  16. The BCP Hex Room big screen TV is back, and so is working well, so our Sunday Movies are back on track! The movie is shown at The Fenix Cafe - which is a restaurant, so please, don't bring outside food and drinks to the event. Rather, support our film series by patronizing the Cafe, and be sure to say hello to Joy Alexander, the owner of the Fenix Cafe, and Ana, her cook/waitress. As usual, food, drinks and popcorn will be available. Early birds get the comfy sofas, but if you like, you can bring cushions for the hard restaurant chairs, or folding/camp chairs for more comfort. There is no admission charge, but we ask for voluntary donations to support the program and help pay for the video system. Below is a list of our films for May. We will send out details about each film the week before the screening. May 14: "The Secret of Roan Inish" (1994 - Ireland) May 21: A Little Chaos (2014 - U.K.) May 28: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013 - USA) David Van Harn Boquete Film Club Curator ----------------------------------------------- The Secret of Roan Inish (1994 - Ireland) Rated PG-13 Link to trailer Description (From Wikipedia): The Secret of Roan Inish is a 1994 American/Irish independent film written and directed by John Sayles. It is based on the novel Secret of the Ron Mor Skerry, by Rosalie K. Fry. It is centered on the Irish and Orcadian folklore of selkies—seals that can shed their skins to become human. The story, set on the west coast of Ireland, is about Fiona, a young girl who is sent to live with her grandparents and her cousin Eamon near the island of Roan Inish, where the selkies are rumored to reside. It is a family legend that her younger brother was swept away in his infancy and raised by a selkie. Part of the film takes place in Donegal. It holds a 98% "Certified Fresh" and average rating of 7.8/10 on review site Rotten Tomatoes, based on 42 reviews. Critic Stephen Holden, film critic for The New York Times, liked the film's direction. He wrote, "The Secret of Roan Inish is the first film directed by Mr. Sayles that could be described as visually rhapsodic. Photographed by Haskell Wexler on Ireland's rugged northwestern seacoast, it is a cinematic tone poem in which man and nature, myth and reality flow together in a way that makes them ultimately indivisible.

There are exciting raffle prizes that have already been donated. Already listed as raffle prizes are two very special getaway venues, one in Boca Chica, Chiriqui and the other on the Caribbean island of Bonaire. Bocas del Mar is offering a two-night stay for two with breakfasts and dinner valued at $500. www.bocasdelmar.com/es Bonaire Dive Apartments is offering a six-night stay for two on the luxurious resort Perla Boneiano, valued at $975 www.bonairediveapartments.com Family of the Month May 2017 Regina knows how to take care of her six children. When her husband died, she knew that she would have to be very careful with her meager income and the food provisions from BVB to make this work. She also knew that it would take some self-sacrifice and creativity to realize her ultimate goal of getting each of these children educated. The owners of the Boquete farm where Regina and her children live have honored the memory of her husband by allowing her to live in this two-bedroom wooden house rent free until the last child has graduated. However, to protect the integrity of their crops, they don‘t allow her to raise produce on the property, only chickens, her primary source of protein for her family. Regina works three days a week for $8 a day to make $96 a month. But she pays $80 in transportation costs to get her children to school and $12 a month for utilities each month, leaving nothing for food or clothes. So she and her fifteen year old daughter, Estafani, with the donation of a sewing machine, some cotton fabric, and an ironing board and an iron, are starting up their own little cottage industry: they make traditional Ngobe dresses and sell them to friends and family in their community. This wise and dedicated woman is raising happy, healthy, well-adjusted kids who know she is showing them something truly valuable. Only four of the six children are pictured here because two elementary school students were still in class. Click HERE to donate now.
