Local attorney Martín Santamaria Castillo and staff (Licda. Evelyn De Leon, and licdo. Roderik Telman) will talk to us about immigration. The talk will include the various options for expats to obtain residency in Panama and the penalties for not doing so. There are several new developments in this area and the foreign community needs to understand what they are. The audience may also ask questions about other areas of the law. Tuesday, July 4 – Tom McCormack will tell us all about Panamanian legends, wives tales, myths, and superstitions. This is a very entertaining talk and will teach us all something about this place we call home. Tuesday, July 11 – Our local mad scientist, Mike Petersen presents “THE WONDERFUL, WILD, WACKY, WEIRD WORLD OF QUANTUM THEORY”. Richard Feynman, one of the world's emminent particle physicists, once said that if someone says they understand quantum theory, then they don't understand quantum theory. Well, Mike respectfully disagrees. If you've ever wondered what all the hoopla was about (the double slit experiment, Schroedinger's Cat, quantum entanglement, etc.), then this talk is for you. Mike will explain how the whole thing works, and do so without math. You'll leave this talk more informed about the strange realm of the quantums. Like science? This one's for you. Dr. Dean Hoover, a Boquete resident, received his Medical Doctor degree from the University of Miami and then served as a USN Medical Officer for eight years including three years of Psychiatric Residency training. In 1983, he left the Navy and engaged in the practice private of Psychiatry in Annapolis, MD, until retiring in 2012. He and his wife have lived in the Boquete area for over four years. Betsy Barbeau will now provide all veterans and widows of veterans who served during any recognized war with information about a V.A. benefit that is awarded for ailments, infirmities, and/or disabilities that are or are not service-connected! Melissa Vallarino, President, Academia Internacional Boquete (AIB), has provided a copy of her materials used during her May 30th presentation about education in Panama. There was almost a full house in the BCP Theater that day, and a lot of interest in her comments about education in Panama.
