Hantavirus in Panama

Message added by Moderator_02

This disease is commonly spelled two different ways: (a) hanta virus, and (b) hantavirus. According to Wikipedia, the official name is orthohantavirus. The CDC prefers hantavirus, and so we will follow its lead. For more detailed information, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orthohantavirus, among other resources.

The population of rodents that transmit the hantavirus, which has already claimed its first victim is on the rise in the Valle de Tonosí, Los Santos.

The report comes from the  Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies (ICGES) which warns of increasing risks of people contacting the often fatal disease, while health authorities have stepped up efforts to persuade local inhabitants to take steps to prevent the transmission of the virus.

oligoryzomys – the disease carrier

Blas Armién, an ICGES researcher, said that a study of the ecology of the rodent revealed that in December 2017 three species of the oligoryzomys genus were found,

while in January nine were captured. This means that there is an increase in the population, and more cases of hantavirus are expected to appear, according to Armién.

The researcher said that the community has to participate in the prevention and control of the disease and to go on time to receive medical attention. to avoid deaths like that of a 62-year-old patient on January 28.

Late Friday morning (April 23) Bud and I were at Chiriqui Hospital in David. A technician came to the waiting area to escort Bud to the x-ray room. Suddenly another staff member interrupted and announced there was an emergency involving a young boy possibly with hantavirus and asked Bud to return to the waiting area.

After 30 plus minutes, Bud was recalled for his x-ray.

No word about condition of the young boy.

Hantavirus continues its attack on Panama

Thu, 04/26/2018 - 11:41

Diseño sin título (13)_1.jpg

The Hantavirus disease is already at work in Panama, especially in the area of Tonosí, Los Santos. 15 cases were reported in the country during the first quarter of 2018.

The causes of this scourge are derived from the contagion with rodents and it is considered potentially fatal. Hantavirus is a contagious disease but it is not transmitted from human to human.

The Health Minister, Miguel Mayo, said before the reported figures that “It is important that the community knows that the first health safety ring is in each other, that is to say when they go to a place that has been unoccupied for a long time for camping purposes; it is important to clean the area, using a mask to prevent excreta from being inhaled.”

The health authorities of the country and, in particular, the Gorgas Memorial Institute, are continually carrying out tests against possible new cases and have preventive operations in case they are needed. According to Minister Mayo, there are specialized personnel in the field, especially in the area that has reported the greatest number of cases.

The main recommendations given by the head of the health Ministry were: do not come into contact with the animals that spread the disease, avoid breathing waste, not having spilled food without any protection and close all possible access routes to rodents.

In the last hours a new case of contagion was made known; it corresponds to a minor only 11 years old who remains in medical surveillance at the Joaquín Pablo Franco Hospital.

Miguel Mayo also reminded the population that the 911 emergency number is available in case of any emergency.

Hantavirus watch for carnival

hanta.jpg

HANTAVIRUS carrier

Posted 24/02/2019

With Carnival 2019  set to begin on Saturday, March 2 the health authorities in Los Santos, a major center of the annual celebration, have asked the population to take extreme hygiene measures to avoid contagion from the hantavirus, which last year left three dead in the province and in 2019 has already affected 13 people.

Leyla Sánchez, medical director of the Joaquín Pablo Franco Sayas hospital in Las Tablas, pointed out that every year when the Carnival arrives, the people of the municipality risk protecting themselves when they clean their homes, especially those that have remained closed throughout the year.

Sanchez said that the closed houses can have urine and excrement of mice related to the hantavirus, as well as bat residues. Therefore, the villagers should take all necessary measures to avoid affecting their health.

She noted that Sánchez since Las Tablas does not have enough lodging for all the people who arrive at the Carnival stay in some resort to using tents.

Cleanliness
People who are forced to use tents should maximize cleanliness in the places where they install them, to avoid health complications the official reiterated.

Sanchez said that everything indicates that for 2019 the number of cases is less but she stressed that when the dry season arrives, mice who carry the virus migrate to homes in search of food.

The hantavirus has very ambiguous symptoms that in the first instance are confused with a flu-like condition that includes muscle pain, fever, and headache.
